The Truth About that McDonald's Hot Coffee Lawsuit, Overpopulation Explained, and the Original Moonwalkers

0

NewsHubIn this first Brain Buffet of the new year, we’re busting myths and inspiring you to do your best. First, the truth about that infamous McDonald’s hot coffee lawsuit, and some facts about human overpopulation. Then watch some serious focus at work, see an artist at craft, and more.
Welcome to Lifehacker’s Monday Brain Buffet , a series where we round up interesting, informative, and thought-provoking podcasts, interviews, articles, and other media that will teach you something new, inspire you, and hopefully start your week off on the right foot.
Every now and again you have the opportunity to watch someone who moves with such incredible focus, deliberate action, and intent that it’s a joy to watch them work, let alone do anything at all, and this video was exactly that for me.
If you’re not familiar with Simon and Martina of Eat Your Sushi (formerly Eat Your Kimchi), they’re always fun and funny to watch, and their videos are joy, but this one—along with some of their others recently—was a special joy to watch. Partially because you get to watch them enjoy some absolutely incredible sushi that’s difficult to describe, but for me, mostly because of Saito, the owner of Sushi Saito, a 3 Michelin Star restaurant.
It’s not just his food that I find entrancing—it’s the way he works. It’s absolutely inspiring, and he makes me want to bring even a fraction of the deliberate, focused work that he does to my own craft every single day. Click play and enjoy—and perhaps most importantly, be inspired. [ via Simon and Martina (YouTube) ]
You probably hear when a new, special postage stamp is released, or when a historic or other noteworthy figure gets their own stamp, but how does the process happen? Well, Antonio Alcalá, one of four art directors for the US Postal Service, explains everything in this video. He explains how difficult it can be working with such a small canvas, but also how those constraints can turn into some really beautiful work at the same time. Oh, and don’t worry, there are plenty of beautiful examples through the whole video. [ via AARP (YouTube) , thanks Kottke! ]
I could share every single Kurzgesagt video in these and never get tired, but this one was especially good—mostly because as our science fiction and dystopian views of the world in the future look more and more bleak, it’s easy to say that overpopulation will be the cause of all of humanity’s ills, but the truth may be more complex.
After all, we have a lot of problems in front of us as a species on Earth, but as long as current trends continue (that is, the number of people living in absolute poverty around the globe has never been lower, more developing and developed nations are improving their quality of life for average citizens, and more and better medical care is available to more people around the globe), the population spike that we’ve seen over the past several decades will round off and flatten back out. It’s a bit more inspiring and data driven, and a breath of fresh air—at least in one regard. Just because we won’t absolutely crowd the planet doesn’t mean we don’t have other problems to face and fix. [ via Kurzgesagt (YouTube) ]
You know the old “coffee cups have to be labeled that the contents are hot because some lady burned herself” complaint? You know, the one that extends to “yeah companies have to label products for stupid people because someone somewhere tried to do something dumb with it?” That, on some level, may be true because most companies want nothing to do with the liability that comes with someone using a product in a way it wasn’t designed to function, but the infamous McDonald’s coffee lawsuit wasn’t that at all—even though it’s often referred to as the originator of the whole problem.
I’ve seen this conversation go around more often than I used to, and I’m actually a bit sad that this myth has persisted for so long. I ran into this as a case study in graduate school, one about how popular conception surrounding a trial can run wildly out of control, and how constant reinforcement of a one side of a story and completely erase the truth. The video above may be from College Humor, but it’s spot on, and like some of the best satire, speaks truth in a humorous and entertaining way to a constant stream of disinformation. [ via College Humor (YouTube) , thanks Kottke !]
Another tidbit from history—many people remember Michael Jackson for the Moonwalk, a dance move most popularly associated with him, but few people know the much older tap dancers and jazz dancers that inspired him to perform it. This video is a rundown of some of them, including the one and only Bill Bailey (whose Wikipedia article is painfully thin,) who essentially invented the move on stage at the Apollo Theatre in 1955 , although then he called it the “Backslide.” (Hit that link for a video of Bailey performing live.)
There’s this video and more over at this piece at Boing , and they’re all worth watching. Hit play, be inspired, and have a great first week of the new year. [ via broallen25 (YouTube) , thanks Boing ! ]

China Says It Won’t Allow Hong Kong to be Used as ‘Subversion Base’

0

NewsHubIn its latest decree against Hong Kong’s pro-independent protestors, Beijing has warned that it will not allow anyone to use the semi-autonomous city as a base for subversion activities against mainland China.
Like Us on Facebook
The dire warning was issued by Zhang Xiaoming, the head of China’s Liaison Office in Hong Kong, in an interview to state television broadcaster on late Sunday.
„As far as Hong Kong is concerned, nobody is permitted do anything in any form that damage the country’s sovereignty and security, they are not allowed to challenge the central government’s authority or that of Hong Kong’s,“ Zhang said.
„They are not allowed to use Hong Kong for infiltration subversion activities against the mainland to damage its social and political stability. “
Meanwhile, another top Hong Kong official categorically stated in a recent interview to a pro-Chinese magazine that there „was no scope for independence for the former British colony under one country, two systems. “
Over the last few months, the Chinese government has been adopting aggressive policies against its semi-autonomous region, apparently in a bid to quell Hong Kong’s latest democracy wave. The region erupted into widespread protest following the oath-taking ceremony controversy on Oct. 20.
The region’s two pro-independent lawmakers, Baggio Leung and Yau Wai-ching, allegedly indulged in anti-Chinese activities during the oath taking ceremony .
China’s top legislative body later interpreted Hong Kong’s mini constitution in order to bar the two lawmakers from assuming office. This was only the second time that Beijing interpreted the semi-autonomous city’s basic constitution. The first constitutional amendment happened in 2014, when the city was rocked by similar pro-independence movement.

Twitter’s China Head Kathy Chen Quits After 8 Months

0

NewsHubTwitter continues to face issues as its China head announced her departure after assuming the position only eight months earlier. The company’s managing director in Greater China, Kathy Chen, tweeted her decision through 12 messages on the social media site.
Like Us on Facebook
Chen stated that it was the „right time“ for her to depart as the Twitter APAC team is now on the firm ground, adding that she will „take some time off to recharge, study about different cultures and then pursue more international business opportunities. “
Twitter is officially banned in China and the company operates through its office in Hong Kong. The company uses Hong Kong base to focus on Chinese advertisers and collaborates with developers as well. The office in Hong Kong was opened in 2015.
Chen’s appointment was as controversial as her departure. Her previous links to the People’s Liberation Army and Computer Associates did not go down well with free speech activists. In her departure tweets, she said that the Great China has emerged as one of the fastest growing revenue markets for Twitter in Asia Pacific region.
Chen also claimed that the advertiser base for the microblogging site increased nearly 400 percent over the past 2 years. She was responsible for developing strategies for attracting more advertisement revenue from Chinese businesses.
Twitter has seen exodus of its several top executives in the recent past. Among the top employees who left were the company’s chief technology officer Adam Messinger, chief operating office Adam Bain, global media head Katie Stanton, engineering executive Alex Roetter, and human resources head Brian Schipper.

Daughter of South Korea's 'Rasputin' arrested in Denmark

0

NewsHubCOPENHAGEN: The daughter of Choi Soon-sil, the woman at the centre of a corruption scandal that led to the impeachment of South Korea’s president, has been arrested in Denmark after months in hiding, Danish police said on Monday (Jan 2).
Chung Yoo-ra, the 20-year-old daughter of the woman dubbed South Korea’s „Rasputin“, is one of the figures in the influence-peddling scandal that sparked massive street protests demanding the removal of President Park Geun-hye.
After a tip-off from a South Korean journalist, Chung was arrested Sunday night in the northern Danish town of Aalborg for overstaying her visa, Danish police said in a statement.
The Aalborg district court ruled that Chung would be detained for four weeks while it was decided whether she would be extradited to South Korea.
During the court hearing she denied any wrongdoing and said that her mother on three different occasions had simply shown her „some documents“ that she had signed, according to Danish news agency Ritzau.
Chung had „tearfully“ asked the court not to detain her, saying she was worried about her 19-month-old son who was staying with a nanny, it said.
The equestrian, who has reportedly bought horses and trained in Denmark in the past, told police that she was in the country due to her involvement in the sport.
She was aware that South Korean authorities wanted to talk to her, they said.
Police later transferred the case to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which handles extradition requests from other countries.
„We are already in dialogue with the South Korean Ministry of Justice, and we have asked them to send a formal extradition request, which will then be assessed,“ deputy director Mohammad Ahsan said in a statement.
Choi, a secret confidante of Park, is accused of using her ties with the president to force top firms including Samsung to „donate“ nearly US$70 million (€67 million) to non-profit foundations which Choi then used as her personal ATMs.
She is also accused of using her influence to secure her daughter’s admission to an elite Seoul university, with a state probe revealing the school had admitted Chung at the expense of other candidates with better qualifications.
The revelation touched a raw nerve in education-obsessed South Korea and prosecutors sought to question Chung over her admission to Ewha Women’s University in 2014.
Park stands accused of colluding with Choi to extract money from the firms and also of letting her meddle in state affairs including nominating top officials. The president denies all charges against her.
Parliament voted on December 9 to impeach Park over the scandal and her executive powers have been handed to an acting president, Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn.
The impeachment case is being considered by the Constitutional Court, which has up to six months to reach a ruling.
Hundreds of thousands of South Koreans have joined weekly protests calling for Park’s immediate departure from office.
If the impeachment is confirmed, a presidential election will have to be held within 60 days.
Choi, daughter of a controversial religious figure who was close to Park until his death in 1994, is awaiting trial on charges including coercion and abuse of power.
Several professors at Ewha Women’s University, including a former school president, have been investigated for giving Chung preferential treatment.
One professor was arrested over the weekend for allegedly giving Chung a good grade for a class she never attended and for forcing his teaching assistants to forge exam records for her.
Top Samsung managers were also investigated as part of the scandal, following accusations the firm indirectly bankrolled Chung’s equestrian training in Germany in a bid to curry favour.

Analysts: North Korea not bluffing on ICBM launch

0

NewsHubNorth Korea worked through 2016 on developing components for an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), making the isolated nation’s claim that it is close to a test-launch plausible, weapons experts say.
Once fully developed, a North Korean ICBM could threaten the continental United States about 9,000km away.
Pyongyang’s state media regularly threatens the US with a nuclear strike, but before 2016 the North had been assumed to be a long way from being capable of doing so.
„The bottom line is Pyongyang is much further along in their missile development than most people realise,“ said Melissa Hanham, a senior research associate at the US-based Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, California.
Kim Jong-un says close to testing long-range missile
North Korea has been testing rocket engines and heat-shields for an ICBM while developing the technology to guide a missile after re-entry into the atmosphere following a lift-off, the experts said on Monday.
While Pyongyang is close to a test, it is likely to take some years to perfect the weapon.
Hanham said the North’s test in April of a large liquid-fuel engine that could propel an ICBM was a major development.
„The liquid engine test was astounding,“ Hanham said. „For years we knew that North Korea had a Soviet R-27 missile engine design. They re-engineered the design of that engine to double its propulsion. “
North Korea has said it is capable of mounting a nuclear warhead on a ballistic missile, but its claims to be able to miniaturise a nuclear device have never been independently verified.
The isolated nation has achieved this progress despite UN Security Council imposed sanctions for its nuclear tests and long-range rocket launches dating back to 2006. The sanctions ban arms trade and money flows that can fund the country’s arms programme.
North Korea has enough uranium for six bombs a year and much of what it needs for its nuclear and missile programmes relies on Soviet-era design and technology. Labour is virtually free.
It can produce much of its missile parts domestically and invested heavily in its missile development infrastructure last year, funded by small arms sales and by taxing wealthy traders in its unofficial market economy.
Throughout the year, North Korean state media showed images of numerous missile component tests, some of which revealed close-up details of engines and heat shields designed to protect a rocket upon re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere.
The propaganda offensive may have revealed some military secrets, but it may have also been a bid to silence outside analysts, many of whom had remained sceptical of the North’s missile programme.
„They’re answering the public criticisms of US experts,“ said Joshua Pollack, editor of the US-based Nonproliferation Review. „A lot of people had questioned whether they had a working ICBM-class heat shield. So they showed us. “
Despite the research, Pyongyang has experienced considerable difficulties getting its intermediate-range Musudan missile, designed to fly about 3,000km, off the ground. It succeeded just once in eight attempted launches last year.
North Korea has fired long-range rockets in the past, but has characterised those launches as peaceful and designed to put an object into space.
Still, the South Korean defense ministry believes the three-stage Kwangmyongsong rocket used by Pyongyang to put a satellite in space last February already has a potential range of 12,000km if it were re-engineered.
Doing so would require mastering safer „cold-launch“ technology, and perfecting the ability of a rocket to re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere without breaking up.
„North Korea is working hard to develop cold-launch technology and atmospheric re-entry, but South Korea and the US will have to assess further exactly which level of development they have reached,“ South Korean defence ministry official Roh Jae-cheon told a briefing on Monday.
North Korea pledges ‚tough‘ response to UN sanctions
North Korea began stepping up its missile development in March 2016, Roh said, but added there were no „unusual signs“ related to test preparations, according to the South Korean military.
That same month, Kim Jong-un was photographed looking at a small, ball-like object that North Korean state news agency KCNA said was a miniaturised nuclear warhead – the device North Korea would need to fulfill its ICBM threat.
„2016 marked the year North Korea truly ramped up their WMD [Weapons of Mass Destruction] programme,“ Hanham said.
„I think we’re going to see a [ICBM] flight test in 2017. “

Growth in China's factories, services slow down in December: PMI

0

NewsHubChina’s manufacturing sector expanded for a fifth month in December, but growth slowed a touch more than expected in a sign that government measures to rein in soaring asset prices are starting to have a knock-on effect on the broader economy.
The official Purchasing Managers‘ Index (PMI) stood at 51.4 in December compared with 51.7 in November. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion on a monthly basis while one below 50 suggests a contraction. December’s reading was slightly below the forecast in a Reuters poll for 51.5.
Rolls of steel are stacked inside the China Steel Corporation factory, in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan. Reuters
A housing boom in the second half of 2016 and a government spending spree on infrastructure have helped boost prices for commodities from cement to steel, giving the manufacturing sector a much-needed lift. But the government is cracking down on speculative property buying, and signals from policymakers that more will be done to contain asset bubbles and rising debt – even at the expense of slower growth – means extra stimulus measures could be limited.
„Today’s PMI figures suggest that the change of policy tone has taken its toll, as the authorities are seriously concerned about the asset bubbles,“ said Zhou Hao, senior economist at Commerzbank.
Factory output slowed in December, with the sub-index hitting 53.3 compared with 53.9 the previous month. Total new orders were flat at 53.2, logging the same as in November, while new export orders fell to 50.1 from 50.3. Jobs were again lost, with the employment sub-index sitting at 48.9, compared to 49.2 in November, as the country pledged to cut excess capacity over a range of industries. A sub-index for smaller firms fell, and performance for larger companies also worsened.

The Markit/Caixin PMI, a private gauge of manufacturing activity which focuses more on small and mid-sized firms, is due on January 3. Analysts expect it to fall to 50.7 from the previous month’s reading of 50.9.
A separate reading on the services sector showed the pace of growth slowed in December, Sunday’s data showed. The official non-manufacturing Purchasing Managers‘ Index (PMI) stood at 54.5 in December, down from 54.7 in November, but well above the 50-point mark.
China is counting on growth in services – which account for more than half of gross domestic product – to offset persistent softness in exports that is dragging on the economy. Private investment has also remained stubbornly weak. But GDP still looks set to hit Beijing’s 2016 growth target of 6.5 to 7 percent, after expanding 6.7 percent for each of the first three quarters.

The secret to a better pasta? Bake it, don't cook it ‹ Japan Today

0

NewsHubNEW YORK —
If there’s anything more comforting than boiled pasta in a sauce, it’s got to be baked pasta in a sauce. The baking adds a crispy crust that is such a delicious contrast to the tender goodness of the dish.
The challenge is how to get the pasta to turn out just right. Most baked pasta recipes instruct you to boil the noodles until cooked halfway before baking them. This allows the pasta to finish cooking in the oven as it bathes in the sauce. But this method has challenges. If you boil the noodles more than halfway, they’ll be overcooked by the time you pull the finished dish out of the oven. I find it hard to get the precooking time right.
And precooking the pasta, even halfway, takes work and dirties a large pot and colander. Then again, if you don’t precook the pasta and instead add it dry to the sauce for baking, it will take much longer to become tender in the oven, even as it absorbs all the liquid in the sauce. Dry pasta needs to hydrate.
So what’s a home cook to do? Use my simple no-cook method of precooking the pasta. Just soak the pasta in warm salted water before adding it to the other ingredients and sliding the mixture into the oven. Pre-soaking is a way to begin hydrating the pasta and washing away some of its starch, even as the salt in the water pre-seasons the pasta.
Yes, you’ll dirty a bowl, but given that that’s the same vessel in which you’ll combine all the dish’s ingredients, it’s the only bowl you’ll need. The soak requires 45 minutes, but it’s hands-off time, freeing you to prep the rest of the ingredients. Then it takes no time at all to assemble the dish and pop it into the oven.
Just 20 or so minutes later you can collect your reward: deeply flavored baked pasta, creamy on the bottom and crispy on top. Add a salad and some crusty bread and be happy.
BAKED PENNE WITH PROSCIUTTO AND FONTINA
Start to finish: 1 hour 15 minutes (20 minutes active)
Servings: 6
450 grams penne pasta
Salt
Butter, for coating the baking pan
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 cup heavy cream
2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1 cup crushed tomatoes
1 to 2 teaspoons red pepper flakes, to taste (optional)
1 1/2 ounces finely grated Parmesan cheese
115 grams coarsely grated fontina cheese
115 grams thinly sliced prosciutto, chopped
In a large bowl, combine the pasta with enough lukewarm, well-salted water to cover. Let stand for 45 minutes.
Heat the oven to 450 F. Lightly butter a shallow baking dish (12-cup capacity with 2 to 2 1/2-inch sides).
Drain the pasta and set aside. In the same bowl, combine all remaining ingredients, stirring well. Add the pasta, toss to combine, then season with a pinch of salt. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, pressing it down evenly. Bake on the oven’s middle shelf until bubbly and browned, 20 to 22 minutes.

Baghdad suicide car bomb blast kills 32 ‹ Japan Today

0

NewsHubBAGHDAD —
A suicide car bomb attack in a densely-populated neighborhood of Baghdad on Monday killed at least 32 people and left dozens wounded, police and hospital officials said.
Many of the victims were daily laborers waiting for jobs at an intersection in Sadr City, a sprawling majority Shiite neighborhood in the northeast of the capital that has been repeatedly targeted.
Pictures posted on social media shortly after the explosion showed a huge plume of black smoke billowing into the sky and seriously injured people being evacuated.
According to a police colonel, at least 32 people were killed and 61 wounded in the blast, the second major attack in Baghdad in three days.
At least 27 people were killed by twin explosions in a busy market area in central Baghdad on Saturday, in what was the deadliest such attack in the Iraqi capital in two months.
There was no immediate claim for Monday’s suicide blast but the Islamic State jihadist group has claimed all such attacks recently, including the double bombing on New Year’s Eve.
The caliphate IS proclaimed in 2014 is shrinking steadily and jihadist fighters are defending Mosul, their last major urban stronghold in Iraq.
Observers have voiced fears that the group, once it definitively loses its status as a land-holding force, could increasingly revert to targeting civilians in Iraq’s cities.

Man arrested over murder of acquaintance on mountain road ‹ Japan Today

NewsHubOKAYAMA —
Police in Tamano, Okayama Prefecture, said Monday they have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of fatally stabbing a 38-year-old man on a mountain road on Sunday.
According to police, a man called 119 at around 4 p.m. Sunday, saying he had stabbed someone and gave the location. Fuji TV reported that police rushed to the site and found the victim, Maku Kohara, lying on the road, bleeding from stab wounds to his back and thigh.
