WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump declared a national day of prayer on Sunday as the Gulf Coast reels from Hurricane Harvey, following the lead of Texas, where on Thursday, Gov. Greg Abbott declared Sunday a day of prayer.
„We invite all Americans to join us as we continue to pray for those who have lost family members and friends, and for those who are suffering from this great crisis, “ the president said in the Oval Office, where he met and prayed with pastors from around the country.
Robert Jeffress, senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Dallas, was among the clergy who prayed with Trump in the Oval Office on Friday.
„From the beginning of our nation, Americans have joined together in prayer during times of great need to ask for God’s blessing and God’s guidance. When we look across Texas and Louisiana, we see the American spirit of service embodied by countless men and women, “ Trump said in the Oval Office, flanked by religious leaders.
„Families have given food and shelter to those in need. Houses of worship have organized efforts to clean up communities and repair damaged homes. People have never seen anything quite like this. Individuals of every background are striving for the same goal: to aid and comfort people facing devastating losses.“

One-Time Shelter Dog Helps Search-And-Rescue Efforts in Texas

Several years after being rescued, a one-time shelter dog named Rocket has been tabbed to help with search-and-rescue efforts in Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Several years after being rescued, a one-time shelter dog named Rocket has been tabbed to help with search-and-rescue efforts in Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Once upon a time, Rocket was even slated to be euthanized because his high level of energy made some think he was unadoptable. This pooch’s story is one of heroism and redemption.
Rocket is a border-collie mix. Her handler’s name is Mike Stornetta, and the Hurricane Harvey relief effort marks their second deployment together. Back in 2012, when Rocket lived at the Sacramento SPCA shelter, he failed a number of tests that would have allowed him, officially, to become a search-and-rescue dog.
However, a volunteer with an organization called Search Dog Foundation, saw something special in Rocket. He was tested soon after, and Rocket passed, marking his foray into the world of search and rescue.

Pope: Seeking clarity, I saw psychoanalyst weekly years ago

It wasn’ t specified what the future pontiff wanted to explore.
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis says that when he was 42 he had sessions weekly with a psychoanalyst who was female and Jewish to “clarify some things.”
It wasn’ t specified what the future pontiff wanted to explore. The revelation came in a dozen conversations Francis had with French sociologist Dominique Wolton, writing a soon-to-be-published book.
La Stampa, an Italian daily, quoting some of the conversations on Friday, said Francis went to the analyst’s home. Francis was quoted as saying: “one day, when she was about to die, she called me. Not to receive the sacraments, since she was Jewish, but for a spiritual dialogue.”
Francis added: “She was a good person. For six months she helped me a lot.”
Francis then was a Jesuit official in his native Argentina ruled by military dictatorship.
It is common place for people in Argentina to undergo psychoanalysis. The country boasts by far the most psychologists per capita in the world, with about 198 for every 100,000 inhabitants. The United States ranks fourth with about 33.9 psychologists for every 100,000 inhabitants.

DACA immigrants terrified as President Trump decides their fate

0

Nearly 800,000 young undocumented immigrants are waiting on President Trump’s decision on a program that has protected them from deportation.
Leezia Dhalla is spending her days glued to the news, anxiously waiting for President Trump finally to announce whether he will kill the program that has protected her and nearly 800,000 other young undocumented immigrants from deportation.
Trump is considering ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, a program he inherited from President Barack Obama that allows DREAMERS — immigrants illegally brought to the United States as children — to remain.
After weeks of speculation over the future of the program, Trump told reporters Friday that “We love the DREAMers, “ and will announce a decision „sometime over the weekend … probably Sunday, Saturday. The latest will be Monday.“
That leaves DACA enrollees terrified heading into what should have been an enjoyable Labor Day weekend.
Dhalla, 27, legally entered the U. S. from Canada with her family when she was 6, but they lost their legal status. After being approved for DACA in 2012, Dhalla has been able to buy a home, purchase a car and work at different jobs. Now, with the future of her status unclear, she doesn’t know what to think.
„Many of us are having that moment where our life is flashing before our eyes, “ said Dhalla, a communications associate at FWD.us, an advocacy group founded by technology leaders that include Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates. „I’ m leaving tomorrow to go to Kentucky to my best friend’s wedding. Is this the last wedding in the United States I’ ll get to go to?“

More: 1,850 U. S. leaders to Trump: Don’t kill DREAMer protection program
The DACA program grants two-year stays for undocumented immigrants brought to the United States before their 16th birthday who have attended school or joined the military and have not committed any serious crimes. It also grants them work permits.
Trump faces a Tuesday deadline imposed by Republican leaders in 10 states. The group, led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, has grown impatient with the president’s decision to leave DACA in place through his first seven months in office after vowing to end it during the 2016 presidential campaign.
The group successfully used a lawsuit to block a broader program created by Obama to protect up to 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation. If he doesn’t phase out DACA by Tuesday, they have vowed to sue the administration to kill it.
„The DACA amnesty that President Obama initiated orders (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents to break the law, it also violates two other federal laws, and the constitutional separation of powers, “ Kris Kobach, the secretary of state of Kansas and Trump adviser, told MSNBC on Friday.
Expectations of an imminent decision by Trump have prompted a massive public outcry by DACA supporters, including law professors who say the program is legal, Democratic governors who say DREAMers have helped their states, faith leaders who call DACA a moral imperative, and technology leaders who praise the DREAMers‘ contributions to the U. S. economy.
„If the Trump administration ends DACA, it’ ll be one of the most disgraceful, cruel and heartless decisions in modern American politics, “ said Frank Sharry, executive director of America’s Voice, a group that advocates for immigrants in the U. S.
Even some Republican leaders in Congress are pleading with Trump to hold off on his decision to give them time to pass legislation that would let DREAMers stay permanently.
„These are kids who know no other country, who were brought here by their parents and don’ t know another home, “ House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., told WCLO, a local radio station.
The loudest pleas have come from the DREAMers themselves, who are facing the prospect of losing their deportation protections and their ability to legally work in the U. S.
Oscar Hernandez, a DACA enrollee who was brought to the U. S. from his native Mexico when he was 2, spent the week volunteering to help victims of Hurricane Harvey in Houston. He said the prospect of Trump revoking DACA was a „moral nightmare“ that will only serve to continue the „racist agenda“ that swept Trump into office in November.
Still, Hernandez said DACA recipients are ready to fight for their rights one more time. They have seen their hopes dashed several times when Congress came close, but ultimately failed, to pass a law protecting them. And now, even if Trump ends the program, he said they’re ready to keep on working.
„No matter what happens today or tomorrow or the next day, we continue to fight for our people, “ he said. „When immigrant communities come under attack, we rise up, we fight back and we win.“

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will be available October 17

Microsoft has officially announced that the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will be arriving on October 17.
Microsoft has officially announced that the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will be arriving on October 17.
The update, which will launch roughly six months after the first, contains a number of fresh features in addition to the usual bug fixes and security patches. A new feature called Timeline allows users to go back to a certain date and time and restore running processes from that time. This can make it easier to pick up working where you left off a few hours ago or even several days ago.
OneDrive is also receiving an overhaul to bring Files On-Demand. Folders and files will be able to selectively be downloaded so that local disk space will not be eaten up by rarely used data.
For those wondering about the now obsolete Windows Movie Maker, a new app called Story Remix will serve as a replacement to provide basic multimedia creation and editing. Images and videos can be dropped in, rearranged and easily turned into a suitable output format.
Cloud-based clipboard support is making its way to Windows as copying from a Windows 10 device to a mobile phone or tablet will eventually be possible. This feature will likely work similarly to the Apple Universal Clipboard feature on Mac OS and iOS.
Previously known as Project Neon, Fluent Design – an effort to make styling and themes more unified across apps and interfaces – will be introduced in this year’s Fall Creators Update. All native Microsoft apps will be refreshed with Fluent Design as part of the Creators Update.

Niedawno, będąc w Kijowie, rozmawiałem z prezydentem Poroszenką i ministrem obrony Ukrainy. Oni bardzo jasno stawiają sprawę obaw, że te ćwiczenia są tylko zamaskowaniem ewentualnej agresji wobec Ukrainy. My z kolei bardziej kładziemy nacisk na obawy z ewentualnym pozostawieniem dużych sił Rosyjskich na Białotusi tak, żeby zmienić układ sił między Federacją Rosyjska a Polską i innymi krajami flanki wschodniej – mówił Antoni Macierewicz.

Oil Industry Floods Houston With Donation

0

Oil companies have mobilized supplies and tens millions of dollars in charitable donations to help Gulf Coast residents recover from Hurricane Harvey.
Oil companies have mobilized supplies and tens of millions of dollars in charitable donations to help Gulf Coast residents recover from devastating flooding brought on by Hurricane Harvey.
Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, a major refiner, pledged $1 million to Texans harmed by the storm. The company will give $500,000 to the United Way and $250,000 in matching donations for storm victims, according to a Thursday release.
“Houston and southeast Texas are where we live and work and we are in this together, ” the company’s CEO Mark Lashier said in a statement. “While Chevron Phillips Chemical is a global company – all our thoughts are with Texas this week.”
Houston is one of the oil industry’s major trading hubs, and oil companies are doing what they can to keep their employees and communities safe. Chevron Phillips is only the latest company to pledge money and aid packages to Harvey victims.
So far, oil and gas companies have mobilized $23 million for Texans and Louisianans caught in Harvey’s wake, according to tweets and public statements compiled by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
That’s in addition to industry workers helping to clear rubble and clean up wrecked neighborhoods.
“Our thoughts are with all of those who are dealing with the impact of this unprecedented natural disaster, ” ConocoPhillips CEO Ryan Phillips said in a statement announcing $5 million in donations to the American Red Cross and the United Way of Greater Houston.
ExxonMobil mobilized $9.5 million for hurricane victims, and crews working for a joint project with a Saudi Arabian chemical company were out in force to help clean up after the storm hit. Oklahoma-based Marathon Petroleum employees put together an aid package of supplies for Houston.
“In the community, Shell staff have helped out so many in need that people are flagging down anybody wearing the company pecten symbol to say ‘thank you, ” Shell CEO Ben van Beurden wrote in a LinkedIn article on the storm.
Shell announced $1 million to the American Red Cross, which is helping Harvey victims by bringing them food, medicine and other necessities. Red Cross operates shelters for Houstonians who lost their homes to the storm and subsequent flooding.
Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 storm in late August, forcing refineries, offshore drilling rigs and pipelines to shut. About 22 percent of the U. S.’s oil refining capacity was taken offline.
Refinery closures have caused a gasoline shortage and a spike in prices at the pump. More than 3 million barrels a day worth of refined fuels production was shut in to weather the storm.
Shell had to shut down its refinery near Deer Park, Texas as Harvey approached. Saudi Aramco’s Motive refinery near Port Arthur could be offline for weeks — it’s the largest refinery in the U. S.
Refinery shutdowns didn’ t just affect gas prices, they also caused air pollutants and other chemicals to be released. Refineries flare chemicals when starting up and shutting down
Exxon shut down two refineries in southeastern Texas to protect against Harvey, including the Baytown refinery, the second-largest in the country. Both facilities reportedly released air pollutants.
The company was able to “stabilize” pollution leaks at its Beaumont refinery, according to The Texas Tribune .
The exact amount of pollution releases are unknown since environmental regulators shut down air pollution monitors in the area to keep them from getting damaged. Though Texas officials said initial estimates tend to be high.

An Apple iPhone 8 by any other name, but what will it really be called?

0

Site says Apple iPhone 8 won’t be named the Apple iPhone 8, Alexa gets a Dash of earbud integration, Nintendo can’t outplay the legal system.
iPhone 8 Deluxe Turbo Edition?
We’ re in the home stretch for Apple’s big dog and pony show for the next batch of iPhones, and Apple’s invites to the party say it’ ll be the first event in the “Steve Jobs Theater” on the new “spaceship” campus. Crews are still putting the finishing touches on the multi-billion-dollar torus known as Apple Park, and, we hope at least, Apple has finally buttoned up the new iPhone. Which will be called, well… we’ re not really sure.
Prognosticators have said the new device could be called the iPhone 8, the iPhone 10, or the iPhone Edition. But what will the other iPhones Apple is expected to reveal be called? 9to5Mac is saying their reliable sources claim the phones previously known as the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus will get a promotion and be called iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, with the new OLED halo phone getting tagged as the iPhone Edition, much like the $10,000 dollar Apple Watch Edition when it debuted.
And let’s not forget the “Steve Edition” of the iPhone, better known as the SE, which may get a bump in memory capacity to 128gb of memory while retaining the classic design introduced by Jobs just before he passed away in 2011. We’ ll know who gets named what on September 12 th.
Alexa, run my life
Integrating an AI bot into a tech device is all the rage at present, and now, a popular maker of high-end earbuds is welcoming Alexa to the fold.
Bragi, makers of the full-on wireless The Dash and Dash Pro earbuds, say a future software update will bring Amazon’s smarthome AI bot Alexa into service for users. Apple and Google-phone users could already access Siri and Google Assistant, but adding Alexa to the mix opens up a possibly much wider information – and shopping – portal. Forget to order that thing you need before leaving on a trip? Just ask Alexa to do it for you while you wait in line at the airport.
That sounds maybe a bit too convenient, and god help you if you walk into a Whole Foods with the things on. Bragi says Alexa access will arrive with an update in October.
Prize level: $10 million
Nintendo just lost a court battle with a company that says the video game console maker infringed on its patent for tech used in those ubiquitous controllers, and the court told Nintendo to pay $10 million to the company, known as iLife. iLife had been asking for $144 million, so Nintendo kind of got off easy if you ask us. But no one is, and Nintendo is appealing, claiming they did not infringe on the patents and that the patents were “invalid.”
The original lawsuit was filed in 2014, so we’ ll have to see how the appeal shakes out.
