Aaron Sorkin on directing: 'I had the time of my life'

0

Aaron Sorkin has premiered his directorial debut, „Molly’s Game, “ to rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Aaron Sorkin was sitting in a restaurant with producers Amy Pascal and Mark Gordon, ticking off the names of top Hollywood directors who might be a good fit for the script Sorkin had just finished: „Molly’s Game, “ a drama about the so-called „poker princess“ Molly Bloom.
„When we got to the end, Mark and Amy said, ‚But we think you should direct it, ‚“ Sorkin recalled in an interview. „And I grabbed at the chance.“
„Molly’s Game“ premiered Friday night at the Toronto International Film Festival where it was immediately greeted with rave reviews, awards forecasts for star Jessica Chastain and a general reaction of: Sorkin, director, is a rip-roaring success.
He had come close before.
„I was going to direct ‚The Social Network.‘ Amy Pascal, Scott Rudin and I said, ‚You know what, let’s just give it to David Fincher and once he’s passes, I’ll direct it, ‚“ said Sorkin. „I’ve never been so lucky to not direct something in my life.“
Fate intervened, Sorkin and Fincher created one of the most celebrated films of the decade, and Sorkin’s chance to take the director’s chair had to wait. Danny Boyle took the reins of Sorkin’s next script, the Apple co-founder biopic „Steve Jobs.“
But the cards came up different for Sorkin on „Molly’s Game, “ which STX Entertainment will release Nov. 22. The story is a rich one — full of Sorkin’s whip-smart dialogue — that Sorkin says he became obsessed with telling. „At some point, you have to fall in love, “ he said. „With this, it was right away.“
The film is partly based on Bloom’s memoir about running a high-stakes poker game in Los Angeles where bold-faced names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Ben Affleck were regulars. Bloom was herself a former elite freestyle skier whose Olympic chances were dramatically derailed by an injury. She was later arrested as part of a larger mafia investigation.
Impressed by Bloom’s intellect, sense of humor and character, Sorkin could see Bloom was more interesting than her tabloid persona.
„She struck me as a unique movie heroine, “ he says.
Sorkin, the 56-year-old writer of „Moneyball, “ “Charlie Wilson’s War“ and „A Few Good Men, “ didn’t pen the screenplay expecting to direct.
„But once I did write it, I just had this very specific notion of what it should feel like, what it should look like, what it should be like. I wasn’t sure that I was going to be able to articulate it to a director, “ said Sorkin. „I’m not done wanting to work with great directors. On this movie, I just didn’t want to litigate my choices.“
The experience, he says, was one of the most rewarding of his career.
„I had the time of my life, “ he says. „I loved every minute of it.“

More artificial intelligence, fewer screens: the future of computing unfolds

0

Screen-free user experiences such as Amazon Echo and autonomous vehicles portend a future of computing without screens.
We are approaching the day when user interfaces and user experience (UI and UX) will mean much more than working through screens on devices. It may not involve screens at all.
That’s the word from Accenture, which spells out, in a recent report, the rise of AI as the new purveyor of UI and UX. Developments such as autonomous vehicles and voice-activated home assistants are just early examples surfacing that suggest more screenless computing is on the horizon.
This has implications for the way enterprise users work, as well as customers. Already, there’s plenty of talk — and pilots — involving the use of connected tools and wearables in the workplace that serve to augment employee tasks.
The report’s authors make three predictions:
Accenture’s findings are based on a survey of 5,400 executives across the globe. „Moving beyond aback-end tool for the enterprise, AI is taking on more sophisticated roles within technology interfaces, “ the report’s authors state. „From autonomous driving vehicles that use computer vision, to live translations made possible by artificial neural networks, AI is making every interface both simple and smart – and setting a high bar for how future interactions will work.“
In the survey, 79% of executives agree that AI will help accelerate technology adoption throughout their organizations. In addition, 85% indicate they will invest extensively in AI-related technologies over the next three years.
The Accenture authors cite a prime example of where AI is making its first inroads into enterprise UI and UX: voice-activated systems. „Advances in natural language processing and machine learning make technology more intuitive to use, like telling virtual assistants to schedule a meeting instead of accessing scheduling software to find a time, create an event, and type the details, “ they state. „AI already plays a variety of roles throughout the user experience. At the simplest level, it curates content for people, like the mobile app Spotify suggesting new music based on previous listening choices. In a more significant role, AI applies machine learning to guide actions toward the best outcome.“
The leading enterprise technology vendors are also looking to AI as the future of computer interfaces — „from Salesforce Einstein, to Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services, to the Google Cloud Platform .“ There are also open source AI platforms available — „from Google’s TensorFlow to Intel’s Trusted Analytics Platform. Caffe, a deep learning framework developed at the University of California, Berkeley, was the basis of the Deep Dream project Google released in 2016 to show how their artificial neural networks viewed images.“
The combination of „intuitive, natural interactions and the ready availability of open source tools paves the way for big changes across the interface, “ the Accenture team adds.
How to get stated on this artificially intelligent, screenless journey? In an accompanying article at Tech Emergence, Paul Daugherty, chief technology and innovation officer at Accenture, describes the actions companies who want to explore AI UX applications need to take:

A perfect storm of corporate idiocy

0

At this point in the game there should be a single page on every corporate website, preferably accessible from its front page, that includes the name and all..
At this point in the game there should be a single page on every corporate website, preferably accessible from its front page, that includes the name and all contact details for the Chief Security Officer, including the last four digits of her social security number. It should be her responsibility to ensure that no one uses this information for nefarious purposes in addition to her daily operations. This honeypot should inspire the this CSO to go to great lengths to protect herself and her company’s data.
It’s only fair, right?
This person – who in Equifax’s case was named John Kelley III and earned nearly $3 million for releasing 143 million customer records (about $50 per record) – should also be the first to be fired during a breach. Further, this person should no longer work in “security” and instead be relegated where he can do less damage, perhaps in food service but not food preparation.
I doubt they’ d be trustworthy enough to fry a hamburger.
I know it’s a little Hunger Games but I think that’s where we are in 2017. Corporate security is an afterthought.
I propose this for a simple reason: no one else on Equifax’s corporate leadership board works on security. There are plenty of folks dedicate to sales and revenue growth but only Kelley has “has responsibility for legal services, global sourcing, security and compliance, government and legislative relations and more.” He’s a lawyer.
Breaches are an affront to decades of innovation and research. Breaches are an affront to ethics, customer support, and trust. Breaches are an affront to shareholders and those who depended on Equifax for, arguably, a ridiculous service in these days of trust-less networks and powerful data mining tools.
Add in a clearly inept team at, we assume, Edelman, and you have a perfect storm of corporate idiocy. Look at this:
Yesterday I tried Equifax’s “security checker”/Wordpress instance yesterday, September 8. It said:
Apparently, however, you could type in Booger/123456 and get the same answer. Now, thanks to what we can assume was some interference by Equifax’s legal department, nobody is affected, not even Booger.
That’s right: it went from “Yeah, you’ re definitely probably hacked” to “No, you’ re probably not hacked” overnight. This tool should be burnt down.
In short, Equifax can’ t protect your data, can’ t build a website, and can’ t get its story straight. And this is a publicly-traded company with a century of tradition and trust behind it.
Why am I so angry at this? Imagine John Kelley III had a box of family photos. He sent those family photos to a service for digitization. Those photos included tender moments, pictures loved ones dead and gone, and snaps joyous occasions. There’s ap picture there of him passing the bar, of getting married, of saying goodbye to his father. This photo digitization service did the job – poorly, to be clear, because we’ re equating it to Equifax – and then threw the box of photos with full identifying information onto the street. John Kelley’s grandmother’s photo was used to create a fake ID. John Kelley’s birthday party pic was posted to Facebook and someone figured out his birthdate or some other piece of trivial information and opened a credit card in his name. Trolls found a picture of his car, deduced its location, and cut the brake lines. The list of offenses can go on ad nauseam.
Now imagine the same thing is happening to you. Almost monthly your family photos, your birth certificate, and your diary are being ransacked or nearly ransacked by criminals. Your valuables are being broadcast to those who would like to steal them. Imagine that the companies you trust with your health, wealth, and privacy are leaking your information almost daily and that the tools used to secure that data are infuriatingly easy to crack as possible. You’ d be mad as hell and you wouldn’ t take it anymore.
But you aren’ t. And you do.
Until John Kelley III is held accountable, until everyone who leaks our data and uses weak tools and methods to secure our data is out of a job, we will not be safe. Sure, many of us have little to hide but it is our right to nonetheless hide what little we do have. Corporate security talks a big game but fails every time. That has to change.

US calls for UN Security Council vote on North Korea on Monday

0

The United States on Friday told the U. N. Security Council that it intends to call a meeting on Monday to vote on a draft resolution establishing additional sanctions on North Korea for its missile and nuclear programme, the U. S. Mission to the United Nations said in a statement.
UNITED NATIONS: The United States on Friday (Sep 8) told the U. N. Security Council that it intends to call a meeting on Monday to vote on a draft resolution establishing additional sanctions on North Korea for its missile and nuclear programme, the U. S. Mission to the United Nations said in a statement.
The United States wants the Security Council to impose an oil embargo on North Korea, ban its exports of textiles and the hiring of North Korean labourers abroad, and to subject leader Kim Jong Un to an asset freeze and travel ban, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters on Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear how North Korean ally China and Russia would vote, but a senior U. S. official on Friday night expressed skepticism that either nation would accept anything more stringent than a ban on imports of North Korean textiles.
Chinese officials have privately expressed fears that imposing an oil embargo could risk triggering massive instability in its neighbour.
A Security Council resolution needs nine votes in favour and no vetoes by permanent members Britain, the United States, France, Russia or China to pass.
Tension on the Korean peninsula has escalated as the North has stepped up the development of weapons, testing a string of missiles this year, including one flying over Japan, and conducting its sixth nuclear test on Sunday.
South Korea braced for a possible further missile test by North Korea when it marks its founding anniversary on Saturday.
Experts believe the isolated regime is close to its goal of developing a powerful nuclear weapon capable of reaching the United States, something President Donald Trump has vowed to prevent.

iPhone through the ages: just how much has it changed?

0

The first iPhone was poor technologically, but it defined a genre and it’s now a smartphone powerhouse.
Update: We’re just days away from the next chapter of the iPhone story, with the iPhone 8, iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus expected to launch on September 12. iPhone 8 iPhone 7S iPhone 7S Plus
It was January 9 2007 when Steve Jobs took to the stage of the Moscone Center in San Francisco to announce the arrival of the iPhone, which went on sale on June 29 of the same year. That’s a full 10 years ago!
If you find it difficult to remember that far back, a book about a boy wizard hit shelves for the first time and people were flocking to the cinema to get teary-eyed at Will Smith in The Pursuit Of Happyness.
While our pop music and movie choices may not have improved much, smartphones were changed forever: from that point on, touchscreens, apps and digital media were the way forward.
And the next big turning point in smartphone history could be just around the corner as we prepare ourselves for Apple’s next big offering, with rumors pointing towards the iPhone X / iPhone Edition . iPhone X iPhone Edition
Click on through to see every version of the iPhone from the first ten years.
Launched: June 2007 (US) , November 2007 (UK)
Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone as three devices in one: a touchscreen iPod, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a truly mobile web browser.
Now we take touchscreens, digital media playback and web access for granted, but in 2007 the iPhone was unlike anything that had appeared before. Its 3.5-inch screen had a 320 x 480 pixel reoslution (one of the best displays of the time) , with a 2MP camera built in, and up to 8GB of storage.
Third-party apps were not yet allowed on „iPhone OS“. In the TechRadar review, we noted that despite several shortcomings, the phone had „changed the mobile device landscape… multitouch will prove to be a model for interfaces in the future“. TechRadar review
Launched: July 2008
High-speed connectivity was big news in 2008, which is why the second generation iPhone included 3G in its moniker (rather confusingly, as this was the second generation iPhone) . It also brought with it a thinner shape, a plastic back and – crucially – support for the newly launched App Store.
The app store model worked so well you’ll now find it replicated in everything from your smart TV to your Windows 8 laptop, and the change helped Apple’s phone really start to gain traction. Windows 8
We said in our iPhone 3G review that buyers would be „amazed by the function and feel of this handset“. The iPhone era had begun in earnest. iPhone 3G review
Launched: June 2009
The iPhone 3GS upgrade was viewed as disappointingly minor at the time, but look at the detail and a different picture emerges: as well as faster performance, the new handset offered a better 3.2MP camera (that could now record video as well as take photos) , extra storage options and voice control (the precursor to Siri) . iPhone 3GS
The display was the same 3.5-inch 320 x 480 screen, and the device’s appearance remained largely unchanged from the 3G model. TechRadar’s take on the unit praised the multimedia and internet capabilities, while still finding niggles with the camera, call quality and battery life – this was the first of the more iterative updates to the iPhone, but did enough to keep users happy. take on the unit
Launched: June 2010
If the 3GS was a minor upgrade, the iPhone 4 was a serious step up – a new, flat design with an integrated antenna (although questions were raised about how you held the device) , a high-resolution Retina display (640 x 960 pixels) that showed the rest of the world how it was done and a superior 5MP camera (featuring HD video recording) , on top of internal performance improvements. iPhone 4
The competition was catching up, and Apple had responded in brilliant fashion. We were certainly impressed, despite some reservations about the high price, saying „It’s intriguing to see record-breaking numbers queuing up to pick up this device – but after playing with it for a few days, you can see why.“
Launched: October 2011
Apple pulled out the „S“ tag again for the fifth generation handset, indicating a minor upgrade rather than a major overhaul.
The design of the iPhone 4S was the same, but inside was Apple’s new A5 processor, vastly improved graphics capabilities and an 8MP camera with 1080p video recording. iOS was evolving at the same rate as the hardware, of course, and Siri began life as an iPhone 4S exclusive. iPhone 4S
The improvements were enough to persuade us to describe it as „the best thing Apple has ever created“ in the official TechRadar review.
Launched: September 2012
After six handsets, Apple finally decided it was time to tweak the iPhone’s screen size and aspect ratio.
Coming in at 20% lighter than its predecessor, the 2012 iPhone adopted a 4-inch screen, running at 640 x 1136 pixels.
Otherwise, despite the usual speed bump and a stronger antenna, it was very much business as usual in terms of the design and capabilities.
Our biggest gripe in our iPhone 5 review was with the aging iOS, but with iOS 7 arriving on September 18 that issue is very much negated, which will please a number of iPhone 5 users who’ve been holding onto the handset for nearly a year. iPhone 5 review iOS 7
Launched: September 2013
The big step in the seventh stage of the iPhone’s evolution was the arrival of the iPhone 5C, a slightly cheaper, plastic-backed model to help battle Android in the busy mobile middle market. The signs were there already – remember Apple kept the iPhone 4 and 4S on sale during the iPhone 5 era. iPhone 5C
Apart from the plastic shell and larger battery, though, the iPhone 5C was, in terms of specs, a carbon copy of the iPhone 5 – which was retired to make way for the two new handsets.
As for the flagship iPhone 5S, it was a case of under-the-hood improvements again: more power, a better camera, and a fancy fingerprint reader hidden under the home button. The bigger changes arrived with iOS 7, the most radical revamp of the mobile operating system since the App Store arrived back in 2008. iPhone 5S iOS 7 App Store
Launched: September 2014
After the smaller changes that came with the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S, Apple was back to its revolutionary best with the following generation, as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus brought the biggest alterations in design and features since the leap from the iPhone 4S to the iPhone 5. iPhone 6 iPhone 6 Plus
The most striking change the eighth generation iPhones ushered in was undoubtedly the screen size, with the iPhone 6’s display leaping from the iPhone 5’s 4 inches to 4.7 inches. Apple also upped the resolution from the 1136 x 640 of previous iPhones to 1334 x 750. This meant that the larger screen still had a high pixel density of 326ppi (pixels per inch) , so image quality was incredibly sharp and detailed.
As the name suggests, the iPhone 6 Plus went even larger, with a whopping 5.5-inch display, marking Apple’s first foray into the phablet market. The iPhone 6 Plus also got a resolution boost to full high definition, 1920 x 1080. With a pixel density of 401ppi, not only does the iPhone 6 Plus have the largest screen of any iPhone ever, but it also has the clearest.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus also benefit from Apple’s use of „dual-domain pixels“, which along with the 1300: 1 contrast ratio makes the screen on the handsets look absolutely fantastic.
Both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus also ditched the industrial and sharp-edged design that had been with the iPhone for four generations, in favour of a more ergonomically-pleasing chassis with a screen that curves into a body with rounded edges and corners.
Both handsets feature metal backs, and as we pointed out in our reviews, they take a lot of design language from the iPad Air, resulting in a product that looks and feels genuinely premium. iPad Air
Another big change is that the boosted screen sizes and the corresponding increase in body dimensions have meant that the power button now resides on the right-hand side of the devices.
Along with the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Apple, released iOS 8, which kept many of the flat aesthetics of iOS 7 and ushered in some neat new features. iOS 8
It wasn’t a completely smooth launch, however, and after only a few months Apple has already patched it to iOS 8.1.3 in a bid to squash bugs and fix problems.
The rocky launch of iOS 8 was in stark contrast to the assured releases of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, with Apple proudly announcing that the two iPhones broke the company’s records for pre-orders in the first night they were available. Apple proudly announcing that the two iPhones broke the company’s records
Launched: September 2015
Say hello to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. So what can you expect from Apple’s ninth generation smartphone? As the names suggest the 6S and 6S Plus don’t exactly ring the changes. Rather they build on the solid base provided by the 6 and 6 Plus from 2014. iPhone 6S iPhone 6S Plus
The keep the same 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays, with the same resolutions, and there’s nothing new in the design department with Apple sticking with the well received look of its eighth generation devices. There is however a new color, with rose gold joining silver, gold and space grey. Lovely.
Both still sport all metal bodies, but they’re now formed from 7000 series aluminum, which Apple says is super tough.
There is a new power unit under the hood, with Apple’s new A9 chip boosting performance, while the rear facing camera is now an impressive 12MP offering with a new Live Photo feature which can capture a few seconds of video with each snap.
The big talking point here though is Apple’s new 3D Touch technology. This allows the display on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus to monitor how much pressure you’re applying to it.
With the ability to measure the force of your finger, the new iPhones can provide additional functionality. Peek at content without the screen it’s embedded in by lightly pressing on it, and press firmly to open it in a separate window.
Launched: March 2016
The latest cheaper release from Apple is the iPhone SE, which takes a lot of features from the iPhone 5S and brought them into a phone ready to face the market of 2016. iPhone SE
It’s the perfect choice for you if you’re looking for a smaller iPhone as it comes with a 4-inch screen. The body looks much like the iPhone 5S and while the design may seem a little tired, it still feels premium to the touch.
Plus the iPhone SE comes with a 12MP rear-facing camera, a 64GB storage option and iOS 9 software.
The screen technology on the iPhone SE is a little out of date but the iPhone SE is the cheapest Apple phone you can buy right now and it offers up a better battery life than any other iPhone you can buy today.
Launched: September 2016
Then there’s the latest phones from Apple – the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. Launched in September 2016, these are two of the best devices the company has ever made, and the iPhone 7 Plus even received 4.5 stars out of 5 in the TechRadar review. iPhone 7 iPhone 7 Plus
We praised the camera on both of these devices, especially the iPhone 7 Plus, as that comes with a telephoto lens which allows you to take 2x lossless optical zoom photos with ease.
The iPhone 7 still has a great shooter though, with fantastic low light skills and one of the best point and shoot rear cameras on the market.
This is also the time Apple embraced waterproof phone tech. Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus come with IP67 ratings, which means you can submerge your phone in water for a few minutes or more without worrying about it getting damaged.
Perhaps the biggest headline of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is the fact the company has said goodbye to the 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple called the decision „brave“ to lose the legacy tech, but many have been disappointed the company has ditched it. Up next: We expect to see the iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus or iPhone 8 very soon. iPhone 7S iPhone 7S Plus iPhone 8

Joe Paterno may have known of earlier abuse by Jerry Sandusky: report

0

Previously non-public document shows Paterno knew of abuse before 2001 charge.
Penn State coach Joe Paterno may have known of Jerry Sandusky’s sexual abuse of children before Sandusky was arrested in 2011, CNN reported Saturday.
According to a police document obtained by CNN that was not previously public record, the legendary coach Paterno told Mike McQueary when McQueary witnessed Sandusky sexually abusing a child and it „was the second complaint of this nature he had received.“
McQueary, a former player and then assistant coach, made the claim that led to the 2012 conviction of Sandusky, a long-time defensive coordinator for Penn State under Paterno. Sandusky is serving a 30-year prison sentence.
