Winds, fire, floods and quakes: A nutty run of nature

0

With four big hurricanes, a powerful earthquake and wildfires, it seems that nature recently has just gone nuts.
WASHINGTON (AP) – With four big hurricanes, a powerful earthquake and wildfires, it seems that nature recently has just gone nuts.
Some of these disasters, like Friday’s earthquake in Mexico, are natural. Others may end up having a mix of natural and man-made ingredients after scientists examine them. We also always tend to look for patterns and order in chaos, even when they aren’t there, psychologists say.
„Nature’s gone crazy, “ mused Jeff Masters, meteorology director at the private service Weather Underground. „Welcome to the future. Extreme weather like this is going to be occurring simultaneously more often because of global warming.“
A look at a rough few weeks in North America:
HURRICANE QUARTET
Hurricane Harvey hadn’t even fizzled and Houston hadn’t even dried out from record flooding before Hurricane Irma formed and also grew into a powerful Category 4 storm. Right behind Irma, Jose has powered up to a Category 4 storm. It is highly unusual, but not unprecedented to have back-to-back storms of that strength, Masters said. And then there is Hurricane Katia, just a shade under major hurricane status, due to hit Mexico’s Gulf coast.
The last couple of years were quiet for Atlantic hurricanes, which makes this year seem even worse, said Colorado State University meteorology professor Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane expert. He said calculations that measure strength and duration show the three current Atlantic storms set a one-day record for energy on Friday. In just three days, Irma, Jose and Katia have produced as much as energy as about half a normal six-month hurricane season.
EARTHQUAKE
As Mexico was bracing for Katia off the Gulf coast, one of the strongest earthquakes in the country’s history hit late Thursday off its Pacific coast, near the Guatemala border. The magnitude 8.1 earthquake was felt for more than 650 miles (1,000 kilometers) . The quake shook at a depth of 43 miles (69 kilometers) and a quake hitting at that depth with that strength is unusual, according to Cornell University geophysics professor Geoff Abers. It was one of the five largest for that deep in the past 40 years, he said.
WILDFIRES
On Friday, 82 wildfires were burning in the United States involving nearly 1.5 million acres in nine states in the West. So far this year, more than 8 million acres have burned, only behind 2015 and 2012. One fire at the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest in Oregon has burned more than 175,000 acres and is only 5 percent contained as of Friday, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
Drought and a heat wave contributed. On Sept. 1, in normally temperate San Francisco, the temperature hit 106 degrees and at least six deaths were reported from the heat wave.
WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?
Sometimes there’s a pattern in chaos. Sometimes there isn’t. Looking for patterns gives us a sense of control, even if we don’t really have it, said Scott Lilienfeld, a psychology professor at Emory University in Atlanta. „The human mind is a pattern-seeking organ, ‚“ he said. „That’s how our minds work.“
It can take weeks or months for scientists to determine whether an extreme weather event was worsened by man-made climate change. But scientists have long predicted that the strongest hurricanes will get stronger and wetter, fueled by warmer ocean water. And some say the recent global increase in powerful hurricanes fits perfectly with global warming.
While warming may play a small role, so does Twitter and Facebook in making things appear worse, said Klotzbach.
„It just feels like, you know, it’s the apocalyptic end times, “ he said. „But a lot of this stuff is getting attention because of social media.“

Steve Bannon is 'absolutely' going to war with GOP leaders

0

The former WH chief strategist, blasted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan for not supporting President Trump’s agenda.
Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist, blasted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan for not supporting President Donald Trump’s agenda and declared he was „absolutely“ going to war with them.
McConnell and Ryan “do not want Donald Trump’s populist, nationalist economic agenda to be implemented, ” Bannon told CBS’ “60 Minutes, ” in an interview airing Friday. “It’s as obvious as night follows day.”
Bannon also agreed that he was “absolutely” going to war with the “Republican establishment, ” whom he accused of “trying to nullify the 2016 election.”
“That’s a brutal fact we have to face, ” he said.
Bannon’s sharp remarks represent an escalating intra-party battle within the GOP that has sometimes pitted Trump against the party’s most influential leaders in Congress.
Bannon said he was attacking Republican leaders because “they’ re not going to help you unless they’ ve been put on notice they’ re going to be held accountable if they don’ t support the president of the United States.”
“Right now there’s no accountability, ” he continued. “They do not support the president’s program, it’s an open secret on Capitol Hill, everybody in this city knows it.”
Bannon also recalled from “one of the first meetings” he participated in with McConnell and Trump, where he said the Kentucky Republican ripped the administration’s “drain the swamp” motto.
“He basically says, ‘I don’t want to hear any more of this drain the swamp talk,’ ” Bannon said, adding that McConnell told him, “I can’ t hire any smart people because everybody is all over them for reporting requirements, and the pay, etcetera, you’ ve got to back off that.”
In another portion of the interview, released on Thursday, Bannon accused the Catholic Church of defending DACA only because it relies on “illegal aliens to fill the churches” and said Gary Cohn, Trump’s chief economic adviser, had “an obligation to resign.”
The full interview will air Sunday on CBS.
Meanwhile, Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N. C., the chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus whom the Washington Post reported could be plotting with Bannon to oust Ryan as Speaker, told MSNBC Friday morning that he’ d spoken with Bannon within the last 48 hours but denied he was working on a plan to see a new speaker take over.
“We’ re laser focused. Not on a leadership change, but making sure that we change Washington D. C., ” Meadows said, adding that “there is no plan” to attempt to replace Ryan.
Bannon, who returned as chairman of Breitbart News after leaving the White House last month, has made no secret of his desire to battle with his political enemies.
Following his White House departure, Bannon, who’ d been a central figure in a power struggle over influencing an often unpredictable president, told the Weekly Standard he had his “hands back on my weapons” and vowed “to crush the opposition.”
The feud between Trump and McConnell has also grown, since the party’s plan to repeal and replace Obamacare failed. Tensions only worsened this week after Trump struck a deal with Democratic leaders over the debt ceiling, leaving his fellow R epublicans reeling.
Trump appeared to take a shot at Republicans on Twitter Friday morning, blasting them again for their health care failure and urging them to „hurry“ on tax reform.
„Republicans, sorry, but I’ve been hearing about Repeal & Replace for 7 years, didn’t happen! Even worse, the Senate Filibuster Rule will…….never allow the Republicans to pass even great legislation. 8 Dems control – will rarely get 60 (vs. 51) votes. It is a Repub Death Wish!“ he tweeted in a pair of posts.
„Republicans must start the Tax Reform/Tax Cut legislation ASAP. Don’t wait until the end of September. Needed now more than ever. Hurry!“ he added.

Does registry for high school coaches go far enough to protect students?

0

All high school coaches are required to certify with the Utah High School Activities Association, but some members of the Utah State Board of Education worry the registry doesn’t do enough to protect students from predators.
SALT LAKE CITY — All high school coaches are required to certify with the Utah High School Activities Association, but some members of the Utah State Board of Education worry the registry doesn’t do enough to protect students from predators.
All high school coaches — paid or volunteer — are required to certify with the UHSAA registry, the organization’s Executive Director Rob Cuff told the State School Board on Friday.
To receive certification, coaches must undergo criminal background checks and complete training on CPR, first aid and concussion protocols, as well as the National Federation of State High School Associations Fundamentals of Coaching course.
Following the Utah Legislature’s general session earlier this year, the State School Board passed an administrative rule that creates other requirements: child sexual abuse prevention training, and bullying, cyber bullying, hazing, harassment and retaliation training.
But some members of the Utah State Board of Education worry that the scope of the registry doesn’t go far enough to protect student-athletes from coaches who have had inappropriate contact with students.
„You just have to know, for me, it’s all about the safety of these kids, “ said board member Laura Belnap.
While the registry will be able to track previous coaching assignments, it won’t necessarily have any information about why a coach was released because the terminations occur at the school level and the UHSAA may not know or attorneys caution against collecting information if coaches have no ability to rebut it, Cuff said.
Schools hire and fire coaches, he said, and the association often is not privy to reasons coaches are terminated.
Perhaps given additional training or under a policy school officials could be required check all coaches‘ histories before giving them access to high school students who participate in UHSAA-sanctioned sports and activities, Cuff said.
„We’re not a hiring and firing organization. We run state tournaments for kids, and we want safety for kids more than anything, “ he said.
Board member Scott Nielson said he has worked extensively in high school athletics and it is a tight-knit community. If someone crosses the line, news travels fast, he said.
„I can say with almost 100 percent certainty, if there is someone that’s involved (in something) that’s questionable, there’s not a single school administrator that I’ve met (who is) going to allow anybody around their kids, their school, regardless of their coaching ability, “ Nielson said.
But that was little assurance to board member Brittney Cummins.
„We hear stories over and over and over again of times when it doesn’t occur and when students are harmed by people who slipped through the cracks, intentionally sometimes, “ she said.
Dunlap said it is particularly worrisome when coaches are not public school employees.
„You have nonpaid people on this list who can jump around and go where they want and have access to children, “ she said.
Cummins said if the activities association can certify coaches, it can also decertify them.
„Finding a solution to this problem is very important, “ she said.
Cuff agreed to continue the conversation.

Electric vehicles: Toyota Chairman is asleep at the wheel. Will he wake up, or drive into the ditch?

Earlier this week, Takeshi Uchiyamada, the chairman of top-selling automaker Toyota, explained why he didn’ t understand the quick transition to electric vehicles that many of us see on the horizon. Or, if most of you reading this and I are absolutely off our rockers, he explained what we are ignorantly ignoring.
Mr Uchiyamada made a few key points anti-selling electric cars. Below, I’ ll explain why I think each of them is incorrect or misleading. After that, I’ ll expound on why I think it’s harder for Toyota than others to accept the transition to electric cars.
In the interview with  CNBC, he stated, “But in order for electric vehicles to cover long distances, they currently need to be loaded with a lot of batteries that take a considerable amount of time to charge.” Indeed, sort of, but  that misses context and some top-of-market examples. First of all, the vast majority of driving is not long distances. In the USA (where people drive approximately twice as much as Europeans) , we drive fewer than 150 miles nearly 100% of the days in a year. Furthermore, nearly 100% of trips are 50 miles or less.
Yes, charging may take a while, but if you have a car with 150 miles of range and can charge it at home or work, you almost never have to charge it somewhere else — and, of course, you don’ t stand next to the car uselessly while it’s charging.
Also note that many households have two cars. If you have two cars and only drive more than 150 miles in a day a few times a year, one of your cars almost definitely doesn’ t need to think about charging on a long trip.
On long-distance trips, an electric car with a decently sized battery (like a Tesla Model 3) can drive 3–5 hours on a full charge. By then, a normal human needs a break to use the restroom, stretch, and perhaps eat and drink a bit. Depending on where you need to go next, you can spend 30 minutes to 1.5 hours charging while doing those things and then be on your way. Sure, if you needed to spend just 10 minutes charging, that would be even more seamless, but it wouldn’ t end up changing your needs that much — you still need to use the restroom, stretch, perhaps eat and drink a bit, and check your smartphone for various notifications. And, again, remember that such trips only account for maybe 1–4 days out of the year for most people.
Also, it’s not just Tesla that is creating competitive long-range electric cars now — GM, Nissan, and Renault already have options on the market. As far as charging, superfast charging is indeed a must for a convenient long-distance trip and only Tesla offers that right now, but Toyota partnered with Tesla in the past and  could do so again.
But a core thing to remember is that the vast majority of charging can be done at home or work, saving consumers hours of their lives that they would have spent going to gas stations. In the grand scheme of things, electric cars today may already be  more convenient  than gasoline cars.
Mr Uchiyamada’s next line: “There’s also the issue of battery life.” This is an odd one. Tesla expects its batteries to last  at least 10–15 years   inside the cars. After that, it’s not as though the batteries are useless. They can either be  recycled  and most of the materials can be used again, or they can be  repurposed  for use as stationary storage. Either way, there’s still a lot of value left in the batteries.
But let’s be realistic, buyers aren’ t thinking 15 years out when deciding which car to buy, and real-world experience indicates that electric cars on the roads today aren’ t losing range significantly enough to be a deterrent to customer satisfaction and future sales — except in the case of one company that decided to not use adequate battery pack management in super hot climates, but even that has seemingly been resolved.
A closing statement on electric cars? How’s the following one? “But as laws and regulations (that encourage the development of electric vehicles) come into effect in places like China and the U. S., car makers will have no choice but to roll out electric vehicles or risk going out of business. Toyota is no exception, but we’ re skeptical there would be a rapid shift to pure electric vehicles, given questions over user convenience.”
Such comments about consumer demand amaze me in the face of 455,000 reservations for a single car model —  the Model 3. And it’s not even a CUV! Tesla didn’ t engage in black magic to gain those reservations. All it did was offer a compelling mixture of range, price, tech, performance, and charging capability. Plus a mission to help save the world.
When millions of drivers show their friends and family how  convenient  home/workplace charging and EV life are, the next wave of electric car adopters will come out and be ready to plug their car into a  home charging station. At this point, we are well beyond a “proof of concept” — we have received proof of demand. Okay, if you want to wait for actual production and deliveries before getting excited, go ahead, but if you’ re the head of a major car company, that’s the last thing you should be waiting for.
There’s a trend in technology transitions — the leaders of one transition have a tendency to slowly embrace the next. When you think of normal hybrids (not plug-in hybrids) , you think of one of two things — Toyota or the Toyota Prius. That’s nearly universal.
Being the leader in the “hybrid generation” of electrification, it is not surprising that Toyota would like to hold onto that lead and would like that market to retain its status as the big dog of “green vehicles.” Denying the  superior benefits of plug-in electric cars (like convenience of home/workplace charging) is one way to delay the forecasted transition in your mind, and it’s also a way to try to discourage electric car sales — consciously or subconsciously.
But a rather funny thing from the very beginning of that CNBC interview is that Mr Uchiyamada admits he and his team were even surprised by the rapid uptake of success of hybrids! They didn’ t see so much latent demand for more fuel efficient vehicles using hybrid drivetrains. While Toyota did get lucky anyway and bust up that big market, it seems the heads of the company are again discounting the latent consumer demand for cars that are better in several ways and that have only a couple of downsides. It also comes across like they are unaware of the progress electric vehicle tech is making at other companies or they are just trying to block it out.
It’s a bit shocking to see the lack of vision and lack of understanding for how markets shift from the chairman of the world’s largest automaker. But hey, some things are hard to see when you sit atop a very tall chair.

Helicopter crash kills country singer Troy Gentry and pilot

LUMBERTON, N. J…
LUMBERTON, N. J. (AP) — A helicopter carrying singer Troy Gentry, of the award-winning country music duo Montgomery Gentry, crashed on Friday, killing Gentry and the pilot.
The crash occurred in a wooded area as the helicopter approached the Flying W Airport in Medford hours before Montgomery Gentry was due to perform at a resort housed at the airport, authorities said.
The band’s website called Gentry’s death „tragic“ and said details of the crash were unknown.
„Troy Gentry’s family wishes to acknowledge all of the kind thoughts and prayers, and asks for privacy at this time, “ the website said.
Gentry, who was 50 years old, was from Kentucky.
Police got a call at about 1 p.m. of a helicopter that was in distress, said Joel Bewley, a spokesman for the Burlington County prosecutor’s office. The helicopter crashed as emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Crews removed Gentry, who was a passenger, from the wreckage, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital, Medford police Chief Richard Meder said.
The crews worked for hours to remove the body of pilot James Evan Robinson from the mangled wreckage. Robinson had been living in Medford but was originally from Meigs, Georgia.
Members of the country duo’s band including the other half of the duo, Eddie Montgomery, were at the airport when the helicopter crashed, Meder said. They were taken to the hospital to see Gentry, he said.
The helicopter had taken off from the Flying W Airport but went into distress and was approaching the airport to land when it crashed, Meder said. The purpose of the helicopter trip wasn’t known.
The National Transportation Safety Board was headed to the crash scene.
Gentry was born in Lexington, Kentucky, where he met Montgomery and they formed an act based off their surnames.
Montgomery Gentry had success on the country charts and country radio in the 2000s, scoring No. 1 hits with „Roll With Me, “ “Back When I Knew It All, “ “Lucky Man, “ “Something to Be Proud Of“ and „If You Ever Stop Loving Me.“ Some of the songs even cracked the Top 40 on the pop charts.
The band mixed country music with Southern rock. It was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2009. It released its debut album, „Tattoos & Scars, “ in 1999.
