Trumps donate one million dollars to 12 organisations for Harvey relief

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are donating a total of one million US dollars (£766,000) to a dozen organisations involved in Harvey relief work.
President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are donating a total of one million US dollars (£766,000) to a dozen organisations involved in Harvey relief work.
The White House said charities including the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity would benefit from the money.
The American Red Cross and Salvation Army will each receive 300,000 US dollars (£230,000) while Samaritan’s Purse and Reachout America will collect 100,000 US dollars (£77,000) each. The Trumps are giving 25,000 US dollars (£19,000) each to eight other good causes: the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Catholic Charities, Direct Relief, Habitat for Humanity, Houston Humane Society, Operation Blessing, Portlight Inclusive Disaster Strategies and Team Rubicon.
The money would come from the president’s personal funds, the White House added. The Gulf Coast of Texas was battered by Harvey when it made landfall on August 25 as a Category 4 hurricane and was later downgraded to a tropical storm.
Up to 50 inches of rain fell in Houston and surrounding areas with homes and roads being left underwater for days. „Our hearts are heavy with sadness for those who lost everything, “ Mr Trump said at an event in North Dakota to pitch his plan for overhauling the tax code.
„They’ve also filled us with hope, “ he said, speaking of having witnessed the „unyielding strength and resilience of the American spirit“. White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said the Trumps saw some of these groups in action while visiting with hurricane survivors, emergency responders, volunteers and government officials during their visits to the region.
The American Red Cross said it is „grateful to the Trumps for their generous support of our mission“. The White House first said last week that Mr Trump wanted to make a donation, and sought suggestions from journalists on where he should contribute.
„He would like to join in the efforts that a lot of the people that we’ve seen across this country do, “ White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters last week, two days after Mr Trump first visited post-Harvey Texas. „And he’s pledging a million dollars of personal money to the fund, “ Mr Sanders said „And he’s actually asked that I check with the folks in this room, since you are very good at research and have been doing a lot of reporting into the groups and organisations that are best and most effective in helping and providing aid, and he’d love some suggestions from the folks here.“
Mr Trump met with three relief groups – the American Red Cross, Southern Baptist Relief and Salvation Army – in the Oval Office last Friday. AP

Facebook says likely Russian-based operation funded US ads with political message

0

Facebook said 3,000 ads and 470 „inauthentic“ accounts and pages spread polarizing views on topics including immigration, race and gay rights.
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 6 (Reuters) – Facebook Inc said on Wednesday it had found that an operation likely based in Russia spent $100,000 on thousands of U. S. ads promoting divisive social and political messages in a two-year-period through May.
Facebook, the dominant social media network, said 3,000 ads and 470 „inauthentic“ accounts and pages spread polarizing views on topics including immigration, race and gay rights.
Another $50,000 was spent on 2,200 „potentially politically related“ ads, likely by Russians, Facebook said.
U. S. election law bars foreign nationals and foreign entities from spending money to expressly advocate the election or defeat of a candidate. Non-U. S. citizens may generally advertise on issues. Other ads, such as those that mention a candidate but do not call for the candidate’s election or defeat, fall into what lawyers have called a legal gray area.
Facebook announced the findings in a blog post by its chief security officer, Alex Stamos, and said that it was cooperating with federal inquiries into influence operations during the 2016 U. S. presidential election.
Facebook briefed members of both the Senate and House of Representatives intelligence committees on Wednesday about the suspected Russia advertising, according to a congressional source familiar with the matter. Both committees are conducting probes into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U. S. election, including potential collusion between the campaign of President Donald Trump and Moscow.
Facebook also gave its findings to Robert Mueller, the special counsel in charge of investigating alleged Russian interference in last year’s presidential election, a source familiar with the matter said. The company produced copies of advertisements as well as data about the buyers, the source said.
Mueller’s office declined to comment.
Facebook said it found no link between the Russian-purchased advertising and any specific presidential campaign. The ads were mostly national in their focus and did not appear to reflect targeting of political swing-states, the company said.
Even if no laws were violated, Facebook said the 470 accounts and pages associated with the ads ran afoul of the social network’s requirements for authenticity and have since been suspended.
Facebook did not print the names of any of the suspended pages, but some of them included such words as „refugee“ and „patriot.“
More than $1 billion was spent on political ads during the 2016 presidential campaign, thousands of times more than the presumed Russian spending identified by Facebook’s security team.
But the findings buttress U. S. intelligence agency conclusions that Russia was actively involved in shaping the election.
Facebook previously published a white paper on influence operations, including what it said were fake „amplifier“ accounts for propaganda, and said it was cracking down.
As recently as June, Facebook told journalists that it had not found any evidence of Russian operatives buying election-related ads on its platform.
„TROLL FACTORY“ CONNECTION
Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, called theFacebook report „deeply disturbing and yet fully consistent with the unclassified assessment of the intelligence community.“
„We are keenly interested in Russia’s use of social media platforms, both the use of bots and trolls to spread disinformation and propaganda, including through the use of paid online advertising, “ he said in a statement.
A Facebook employee said Wednesday that there were unspecified connections between the divisive issue ads and a well-known Russian „troll factory“ in St. Petersburg that publishes comments on social media.
Ellen Weintraub, a member of the U. S. Federal Election Commission, said U. S. voters deserve to know where the ads are coming from and that the money behind them is legal.
„It is unlawful for foreign nationals to be spending money in connection with any federal, state or local election, directly or indirectly, “ Weintraub said in a phone interview.
She declined to comment on the Facebook ads, saying she could not discuss subjects that could come before the agency.
Facebook declined to release the ads themselves, prompting a sharp rebuke on Twitter from Pierre Omidyar, the billionaire founder of First Look Media, a producer of feature and documentary films, television and podcasts.
„Facebook keeps the targeted political ads it publishes secret, emboldening criminals, “ wrote Omidyar, the eBay founder who also provided funding to launch media organization The Intercept.
Facebook’s disclosure may be the first time a private entity has pointed to receiving Russian money related to U. S. elections, said Brendan Fischer, a program director at the Campaign Legal Center, a Washington nonprofit that advocates for more transparency.
„Whoever may have provided assistance to Russia in buying these Facebook ads is very likely in violation of the law, “ he said, adding that Facebook has a legal duty to act if it is aware of similar activity in the future.

Procurement system upgrade highlights Rio Tinto's hesitance to change

0

Upgrading the mining giant’s contract system took 12 months to approve, Rio’s source process and improvement manager has revealed.
Mining behemoth Rio Tinto has 45 operational sites spread across the world, resulting in the creation of around 2,500 contracts and 1,000 variations each year.
In its sourcing and contracts team alone, Rio Tinto employs 350 to 400 people globally.
Speaking at the recent SAP Ariba Live conference in Sydney, Rio Tinto’s source process and improvement manager Rick Steele ‎detailed the struggle he had with moving the procurement sector off paper and into a more efficient way of working, and highlighted the cultural hesitation the Australian-British multinational has against change.
Rio Tinto upgraded its procurement software to SAP Ariba in 2010, before the ERP giant acquired the vendor in 2012.
„It took me 12 months in Rio to get final approval, and if the Iron Ore CFO hadn’t heard about it and jumped on the horse and helped me, I’m not sure I would have ever got legal, because legal just kept saying you don’t understand the risks so we don’t want to take the step, “ Steele explained.
While Steele implemented the Ariba platform across Rio’s procurement segment, he said he wishes he had moved ahead with SAP end to end.
„We started the journey just on trying to improve our sourcing, trying to improve compliance, so we could have a system where all of our people were sourcing projects in the same manner. We’re not worried about what forms or how — we just wanted to have standard processes to follow and realistically have an electronic database to put all our contracts in, “ Steele said.
„We currently have about 13,000 contracts stored electronically in Ariba; prior to that, we had them all in safes somewhere in the world.“
The main problem with that, Steele said, is these contracts could be in any of the 35 countries Rio Tinto has staff in.
„At least now we have electronic copies of it, “ he added.
Offering advice to those charged with upgrading a process in an established organisation like Rio Tinto, Steele warned others to be prepared to change internally to fit the system.
„I’d always prefer to change my model than change the system I’m working in, “ he said, labelling the organisation’s change management training a „horror story“.
Running late with its scheduled go-live date, Steele said the organisation decided to skip the training for all of the staff using it, and train only a handful who would then pass on their knowledge to others in their respective regions.
„I know now we’ve still got people there seven years later still struggling to use Ariba, simply because they were there for the first week and they’re just never going to get over it, “ he said.
With pricing not going to be the driving force in contracts moving forward, Steele said he plans to expand the Ariba platform to work more closely with suppliers to ensure Rio Tinto harnesses all of the value out of the contract process it can.

Facebook finds fake 'divisive' Russian ads

Hundreds of fake Facebook accounts, probably run from Russia, spent about $100,000 (€83,855) on ads aimed at stirring up divisive issues such as gun control and race relations during the 2016 US presidential election, the social network said yesterday.
Although the number of ads is relatively small, the disclosure provides a more detailed peek into what investigators believe was a targeted effort by Russians to influence US politics during the campaign, this time through social media.
The 470 accounts appeared to come from a notorious „troll farm, “ a St. Petersburg-based organisation known for promoting pro-Russian government positions via fake accounts, according to two people familiar with the investigation. The people were granted anonymity because they weren’t authorised to publicly discuss details of the investigation.
In all, the accounts purchased some 3,000 ads between June 2015 and May 2017. While they ads didn’t specifically reference the election, a candidate or voting, they nevertheless allowed „divisive messages“ to be amplified via the social media platform, the company’s chief security officer, Alex Stamos, said.

Most powerful solar flare in decade causes radio blackouts

0

High-frequency radio experienced a wide area of blackouts and loss of contact for an hour – low frequency communication also hit.
Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation and they disrupted radio communications over large areas of the Earth, said the Space Weather Prediction Centre (SWPC) .
The SWPC said high-frequency radio experienced a wide area of blackouts, loss of contact for up to an hour over the sunlit side of Earth, and low frequency communication, used in navigation, was degraded for an hour.
NASA says radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth’s atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground.
However, when they are strong enough, they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.
The flares took place early on Wednesday morning (US time) .
One was clasisfied as an X2.2, while the second which happened three hours later was an X9.3 – the strongest since an X9.0 in 2006.
X-class flares are the most intense. The number indicates its strength.
An X2 is twice as powerful as an X1, while an X3 is three times as intense.

New York state is getting nearly $26 million in federal funds to reimburse law enforcement agencies for costs associated with guarding President Donald Trump, his family and their Manhattan residence.
Congresswoman Nita Lowey announced the grants Wednesday. She says the money covers costs incurred during the 2 1/2 months between Election Day and the Republican president’s Inauguration Day.
Lowey is a Democrat and a ranking member on the House Appropriations Committee.
The New York Police Department is getting $18.9 million. The Suffolk County Police Department is getting $7 million.
NYPD commissioner James O’Neill had written to New York’s congressional delegation seeking the reimbursement. The original estimate had been lowered from $35 million to $24 million.
Democratic New York Mayor Bill de Blasio says his city’s taxpayers are getting back part of what they’re owed.
