North Korea releases photos it claims are of latest missile test

North Korea releases photos it claims are of latest missile test
The North Korean government released on Saturday photos of what it said is the rogue regime’s latest ballistic missile test.
The government said the photos, released to North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), depict an intermediate range Hwasong-12 missile, the same model launched over Japan on Friday and on August 29. The photos cannot be independently verified.
The missile on Friday traveled 2,300 miles as it flew over Japan on Friday before landing in the northern Pacific Ocean. It was the country’s longest-ever test flight of a ballistic missile.
The KCNA said Kim expressed great satisfaction over the launch, which he said verified the „combat efficiency and reliability“ of the missile and the success of efforts to increase its power.
Following Friday’s missile launch, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a statement, „These continued provocations only deepen North Korea’s diplomatic and economic isolation … United Nations Security Council resolutions, including the most recent unanimous sanctions resolution, represent the floor, not the ceiling, of the actions we should take. We call on all nations to take new measures against the Kim regime.“
The launch is the 14th missile test conducted by North Korea in 2017. On September 3, North Korea said it tested a hydrogen bomb, leading to sanctions being passed against the country by the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday.

Wisconsin jury finds girl in Slenderman case not responsible

0

A Wisconsin jury on Friday found that one of two Wisconsin girls accused of stabbing a classmate and friend to please a fictional character named Slenderman was not responsible for her actions during the attack because she was mental ill.
MILWAUKEE (Reuters) – A Wisconsin jury on Friday found that one of two Wisconsin girls accused of stabbing a classmate and friend to please a fictional character named Slenderman was not responsible for her actions during the attack because she was mental ill.
The Waukesha County Circuit Court jury decision sends Anissa Weier, 15, to a state mental hospital, where she will not be able to seek a conditional release until July 2020, local media reported.
Weier and her friend, Morgan Geyser, were charged with attempted first-degree homicide in the May 2014 stabbing of their classmate in Waukesha, a Milwaukee suburb. All three girls were 12 at the time. The stabbing victim, who Reuters has not named, survived the attack.
Weier pled guilty as part of a plea agreement in August to attempted second-degree homicide as a party to a crime with use of a deadly weapon, court records show.
As part of the agreement, the jury was instructed to decide whether Weier’s mental condition would have made her legally responsible for her actions during the attack.
If the 12 jurors found Weier was legally responsible, prosecutors were planning to recommend a sentence of 10 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision, according to the Journal Sentinel.
Geyser is scheduled for trial in October.
After a sleepover with their classmate and friend, Weier and Geyser lured her into the woods and stabbed her 19 times with a kitchen knife, according to a criminal complaint.
The girls told investigators they stabbed her to impress Slenderman, a tall, creepy fictional bogeyman they insisted was real, the complaint said.

Brandon Dawkins scored six touchdowns _ three passing and three rushing _ to lead Arizona to a 63-16 win over UTEP.
Brandon Dawkins scored six touchdowns — three passing and three rushing — to lead Arizona to a 63-16 win over UTEP on Friday night.
Dawkins, who played only one series in the fourth quarter, threw for 155 yards on 18-of-22 passing and ran for 143 yards on 13 carries.
Arizona came into the game as a 25-point favorite, but struggled in the first quarter against winless UTEP before scoring 28 unanswered points.
The Wildcats (2-1) scored on the first play of the second quarter when Dawkins found freshman J. Taylor for 2-yard TD on fourth-and-goal, capping a 12-play, 78-yard drive. Dawkins connected with Shun Brown on a 36-yard touchdown pass followed by a 5-yard Dawkins TD run three minutes later to push the lead to 28-0.
After UTEP (0-3) scored on a pass from Zack Greenlee to Tyler Batson with 2:50 remaining in the half, Dawkins scored his fourth touchdown on a 3-yard run as the Wildcats scored 35 second-quarter points to take a 35-9 lead.
It was the first points allowed by the Wildcats in three quarters after holding Houston scoreless in the second half last week.
Arizona continued its offensive onslaught in the third, scoring two more touchdowns — on Dawkins‘ 13-yard run and Bryce Wolma’s catch.
„It just came down to execution,“ Dawkins said. „We executed a lot better, I executed a lot better and that’s the kind of result you’re going to get.“
UTEP scored its lone second-half touchdown on Mark Torrez’s 6-yard run in the third and Arizona closed with 21 unanswered points.
Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez was impressed with how Dawkins came back from last week’s loss to Houston.
„He showed me that he is the competitor I thought he always was,“ Rodriguez said. „That’s one thing that will not change about Brandon. He is a competitive guy. He played well, he did a nice job and bailed us out a couple of times.“
THE TAKEAWAY
Arizona: How young are the Wildcats? Arizona has played 24 freshman, including 14 true freshman, in the first three games.
UTEP: The Miners, out of Conference USA, began the season with three straight losses for the first time since 2008. UTEP has now lost 13 straight to Arizona.
UP NEXT
Arizona: The Wildcats host Pac-12 South rival Utah next Friday in the conference opener for both teams.

Essential's PH-1 smartphone will now work on Verizon

0

Essential PH-1 owners can now use the smartphone on Verizon’s network without any problems. The device has completed its Verizon certification according to a tweet by Andy Rubin, the Essential CEO.
The Essential PH-1 smartphone was showcased in May by the company founder and CEO, Andy Rubin. The device, which recently began arriving at customers‘ doors, offered a near bezel-less display and the ability to accept accessories via its unique pogo pins as well.
Essential PH-1 was launched as a carrier-exclusive for the Sprint network despite having the capability to work with other networks. Although the smartphone was sold unlocked and should have no problems working with other networks, the lack of Verizon certification meant that issues which arose when using the device on the network would not have been handled by Verizon representatives.
Earlier today, in a tweet sent out by Rubin, he states that the Verizon certification of the Essential PH-1 has been completed and that customers only have to do a device reboot to register the change.
The Essential PH-1 is available for purchase on the Essential website, Amazon, Best Buy, and other retailers for $699.

China rejects letting South Korea, Japan have nuclear arms

0

Wider use of nuclear weapons to counter threat from North Korea will only make the region more unstable, says Chinese ambassador to the US
China’s ambassador to the US has dismissed suggestions that South Korea and Japan should have nuclear weapons to counter the threat posed by North Korea.
Ambassador Cui Tiankai told reporters at an embassy event in Washington that the potential spread of nuclear weapons in the region would not bring security to anybody.
“It could only make things much worse,” said Cui. “We are certainly opposed to the existence of nuclear weapons anywhere on the Korean peninsula … anywhere” Cui said.
The Chinese envoy’s comments on Friday came after the latest North Korean missile test, which flew over the Japanese island of Hokkaido.
North Korean state media said on Saturday the nation’s aims was to seek an “equilibrium” of military force with the United States.
The statement followed an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council where the reclusive nation was once again condemned for its nuclear tests.
North Korea vows to continue nuclear tests despite condemnation from UN Security Council
South Korea’s Defence Minister, Song Young-moo, said at a parliamentary hearing in Seoul last week, that some lawmakers and media were strongly pushing for nuclear weapons to be redeployed on the peninsula, The Washington Post reported.
“The deployment of [US] tactical nuclear weapons is an alternative worth a full review,” Song was quoted as saying.
The weapons could include short-range missiles, artillery shells and other armaments equipped with nuclear warheads. The US had about 100 nuclear-armed weapons deployed in South Korea until 1991.
A spokesman for South Korea’s president, Kim Dong-jo, played down the idea saying “our government’s firm stance on the nuclear-free peninsula remains unchanged”.
South Korea’s ambassador to Washington, Ahn Ho-yong, echoed Seoul’s position.
“That is something which has been discussed by the public, ” Ahn told the South China Morning Post . “But the government has a very firm position – we’re not considering it.”
Cui told reporters on Friday that China understood South Korea’s fears. “We are willing to help them to solve these concerns on the condition of not risking China’s security interests,” he said.
However, Michael Pillsbury, a former US Defence Department official and an expert on China said at a think tank event in Washington last week there should be a review into whether to redeploy US nuclear weapons in South Korea.
“I’m against nuclear weapons for South Korea at the present time, but I’m not totally against it,” Pillsbury said.
The former Japanese defence minister Shigeru Ishiba also questioned whether the nation’s principles of not producing, possessing or deploying nuclear weapons offered a sufficient deterrent to the growing North Korean threat, the Japanese broadcaster TV Asahi reported.
Ishiba argued whether it was “really right to say we’ll be protected by the US nuclear umbrella while not allowing [nuclear weapons] in Japan”.
‘Missile launch, take cover’: Japanese jolted awake by terrifying warning
Yoshihide Suga, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, later said the government “firmly stands by the three non-nuclear principles as a matter of policy”.
“We have not discussed reviewing them thus far and we have no plans to consider it in the future,” Suga was quoted as saying by the news outlet Nikkei.
Abraham Denmark, a former deputy assistant secretary at the US Defence Department, said in a Twitter post that Ishiba’s comment was “not a sign that Japan’s attitude toward nukes has changed”. “This is a reflection of rapidly diminishing confidence in US extended deterrence,” he wrote.

Prezes HMS Bergbau: Silesian Coal to przejrzysty projekt gospodarczy

0

Rozpoczęliśmy go 3,5 roku temu i ciągle wierzymy w szczęśliwe zakończenie. Jestem zdecydowany prowadzić go nadal – mówi Heinz Schernikau, prezes HMS Bergbau. – Główny zarzut kierowany przeciwko nam jest taki, że jesteśmy firmą niemiecką, cz
Chcemy uruchomić nowoczesną kopalnię, stworzyć bezpośrednio 700-1000 miejsc pracy, a pośrednio rozkręcić regionalną przedsiębiorczość.

When Hurricane Irma took out the A/C at a nursing home, the storm's grimmest tragedy soon unfolded

0

Eight people died and 145 patients had to be moved out of the stifling-hot facility, many of them on stretchers or in wheelchairs
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — The first 911 call from the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills didn’t sound ominous: A nursing home patient had an abnormal heartbeat.
An hour later, came a second call: a patient had trouble breathing. Then came the third call. A patient had gone into cardiac arrest — and died.
Over the next few hours of Wednesday morning, the dire situation at the Rehabilitation Center for fragile, elderly people would come into clearer view. Three days after Hurricane Irma hit Florida, the centre still didn’t have air conditioning, and it ultimately became the grimmest tragedy in a state already full of them. Eight people died and 145 patients had to be moved out of the stifling-hot facility, many of them on stretchers or in wheelchairs.
Authorities launched a criminal investigation to figure out what went wrong and who, if anyone, was to blame. Within hours of the tragedy, Gov. Rick Scott and U. S. Sen. Bill Nelson made no effort to hide their anger and frustration that something like this could happen.
Judy Frum, the chief nursing officer at the air conditioned hospital just across the street, was working in the Irma command centre when the emergency room notified her that three patients had been brought in from the nursing home.
“It set off a red flag that something might be going on,” said Frum, who grabbed a colleague and hurried across the street.
When they arrived, paramedics were treating a critically ill patient near the entrance. She saw harried staff members trying to get patients into a room where fans were blowing.
The centre had some electricity, but not enough to power the air conditioning.
Frum called her facility, Memorial Regional Hospital, to issue a mass casualty alert. As many as 100 hospital employees rushed over to help.
“The scene on site when I got there was chaotic,” said Randy Katz, Memorial’s emergency services director.
Word of the crisis soon reached relatives. Vendetta Craig searched frantically for her 87-year-old mother for 25 minutes. She finally found her mother, with doctors from Memorial already applying ice and giving her intravenous fluids.
“She opened her eyes — she looked in my eyes– oh my God, that was the best thing that ever came into my soul,” Craig said.
The Rehabilitation Center said the hurricane knocked out a transformer that powered the air conditioning. The centre said in a detailed timeline of events released Friday that it repeatedly was told by Florida Power and Light that it would fix the transformer, but the utility did not show up until Wednesday morning, hours after the first patients began having emergencies.
She opened her eyes — she looked in my eyes– oh my God, that was the best thing that ever came into my soul
The utility refused to answer any specific questions about the nursing home case.
State and local officials said the nursing home had contacted them, but did not request any help for medical needs or emergencies.
Paulburn Bogle, a member of the housekeeping staff, said employees fought the lack of air conditioning with fans, cold towels, ice and cold drinks for patients.
Rosemary Cooper, a licensed practical nurse at the rehabilitation centre, defended the staff’s work but declined to discuss specifics.
“The people who were working there worked hard to make a good outcome for our patients,” she said in a brief interview before hanging up on a reporter. “We cared for them like family.”
Certified nursing assistant Natasha Johnson, who left the facility weeks ago for another job, said she didn’t understand why the centre didn’t transfer patients to the hospital sooner. “I’m as shocked as you. I just don’t understand it,” she said.
Craig, whose mother was sickened at the nursing home, said the centre’s administrators should “be prosecuted to the full extent that the law allows and then some.”
Owner Jack Michel’s attorney didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
State records showed problems with fire and safety standards, as well as more serious issues with generator maintenance and testing, according to February 2016 reports by Florida Agency for Health Care Administration inspectors.
Inspectors also said they didn’t see a clean, well-supplied facility, noting peeling paint, chipped and scratched doors and floors and furniture in disrepair. There were overflowing trash bins, rusty air conditioning vents, soiled bathtubs and cracked or missing bathroom floor tiles.
The facility’s directors told inspectors that staff needed a refresher course on reporting maintenance and housekeeping issues.
Evangelina Moulder hired an attorney after her 93-year-old mother became severely dehydrated on Wednesday. Moulder’s mother was released from the hospital to a new nursing home.
Moulder’s attorney, Bill Dean, said Moulder visited her mother on Monday and worried about the heat.
“She said, ‘It’s very hot in here,’ and the staff said, ‘Yes, it is,”‘ Dean said. “She opened her mom’s windows, and she said, ‘Mom, it’s going to be OK.”‘

China shouldn't build CPEC road through disputed PoK, says Chinese scholar

0

China should not build a road through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), as it is disputed territory, a leading Chinese scholar said in Pune on Friday.
Pune: China should not build a road through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), as it is disputed territory, a leading Chinese scholar said in Pune on Friday.
Shen Dingli, associate dean at Shanghai-based Fudan University’s Institute of International Studies, was speaking at a session titled ‚Emerging World Order‘ at the ongoing Pune Dialogue on National Security in Pune.
„China should consult with India if it is okay to build a road in ‚PCK (Pakistan-controlled Kashmir)‘. The Chinese should not build the road in the disputed territory because it is under dispute between India and Pakistan. But why does China fail to ask? We should consult together and build it together. Why only consult with Pakistan and not India?“ he said.
Talking about the recent Doka La stand-off, he said Dokalam is a disputed place between China and Bhutan, so China should not build infrastructure there.
India and China should resolve their border issues through „give and take“, Shen said.
Wang Dong, another Chinese scholar, said India and China hold the key to shape the emerging world order.
„If we can effectively manage our differences, we can take steps further,“ he said.
Shaida Mohammad Abdali, Afghanistan’s Ambassador to India, said India has been fighting terrorism for decades, but was not allowed to join in the global anti-terrorism fight earlier, else the situation would have been different.
