The U. S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 55 km north northwest of Kimchaek with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
Sept 3 (Reuters) – An earthquake measuring 5.2 struck North Korea on Sunday, suggesting the reclusive country may have conducted a sixth nuclear test.
The U. S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 55 km north northwest of Kimchaek. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

How Meerkats Do It

0

Meerkats are anything but meek — including when it comes to their mating behaviors.
Popularized by the character Timon in the animated Disney film „Lion King, “ meerkats are often viewed as meek animals constantly on the lookout for danger. But within their small groups, these creatures are anything but meek — including when it comes to their mating behaviors.
Meerkats (Suricata suricatta) live in complex, hierarchical social groups or „mobs“ consisting of two to 50 individuals. These groups are ruled by a dominant male and female, called the alpha pair, that have exclusive breeding rights. The group also contains subordinate females who are typically closely related to the dominant female; subordinate males who are usually the offspring of the alpha pair; and one or more unrelated immigrant males.
Meerkats reach sexual maturity at 1 year old, and males willingly leave their group permanently at around 2 years old to attempt to join or take over another group. Adult subordinate females, on the other hand, are often forcefully (and sometimes violently) evicted by the dominant female — they’ll sometimes remain on the group’s territory, sleeping and foraging alone or with other evicted females until the dominant female’s aggression towards them subsides. [Strange Love: 11 Animals with Truly Weird Courtship Rituals]
Some females don’t return to the group and instead form new groups, sometimes becoming the alpha female, said Tim Clutton-Brock, a zoologist at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. A female may alternatively become alpha by inheriting the position in her natal group upon the death of the previous alpha (by being the largest and most powerful subordinate) .
„And it’s very common that the breeding males in groups are the ones that have fought and evicted other males, “ Clutton-Brock told Live Science.
Dominant females don’t have much choice in their mate, given that the dominant male will do all he can to prevent her from mating with immigrant males in the group. And the dominant male will usually only mate with the dominant female, because the other sexually mature females in his group are his offspring.
Similar to humans, meerkats are able to breed year-round. But in their native home range in southern Africa, mating often coincides with periods of high rainfall, Clutton-Brock said, adding that „the rainfall is unpredictable but it’s lowest between April and July.“
Given that mating typically occurs underground, it’s unclear if meerkats engage in many courtship rituals. In some cases, the dominant male may fight with the dominant female and grip her by her nape until she subdues and allows him to mount her from behind.
Subordinate females may occasionally mate with the immigrant males from within the group or outside of the group. But this sneaky behavior comes at a price — dominant females routinely kill subordinate females‘ pups and evict the wrongdoers (sometimes while the subordinate female is pregnant, forcing her to abort) .
As payment for their misdeeds, subordinate females that lose their litters or return to the group after being evicted act as wet nurses for the dominant female’s pups.
The dominant female has up to four litters a year and will often remain in her position until her death. When that happens, the remaining females will fight for the ruling seat, with the biggest female often coming out ahead. The ultimate winner will experience spikes in testosterone and estrogen, as well as a rapid increase in weight and skeletal size, in the three months after taking over, Clutton-Brock said.
Interestingly, recent research shows that subordinate meerkat sisters in a group actively compete with each other through eating. In experiments, Clutton-Brock and his colleagues fed younger sisters lots of food to increase their size. Older sisters responded by eating more on their own to grow bigger, helping them keep their place in the queue for the crown and the right to breed.

Never forget the human factor of mergers

When it comes to mergers and acquisitions, business schools fail to prepare their students for the realities of how business leaders operate in the real world. Frequently, the decisions and outcomes of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) depend heavily on emotions, relationships, and timing. The most prosperous and successful opportunities often occur when a company invests time and thought into building strong, genuine relationships.
M&A’s have always been big business and it appears that trend is only growing. 2016 racked up $678.5 billion in M&A deals, the highest number in any single year of the past decade. The appeal of an M&A varies, it might be to fill a gap in the company’s resources or capabilities, or to help the company enter a new market.
While the financials of a potential deal might look beneficial to both parties on paper, numbers do not guarantee the success of a deal. Here are some tips to help you successfully navigate the unforeseen human factor that all too-often comes into play when trying to make and close a deal.
M&A’s don’ t happen overnight. Taking the time needed to get to know a fellow business leader and their company is essential to any potential decision to engage — patience does pay off. Something as complex and affecting as a merger or acquisition should not be done in haste, as the magnitude of these decisions can leave lasting impacts on the future success (or failure) of the purchasing company.
For example, when my previous company was acquired I spoke with the other company’s CEO several times before deciding to move forward with a merger. During this time we were able to assess each other and get to a place of mutual respect and even more important, trust. This is a difficult process. It takes a lot of time and energy from both teams.
Beyond conversations between myself and the acquiring CEO, it was important to me to have my team involved in the process to some degree. During the assessment period, a large portion of my team was invited to spend several days at the acquiring company’s HQ. Here we were able to spend time with people from different departments, brainstorm ways to integrate the teams and gain a full understanding of what we were getting ourselves into.
More important than that, we were able to gain insight into the company culture and ensure that it would be a good fit not only for us but for the rest of our team as well. Taking the time to assess these things early in the process can help avoid a lot of headache down the road.
While I had the luxury of time before needing to make a final decision, that isn’ t always the case. While avoiding a rushed M&A is key, it is equally important to consider timing. The peak of your success, or perhaps right before, is the best time to begin pursuing M&A conversations. If you’ re looking at your numbers and can foresee this peak in the next year to six months, that’s when you should begin the process of hosting conversations.
If you have a profitable and growth-centric future, there’s a much more substantial and competitive appeal to your company than if your best days are behind you. Once you plateau or begin to taper off, it may be too late to garner the interest and valuation you want.
As the selling company, determine your non-negotiable stipulations. Is keeping every single employee on the payroll important? What about culture, perks, and benefits? Do you have requirements on how or when your technology or services are folded into the buying entity? Just as you prepare for new business pitches or presentations to your board, you should prepare for a merger or acquisition by setting expectations on both sides of the table.
Sometimes this can cause ‘negotiation headache’ which is why it’s important to build that trusting relationship with the acquiring company. For me, I knew going in that any hurdles we ran into would likely be overcome by simply jumping on the phone to have a conversation because we had taken the time to build a rapport with one another.
From the buying side, make it a priority to hear these requests and must-haves, and do so with respect. Empathizing with the opposing members in a business deal is a valuable, and often understated, practice. Set the expectation with the to-be-acquired company that you hear them, and plan to work with them to ensure as many of their desired end results are achieved as possible. These are the people and processes that compelled your interest in the company in first place, the last thing you want to do is sign the paper and dissolve their essence.
The CEO of the potentially acquired company is more than just an executive, the CEO is a person, a daughter, a son, a best friend, and perhaps a father or a mother. CEO’s and founders have spouses, friends and families who often possess considerable influence in the company.
While these significant others might not be decision makers, they are decision influencers — business leaders trust their opinions. In many cases, the buyer underestimates these relationships. Invite significant others to dinner with key executives in an effort to acknowledge that while they are not at the conference room table, they are part of the conversation.
Most companies are not on the constant hunt for the next organization to acquire, rather, many M&A opportunities are born out of existing network connections. There are a lot of business facets that hinge on your ability to create and maintain relationships and there is always more to a major decision-making process than what is on paper.
People are creatures of habit. Completely uprooting an employee’s processes, location, and reporting managers can have a catastrophic effect on an employee’s ability to operate. M&A managers need to express flexibility in their approach to onboarding new teams. For example, when my team was onboarded to the acquiring company, we decided to maintain the incoming team’s current reporting structure — until they become comfortable with their surroundings and could adjust to changes easily.
We wanted the new team to feel welcome and to know their expertise was trusted. By doing this we were able to merge our teams much faster and build a trusted relationship right away.
Not all M&A’s will work out, but if you consider these tips when taking each careful step, you’ ll have a much better chance of a cohesive, positive and productive outcome.

No. 1 Alabama smothers No. 3 Florida State

0

This one was all about that dynamic Bama defense.
The top-ranked Crimson Tide hopes to return in January for an even bigger party.
Dominating on defense and taking advantage of an awful special teams showing by No. 3 Florida State, the Crimson Tide got started on what has become its annual quest for the national title with a 24-7 beatdown of the Seminoles on Saturday night at $1.5 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
“It’s good to get a win, but we have a lot of work to do, ” Alabama coach Nick Saban said, before adding ominously for the rest of the nation:
“We’ ll get better.”
The new stadium, filled to the rafters with 76,330 fans split almost evenly between the schools, hosted one of the most anticipated opening games in college football history .
At the end of the season, it will be the site of the national championship game.
Don’ t bet against Alabama making a return appearance.
“It’s one game. We have a long season, ” Saban said. “The focus that we have right now is what’s ahead, not what’s behind.”
Damien Harris ran for a touchdown and blocked a punt, while Jalen Hurts chipped in with a scoring pass in a game that basically required the sophomore quarterback to make no major mistakes.
This one was all about that dynamic Bama D.
And Florida State’s not-so-special teams.
“We work 30 to 35 minutes a day on special teams, ” coach Jimbo Fisher moaned. “We had breakdowns. Those were critical plays in the game.”
Coming off a last-second loss in last season’s title game, Alabama picked off two passes by Deondre Francois in the second half, snuffing out any hopes of a Florida State comeback. Throw in a blocked punt, a blocked field goal and a fumble recovery on a kickoff return, and there was really no path to victory for the Seminoles in the first opener between two teams in the top three of The Associated Press preseason rankings.
The Tide led 10-7 at halftime, catching a huge break in the closing seconds when the officials didn’ t call a pass interference penalty.
Tony Brown never looked for the ball, running into Nyqwan Murray as he tried to go for a scoring catch that would have given the Seminoles a lead. When Florida State was forced to settle for a 37-yard field goal attempt, Minkah Fitzpatrick leaped up to make the block on the final play of the half, preserving the lead and prompting a round of boos from the FSU faithful as the officials trotted off the field.
Appearing deflated, the Seminoles never got anything going over the final two quarters. Levi Wallace and Mack Wilson both had interceptions, and Francois’ night ended with him being helped off the field — putting no weight on his left knee — after being sacked from behind by blitzing safety Ronnie Harrison.
Francois grabbed at his knee even as he was going down.
It was a potentially crushing blow on a night that already went bad enough for the Seminoles.
“I hugged him, ” Fisher said. “We’ ll get the diagnosis and figure out what we’ ve got to do from here.”
With the Tide still clinging to that three-point lead, the game was essentially decided by a seven-play sequence toward the end of the third quarter.
Logan Tyler’s punt was smothered by Harris, racing in from the left side, and Dylan Moses fell on it at the Florida State 6. The Seminoles made an impressive stand, forcing Alabama to settle for Andy Pappanastos’ 25-yard field goal.
It was all for naught when, on the ensuing kickoff, Keith Gavin muffed the ball in the end zone, picked it up, ran into one of his own men, and then fumbled on a hit by Moses. Keith Holcombe recovered at the 11, and Harris ran up the middle for a touchdown on the very next play, splitting two would-be tacklers at the 5.
Florida State managed only 65 yards in the second half and finished with 250 in the game. Alabama had just 269 yards but it didn’ t really matter with all the chances created by the defense and special teams.
“This game tells us where we are, ” Saban said, “and where we need to go.”
The Tide looked very much like a team worthy of its No. 1 ranking. While the no-call on the potential pass interference penalty was a huge break, there was no doubt about the better team in this game. The offense still needs a bit of work, especially the passing game. Saban grumbled that his team “didn’ t make a lot of explosive plays.”
The Seminoles were looking to regain a bit of their swagger after back-to-back 10-3 seasons, which would be a cause for celebration at most schools but not in Tallahassee. Florida State thought it had the squad to contend again for a national title, but the offense was no match for the Crimson Tide. Throw in Francois’ injury, and the outlook is suddenly a whole lot bleaker.
Taking over as Alabama’s No. 1 kicker, Pappanastos had a rough night.
The transfer from Ole Miss kicked three field goals, also connecting from 35 and 33 yards, but he missed his two longest attempts of 42 and 41 yards.

Check out our roundup of the best new crowdfunding projects and product announcements that hit the web this week.
At any given moment, there are approximately a zillion different crowdfunding campaigns happening on the Web. Take a stroll through Kickstarter or Indiegogo and you’ ll find no shortage of weird, useless, and downright stupid projects out there – alongside some real gems. We’ ve cut through the Pebble clones and janky iPhone cases to round up the most unusual, ambitious, and exciting new crowdfunding projects out there this week. That said, keep in mind that any crowdfunding project — even the best intentioned — can fail, so do your homework before cutting a check for the gadget of your dreams.
Ever seen that sweet typographical clock that spells out the time in full words instead of numbers? The Qlocktwo, as it’s called, hit the scene a few years ago and has since gone on to win numerous awards for its innovative and visually appealing design. A couple years after its big debut, the company behind the clock released a smaller, more wrist-friendly version called the Qlocktwo W. It’s basically a watch with the same typographic clock face, just miniaturized a bit. The only problem, however, is that both the original and wrist-borne iterations of the Qlocktwo are outrageously expensive.
But don’ t fret — there’s a fresh new project up on Kickstarter for a wristwatch that boasts a very similar design — but for a tiny fraction of the price. The blandly-named Wooden Word Watch is exactly what it sounds like: a wooden watch that bears a striking resemblance to the Qlocktwo clock, and displays time typographically instead of numerically. The best part, however, is that you can reserve one now on Kickstarter for just $219 — nearly a quarter of the price of the Qlocktwo W. If you’ re a fan of good design or a watch collector looking to add a unique piece to your collection, this thing should definitely be on your radar.
High-performance textiles have come a long way in the past couple decades, and now gear manufacturers have a veritable boatload of different materials to choose from when designing stuff. There’s super lightweight stuff like cuben fiber, waterproof stuff like GoreTex, and even super durable slash-proof fabric like Dyneema. But the material the Wolverine Pack is made from makes the aforementioned textiles seem like they’ re from the Stone Age. This compressible utility pack is made from something called FuseFabric — a new material that allegedly has self-healing abilities.
In the unfortunate event that your Wolverine Pack should get punctured, all you need to do is pinch the fabric around the hole and rub it between your fingers. Due to the material’s unique construction, this slight bit of friction and heat will cause the fibers to bond with each other and fuse together again — thereby filling the puncture. We haven’ t seen this stuff in person yet, so we’ re still a bit wary about how effective it is — but there’s a pretty convincing video in the “prototyping” section of the campaign. Check it out and see for yourself!
Lock boxes come in just about every shape, size, and configuration these days. There are ones you can unlock with your fingerprint, ones that link to your smartphone, and even ones that call the cops if tampered with. Despite all this diversity and technological sophistication, however, most lockboxes suffer from the same drawback: they’ re heavy as hell. Because safes by definition should be hardy and tough to break into, the vast majority of them are made out of metal, which is inherently rigid, heavy, and inconvenient to carry along with you. But what if there was a lightweight, flexible option that still offered the same level of protection against thieves?
That’s precisely the idea behind FlexSafe. It’s totally unlike any lockbox you’ ve ever seen. Instead of layered steel, this badboy is made from a variety of special textiles that make it slash proof, smash-proof, and otherwise impervious to thieves. On top of that, the bag’s unique locking mechanism allows you to attach it to just about anything — be it a bike frame, a telephone pole, or even your deck chair at the pool. FlexSafe also boasts a variety of high-tech features as well, including an RFID-blocking interior, a motion-triggered alarm, and an optional power bank that recharges in the sun.
If you ever plan to visit different countries in a single trip, bringing along a universal travel adapter is crucial. Depending on where you land, the outlets are likely to be completely different than what you’ re used to — which means you’ ll need an adapter to juice up your electronics. Luckily, there are tons of universal travel adapters on the market right now. You can pick one up for under $20 on Amazon right now — but the thing is, most of them aren’ t so great. The vast majority of adapters you’ ll find aren’ t equipped with fuses, and virtually all of them are bulky and inconvenient for travel. Tofu is an attempt to change that.
Unlike most universal travel adapters, this one is designed to be slim, sleek, and travel friendly. On top of that, it’s also equipped with a fuseless design. Generally speaking, fuses are a good thing — as they prevent power surges from frying your devices. But they also have to be replaced after they burn up — which is inconvenient when you’ re traveling around a foreign country and don’ t know where to find a replacement. To avoid this, Tofu employs a fuseless system that’s allegedly still capable of protecting your laptop from unexpected power surges.
Ever wished you could design custom jewelry the same way you design a custom t-shirt? Well if Chicago-based upstart Bezel succeeds with its freshly-launched Kickstarter campaign, you might soon be able to. In an effort to disrupt the jewelry industry, Bezel has developed an innovative platform that allows you to design, scale, and print jewelry from your smartphone or tablet. And we’ re not talking about cheap plastic either. Thanks to recent advances in 3D printing technology, anything you design on Bezel can be printed in real, jewelry-grade metal.
What’s more, that’s not even the coolest part. Once you’ ve uploaded your design, you can actually use the app to “wear” your creation virtually to see how it looks on you. The real innovation, however, is in Bezel’s sizing process. The app uses your smartphone’s camera (and a bundle of highly-sophisticated algorithms) to calculate the circumference of your fingers and determine your ring size. Believe it or not, Bezel’s software is so precise that it can approximate ring circumference for every digit on your hand, with millimeter accuracy. All that information is stored in the cloud and can be applied to any future designs you upload.

Arabs, Kurds unite against IS, but post-victory? 'God knows'

0

RAQQA, Syria (AP) — The two fighters, one an Arab sniper, the other his Kurdish commander, are each driven…
RAQQA, Syria (AP) — The two fighters, one an Arab sniper, the other his Kurdish commander, are each driven by a personal grudge against the Islamic State group. They are working side by side in an elite commando unit of the U. S.-backed forces fighting the militants in the Syrian city of Raqqa.
But they have vastly different visions of what happens once they succeed.
Abdullah, the Arab fighter, fears the militants‘ fall in Raqqa will only be the start of more turmoil. He worries it will unleash a wave of bloodshed among the area’s Sunni Arab community as residents seek revenge on neighbors who joined the group.
For Erdal, the Kurd and the unit commander, the battle for Raqqa is a step toward realizing his people’s dream of autonomy in the Kurdish heartland of northern Syria. Next, he and many other Kurds believe, will come a fight with their nemesis Turkey, which has sent troops into Syria in part to thwart Kurdish ambitions.
Another danger once IS falls is of a backlash among Raqqa’s Sunni Arab population against the Kurds. Many in the community deeply resent Kurdish ambitions and see their hopes for self-rule as intended to break apart the country.
The two men’s views reflect the differing priorities run through the alliance between Kurdish and Arab fighters in the Syrian Democratic Forces, which the United States forged together to wage the fight against the Islamic State group. The SDF has proven a startling success in bringing together Kurds and Arabs. The more experienced and organized Kurds dominate command and some units are purely Kurd or purely Arab, but most SDF units are mixed, with few signs among the fighters of the tensions plaguing their communities at large as Kurdish influence grows in northern Syria.
It is largely the hands-on U. S. support that ensures that cohesion, raising questions over what happens when the American role eventually pulls back. For Arab fighters, the force is a chance to get vital training, funds and experience from the Americans, working alongside U. S. special forces advisers on the front lines. U. S. officials say the SDF, estimated at 50,000 fighters, is 50 percent Arab, with new recruits coming from liberated areas in Raqqa province.
This week, IS released a grisly video warning Arabs not to join with the Kurds. „You will regret it, “ a bearded militant sitting by the banks of a river says, telling Arab tribes they will face „bitter revenge.“ The footage then shows militants beheading a captured Arab fighter.
The Kurds, meanwhile, see the alliance with the United States as essential to securing their hold across northern Syria „from the threat of an attack by Turkey or the Syrian regime, “ said Noah Bonsey, a Syria expert with the International Crisis Group. Moreover, the more they capture in eastern Syria the stronger their hand is in the future as all sides try to carve out zones of power in the country.
„If they don’t want the confrontation (with Turkey) , (Washington) has to find a solution, “ Erdal said on a recent afternoon only miles from the frontline in Raqqa.
Abdullah and Erdal spoke to The Associated Press between their unit’s assaults into the city. Both fighters go by one name to protect their identities. Erdal’s name is a nom de guerre, a common practice in the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, known as the YPG, which form the backbone of the SDF.
„What comes after IS, only God knows, “ said Abdullah.
___
THE KURDISH COMMANDER
At 23, Erdal is an experienced veteran of the Syrian Kurds‘ campaign to stake their claims. He has fought in the ranks of the YPG since he was 17 and took part in most of the major battles since, whether against Islamic State militants or against rival rebels in northern Syria.
In 2015, Erdal’s uncle was kidnapped by IS after the militants accused him of trying to free women from enslavement. For months, he remained in their custody until they beheaded him earlier this year along with others in a public square in Raqqa.
Erdal’s coming of age was in the 2016 battle with IS for northern town of Manbij. That grueling, 3-month-long fight is a milestone burned into the Kurdish fighters‘ consciousness. They lost hundreds of men before capturing the town, while learning key combat lessons. The fight cemented their place as the Americans‘ main partner on the ground, but it was also the Kurdish hold on Manbij that prompted Turkey to send troops into Syria to push the YPG back from its borders.
Erdal and his superiors look at the Raqqa battle through the lens of Manbij battle.
„Manbij was much harder, “ he said. With their ground shrinking inside Raqqa, the militants are less able to carry out their signature spectacular attacks using car bombs as they did in Raqqa, he said, speaking before heading off for a mission by the unit into the city.
„The next fight is with Turkey, 90 percent, “ said Erdal. He accuses Turkey of using the Islamic militants to its advantage at times, to curb the aspirations of Kurdish groups.
Ankara sees the YPG as an extension of Kurdish insurgent groups in Turkey and calls all of them terrorists. Fearing the Syrian Kurdish forces‘ newfound confidence, Turkey has picked a fight with them with skirmishes at Afrin, a town more than 200 kilometers (120 miles) away from Raqqa in northwest Syria.
That is where the next battle will be, many Kurds feel — putting the United States in a tough position between two allies. Confrontations have already flared in SDF-controlled Manbij where U. S. forces have deployed to ward off further tension.
„We can finish here and go support Afrin, “ said Erdal, who married earlier this year.
___
THE ARAB FIGHTER
Abdullah gets along well with his Kurdish commander. He and Erdal joke in Arabic, while the Syrian Kurdish language Kurmanji is more commonly heard on the battlefield among the commanders. At his urging, Erdal joined a troop dance ahead of the battle, performing the Arabic version of a traditional dance. Abdullah, meanwhile, wears the same colorful, beaded scarf that Kurdish fighters often wear on the front lines.
Erdal praises Abdullah’s prowess. During a recent thrust into Raqqa, Abdullah detected four IS militants trying to sneak up on the force and killed two of them.
Thin, sun-baked and constantly smoking, Abdullah came into Erdal’s unit with valuable experience: During his required military service years ago, he was in the 4th Armored Division, one of the best trained and equipped units in Syria’s military. Abdullah’s brother had joined the YPG earlier and was killed in battle with IS, something Abdullah and his commanders recall with pride.
„We are going to Raqqa for a reason. Revenge against IS, “ Abdullah said.
In his hometown of Ain Issa, north of Raqqa city, he endured IS rule for three years.
In one instance, IS fighters beat him and forced him to beat his wife in public because she wasn’t adhering to IS’s strict dress code for women. It was a personal humiliation he said he can never forgive.
He also smuggled cigarettes into IS-run territory, prompting his arrest by the militants. Hemanaged to escape, but IS in Raqqa still has his personal ID card.
So now, he jokes, he’s fighting to liberate Raqqa to get his card back.
But he said what comes after the Raqqa battle could be frightening: The city’s residents know their tormentors and abusers from the Islamic State group personally since many were local Syrians — and will probably seek individual revenge. He said that after Raqqa falls, he and Arab fighters will „lay down our arms and stay at home. We want to avoid civil war.“
The other potential danger is fallout over who will run Raqqa. Some Arabs are wary of any sign that the Kurds are trying to dominate the region.
„The first fight will be which flag to raise in Raqqa after it is liberated, “ said Ali al-Mattar, a 17-year-old Arab fighter in the same unit. He said the problem won’t be the Arab foot soldiers like himself but Arab commanders in the SDF who feel marginalized by Kurdish leaders.
The U. S. is trying to avert frictions by creating a policing force made up of Raqqa residents called the Internal Security Forces. So far hundreds have graduated from American training, and plans are for some 4,000 members of the force to deploy in Raqqa.
Khaled Hendawi, a 23-year old Arab fighter with the SDF for more than a year, said Arabs in the ranks of the force don’t seek leadership yet. „We need to learn organization first if we want to be elevated.“
But that doesn’t mean there isn’t potential for strife.
„Anyone who starts by turning against the other side will be the biggest loser, “ he said.

The Philippine government on Sunday expressed its worry over reports that North Korea has succeeded in developing a hydrogen bomb.
The Philippine government on Sunday expressed its worry over reports that North Korea has succeeded in developing a hydrogen bomb.
“We are gravely concerned over this hydrogen bomb testing by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) , ” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said in a statement. “Such provocative actions undermine regional peace and stability.”
Cayetano, who is currently in Seoul for an official visit, said North Korea’s actions not only resulted in the flouting of its commitments to United Nations Security Council resolutions but also limited “available options for meaningful dialogue to address the real issues confronting the Korean Peninsula.”
“The Philippines urges the DPRK to return to the negotiating table. Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is ready to play a role in creating diplomatic space to effect meaningful dialogue, ” Cayetano said.
The Philippines is this year’s Asean chair.
Cayetano, who met with Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for Asia-Pacific Affairs Millicent Cruz-Paredes and Ambassador to Seoul Raul Hernandez to discuss the situation, ordered embassy staff in Seoul to ensure the safety of the 65,000 Filipinos living and working in South Korea.
He asked that Filipinos be made aware of the embassy’s contingency plans in case the situation worsens.
Cayetano reportedly met with 300 members of the Filipino community in Seoul and advised them to monitor the embassy’s social media accounts for emergency alerts and advisories.
North Korea has been subjected to UN Security Council sanctions because of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
A few days ago, it launched a ballistic missile that flew over the Japanese island of Hokkaido. /atm

After generations, salmon back in Lake Champlain tributaries

After generations, salmon back in Lake Champlain tributaries
For the first time in about 150 years, landlocked Atlantic salmon are once again swimming up some Lake Champlain tributaries in Vermont and New York to spawn in gravel banks, biologists say.
It hasn’t come easy, and the process will require continued human intervention to make sure the salmon that hatch in Vermont’s Winooski River or New York’s Boquet River can make it to the lake and then return when it’s their time to reproduce.
Biologists call it a success story produced by a better understanding of the salmon, reduction in the numbers of parasitic sea lamprey in Lake Champlain, improved water conditions in the tributaries, and help the fish got to navigate around dams responsible for loss of the original salmon in the 1800s.
„Salmon are a great indicator species for looking at how well we are doing, “ said Bill Ardren, a senior fish biologist with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service who works on the Lake Champlain salmon restoration program.
„So when you start to see salmon reproducing naturally, and the juveniles surviving, that is starting to show that we are making progress in restoring that aquatic ecosystem, “ he said.
The biologists have worked with their counterparts in the Pacific Northwest to better understand the fish.
The salmon restoration program for Lake Champlain began in the 1970s when the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the wildlife agencies from Vermont and New York started stocking salmon and lake trout. In the early years, the program was hampered by the presence of invasive sea lamprey that populated the area via 19th-century canals.
A long-term sea lamprey control program began in 2002, and now sections of the lake are treated every fall to kill them.
„Initially we had no fish coming back to our rivers, but now that the wounding rates are lower, we have more fish out there surviving; the numbers of salmon returning to our streams and rivers along the lake have increased dramatically, “ said Nicholas Staats, a federal fish biologist.
In autumn 2014, for the first time in about 150 years, biologists discovered salmon redds, areas where the fish used their tails to dig holes in the gravel where eggs were laid, in the Huntington River near Richmond. In spring 2016, the biologists discovered young salmon that came from eggs laid in autumn 2015.
Now broad sections of the Winooski River, just downstream from the Huntington, are ideal salmon spawning grounds. Ardren, Staats and others hope more salmon, averaging 22 inches (56 centimeters) long and weighing up to 13 pounds (5.9 kilograms) and will return there at the end of October to continue the cycle.
To make that happen, the state and federal government have been working to carry returning salmon above three Winooski River dams to make it possible for them to reach their spawning grounds. Two years ago, a dam was removed from New York’s Boquet River, but biologists are still helping the fish upstream.
This fall’s run is expected to begin later this month.
There is still a long way to go. In Vermont, biologists stock about 30,000 young fish each year. Over the past several years, the biologists have watched returning fish increase from between 10 and 20 a year to between 100 and 200.
Biologists consider that a good number and they expect it to increase.
Last week, Staats and four fish experts from the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife spent the morning on the Huntington catching some of the salmon that were stocked last year. The fish, caught with an electrofishing system, were released after they were measured.
„This year we found 16 salmon in this stretch of the river from last fall’s stocking, which is pretty good, “ Staats said.
