Your Bitcoin Isn't Any Good on Steam Anymore

Valve’s Steam, the digital distribution platform which enjoys near-monopolistic control of the entire PC gaming industry, has stopped accepting bitcoins as a form of payment due to the currency’s volatility and increasingly unacceptable processing fees.
Valve’s Steam, the digital distribution platform which enjoys near-monopolistic control of the entire PC gaming industry, has stopped accepting bitcoins as a form of payment due to the currency’s volatility and increasingly unacceptable processing fees.
In a blog post on Wednesday, Steam wrote that “In the past few months we’ve seen an increase in the volatility in the value of Bitcoin and a significant increase in the fees to process transactions on the Bitcoin network.”
The reason for this is inherent to the way the Bitcoin protocol works; the number of bitcoins is controlled by having computers generate them via so-called “mining” operations, which are essentially complicated math problems. That stalls growth in the number of bitcoins that exist, but as the value of those bitcoins has skyrocketed miners are devoting more and more computational resources to compete for new coins, requiring huge amounts of electricity and time. The speculative frenzy has at times created massive lag in the already inherently limited speed of transactions across the Bitcoin network and jacked up processing fees.
The result is that at the same time Bitcoin needs widespread adoption to break beyond being a purely speculative investment, it’s becoming very difficult and frustrating for retailers to use. According to Valve, transaction fees have exploded from their original cost of 20 cents to roughly $20, a 100x increase, over the course of the past year. And since those transactions are often lagging at the same time the value of bitcoin is rapidly fluctuating, it’s caused real problems:
There’s no good customer service response to this problem, Valve added, because if there’s an imbalance in payments the same problem can repeat itself, and users can be hit with additional transaction fees.
“At this point, it has become untenable to support Bitcoin as a payment option,” Valve concluded. “We may re-evaluate whether Bitcoin makes sense for us and for the Steam community at a later date.”
Bitcoin itself recently shot past $14,000 this week, meaning that if Valve is sitting on a horde of the digital currency, it’s probably making serious bank. But Valve is in the video game distribution business, not the cryptocurrency speculation business. What’s more, it was one of the few major retailers that accepted bitcoins at all. Steam’s retraction from the market is another blow to Bitcoin’s already low utility beyond speculative investing, hoarding, and of course various fraud schemes and scams.
As the bubble grows, Bitcoin is facing regulatory troubles as well. Numerous countries including China, South Korea, and Russia have all clamped down on the cryptocurrency sector. In the U. S., the Securities and Exchange Commission has signaled increasing skepticism of crypto in general, while the Internal Revenue Service is preparing a major crackdown on people using it to evade taxes.

Man killed in Gentilly Subway shooting: NOPD

0

Investigators converged on a Subway restaurant at Caton Street, near Dillard University.
A man died after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest Wednesday night (Dec. 6), in the 2100 block of Caton Street in Gentilly, New Orleans police said. Investigators converged on a Subway restaurant at the corner of Caton and Touro streets.
About 7:15 p.m., responding officers found the victim lying on the sidewalk. He was taken by EMS to a local hospital, where he later died, according to police.
By about 7:45 p.m. police had closed off the intersection of Caton and Touro streets to traffic and surrounded the Subway. Investigators placed several lime-green evidence cones on the sidewalk just outside the front of the restaurant.
The area, which sits near Dillard University and is lined with businesses, including several strip malls, was largely void of onlookers Wednesday night. A light drizzle persisted as investigators documented the scene.
Though the Subway’s lights remained on and a neon „open“ sign glowed in the front window, the restaurant appeared empty. According to Subway.com, the Subway at 2103 Caton Street usually remains open until 9 p.m. Wednesdays.
NOPD Homicide Detective Thaddeus Williams is in charge of the ongoing investigation and can be reached at 504-658-5300 with any information on the shooting. Those with information may also submit tips anonymously to Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
No further information was immediately available.

Florida man, 20, reportedly behind massive hack at Uber

0

An unidentified man was paid $100,000 to delete the data through a bug bounty program, Reuters reports.
Uber hasn’t identified the hacker it paid $100,000 to last year, but Reuters reports its a 20-year-old man in Florida.
A 20-year-old Florida man was responsible for a massive data breach at Uber last year, although his identity couldn’t be established, Reuters reported Wednesday.
Uber said it paid $100,000 to the data thieves at the time to delete the information. But the company did not reveal any details about the hacker or how it paid him the money.
Sources familiar with the hack told Reuters the payment was made through a program designed to reward bug hunters who report flaws in a company’s software. Uber’s bug bounty service is hosted by HackerOne, a company that connects security researchers with companies.
While three sources familiar with the hack told Reuters a Florida man was responsible, the news agency said it was unable to identify the man.
Uber may also have broken a promise made in a Federal Trade Commission settlement not to mislead users about data privacy and security.
Uber declined to comment, while HackerOne representatives didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
CNET’s Dara Kerr and Laura Hautala contributed to this report.

Haley: Trump isn't deciding who controls East Jerusalem

0

Nikki Haley, the United States ambassador to the U. N., said Wednesday that the United States is not taking sides in the dispute over East Jerusalem.
Nikki Haley, the United States ambassador to the U. N., said Wednesday that the United States is not taking sides in the dispute over East Jerusalem despite President Trump’s decision to move the U. S. embassy and recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city.
Haley noted that Trump’s announcement did not mention East Jerusalem and said it will be up to Israelis and Palestinians during peace negotiations to decide the fate of the contested parts of the city.
“We don’t want to pick a side on this,” she added.
The U. N. voted last year to condemn Israel’s settlement building in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
East Jerusalem, which was captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-day War, was not part of the original lines drawn for Israel in 1949. Many view this part of the city as occupied territory and Palestinians hope for it to be the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Trump in his Wednesday announcement said he would put plans in motion to move the U. S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, but also signed a six-month waiver delaying the move.
Critics argue the president’s action could spark unrest in the region.

ASX chooses blockchain for CHESS replacement system

0

After more than two years of experimenting, the Australian Securities Exchange has announced that it will be employing Digital Asset to deliver its clearing and equity settlement system.
The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) has announced that US-based blockchain firm Digital Asset will be responsible for replacing its Clearing House Electronic Subregister System (CHESS) with a distributed ledger solution.
The CHESS system is used by the ASX to record shareholdings and manage the clearing and settlement of equity transactions publicly listed in Australia.
It dates back to the 1990s and is currently still in use by the exchange.
In a statement, the ASX said the decision to choose Digital Asset follows the successful build of enterprise-grade distributed ledger technology (DLT) software for core equity clearing and settlement functions, as well as the completion of testing over the past two years by both parties.
The testing included two independent third-party security reviews of Digital Asset’s technology, the ASX said.
„The testing confirms ASX’s confidence in the functional, capacity, security, and resilience capabilities of [Digital Asset’s] application of DLT to meet the needs of Australia’s financial marketplace and maintain the highest regulatory and operational standards,“ the statement explains.
While delivering its 2017 financial results in August, the exchange said its new post-trade solution to replace the CHESS platform was still undergoing testing, with the software on track for assessment in December by a third party.
It also expected to announce the vendor responsible for the platform by March 2018, when it was going to determine if the blockchain was the right solution.
The ASX announced in June 2016 that it was building a new post-trade solution using blockchain technology, asking for market feedback. This followed the ASX enlisting Digital Asset at the start of last year to help it develop blockchain solutions for the equity market.
The organisation has been planning to replace or upgrade its trading and post-trade platforms for over two years, announcing in September 2016 that it had a complete prototype and was moving to build an „industrial-strength solution“ to use as its equity settlement and clearing platform.
The ASX said previously that the new CHESS trading platform will provide 24-hour OTC clearing and OTC client clearing enhancements that it expects will provide „contemporary“ technology and additional functionality.
Over the past year, the ASX conducted industry-wide consultation, including quarterly webinars with over 150 participants; performed demonstrations of the blockchain-based technology to 110 companies from global finance companies; held a series of engagement workshops; and arranged six business committee meetings to prepare the DLT solution.
On Thursday, the ASX said it will now work with stakeholders on finalising the scope of Day 1 functionality for the new system. Day 1 functionality and the proposed timing for transition are expected to be released for market feedback at the end of March 2018.
„Having completed this work, we believe that using DLT to replace CHESS will enable our customers to develop new services and reduce their costs, and it will put Australia at the forefront of innovation in financial markets,“ ASX MD and CEO Dominic Stevens said.
„While we have a lot more work still to do, today’s announcement is a major milestone on that journey.“

NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon accused of sexual harassment

NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon has been accused of sexual harassment and battery in a lawsuit filed by a former female assistant for his sports…
NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon has been accused of sexual harassment and battery in a lawsuit filed by a former female assistant for his sports marketing firm.
In the lawsuit filed Monday in Orange County, Calif., the woman, Wendy Haskell, alleges Moon required her to sleep in the same bed as him on business trips and to wear “skimpy thong lingerie bottoms,” according to the Seattle Times .
The lawsuit also accuses Moon of grabbing Haskell’s crotch while on a trip in Seattle this year, as well as drugging her and pulling off her bathing suit on a separate occasion in Mexico in October.
Haskell, who was hired in July as Moon’s executive assistant for his company, Sports 1 Marketing, says she was demoted from that position three months later after voicing complaints about Moon’s sexual misconduct. A publicist for the company, which Moon co-founded in 2010, did not return requests for comment to the Seattle Times.
Moon, 61, was involved in a handful of controversies during his NFL playing days with the Houston Oilers (now the Titans), where he starred as quarterback from 1984-93, and with the Vikings, Seahawks and Chiefs before retiring in 2000.
First, a Vikings cheerleader accused Moon of sexual harassment while he played for the team in 1995. Her suit, which alleged Moon offered a financial reward for sex, was settled out of court soon after.
Just two months later, Moon’s then-wife, Felicia, called the police on him after she said he slapped and choked her in their Houston home. After Moon was arrested, he called his reaction to their argument a “tremendous mistake.” Though his wife never ended up pressing charges, he was charged with assault but acquitted by the jury after Felicia claimed she started the fight. The couple has been divorced since 2001.
While Haskell, 32, declined to comment on the pending lawsuit, her attorney, Diana Fitzgerald, said Haskell never went to the police with her accusations against Moon because she “was scared” and seeking to “further her career in the sports marketing industry.”
When Haskell first complained to Moon about his business trip demands, he said her job depended on her compliance and his assistant before her had “accepted the same arrangement,” according to the lawsuit.
In addition to his role as president of Sports 1 Marketing, Moon serves as a color commentator on the Seahawks radio network. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.
