Rumours suggest next iPhone may be unveiled at Apple event in September. The latest reports suggest Apple has scheduled a product launch for 12 September, the date long rumoured to mark the arrival of the iPhone 8, or whatever the tenth-anniversary version of the smartphone ends up being called. The latest report comes via the, citing unnamed sources that are familiar with Apple’s plans. Apple normally holds a launch event for the iPhone in September, so the rumour isn’t particularly surprising, and the date has been long suggested as the likely one for the event. The report adds that three phones are expected to be unveiled, alongside a new Apple Watch smartwatch and an Apple TV, with an iPhone 7S, 7S Plus, as well as a high-end iPhone 8 that could cost $US1,000 and is rumoured to feature facial recognition and an OLED display with thin bezel. The event is expected to happen at its new Apple Park campus. Apple hasn’t yet sent out invitations for the event, and likely won’t until a few days before it’s scheduled – though industry watchers and tech journalists will already have 12 September in their calendars.

Rating potential tech moguls for president

0

Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, Jeff Bezos could make a run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.
LOS ANGELES — The next presidential cycle is closer than you think.
For all practical purposes, it starts heating up next year, and so far there’s no clear front-runner on the Democratic side to challenge President Donald Trump.
There has been talk lately about notable tech CEOs such as Apple’s Tim Cook and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg picking up the mantle and going head to head with our CEO-in-chief. Both have recently criss-crossed the country in what looked like pre-presidential runs. (Both deny interest in the job.)
Let’s handicap their chances, along with two other prominent tech leaders, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.
Facebook’s duo
Critics on both sides would attack. Conservatives would call him an out of touch San Francisco area liberal, while the other side would blast Zuckerberg for creating a platform that with many, many fake news stories, played a major factor in helping to elect Trump.
It’s a long-shot, but if it was down to these four, we think Cook could emerge successfully.
Keep on doing the road trips, and remember the old Clinton administration credo: It’s the economy, stupid. What tripped up Clinton in her historic loss to Trump? Forgetting about the Democrat’s base in the Midwest.
Cook recently announced a new Apple data center in Iowa and Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn opened for business in Wisconsin. All Cook has to do is get some more action going in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and focus on bringing jobs back to the heartland.
If Apple makes iPhones there, Cook could be a serious contender for the Democratic nomination.

UN Security Council 'strongly condemns' NKorea missile test

0

The U. N. Security Council has strongly condemned‘ North Korea’s launch of a ballistic missile over Japan and is reiterating demands that Pyongyang halt its ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs.
The U. N. Security Council strongly condemned North Korea’s launch of a ballistic missile over Japan on Tuesday, reiterating demands that Pyongyang halt its ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs.
After an emergency meeting on the missile test, the U. N.’s most powerful body called North Korea’s actions „outrageous, “ saying it was deliberately undermining peace and stability in the region. The council called for North Korea to take „immediate, concrete actions“ to „reduce tensions in the Korean Peninsula and beyond.“
The missile flight came less than a month after the council imposed its toughest-yet sanctions on North Korea, and it’s not immediately clear whether any further actions could follow.
„We’ll be talking about next steps starting now, “ Japanese Ambassador Koro Bessho said after the meeting.
For now, he said, the statement sends the North a strong message „that the international community will not accept its reckless behavior.“
North Korea isn’t on the 15-member council. While the was meeting was underway in New York, Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency said leader Kim Jong Un expressed „great satisfaction“ with the launch and called for more ballistic missile tests targeting the Pacific Ocean.
Going into a closed session that evolved into an open meeting, ambassadors from several countries said they wanted to discuss how to respond, but first of all to show that the international community was united in firmly rebuking the missile test. The missile — designed to carry a nuclear payload — traveled almost 1,700 miles (2,700 kilometers) into the Pacific and triggered alert warnings as it soared over northern Japan.
„It is time for the North Korean regime to recognize the danger they are putting themselves in, “ said U. S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, whose country has traded threats with North Korea in recent weeks. „The United States will not allow their lawlessness to continue, and the rest of the world is with us.“
Still, while the council statement was unanimous, the discussion was a reminder that members have different approaches to the issue.
Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi called on all parties to „avoid any rhetoric or action that might exacerbate tension“ on the Korean Peninsula.
Both he and his Russian counterpart noted their countries had previously proposed a halt to both North Korean nuclear development and joint U. S.-South Korean military exercises, which are currently underway.
„The exercises being conducted must be scaled down, “ Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said. „There is an urgent need to create an atmosphere of trust among states in the region.“
The Pyongyang news agency said Tuesday’s missile launch was a „muscle-flexing“ response to the war games, which the North views as rehearsals for an invasion. North Korea had requested a Security Council meeting about the exercises last week.
The U. S. says the decades-old drills‘ only purpose is to improve readiness to defend South Korea and maintain stability on the Korean peninsula.
This year, the exercises come weeks after U. S. President Donald Trump warned he could unleash „fire and fury“ if North Korea continued threatening the United States, and the North then said it was considering firing missiles into waters near the U. S. territory of Guam.
The Security Council said Tuesday it was committed to a peaceful, diplomatic and political solution to the situation and called for strict implementation of its existing sanctions.
The latest sanctions include a ban on North Korean exports of coal, iron, lead and seafood products, together worth over $1 billion for a country with total exports valued at just $3 billion last year. The U. S. had suggested in July that the council could do more, including restricting oil to the North Korean military and boosting air and maritime restrictions.

Nordkorea: US-Botschafterin Haley fordert "ernsthafte" Reaktion

0

Vereinten Nationen, Nikki Haley.

Vocus confirms subsea cable outage

0

Vocus has confirmed that the SMW3 subsea cable between Perth and Singapore is experiencing an outage thanks to a cable break, with an expected repair date of mid October.
Vocus Communications has confirmed that the SEA-ME-WE3 (SMW3) subsea cable is down between Perth and Singapore due to a break in the line.
The cable system, which services South East Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe, should be repaired by October 13, although Vocus said this is a „tentative“ date that could change.
„SEA-ME-WE3 submarine cable between Perth and Singapore is currently down due to a confirmed cable break, “ Vocus said on Wednesday morning.
„Customers can expect to see increased latency to Asian destinations until this link is restored.“
According to a report by Viet Nam News, the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) and the Intra-Asia (IA) subsea cable systems are also currently down, with the AAG broken at two spots around 66km and 85km from the cable landing station in Hong Kong and the IA cable broken around 54km from Hong Kong.
„Internet providers in Viet Nam failed to provide an explanation as to why all three internet cables were down at the same time and were unclear about the timeline of when the cables would be fixed, “ the report said.
The SMW3 also suffered an outage due to the cable being severed back in 2013.
Vocus is currently working on constructing a replacement cable system for the SMW3, last week announcing that its Australia Singapore Cable (ASC) will be completed ahead of schedule, with services expected to launch in July next year.
Initially planned for September 2018, Vocus said that despite adding a spur to Christmas Island, the subsea cable will be ready to go live in less than a year ahead of competitor cable systems Indigo and Trident .
Trident, Indigo, and the ASC are all aimed at replacing the slower-speed SMW3 cable, which currently carries data traffic between Australia and Singapore.
Vocus signed Alcatel -Lucent Submarine Networks in December to help build the 4,600-kilometre ASC, which is designed to carry 40Tbps at a minimum across four fibre pairs.
According to Vocus, the ASC is the only submarine cable system to have all landing party permits and approvals in both Indonesia and Singapore, and to have a „ready and waiting“ fibre network across Australia that’s able to transport traffic from Asia to all Australian capital cities, with construction now under way at the landing sites in Singapore, Indonesia, and Perth.
The ASC’s marine route survey and full system design have been completed and the marine transmission system manufacturing is „in full swing“, Vocus said, with 50 percent of the work done on the marine cable, 80 percent on the land-based electronics and power systems, and 40 percent on the subsea electronics systems.
Originally a 50-50 joint-venture deal between Vocus and Nextgen Networks, the ASC will connect Perth with Singapore and Indonesia at a cost of AU$170 million.
Vocus subsequently purchased Nextgen Networks for AU$700 million in June 2016, paying an additional AU$27 million for the ASC and AU$134 million for the North West Cable System (NWCS) .
The 28Tbps two-pair fibre-optic, 1,070-kilometre Trident subsea cable will connect Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia, with stage one slated to go live in April this year and the entire cable to be completed by the second quarter of 2018. It utilises 100Gbps coherent dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology, which is upgradeable to 400Gbps.
The Indigo subsea cable system, announced earlier this year, will connect Sydney, Perth, Singapore, and Jakarta, spanning around 9,000km with two fibre pairs and a design capacity of 18Tbps.
Indigo is expected to be completed by mid-2019.

Ausgangssperre in Houston: Trump verspricht Hochwasseropfern schnelle Hilfe

US-Präsident Donald Trump will den hochwassergeplagten Menschen in Texas finanzielle Hilfe zukommen lassen.
