Woman, 56, dies in Battle Creek car crash

0

Alcohol appears to be a factor, police said.
BATTLE CREEK, MI — A 56-year-old woman was killed Thursday night in a car crash, Battle Creek Police said.
The crash happened about 9 p.m. Sept. 28 at the intersection of East Columbia Avenue and Riverside Drive in Battle Creek.
Police said upon arrival, officers found two vehicles in the intersection. It appeared an eastbound vehicle on Columbia Avenue struck a vehicle attempting to turn left onto Columbia Avenue from northbound Riverside Drive.
The vehicle traveling on Columbia Avenue was driven by a 32-year-old woman who had no visible injuries.
Police said the vehicle attempting to turn left from Riverside Drive was occupied by a 41-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was airlifted to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo and is in critical condition.
Police said the accident is still under investigation and alcohol appears to be a factor.

What we learned from Elon Musk's speech about Mars, moon base

0

The SpaceX CEO admitted that cost prompted him to scale back the new rocket system’s physical size in favor of a new system known as the BFR.
MELBOURNE, Fla. — Industrial superstar and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took the stage during a conference in Australia early Friday to expand on his vision of humanity as a „multiplanetary species,“ introducing a new, multi-role rocket in the process.
Musk’s speech at the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide built on his presentation last year in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he detailed plans that envisioned a self-sustaining civilization on Mars in the not-too-distant future.
Spearheaded by a massive new rocket system, Musk on Friday admitted that cost was a major concern, prompting him to scale back its physical size — but not his ambitions — in favor of a new system known as the BFR.
During the 2016 IAC conference, Musk introduced the Interplanetary Transport System, a proposed 400-foot-tall rocket and attached vehicle that would take up to 100 people to the red planet. Citing cost concerns, Musk on Friday said SpaceX is seriously working on the development of BFR, a new two-stage rocket with a smaller diameter — 9 meters, or about 30 feet — and a height of nearly 350 feet.
For comparison, the storied Saturn V rocket of the Apollo era stood about 360 feet tall, but SpaceX’s BFR would be more powerful, allowing it to take more to orbit and beyond.
„It’s really quite a big vehicle,“ Musk said. „The booster is lifted by 31 Raptor engines.“
Atop BFR would be a second spacecraft capable of being crewed by up to 100 people or filled with cargo. Much like first stages of the company’s existing Falcon 9 rocket, the BFR would be fully reusable.
Musk said the first iteration could be ready as soon as 2022, which aligns with an Earth-Mars synchronization, or point at which the two planets are closest. The next wouldn’t occur until two years later in 2024.
“I feel fairly confident that we can complete the ship and be ready for launch in about five years,” he said. “If not this timeframe, then soon thereafter.”
Even compared to the previously planned ITS, the BFR is still a massive vehicle — but Musk thinks using it for all of SpaceX’s needs will help reduce costs and eventually transport humans to Mars.
The BFR system, he said, would replace SpaceX’s entire fleet of vehicles and perform tasks ranging from International Space Station resupply to lunar missions to Mars, streamlining production and development for the company. Thanks to its much wider second stage, the spacecraft would be capable of taking larger, heavier payloads to orbit.
„It’ll be capable of doing what Dragon does today in terms of transporting cargo and what Dragon 2 will do in terms of transporting crew and cargo,“ he said. „It can also go much farther than that — for example, the moon.“
The BFR system would play a role in and monetarily bolster SpaceX’s ambitions in four ways: The launching of satellites, trips to the space station under NASA contracts, missions to the moon and, finally, the transportation of people to Mars.
Musk did not mention SpaceX’s plans to build a constellation of thousands of satellites that would beam broadband Internet down to Earth, which could provide a major source of revenue if successful.
Be it ITS or BFR, plans for SpaceX’s eventual vehicle for Mars colonization may have been slightly reduced in size, but long-term dreams are still out in full force.
Ideally, Musk said 2024 would be the year to fly four BFR ships to the red planet: two crewed, two loaded with cargo. This mission would enable the construction of a propellant depot to fuel return trips to Earth, as well as the establishment of a base that could see further expansion.
If the BFR is ready, an earlier uncrewed mission in 2022 would help set the stage for travelers by identifying hazards and delivering some infrastructure.
The colonization of Mars by hundreds and possibly even thousands of people is still very much an objective for Musk, who presented renderings of a slowly growing city on Mars. First, just ships and a few scattered outposts appeared; then, the development of a futuristic settlement primarily powered by solar panels, which meshes well with his experience as CEO of energy company Tesla.
„Over time, terraforming Mars and making it a really nice place to be,“ he said. „I think that’s quite a beautiful picture.“
„It’s 2017,“ a slightly frustrated Musk said during the conference. „I mean, we should have a lunar base by now. What the hell’s going on?
Describing it as „pretty captivating,“ the billionaire CEO described how cargo would be handled on the moon, but didn’t detail many other operations that would happen there, such as the size of the base or what its primary function would be.
The advantages of the BFR’s capacity, however, means propellant production wouldn’t be necessary on the moon, possibly freeing up more energy and time for other activities.
Musk referred to the settlement, which could serve as an effective launching point for trips to Mars, as „Moon Base Alpha.“
Finally, Musk teased a not-so-new idea in the industry — using spacecraft to significantly reduce travel times around the globe.
SpaceX could, for example, transport passengers to any destination on Earth in under an hour using the BFR. Most trips between popular destinations would take fewer than 30 minutes, not counting time spent traveling to and from the rockets.
An animation released by the company shows passengers in New York City taking a boat to an offshore barge topped with a BFR and flying at 17,000 mph before landing vertically in Shanghai 39 minutes later.

Elon Musk's BFR spacecraft set to colonise Mars, fly anywhere on Earth in minutes

0

The SpaceX team gets more ambitious than ever before.
Does Elon Musk’s space exploration ambitions know no bounds? The head of the SpaceX private space flight company took to the stage today at the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide Australia to reveal his latest plans for sending man to Mars – a new spacecraft called the BFR.
What’s BFR stand for? Quite literally, „Big F*cking Rocket“. And the Tesla founder isn’t kidding. The 106 metre-tall rocket could carry payloads 9 metres in diameter, potentially making it a one-stop solution for not only transporting passengers, but large cargo including satellites too.
As with much of SpaceX’s space ambitions, sustainability is a key element, and the BFR will be designed to be a reusable rocket.
Because of that, the lifetime cost of the BFR will be driven down, giving it application that has otherwise eluded historic spacecraft. As well as plans to colonise Mars and build a moonbase via travelling with the BFR, Musk envisions the rocket carrying out journeys to destinations on Earth. Passengers could fly to most countries on Earth within 30 minutes, and anywhere on the planet definitively within an hour.
Set to „cannibalise“ the progress made with previous SpaceX rockets, Musk said the BFR would eventually carry out all the work the others had been designed for.
“If we can do that then all the resources that are used for Falcon9, Dragon and Heavy can by applied to this system,” he said.
The team aims to have the BFR built and ready for launch within five years, setting itself a 2022 target. If successful, SpaceX aims to send a four-ship mission to Mars in 2024, with each craft holding roughly 100 people in 40 cabins.
The aim would then be to build a plant on the surface of Mars that could synthesise fuel to send the BFR back to Earth for further missions.

China says one step forward, two steps back no good for Japan ties

China’s foreign minister on Thursday said that ties with Japan should not take two steps back for every step forward, after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a rare appearance at an anniversary event for the normalization of diplomatic relations.
BEIJING: China’s foreign minister on Thursday said that ties with Japan should not take two steps back for every step forward, after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a rare appearance at an anniversary event for the normalization of diplomatic relations.
Speaking on the eve of the 45th anniversary of the resumption of ties between Beijing and Tokyo, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Japan’s ambassador to China, Yutaka Yokoi, that he hoped for greater improvement in relations.
„We hope that the Japanese government can pursue a more positive policy towards China… and not take one step back for each step forward, even two steps back for each step forward,“ Wang said, according to a statement released on the ministry website on Friday.
Relations have been complicated for decades by the legacy of Japan’s wartime aggression, as well as by a festering territorial dispute in the East China Sea.
Abe on Thursday evening made an appearance at a Chinese embassy event in Tokyo that jointly celebrated the anniversary as well as China’s Oct 1 National Day.
Wang called the appearance „good news“ and added: „We hope for more good news in China-Japan relations and not for bad news to follow shortly after good news.“
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Abe also exchanged congratulatory messages on Friday, in which Li said that the two countries should „properly manage and control their contradictions and differences“, China’s official Xinhua news agency reported.
Japan’s cabinet on Thursday announced Oct. 22 as the date of a snap election where Abe, a conservative who returned to power in 2012, hopes a recent boost in voter support will help his Liberal Democratic Party-led coalition maintain a simple majority. It now holds a two-thirds “super” majority.

The best Sky TV packages, deals and Sky Q offers in September 2017

0

Sky TV packages come in all shapes and sizes; let us find the best bundle deal for you.
Every week we take a look at the latest Sky TV packages, deals and special offers to make sure that you’re getting the very best prices when you decide to sign up! So if you’re trying to decide which Sky TV offer is for you, what a Sky Q box is and if you can afford it or even if you should be getting one in the first place – you’re in the right place!
As you scroll down the page, we’ll discuss the latest Sky TV packages, offers and any special deals and walk you through the larger bundles with the optional extras like Sky Cinema and Sky Sports.
As things stand today, you’ll first need to select one of the top three Sky TV packages below then add additional channel bundles via the options on Sky’s website if you want sports etc. There’s no bespoke Sky Sports package by default at the moment, but you can add it after selecting the initial bundle, by just scrolling down and looking for the Sky Sports offers to bolt-on.
Yes! Actually, all of these Sky TV packages include a Sky Q box by default if you’re signing up as a new customer. When choosing your Sky TV package from the list of offers below, you’ll be presented with two Sky Q deals to choose from.
The default Sky Q box is the 1TB option with a one-off £20 setup cost. Opt for the 2TB Sky Q box though and that setup cost rises to a rather steep £199. That’s pretty harsh to be honest, although the monthly prices don’t change, so it is just the one-off cost to consider.
Alternatively, you can get the 2TB Sky Q box for £65 instead if you add Sky Q Multiscreen to your bundle for £12 a month. We’d get your channels sorted first, then maybe scroll back up to the Sky Q offers‘ section once you have a better idea of the overall cost, which is handily updated throughout at the top of the screen.
In addition to double the storage (that’s up to 1000 hours in standard definition) of the standard Sky Q box, the 2TB Sky Q deal comes with a few extra benefits. Such as being able to record six shows at once instead of three, while watching a seventh. You also get the fancier Sky Q Touch remote control, an extra tablet allowance, and the all-important party piece – you can enjoy select channels in Ultra HD. Which is great if you’ve recently taken advantage of a cheap 4K TV deal.
When you click through to any of the bundles above, you’ll be offered multiple extras to add to your Sky package as you go. Everything from bigger Sky Q boxes, Sky Sports subscriptions, Sky Cinema, broadband and so on.
Note: If you’re clicking through to Sky from the Bolt-on sections below, rather than the contracts above, it may appear that the new cheaper rates aren’t available for the main contract, but click the package you want and you should see the discounted rate at the top of the page and at checkout.
With these Sky Sports bundles you get the following Sky Sports channels: Sky Sports Premier league, Sky Sports Football, Sky Sports F1, Sky Sports Cricket, Sky Sports Golf, Sky Sports Action, Sky Sports Arena and Sky Sports Main Event (for the world’s biggest sporting events).
You can get slightly cheaper options if you opt for fewer sports channels (getting just Sky Sports is £18 a month), or commit to an 18-month signup for the same package. Before checkout, you can also add a HD upgrade for the Sports channels for £6 a month.
To find the ’no contract‘ £27.50 a month offer, when presented with the two options, select ‚Choose your sports channels‘ on the left then scroll down to the ‚Complete Sports Pack.‘ Or, if you’re happy to have all the Sky Sports channels for 18 months, just choose the £20 a month option on the right.
There are two Unlimited options (again, speeds depend on your postcode). We were offered prices from £23.99 per month for the slower tier and deals for the faster speeds started at £30.99 per month. As things stand, prices are discounted for the first 12 months, with a modest bump for the remaining six.
Game of Thrones season 7 has just finished, but Sky are about to start broadcasting the entire series from the start. So you’ll be able to tell your Sky Q box to record the lot for you.
With all packages you get at least the standard free to air HD channels. To be honest you also get a fair few of these with standard Freeview HD.
You’ll need to splash out on the £38 a month ‚Box Sets bundle‘ in order to get the flashier HD channels. Once you do though, you’ll get access to the following channels as well:

Japan's FSA gives official endorsement to 11 cryptocurrency exchanges

Japan’s Financial Services Agency said on Friday it has approved 11 companies as operators of cryptocurrency exchanges, in a move that sets the country apart from its neighbors which are tightening their grip on virtual money.
TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s Financial Services Agency said on Friday it has approved 11 companies as operators of cryptocurrency exchanges, in a move that sets the country apart from its neighbors which are tightening their grip on virtual money.
The Japanese government recognized bitcoin as legal tender in April and required cryptocurrency exchange operators to register with it.
The move was aimed at avoiding a repeat of the failure in 2014 of Tokyo-based Mt Gox, the world’s largest bitcoin exchange at the time.
The financial watchdog has laid out various requirements, such as building a strong computer system, segregation of customer accounts and checking the identity of customers, a key issue given concerns cryptocurrency could be used for money-laundering.
Trading in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies among Japanese investors has gained momentum this year, helped by the legal recognition as well as spectacular surges in the price of bitcoin and ethereum.
Industry officials say Japan is now one of the world’s biggest bitcoin trading hubs as China — by far the largest user of bitcoins until early this year — clamps down on cryptocurrencies.
With the new regulation, Tokyo aims to balance the need to protect investors with the need to support fintech innovations, FSA officials said.
Officials this month said they have no plan to ban initial coin offerings (ICOs), although there have been few launches of token-based digital currencies in Japan to date.
Tokyo’s stance is in contrast with those of other regulators in Asia.
Beijing this month ordered some bitcoin exchanges to shut. [L8N1M72UR]
And earlier on Friday, South Korea’s financial regulator said it will ban raising money through all forms of virtual currencies.
The FSA is still reviewing registration applications from 17 other exchange operators.
On the other hand, 12 firms that had been in the business before the new regulation decided to close down, the FSA said.
