Verizon has started rolling out a Nougat update for the S8 and S8+ which Includes a fix for Bluetooth audio when in call, and faster Face recognition. The nav bar show/hide function was also updated.
Verizon has started rolling out an update for Galaxy S8 and S8+ devices on the network. However, before you get too excited, it’s still just Android 7.0 Nougat. The update does consist of a lot of bug fixes and improvements which include an option for faster face recognition, navigation bar tweaks, and fixes for things like VPNs, car Bluetooth, and alarms.
The full changelog for this latest version (Builds NRD90M. G950USQU1AQGL and NRD90M. G955USQU1AQGL for the S8 and S8+, respectively is listed below.
Keep in mind that Samsung also says that Face recognition is less secure than using Iris, fingerprint, PIN, or pattern to unlock, but this update makes unlocking the S8 and S8+ even faster shjould you opt to stick with that method.
The navigation bar update changes the single tap of the lock/unlock button to prevent nav bar changes to a double-tap. What’s left are bug fixes and app-updates. Bluetooth audio also received an update which should fix drops after receiving a call.
If you don’t see an OTA waiting for you, you can check in Settings -> About phone -> Software updates -> Check for Updates, and if one is available you should be prompted to download it. Just make sure you’re on Wi-Fi, as the update is going to be quite big.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is assembling a panel of experts to discuss the matter of openly transgender individuals already serving in the U. S. military.
President Donald Trump on Friday directed the Pentagon to extend indefinitely a ban on transgender individuals joining the military, but he gave Mattis the authority to decide those already serving.
Mattis says in a statement released Tuesday that the Pentagon, in consultation with the Department of Homeland Security, will develop a plan that „will promote military readiness, lethality and unit cohesion.“
He says, „Panel members will bring mature experience, most notably in combat and deployed operations, and seasoned judgment to this task. „
The White House had said Friday that transgender people would be allowed to continue serving until Mattis had completed such an analysis.

Sectors and Technologies Most Likely to Be Hacked

Web developers reported that the government and financial sectors are the most vulnerable to hacks and that smart home (IoT) is the most vulnerable technology.
Web developers reported that the government and financial services are the two sectors that are most vulnerable to hacking, and that smartphone home IoT is the most vulnerable technology. The survey was conducted for web applications security provider Netsparker by Propeller Insights. „Because of recent election-related events, it’s not surprising that developers and IT professionals have so little confidence in the ability of governments to prevent hacking, “ said Netsparker CEO Ferruh Mavituna. „But the reality is that all organizations and enterprises should take precautions to prevent data breaches.“ The survey respondents represented 101 American web developers who work in a wide range of industries, with the largest segment representing science, technology and programming businesses. The biggest demographic represented, with 43.6 percent of the respondents, fell between the ages of 25 and 34 years, followed by 27.7 percent who were between 35 and 44 years, and 15.8 percent who were between 18 and 24 years.

Veo uses AI to let amateur soccer clubs video matches without the need for a camera operator

Veo, a Copenhagen-based startup, wants to “democratise the recording of football”. By taking advantage of developments in AI and video camera technology, the company offers a solution for amateur soccer clubs that want to video and stream matches and training sessions without the need for a camera operator or vision mixer/editor.
The Veo camera mount consists of two 4K cameras encased within a 3D-printed box, designed to be positioned on a four-metre tripod just outside of the pitch’s halfway line. The cameras then record a 180-degree panoramic view of the full pitch, with the resulting image stitched together and the AI-tech working hard to follow the action via virtual panning and zooming on the resulting recording video file.
That, of course, means that a portion of the image will often be cropped out, resulting in a loss of resolution overall. However, the idea is that by starting with 4K the resulting video quality is more than sufficient, not least for playback on smaller screens, such as smartphones and tablets.
“Today, less than 1 per cent of all football matches are recorded, ” says Veo co-founder and CEO Henrik Teisbæk. “This is because in order to record a football match properly, you need a cameraman to be filming from an elevated position for 90 mins, and then be able to edit the footage afterwards. Most teams simply don’ t have the resources required for this, meaning that millions of goals and unique footballing moments are never viewed or shared by the players”.
To get around this, Teisbæk says Veo’s AI technology can detect where the action is on the field, and automatically zoom and pan to follow the ball – just like a camera operator would do. “We have spent nearly two years developing the technology to detect where on the pitch a camera operator would point and zoom, ” he explains.
“Using deep neural networks and computer vision, our tech can now track the ball and players with consistency and precision. This is combined with advanced video editing techniques, so we can zoom and pan inside the full panoramic video and ‘crop’ out the relevant part”.
Despite the aforementioned loss of quality, the advantage of this approach is that the Veo cameras can record from a static position, and don’ t need to pan and tilt during the recording. It also means coaches and players can manually create their own edits after the match, by choosing the virtual camera angle and where to zoom.
“Since the zooming is done digitally, the output pixel quality is reduced. However it’s important to stress that the recordings are not meant for professional TV broadcasting and that the reduced video quality format works really well on devices with smaller screens, ” reiterates Teisbæk.
The startup’s business model is based on subscription fees from football clubs. The entry camera subscription will starts from £999 annually. Clubs can upgrade to embed their local sponsors’ logos onto the match videos and highlights, which could also provide those clubs with a welcome additional revenue stream.
Meanwhile, I’ m told Veo has raised a total of €2 million in seed funding to date, with Copenhagen-based Seed Capital most recently investing €1.1 million in April 2017. The remaining €900,000 came via angel investors including: David Fellah (Founder of Designit) ; Per Zachariassen (Founder of Blu and Skylark) ; Henrik Hancke (Founder of Blu and Skylark) ; and Kasper Wedendahl (Founder of Bacon) .

YouTube rolls out redesign and unveils new logo

Redesigns are tricky beasts, almost inevitably dividing opinion and leading to questions about why things couldn’t have just been left alone. Running the risk of a double whammy of complaints, YouTube has rolled out not only a redesign of its sites, but also a brand new logo.
Both the desktop and mobile versions of YouTube have been treated to a new look. It’s the redesign that has been beta tested on users for a few months, and with a few extra tweaks, the company is ready to give everyone access to it. While a fresh lick of paint for the site and apps was expected, the new logo is rather more of a surprise.
The new logo is not a radical departure from its predecessor, but it’s an important change nonetheless. The „Tube“ part of the name is no longer encased in a red screen lozenge; the lettering has broken out completely and kerning has been tweaked. The brightness of the red used on the screen/lozenge icon has been ramped up, and there’s now a play button featured in the logo. This also serves as the sites new icon.
The site-wide redesign is likely to get people talking as well — not least because mobile users are going to be disappointed by the lack of dark mode. YouTube shares the following video to highlight some of the changes:
Over on the YouTube blog, Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan gives full details of the redesign:
What do you make of the changes? A step in the right direction, or change for the sake of change?

Houston police chief blunt and emotional during Harvey

0

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo known for his blunt speaking-style and his empathetic side.
In a matter of hours, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo had warned looters to stay away from his city and then choked back tears as he announced the death of one of his veteran officers.
It’s that empathetic side mixed with a heavy dose of no-nonsense law-and-order that makes Acevedo so endearing to the communities he has policed over his 30-year career in law enforcement.
The Cuban-born Acevedo, who came to the U. S. with his family in 1968, has been on the job in the nation’s fourth-largest city for less than a year. He is the city’s first Hispanic police chief and regularly answers questions from reporters in Spanish. Before Harvey elevated his national presence, he was known locally for his active role on social media and his blunt speaking style, which he showcased in his threat to looters.
„So word to the wise: Don’t come to Houston, “ he said Tuesday, „because you’re going to be caught. And I guarantee you when you take advantage of people and prey on them in these circumstances, that’s despicable behavior and we’re all going to push hard to make sure you don’t see the sunlight anytime soon.“
Acevedo grew up in California, started in law enforcement in East Los Angeles with the California Highway Patrol and rose to chief of that agency. He arrived in Houston last November after nine years as Austin’s chief.
His tenure in Austin was marked by efforts to strengthen ties with community groups. He faced criticism for several use-of-force incidents, including the 2015 arrest of a black teacher who was thrown to the ground by a white officer and the fatal shooting of an unarmed, naked 17-year-old.
After the shooting, the police union criticized him for speaking at a news conference while standing with groups such as Black Lives Matter.
In another sign that he is not the typical Texas cop, he has been a vocal critic of the so-called anti-sanctuary cities law that expands police powers to question people who have been detained about their immigration status. He was also critical of recently-enacted laws that allow people to openly carry licensed handguns and carry concealed handguns into colleges buildings and dorms.
On Tuesday, Acevedo vividly laid out the details of how his officer, Sgt. Steve Perez, had lost his life trying to get to work when he became trapped in his patrol car in a flooded highway underpass.
His voice cracking, Acevedo chronicled how Perez left home about 4 a.m. Sunday to get to work, even after the sergeant’s wife had urged him to stay home. Harvey’s torrential rains had started the previous evening and continued to rage.
„I’ve got work to do, “ Perez told his wife, according to the chief.
„He has that in his DNA, “ Acevedo said.
„He was one of the sweetest people I’ve met, “ Acevedo said of Perez, whose death Sunday was two days short of his 61st birthday. „I’ve only been here nine months, we’ve got 6,500 employees and I knew who Steve Perez was, because he was a sweet, gentle public servant.“
When Perez failed to show up at the regular roll call Monday, investigators back tracked his movements and narrowed their search to an inundated underpass.
On Tuesday morning, divers recovered Perez in 16 feet of water. Acevedo said he had „the privilege“ of notifying Perez’s family.
Mayor Sylvester Turner credited Perez for making „that extra effort“ to get to work.
„What we can say is Sgt. Perez fulfilled his mission and the Lord called him home. I would dare not say he lost his life in vain, because he didn’t.“
As Turner and Acevedo turned from a podium, they hugged.
