Donald Trump to call for more pressure on N Korea in first UN speech

0

The US president will also criticise Venezuela, Iran and Islamist militants, officials say.
US President Donald Trump is expected to call for more international pressure on North Korea over its nuclear weapons programme when he addresses the United Nations General Assembly later.
It will be his first speech to the world body and will take place at 10:30 New York time (14:30 GMT).
White House officials said he would refer to Islamist militants as „losers“ and criticise Iran and Venezuela.
Mr Trump has previously hinted that the US might cut its UN funding.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has told the BBC that if the US withdraws from international affairs the void left will be filled by others.
Officials said Mr Trump would tell UN member states to act against North Korea’s „destabilising, hostile and dangerous behaviour“.
North Korea’s said on Monday that more sanctions and pressure would only make it accelerate its nuclear programme.
The country has carried out repeated missile tests this year despite international condemnation, and conducted its sixth nuclear test earlier this month.
Mr Trump will also express concern about Iran in his speech. Last week he said the country had „violated the spirit of“ a 2015 deal aimed to stop it developing a nuclear weapon. The US president has been a frequent critic of the agreement.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in London last week that Iran was not contributing positively to regional security „through their actions to prop up the Assad regime [in Syria]“, by engaging in „malicious activities in the region“ and by „aggressively developing ballistic missiles“.
A White House official briefing reporters on Mr Trump’s speech said that Iran and North Korea presented a „shared menace“ to the world.
„Nations cannot be bystanders to history and if we don’t confront the threats now, they will only gather force and become more formidable,“ the official was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.
Mr Trump was at the UN on Monday and held meetings with some world leaders, in addition to attending a special meeting on UN reform.
UN not reaching its potential, Trump says
He told the leaders of some Latin American countries that the situation in Venezuela was „totally unacceptable“, calling it a socialist dictatorship.
He said the US was „prepared to take further action if the government of Venezuela persists“.

Under fire over Rohingya, Suu Kyi defends actions

0

The Nobel Peace laureate’s global image has been damaged by violence since Rohingya insurgents attacked Myanmar forces
Naypyitaw, Myanmar — With a mass exodus of Rohingya Muslims sparking accusations of ethnic cleansing from the United Nations and others, Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Tuesday said her country does not fear international scrutiny and invited diplomats to see some areas for themselves.
Though an estimated 421,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh in less than a month as their villages burned and hundreds were killed, Suu Kyi said the “great majority” of Muslims within the conflict zone stayed and that “more than 50 percent of their villages were intact.”
The Nobel Peace laureate’s global image has been damaged by violence since Rohingya insurgents attacked Myanmar security forces on Aug. 25. Rohingya fled their villages in the military crackdown that followed, and many of their villages have been burned. The government has blamed the Rohingya themselves, but members of the persecuted minority have said soldiers and Buddhist mobs attacked them.
Suui Kyi’s first address to the nation since the violence erupted came days after she canceled plans to attend the U. N. General Assembly, a decision widely seen as a response to international criticism.
Suu Kyi said anyone found to have broken the law would be punished. “Human rights violations and all other acts that impair stability and harmony and undermine the rule of law will be addressed in accordance with strict laws and justice,” she said.
The Rohingya, who live mainly in northern Rakhine state near the Bangladesh border, have had a long and troubled history in this predominantly Buddhist nation of 60 million.
Though members of the long-persecuted religious minority first arrived in the western state of Rakhine generations ago, most people in Myanmar consider them to have migrated illegally from Bangladesh. Denied citizenship, they are effectively stateless. They cannot travel freely, practice their religion, or work as teachers or doctors, and they have little access to medical care, food or education.
The attacks on Rohingya villages in the last month appear to many to have been a systematic effort to drive them out. U. N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres has described it as ethnic cleansing.
Suu Kyi sought to assure foreign diplomats gathered for her speech in Naypyitaw, the capital, that those who fled to Bangladesh would be allowed to return if they passed a “verification” process. She also said the government was working to restore normalcy in the area.
Though fires have continued to flare in recent days in northern Rakhine state, she said “there have been no armed clashes and there have been no clearance operations” for the past two weeks.
“Nevertheless we are concerned to hear that numbers of Muslims are fleeing across the border to Bangladesh,” she said. “We want to understand why this exodus is happening. We would like to talk to those who have fled as well as those who have stayed.”
She said she it would be helpful to understand why conflict did not break out everywhere. She invited the diplomats with visit villages that weren’t affected so they could learn along with the government “why are they not at each other’s throats in these particular areas.”
Rohingya now in camps in Bangladesh were angered by the implication that Rohingya who were driven from their villages were themselves responsible, or that some members of the ethnic group are safe.
In the Kutupalong refugee camp, Abdul Hafiz said Rohingya once trusted Suu Kyi more than the military that not only ruled for half a century before, but also held her under house arrest for many years. Now Hafiz calls Suu Kyi a “liar” and says Rohingya are suffering more than ever.
He said Suu Kyi should give international journalists more access to their destroyed villages. If Rohingya are proven wrong that they were attacked, he said, “we will not mind if the world decides to kill us all by pushing us into the sea.”
Chris Lewa, founder of the Arakan Project, said the government rules for verifying Rohingya as citizens are too strict, requiring documents dating back decades. “Many people would have lost their documents in the fires, and many children were already unregistered,” she said.
Those fires, she added, have destroyed thousands of homes. “So where are they going to go?” I hope not in segregated camps, as in Sittwe,” a Rakhine state city where tens of thousands of Rohingya have been confined since another round of ethnic violence five years ago.
Some observers who attended the speech said it was progress for Suu Kyi to invite diplomats to at least some Rohingya villages.
“Today’s welcoming of the international community to travel to Rakhine and see for ourselves what the situation is, I think that is a positive statement,” said Andrew Kirkwood of the United Nations’ Office for Project Services.
W. Patrick Murphy, U. S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southeast Asia, left the event without commenting.
Russian and Chinese diplomats praised the speech. “The message is quite clear that Myanmar is ready to cooperate with the international community,” said the Russian ambassador to Myanmar, Dr. Nikolay Listopadov.
Rights groups were far more critical. Amnesty International regional director James Gomez accused Suu Kyi of “a mix of untruths and victim-blaming.”
“There is overwhelming evidence that security forces are engaged in a campaign of ethnic cleansing,” Gomez said. “While it was positive to hear Aung San Suu Kyi condemn human rights violations in Rakhine state, she is still silent about the role of the security forces in this.”
The exodus continues to grow. The U. N.’s migration agency on Tuesday raised its estimate of the number of refugees in Bangladesh to 421,000, and UNICEF says more than a quarter-million of those are children. Hundreds of thousands more Rohingya were already in Bangladesh from waves of violence years earlier.
Spokesman Joel Millman of the International Organization for Migration says an estimated 20,000 people are flowing across Myanmar’s border into Bangladesh every day.

iPhone 8, iPhone X vs Android flagships: Speed tests say it's not even close

0

Apple’s new A11 Bionic chip is by far the highest-performing system on the market.
Apple’s A11 Bionic system on chip (SoC) makes the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X by far the highest-performing smartphones available today, according to Geekbench results.
As Apple boasted when unveiling its 64-bit, six-core A11 Bionic, the new SoC would blow away the performance of the A10, which powers the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
That claim has now been confirmed in official results for the A11’s performance on Primate Labs‘ Geekbench iOS benchmarks, which were updated today with official measurements for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, which were probably submitted by reviewers.
There’s a minor difference in single-core and multicore performance between the three new iPhones, but all three have a massive lead over top-performing Android phones, which are led by Samsung’s Galaxy S8 with either its own Exynos octa-core chip or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, and Huawei’s Honor V9 with its HiSilicon Kirin 960.
The iOS single-core benchmark shows that the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus, have scores between 4,204 and 4,181.
The iPhone 8 Plus leads on the multicore benchmark with a score of 10,078, followed closely by the iPhone 8 and iPhone X with scores of 10,065 and 9,955, respectively.
As noted by Apple Insider, a fair comparison is between the A10-powered iPhone 7 and A-11 powered iPhone 8, which share similar specs besides the chip.
The results indicate that the A11 is about 25 percent faster on the single-core test and 80 percent faster in a multicore comparison. And these benchmarks don’t even account for the iPhone 8’s new Apple-designed GPU, which Apple suggests gives the new iPhone a 30-percent performance lead in graphics over the A10’s GPU.
Android benchmarks meanwhile top out at 1965 on a measure of single-core performance, while multicore scores don’t exceed 6,494. The Galaxy S8 with Samsung’s Exynos 8895 octa-core chip lead on both measures.
On single-core performance, the lowly iPhone SE with an A9 chip outranks Samsung’s Galaxy S8 on Geekbench.
While Apple has carved out a long lead in performance with its chips, Samsung has focused on display technologies, such as the OLED screens in the Galaxy S8 and Note 8.
Screen benchmarking firm DisplayMate gave both devices an A+ in its tests, and recently found the Note 8’s display to be the brightest on the market .
iPhone X vs Samsung Galaxy Note 8: Which has better business specs?
The specifications for the new iPhones and Samsung’s latest Galaxy devices are now official. Based on those specs, how do these phones compare for business buyers?
10 best smartphones: Samsung Galaxy Note 8 still trumps Apple iPhone X
Apple recently announced the new 2017 iPhone lineup, but even its best can’t surpass Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note.

Toys ‘R’ Us files for bankruptcy protection

Toys ‚R‘ Us is filing for bankruptcy protection. The toy retailer has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, it said in a statement on Monday.
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL – JANUARY 10: Beyond a shopping cart, a liquidator arranges stock in a Toys R Us store January 10,2006 in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Toys ‘R’ Us is filing for bankruptcy protection.
The toy retailer has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, it said in a statement on Monday. Meanwhile, it said its Canadian subsidiary will “seek protection in parallel proceedings” in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
The company said it will use the proceedings to restructure its $5 billion outstanding debt.
Despite the bankruptcy filing, Toys ‘R’ Us said its 1,600 stores worldwide continue to operate. The filing will not include around 255 Toys ‘R’ Us stores outside the U. S. and Canada.
The New Jersey-based retailer has nearly 65,000 employees globally.
Toys ‘R’ Us, like the rest of the retail industry, has been hurt by the dominance of Amazon as people increasingly buy toys online. The company was acquired for $6.6 billion in 2005 by a group that included affiliates of private equity firms KKR and Bain Capital, as well as the real estate investment trust Vornado.
But it has continued to struggle since then. Toys ‘R’ Us reported a more than 4% drop in same-store sales in the first quarter and a net loss of $164 million, up from $126 million in the previous year. The company will report its second quarter results on Sept. 26.

The Pi wireless charger can charge five phones from a foot away

0

The new Pi wireless charger is capable of charging multiple devices at a distance.
With the release of wireless charging on the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, we’re confident you’re about to see a lot more wireless charging technology pop up.
One of the frustrating things about wireless charging at the moment is that you need to have your device, whether that’s your phone or your Apple Watch, sat directly on top of the charging pad in order for it to work.
Pi, a company founded out of MIT, has created a wireless charger that is capable of charging multiple devices up to a foot away. The Pi Charger uses resonant induction, the same technique that Qi chargers (the industry standard) use, but can reach greater distances thanks to an algorithm.
The beam-forming algorithm allows the Pi charger to identify where a device is, and emit a magnetic field to it. When speaking to TechCrunch, Pi co-founder John Macdonald, said this kind of algorithm has in the past required vast processing power, but his fellow co-founder Lixin Shi “came up with these matrices that could prove that you could get to an optimal solution in just two clock cycles on a simple microcontroller.”
And the technology seems to work. The company demonstrated charging four phones and one tablet simultaneously on stage during TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco, an event showcasing game-changing and ‘disruptive’ technologies.
At present, in order for a device to be charged using the Pi charger, it needs to sit inside a special case, although Pi claims that future phones like the iPhone 8 won’t need a case in order to be charged by it.
It’s interesting that the iPhone 8 was directly name-checked, as obviously the Pi Charger will be in direct competition with Apple’s recently announced multi-device charging pad, AirPower .
The speed of charging is also worth noting; if your device is directly next to the Pi charger it’ll charge at “full speed“ while „the further the device is from the Pi, the slower it is.”
Pi plans to start shipping the Pi in 2018, and is planning for it to be “well under $200” (£148, AU$250). As we hear more about the Pi charger, we’ll let you know.
