YouTube to hire 10,000 new staff for content curation

0

YouTube will hire 10,000 new people to monitor and remove unsuitable content
YouTube will hire 10,000 people to monitor and control violent extremism on the popular video streaming platform, along with curbing content that endangers children. In an interview to The Daily Telegraph, Susan Wojcicki, Chief Executive of the Google-owned video-sharing site, said on Monday that “bad actors are exploiting” YouTube to “mislead, manipulate, harass or even harm”.
“We will continue the growth of our teams, with the goal of bringing the total number of people across Google working to address content that might violate our policies to over 10,000 in 2018,” Wojcicki was quoted as saying.
YouTube along with Facebook, Google and Twitter have come under scrutiny over the availability of terrorist material and propaganda on their platforms. British Prime Minister Theresa May has also asked social media platforms to remove terror content after a series of terror-related attacks this year in the country.
“The tech companies have made significant progress on this issue, but we need to go further and faster to reduce the time it takes to reduce terrorist content online,” May said in October.
YouTube last month announced it will remove content on the platform that attempts to pass as being “friendly for kids”.
“While some of these videos may be suitable for adults, others are completely unacceptable, so we are working to remove them from YouTube,” Johanna Wright, Vice President of Product Management, YouTube, wrote in a blog post.
The Google-owned company will apply machine learning technology and automated tools in order to discover potentially exploitive content. YouTube has terminated 50 channels and removed thousands of videos as also advertisements from 5,00,000 exploitive videos under the current set of guidelines. The company will also continue to work with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to report potentially illegal behaviour to law enforcement, said Wright.
Meanwhile, YouTube Kids has announced new measures for parents if they find children watching inappropriate videos at home even by mistake. With over 800 million learning video views per day, YouTube Kids is now live in 37 countries.

Google to block YouTube on Amazon devices

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google is pulling its popular YouTube video service from Amazon’s Fire TV and Echo Show devices in an escalating feud that has caught consumers in the crossfire.
The decision to block YouTube is retaliation for Amazon’s refusal to sell some Google products that compete with Amazon gadgets. That includes Google’s Chromecast streaming device, an alternative to Fire TV, and an internet-connected speaker called Home, which is trying to catch up to Amazon’s market-leading Echo. Amazon’s high-end Echo Show has a screen that can display video.
“Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and Fire TV,” Google said in a Tuesday statement.
Amazon didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Google is hoping to pressure Amazon into selling Google’s products by taking away access to the world’s most widely watched video service. Unless a truce is reached, YouTube will stop working on Fire TV on Jan. 1. YouTube was supposed to disappear from the Echo Show Tuesday, although Amazon has previously found ways to make unauthorized versions of YouTube available on that device.
The dispute between Amazon and Google mirrors the face-offs that occasionally crop up between pay-TV providers and TV networks when it comes time to re-negotiate their deals.
But in this instance, the two tech heavyweights aren’t fighting over licensing fees. Instead, they are jockeying to position their gadgets and, by extension, their digital services into homes as internet-connected appliances and devices become more deeply ingrained in people’s lives.
The battle also highlights the power that the world’s major technology companies are gaining as they dominate important corners of commerce and communications. As the world’s largest online retailer, Amazon has tremendous sway over what people buy, while the results delivered by Google’s ubiquitous search engine often help determine what people do on and off the web.
Besides withholding Chromecast and the Home speaker from its store, Amazon also has rankled Google by declining to sell an internet-connected thermostat made by Nest, which is owned by Google parent Alphabet Inc. Amazon also doesn’t allow its Prime video streaming service on Chromecast, an omission that Google wants to change.

Man challenges death sentence after actual killer given life

COLUMBUS (AP) — Lawyers for a condemned Ohio killer say it’s “patently unfair” that he received the death sentence for killing a friend during a burglary when his accomplice, who delivered the fatal knife wounds, received a life sentence.
The attorneys for death row inmate Austin Myers also argued Tuesday before the Ohio Supreme Court that he should be spared because of his relative youth — he was 19 — at the time of the crime. A decision is weeks away.
Myers, now 22, was sentenced to die for the Jan. 28,2014 killing in southwestern Ohio of childhood friend Justin Back, who was about to enter the Navy.
Back was killed as part of a burglary masterminded by Myers as a way to steal a safe and a gun, according to records filed with the high court. The plan was always to kill Back, the records say.
Myers’ sentence should be reduced to life without parole because the death penalty is disproportionate given the life sentence that co-defendant Tim Mosley received after agreeing to plead guilty and testify against Myers, according to a May 2016 filing with the court by Myers’ attorneys, Timothy McKenna and Roger Kirk.
“If the main offender gets life without parole, and the accomplice gets death, it is patently unfair,” they argued.
They say if anyone received a death sentence it should have been Mosley, who repeatedly stabbed the victim with a pocketknife.
Myers’ youth at the time should also be given more weight, since the U. S. Supreme Court has banned executing people for crimes committed under the age of 18, his attorneys said.
Prosecutors say the court can’t weigh proportion in the case because no factors for or against a death sentence were presented in Mosley’s case, since he pleaded guilty.
They also say there’s overwhelming evidence of Myers’ role in planning and carrying out the killing. Myers readjusted a garrote around Back’s neck when it wasn’t secure, told the victim “it’s almost over,” then held Back while Mosley stabbed him, prosecutors said in a September 2016 filing.
“Neither Myers nor Mosley was an ‘accomplice,’” said Kathryn Horvath, an assistant Warren County prosecutor, in the filing. “They were both culpable in preparing for, calculating, and executing Back’s murder.”
Where Myers’ youth is concerned, he had been an adult for a year when the crime was committed, she added.

The Latest: Russian Olympic head apologized to IOC

0

The Latest on Russian doping (all times local):
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) – The Latest on Russian doping (all times local):
___
10:40 p.m.
Russia’s top Olympic official apologized to the International Olympic Committee board for doping violations ahead of its ruling that Russian athletes must compete under a neutral flag in Pyeongchang.
„I as president of the Russian Olympic Committee, apologize for breaches of anti-doping rules which were committed in our country,“ ROC president Alexander Zhukov said, according to a text of his speech on the Russian Olympic Committee website.
However, Zhukov, in his speech, rejected the evidence behind the central charge that Russia ran a doping system at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
The speech describes the World Anti-Doping Agency’s key whistleblower, former Moscow and Sochi anti-doping lab director Grigory Rodchenkov, as „a fraudster“ and an unreliable witness who was himself the main cause of any doping violations.
Zhukov also says in the speech that Russians competing under a neutral flag at the Olympics would „feel like outcasts.“
Zhukov struck a more conciliatory tone after the IOC ruling, saying he would discuss the issue of Russian participation with athletes, and praised the IOC for proposing the designation „Olympic Athlete from Russia“ for Pyeongchang, rather than a totally neutral name.
___
10:10 p.m.
Ian Chesterman, chef de mission for Australia’s Olympic team at Pyeongchang, said the IOC’s decision was an „appropriate and considered response… punishing those involved in the blatant cheating, the systematic manipulation that took place during the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games while allowing clean athletes to compete in Pyeongchang.“
In an Australian Olympic statement Wednesday, Chesterman added: „The culprits, the corrupt, have been dealt with. Russia, and all involved with Sochi 2014, had a responsibility to nurture the Olympic Games and respect the athletes competing by providing a fair competition. Clearly, across so many levels, that trust was abused.“
___
9:50 p.m.
Former NHL player Ilya Kovalchuk says Russia must go to the Olympics despite not being able to use its national flag at the Pyeongchang Games.
Kovalchuk tells Russian news agencies that a boycott would not work. He says „refusing means giving in“ to what he terms political pressure.
The IOC has ruled that any Russian gold medalists will have the Olympic anthem, not the Russian anthem, played on the podium. Kovalchuk says Russian players will sing their anthem if they can win a medal.
Kovalchuk adds that „patriotism and love for your country, it’s in your heart. For that you don’t have to shout or even wear the flag on your chest. And if, I hope to God, we manage to compete well, then we’ll definitely sing the anthem.“
Kovalchuk was named to Russia’s pre-Olympic hockey team on Tuesday.
___
9:35 p.m.
The spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry says the IOC ruling is „painful.“
Maria Zakharova writes on Facebook: „Is it painful? Very…. Will we survive? Yes.“
Zakharova adds that the 2014 Sochi Games showed that „Russia hosted a truly excellent Olympics.“
The IOC ruled there was a doping conspiracy at the Sochi Olympics.
___
9:25 p.m.
The IOC is seeking to wipe away much of Russia’s tainted Sochi operation from future Olympics.
Sochi organizing committee CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko has lost his place on the IOC panel overseeing preparations for the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
Chernyshenko was a familiar smiling face at the Sochi Games, which Russia spent $51 billion to organize and stage, and now leads the Kontinental Hockey League.
In a swathe of punishments for the Sochi doping program, the IOC also ruled that „no member of the leadership of the Russian Olympic Team“ in Sochi can be invited to the Pyeongchang Olympics.
Coaches and medical doctors whose athletes have been guilty of a doping violation will also be barred from accreditation in South Korea.
___
9:10 p.m.
The honorary president of the Russian Olympic committee says the country’s sportsmen and sportswomen should compete at the Pyeongchang Games as neutral athletes rather than boycott.
Leonid Tyagachev tells Russian state TV that „there’s a ruling, but just allow young athletes who didn’t compete at the Olympics in Sochi, let them compete clean and show that we’re from Russia and we’re not pariahs.“
Russian TV news has typically portrayed allegations of a doping system as unjust, and cited comments from viewers condemning the ruling.
Broadcasts on Russia’s main rolling news channel showed graphics including the Olympic rings crossed out with a red line and the phrase #noRUSSIAnoGAMES.
___
9 p.m.
The president of the Russian Olympic committee says the country’s athletes need time to consider whether they will take part in the Pyeongchang Games.
Alexander Zhukov says „we plan for it to be discussed“ by Russian sports officials and athletes at a forthcoming meeting before a final decision on participation, but didn’t give a date.
Zhukov paints the ruling as a compromise, saying „there’s positive and negative sides,“ and praising the International Olympic Committee decision to use the term „Olympic Athlete from Russia“ for Russian competitors under a neutral flag.
Previously, suspended countries have used terms such as „Independent Olympic Athlete,“ which was used last year for Kuwaiti competitors at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Zhukov says „they’ll be called Russian athletes and not some kind of neutrals… that’s very important.“
Two-time reigning world champion figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva, who also appeared in front of the IOC board, won’t say if she’ll compete as a neutral.
Medvedeva says „it will be discussed more and it’s very early to ask questions like that.“
___
8:30 p.m.
Olympic bronze medalist Matt Antoine was wrong, and was thrilled.
The American has been very outspoken in his criticism of how the IOC and the World Anti-Doping Agency has handled sanctioning Russia and its athletes for their roles in the state-sponsored doping scandal at the 2014 Sochi Games.
He says he was „truly in shock“ when he heard the IOC ruling that will bar Russia from Pyeongchang and allow clean Russian athletes to compete under the Olympic flag.
„It is without a doubt the correct decision and the only option that allows for athletes, nations, and fans to continue to believe in the Olympic movement,“ Antoine said.
Antoine says the decision was bold, and that athletes are celebrating the IOC’s stance.
„Dedicated athletes around the world thank you,“ Antoine said.
___
8:20 p.m.
The International Olympic Committee has ruled the Kremlin was not responsible for widespread doping by Russian athletes at the 2014 Sochi Games.
An IOC disciplinary commission under Samuel Schmid „has not found any documented, independent and impartial evidence confirming the support or the knowledge of this system by the highest state authority.“
However, the IOC has banned Vitaly Mutko and Yuri Nagornykh, who were Russia’s minister and deputy minister of sport at the time of the Sochi Olympics, from attending any future games.
Schmid’s commission does not specifically accuse either of wrongdoing, but says Mutko must „bear the major part of the administrative responsibility“ because the ministry was tasked with overseeing anti-doping operations at the Sochi Olympics.
___
8:15 p.m.
The immediate reaction from many athletes after the International Olympic Committee’s decision was this: Will Russia compete at all?
Russia was likely to be a medal factor at the Pyeongchang Games in several sliding sports, primarily men’s bobsled, men’s skeleton, women’s skeleton and men’s luge.
USA Luge veteran Chris Mazdzer says many Russians on the World Cup luge circuit had told him in recent weeks that they expected a full ban, and he’s wondering if President Vladimir Putin could decide to boycott.
„Putin could just say, ‚You can’t compete,‘ and they won’t,“ Mazdzer said.
Erin Hamlin, who won a bronze medal in women’s luge at the 2014 Sochi Games, says she wouldn’t be surprised if Russians weren’t in Pyeongchang at all.
„Russia is such a proud nation,“ Hamlin said. „It wouldn’t surprise me if they were not allowed to.“
___
7:50 p.m.
The IOC has banned Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko for life from the Olympics for his role in the country’s doping program.
Mutko, who was sports minister at the time of the 2014 Sochi Olympics, remains head of the 2018 World Cup organizing committee.
IOC commission chairman Samuel Schmid says the doping program „was under the authority of the Russian sports ministry. That is why the then sports minister has responsibility for the failure of this system.“
Mutko appeared at the Kremlin last week alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. There was no immediate comment from FIFA on Mukto’s continuing role as head of the Russian soccer federation and the World Cup organizing committee.
___
7:40 p.m.
The International Olympic Committee says Russian athletes will be able to compete at the upcoming Pyeongchang Olympics as neutrals.
The IOC, which also suspended the Russian Olympic committee and IOC member Alexander Zhukov, says some competitors will be invited to participate as an „Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR)“ without their national flag or anthem.
Russia could refuse the offer and boycott the games.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously said it would be humiliating for Russia to compete without national symbols.
The IOC also imposed a fine of $15 million on the Russian Olympic committee.
___
2:20 p.m.
The IOC’s medical director says Russian athletes are „particularly emphasized“ in targeted doping tests on athletes preparing for the Pyeongchang Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee’s top doctor, Richard Budgett, says requirements being put on Russia are „not made on other countries.“
Budgett briefed media on the Pyeongchang anti-doping task force’s work ahead of attending an IOC executive board meeting that will decide if Russian athletes can go to the upcoming games.
From April through October, almost 7,000 samples were taken from 4,000 athletes in tests coordinated by the IOC, World Anti-Doping Agency and winter sports federations.
The IOC says more than 17 percent of samples were taken from Russians. Skiers and snowboarders provided 471 out of 1,240 total Russian samples.
Budgett says athletes going to South Korea „can be more confident than ever“ of a clean Olympics.
___
10:40 a.m.
The IOC executive board is meeting to decide if Russian athletes can compete at the upcoming Pyeongchang Olympics despite evidence that the country ran an orchestrated doping program at the 2014 Sochi Games.
The International Olympic Committee did not bar Russia from the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The IOC instead asked sports governing bodies to decide which athletes could compete.
The IOC could now impose a stricter sanction by allowing Russians to compete only as neutral athletes without their national team name, flag or anthem.
IOC President Thomas Bach is scheduled to announce the 14-member board’s decision at 7:30 p.m. (1830 GMT) Tuesday.

Google pulls YouTube from Amazon Echo Show again, as well as from Fire TV

0

Google pulls newly restored YouTube service claiming lack of reciprocity from Amazon.
Mere days after the little tussle between Google and Amazon seemed to be clearing up, the two companies are apparently at it once again.
Two weeks ago Google allowed YouTube to return to the Amazon Echo Show after pulling the service in September, when the company cited a „broken user experience“ compared to what you find online and in Google-made apps.
Amazon’s solution was largely a case of having the Show display YouTube as if it were on a desktop browser, which was far from ideal, but it seemed to make everyone happy until a better solution could be developed.
That’s no longer the case. Google today announced that it’s yanking YouTube off the Echo Show again. To make matters worse, it’s also yanking YouTube app support from the Amazon Fire TV. From Google’s point of view, Amazon didn’t respond to the situation with the same degree of goodwill.
„We’ve been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other’s products and services,“ a Google spokesperson said in a statement to TechRadar. „But Amazon doesn’t carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn’t make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest’s latest products. Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and Fire TV. We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon.“
Your YouTube app on the Fire TV won’t be cut off until January 1, but unfortunately YouTube access on the Echo Show will be pulled again sometime this afternoon.
Losing YouTube on the Echo Show was always arguably just an inconvenience, but the move will hurt far more on the Fire TV, which is specifically made for streaming visual media. It’s a bold play on Google’s part, and one that will likely get some kind of response from Amazon.
As Google stated, Amazon responded to YouTube connectivity being pulled from the Show by taking some of Google’s (or rather, parent company Alphabet ’s) remaining branded devices off its retail site. Amazon already doesn’t offer many of Google’s devices that compete with its own products (nor Apple’s, for that matter), so pulling a comparatively non-mainstream device like Nest Thermostat E was just salt in the wound.
Maybe this could have been avoided if Amazon had simply relisted the Nest devices, but it’s not clear.

Microsoft’s partnership with Qualcomm to bring Windows 10 to ARM-powered devices is finally bearing fruit. At Qualcomm’s second annual Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui on Tuesday, launch partners Asus and HP unveiled the first Snapdragon 835-powered devices running Microsoft’s OS.
The Asus NovaGo is a traditional convertible featuring a 13.3-inch Full HD touchscreen display with Asus Pen support. It’ll be offered with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of local flash storage. The HP Envy x2, meanwhile, is a Surface clone that packs a 12.3-inch WUXGA+ display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and the same 8GB / 256GB RAM / storage options.
Both devices feature a fanless design and are incredibly lightweight. The NovaGo tips the scales at just 3.06 pounds while the Envy x2 will add just 1.54 pounds to your backpack. They’ll ship with Windows 10 S although both Asus and HP are offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.
The bigger story here, however, is the battery life and LTE connectivity afforded by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor. Asus claims its NovaGo is good for up to 22 hours of video playback on a single charge and over 30 days of standby while HP’s new Envy x2 is rated at up to 20 hours of local video playback and 700 hours of standby.
HP is shooting for a spring 2018 launch with pricing and mobile carrier support pending. Asus’ NovaGo will reportedly start at $599 for 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and scale up to $799 for 8GB of RAM and 256GB of space. That’s a bit more than I would have guessed for a Snapdragon-powered laptop but perhaps people will be willing to pay that price for true all-day battery life?
That’s assuming, of course, that the estimates are accurate. As we’ve seen in the past, such estimates can be a bit generous at times.

John Conyers steps down… and then insults our intelligence by endorsing his son

0

His retirement announcement reminds us he’s been in Congress too long.
Congressman John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat who has been a member of the House since 1965, announced his resignation from office—effective immediately—Tuesday morning, finally giving in to widespread calls for his resignation following accusations of sexual misconduct.
Last week, Jack Hunter wrote an article for Rare drawing a contrast between the swift firing of NBC’s Matt Lauer and Conyers’ refusal to resign even after Nancy Pelosi and Paul Ryan both urged him to do so. But now that Conyers is out, this would seem to be a victory for women’s empowerment and common decency.
As his planned resignation played out live on a Detroit morning show, however, Conyers couldn’t resist a pair of parting shots that further dishonored his office and insulted his constituents.
The first outrage came in his on-air remarks. “I want you to know that my legacy will continue through my children… especially in my oldest boy, John Conyers III who incidentally I endorsed to replace me in my seat in Congress.”
I’m tempted to admire the sheer ballsiness of resigning in utter disgrace while simultaneously asking voters to do you one last favor. It’s like getting fired from an Applebee’s for pissing in the soup and asking on your way out the door if they’ll hire your kid as a busboy.
“I have a great family here,” Conyers said, but at this point I’m not sure I believe him. He couldn’t possibly be referring to his wife, Monica Conyers. Mrs. Conyers graduated from Columbia Law School but then failed the bar exam four times before being elected to the Detroit City Council. There, without even finishing a full term, she made headlines for— among other things— punching a woman at a birthday party, dining and dashing to the tune of $3,000, calling the council president “Shrek” during a council meeting (yes, it’s on YouTube), and accepting bribes. The final item on that list resulted in her resignation in 2009 and her subsequent imprisonment for 27 months. In September 2015, she filed for divorce from her husband.
Dad’s a groper and mom’s a crooked psycho. Who wouldn’t vote for this kid?
John Conyers III, by the way, is 27 years old and so far, his biggest achievement seems to be partying with Detroit rapper Big Sean. The Michigan news site MLive put together a handy timeline of the misadventures of Detroit’s next congressman (if daddy has his way); from that time he posted a picture of himself behind the wheel of a government-owned Escalade with a bottle of Moet while underage, to his obscenely douchey social media reflections on rap music (to which he appended the tag “congressman john conyers” in order to attract more traffic).
Follow that link above and read some of his tweets. Then tell me how anyone could be expected to vote for this moron. Conyers has been in Congress for far too long. He’s forgotten that his seat does not belong to him, but to his constituents. It’s not an earldom he can simply will down.
(Incidentally, Ian Conyers, the 29-year-old Michigan state senator and grand-nephew of the disgraced former congressman has said he also plans to run for the vacant seat. The next Conyers Thanksgiving is going to get awkward.)
If endorsing his goof-up son wasn’t enough, former Rep. Conyers added one more insult to the intelligence of Michigan’s 13 th district when he said he was retiring “due to not being afforded the right of due process” and in order “to preserve” his “legacy and good name.”
But, if he truly never had sexually harassed anyone, as he continues to claim, he’d have had no reason to resign. Before leaving office, Conyers was the subject of a House Ethics Committee investigation, which will be abandoned now that he is no longer a congressman. He wasn’t being denied due process; he was getting due process and was afraid where it would lead. Otherwise, he’d have simply waited to be exonerated. By expecting his constituents to believe in his innocence while he openly takes steps to cover his guilt, he is showing his shameless contempt for them.
A man who feels so strongly that he can do whatever he wants with no consequences would certainly have no problem groping a staffer and, based on that attitude alone, has no place in the U. S. House of Representatives.

Destiny 2 Season 2 Clan Rewards Detailed

0

Bungie reveals the Destiny 2 season 2 clan rewards, which include benefits such as a chance to receive more Mercury tokens and better rewards for defeating Vex.
Today was a big day for Destiny 2 players as not only was the Curse of Osiris DLC expansion released, but a brand new clan season has also begun in the game. And with a new clan season comes brand new clan rewards for players to unlock.
By being part of a Destiny 2 clan, players can work as a collective to unlock various rewards and bonuses for themselves and their fellow clanmates. For Destiny 2 Season 2 these rewards and objectives include:
Unlocking each of the Destiny 2 Season 2 clan rewards is a fairly straightforward process. Just like in the first season of the game, players will be given a weekly clan milestone that challenges them to complete objectives (including completing Crucible matches) in order to earn clan XP.
Should members of a clan earn enough XP then their clan will level up and these Season 2 rewards are unlocked at each level. Given that clan XP is earned through normal play, players shouldn’t have to go out of their way to help their clan and earn these rewards.
This season’s rewards seem like a good mix of bonuses that will benefit vanilla Destiny 2 players and bonuses that will help those who have chosen to get the Curse of Osiris DLC. It seems that Bungie has purposefully alternated the rewards so that each level will benefit either vanilla Destiny 2 or Curse of Osiris DLC players. This way, no one has to wait too long to reap the benefits of earning clan XP.
Bungie may also think that by putting Curse of Osiris DLC bonuses in the clan rewards list, vanilla players may be encouraged to purchase the expansion. After all, one of the best parts of Destiny 2 is playing with friends and fellow clan members and now there’s a Season 2 reward unlock specifically for exploring Mercury in Curse of Osiris. Vanilla Destiny 2 players may well purchase the DLC just to make the most of clan membership and enjoy the rewards that they and their teammates have unlocked.
In any case, the new season gives players yet another reason to join a Destiny 2 clan and be an active participant in the clan progression system. The season will last for several months as season three will likely begin when the next Destiny 2 DLC is released in spring 2018.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Is ‘The Force Awakens’ On Netflix? Here’s Where To Watch It Before ‘The Last Jedi’ Premieres

We’re 10 days out from the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. For those who want to marathon the previous movies ahead of the newest installment, now’s the time to start planning. There are eight films to get through, if you include the prequels. (Nine if you include The Clone Wars film.) How best to stream these, if you don’t already own them on DVD? (Or, like some old school people, on VHS, with versions that date back to „before Lucas started ruining them.“) Most importantly, is Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Netflix? And if not, how should you go about watching?
Despite the rumors that Disney is looking into making their own stand alone streaming service that will host nothing but MouseHouse content, that is still far in the future. As it stands currently, Netflix US and Disney have a deal they made, back in 2016, which is known as a „pay one“ deal. That is, Netflix pays once a year, upfront, and for that they get the first run exclusive streaming rights to every last movie that Disney releases in theaters.
There’s just one catch. That deal was announced in the Spring of 2016, and it only counted towards theatrical releases dating from Jan. 1,2016 onward. Everything that was released prior to that, most of which were covered under other deals with other channels with streaming services (HBO, Hulu, STARZ, Amazon, etc) therefore are not eligible.
So Rogue One: A Star Wars Story? Released Dec. 18,2016. Totally covered under the Netflix deal, and streaming as we speak.
But Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was released on Dec. 17,2015? Not eligible. It was already snatched up under a complete different deal with STARZ.
That is, it’s not eligible on Netflix US. Disney and Netflix Canada, on the other hand, struck the deal so it started Jan. 1,2015. So our Canadian friends can stream Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Netflix. But we can’t.
Meanwhile, the original trilogies get even more complicated. When Disney struck the Grand Bargain back in 2012 with Lucasfilm, the first six movies were not included as part of the deal. None of these movies are streaming on Netflix. Nor was the Clone Wars movies. (The rights for that are owned by Warner Brothers. It is streaming on Netflix right now, but that’s just luck.)
Meanwhile, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi were all originally released under 20th Century FOX, and they still retain the rights to all six films through 2020. At that point, the rights three prequels and Episodes V and VI will revert back to Lucasfilm, and be owned by Disney. But the original Star Wars, Episode IV, A New Hope, is owned by FOX in perpetuity*.
(*Or until Disney simply buys up 20th Century FOX in a deal expected to be announced next week. Stay tuned.)
So how can you stream the old Star Wars movies? It turns out the answer is on Turner Broadcast Networks‘ TNT.
While Disney was striking deals with Netflix to have first streaming rights to all their broadcast releases, separately, Lucasfilm worked out a deal that Turner will have the rights to stream all things Star Wars after their first run streaming rights are over. Right now, that includes the six 20th Century FOX owned films. When STARZ’s rights to The Force Awakens ends, it too will go to TNT, as will Rogue One, when the first run deal with Netflix times out.
So, to recap: Here’s how to stream all the Star Wars movies ahead of The Last Jedi ’s release, assuming you are watching in chronological order.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in theaters on Friday, Dec. 15,2017.
