Stars remember Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher

0

NewsHubFriends and family of screen icon Debbie Reynolds and „Star Wars“ legend Carrie Fisher gathered Thursday to pay tribute to the beloved celebrity mother and daughter, who died one day apart.
Meryl Streep, Holly Hunter, Ellen Barkin and Ed Begley Jr were among the stars who made their way to the luxury Beverly Hills compound where Fisher and Reynolds lived as neighbors until their deaths just after Christmas.
The pair are expected to be interred side by side among many other stars of screen and stage in the Hollywood Hills on Friday.
Fisher is believed to have been cremated already, although some of her ashes are expected to be buried alongside her mother.
Reynolds, who won moviegoers‘ hearts as a star of „Singin‘ in the Rain,“ died on Wednesday last week, a day after Fisher.
The 84-year-old suffered a stroke at the Beverly Hills property as she was making funeral arrangements for Fisher, who had suffered a heart attack.
Reynolds’s son Todd Fisher — Carrie’s brother — told ABC’s „20/20“ show after their deaths that his mother had been devastated not to get the chance to see the „Star Wars“ actress one last time.
„She expressed how much she loved my sister. She then said she really wanted to be with Carrie, in those precise words. And within 15 minutes from that conversation, she faded out. Within 30 minutes, she technically was gone,“ he said.
Fisher, who catapulted to worldwide stardom as rebel warrior Princess Leia in the original „Star Wars“ trilogy, died in Los Angeles four days after suffering a heart attack on a transatlantic flight. She was 60.
The family is believed to be planning a future public memorial service for Fisher and Reynolds, possibly featuring stars such as Streep — who starred in the film „Postcards from the Edge,“ which was based on Fisher’s 1987 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name.
Other celebrities laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park include Bette Davis, Reynolds’s onscreen mother in „A Catered Affair“ (1956), and Reynolds’s close friend Liberace.
Silent film star Buster Keaton, Oscar-winning Rod Steiger and David Carradine, the star of „Kung Fu“ and Quentin Tarantino’s „Kill Bill“ films, are also buried there.

Conscious Dance Revives Spirits in the Desert | An American Mensch in Argentina

Conscious Dance Revives Spirits in the Desert
When Adam checked in with his representative at 24/7 Bail Bond for his monthly report, the agent was surprised to learn that Adam had visited Burning Man in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert and learned conscious dance.
Rhythmwave , one of hundreds of theme camps at Burning Man , is built on „conscious dance“ founded in 1977 by Gabrielle Roth. When Roth died in 2012, she left more than 250 certified teachers. One of those teachers established a group in Las Vegas, and The Las Vegas affiliate of the Sacred Dance Guild meets in the Fellowship Hall of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in town.
Conscious Dance at Burning Man
An expansive dance floor built of bamboo lies in the middle of the desert in Nevada. The canvas canopy flutters in the wind, and bright ensigns speak to the passersby, encouraging them to join.
All ages of people as well as a variety off contours, and genders merge in the cauldron of dancing. Grown men weep with openness as women lament and stomp their feet. While the music turns from pounding sounds into lyrical themes, bodies combine and emotions line up. A faint voice sings into the mic, „Welcome to Rhythmwave. “
Conscious dancing is more acceptable. Morning dance experiences are increasing in urban places and can even be seen in New York. Jewish communities incorporating conscious dance from Staten Island to San Francisco; optional Shabbat and services are including dancing and movement. Dancing has long been central to religious tradition. Conscious dance has refreshed it for a current generation, and many are finding it a severely required medication spiritual restoration.
As dancing has perpetually been spiritual, it isn’t unusual that conscious dancing has progressed into regular Jewish practice. Rabbi Minnen recently entertained several „Ecstatic Mincha“ assemblies on Shabbat midday events in Brooklyn and Manhattan. In Las Vegas, two adherents created SHUL, a morning service that weaves classical Hebrew prayers and niggunim with dance. „Dancing is a vital part in emerging Jewish neighborhoods,“ Rosen said, „as it gives a path for anyone who is not familiar with Jewish rites. “
Dance teacher Ali Schechter, originator of Full Circle Dance, leads „Move into Shabbat,“ a Friday evening conscious dance party in Las Vegas. She facilitates imaginative movement rites for Jewish Renewal congregations as the experiences involved a Yom Kippur gathering and a conscious dance reception as well as Havdalah at Romemu’s annual retreat.
Dance has always been an important part of Jewish worship. In the Torah, Miriam the prophet guides the ladies in dancing and verse with timbrels after the departure from Egypt and traversing the Red Sea.
Recently, at Las Vegas‘ conscious dance evening, a Friday night experience featured a „potluck“ of rituals led by attendees. People joined hands, circled the tables and shift their feet as their bodies swayed.
Everyone laughed, cried and experienced the ultimate embodiment of joy. Through dance, prayer is made real, and the dance became the essence of Shabbat and joy even when it is hard to feel joy.
In dance our spirits are set free.

‘Princess Mononoke’ Turns 20: 10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Animated Classic (Photos)

0

NewsHubTwenty years ago, Hayao Miyazaki finished what was supposed to be his final movie: a dark, violent, yet beautiful fantasy about the growing conflict between man and nature. Instead, it was acclaimed as an anime masterpiece and ushered in a new era for the legendary animator that included films like “Spirited Away” and “Ponyo.” As it returns to theaters for a special 20th anniversary engagement, here are some things you might not have known about Miyazaki’s supernatural war epic.
According to Studio Ghibli’s making-of documentary, Miyazaki’s original concept for “Princess Mononoke” was created in 1980 and involved a samurai story with a warrior’s daughter and a mountain cat that gains supernatural powers. By the mid 90s, however, Miyazaki felt the samurai narrative was too rigid and no longer relevant to contemporary Japan, causing him to overhaul the story.
The Japanese title of the film is “Mononoke-Hime,” with Hime meaning “princess.” There is no direct translation for “Mononoke,” which in this case roughly translates to a vengeful monster or spirit. Rather than make a complete change, Miramax decided to keep “Mononoke” in the title for the North American release.
Harvey Weinstein, who was then in charge of Miramax, had planned to recut “Princess Mononoke,” something that Miyazaki refused to allow after one of his earlier films got 30 minutes removed from the American release. In response, Miyazaki and Ghibli sent a katana to Miramax with a note reading “No cuts.”
Irontown, the village attacked by the Forest Spirit, was inspired by John Ford westerns like “Stagecoach” and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.” Miyazaki designed Irontown to feel like a settlement created by social outcasts much like the ones in classic westerns while basing the culture on traditional Japanese customs.
As for the iron making that pollutes San’s forests and drives Irontown’s economy, Miyazaki took inspiration from the blacksmiths he lived close to as a child. In the making-of documentary, Miyazaki said he enjoyed watching the process of forging iron and tried to recreate every step in “Mononoke” while also showing the damage mining for raw iron did to Japan’s environment.
With a budget of $23.5 million USD (approx. $35M in today’s money), “Princess Mononoke” was the most expensive anime ever made at the time of release, and Miyazaki said during production that he would not be surprise if it bombed. Instead, the film set a new domestic box office record in Japan and, along with “Titanic,” is one of only two films released before 2000 that are still in Japan’s Top 10 grossing films.
The forest surrounding Irontown is heavily based on the Shiratani Ravine, a nature preserve on Yakishima Island, located off the southernmost tip of Japan. Since the release of “Mononoke,” anime fans have traveled to the ravine to visit San’s forest, leaving behind little kodama statues in the trees.
Prior to “Mononoke,” Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli had been known for family films like “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and “My Neighbor Totoro.” To make sure parents understood that “Mononoke” was a much different film, Ghibli aired commercials that featured some of the most violent scenes, including explosions and severed limbs.
At 136 minutes and over 144,000 animation cels, “Princess Mononoke” ranks in the top ten longest running animated films ever made. Despite this, Miyazaki personally reviewed and corrected all the key frames in the movie. It is estimated that he drew or corrected approximately 80,000 cels.
The wolf goddess Moro is voiced in the English dub by “X-Files” star Gillian Anderson, but is voiced by a male actor, Akihiro Miwa, in the Japanese version.

Ford, Toyota Form Consortium to Advance in-Vehicle Apps

0

NewsHubLAS VEGAS, Nevada , January 5, 2017 (ENS) – Ford and Toyota are forming a nonprofit organization to manage an open source software platform that will give consumers more options in how they connect and control their smartphone apps on the road. The two automakers announced the new SmartDeviceLink Consortium Tuesday at the first media day of the Consumer Electronics Show, or CES.
The consortium has attracted its first automaker members: Mazda, PSA Group, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. and Suzuki Motor Corporation.
Elektrobit, Luxoft, and Xevo joined as the first supplier members. Harman, Panasonic, Pioneer and QNX have signed Letters of Intent to join.
SmartDeviceLink is a standard set of protocols and messages that connect applications on a smartphone to a vehicle head unit. The core component is the software that automakers embed in their vehicle head units.
The open source SDL software allows smartphone app developers to seamlessly integrate their app functions with in-vehicle technology such as the vehicle display screen, steering wheel controls and voice recognition.
With this new level of integration, drivers can enjoy their favorite apps on the road in an enhanced, user-friendly way.
Livio, a Ford subsidiary, will manage the open source project and provide guidance to the SmartDeviceLink Consortium and its members.
SmartDeviceLink technology is based on Ford’s contribution of its AppLink™ software to the open source community in 2013. Ford AppLink software is currently available on more than five million vehicles globally.
Popular apps such as Pandora, Spotify, iHeartRadio, AccuWeather and others are available now to Ford AppLink users.
“Encouraging innovation is at the center of Ford’s decision to create SmartDeviceLink, and this consortium is a major step toward that goal,” said Doug VanDagens, global director, Ford Connected Vehicle and Services, and a board member of the consortium.
“Consumers will win with new, innovative app experiences from increased collaboration and developer engagement,” VanDagens said.
For instance, Toyota plans to commercialize a GPS vehicle tracking telematics system using SmartDeviceLink software around 2018.
Shigeki Tomoyama, president of Toyota’s Connected Company, said, “Connectivity between smartphones and the vehicle interface is one of the most important connected services. Using SmartDeviceLink, we can provide this service to our customers in a safe and secure manner. We are excited to collaborate with many auto manufacturers and suppliers who share our view.”
The open source platform gives automakers and suppliers a uniform standard for integrating apps. Developers can focus on creating the best experience for customers by integrating one linking solution for use by all participating automakers.
“We first set out to develop a way for Ford customers to access and control their favorite smartphone apps using voice commands,” said Don Butler, executive director, Ford Connected Vehicle and Services. “Now, seeing how our innovative software is serving new industry partners is very rewarding. We look forward to innovating together to keep pace with the needs and wants of consumers around the world.”
Industry-wide adoption of SmartDeviceLink is expected to give app developers a broad audience as their innovations could be applied to millions of vehicles worldwide.

A premonition, a dream: Church slaying victims remembered

0

NewsHubJanuary 5, 2017
CHARLESTON, S. C. — One by one, friends and family members walked up to the witness stand and testified about the nine black church members gunned down during a Bible study in Charleston on June 17, 2015. They described personalities, future plans and final conversations.
The testimony came during the sentencing phase of Dylann Roof’s death penalty trial. The same jury that convicted the 22-year-old white man of hate crimes and other charges will decide whether to sentence him to life in prison or death. Here are highlights from the testimony Wednesday and Thursday.
A PREMONITION AND A DREAM
Myra Thompson seemed to know something would happen to her. A month before the shootings, daughter Denise Quarles says her mother talked about being confident she’d raised her children with strong morals that would serve them after her death. She also made it clear what she wanted, and didn’t want, for her funeral: Use red nail polish and don’t let the funeral home dye her hair gray or cake-on the makeup.
On the night of the shooting, Quarles said she woke suddenly after a dream about watching her mother drown and hearing a voice saying her mother was gone. Quarles picked up her phone, checked Facebook and learned of the shooting – and her mother’s likely fate.
„I just feel like that was God who spoke to me,“ she said. „That’s why I know where my mom is. She’s in heaven, with everybody else. She’s fine. “
‚DADDY’S DEAD?‘
Jennifer Pinckney huddled under a desk with her 6-year-old daughter, her hand clasped over the girl’s mouth to keep her quiet, as Roof opened fire.
Not knowing for certain if the danger had passed, Pinckney dialed 911 and breathlessly told an operator she had heard shots inside the church.
„I think there’s been a shooting. I’m in the closet, under a desk,“ Pinckney told the operator. „Please hurry. “
On the call, Pinckney tries to comfort her daughter Malana, who had been watching cartoons in her father’s office as he participated in Bible study.
„Daddy’s dead? “ Malana says.
„No, baby, no,“ the mother says. But at that moment, Pinckney said she knew her husband, church pastor Clementa Pinckney, had been killed.
A FUTURE IN THE CHURCH
The Rev. Anthony Thompson said his wife, Myra, was a dedicated person of faith who did her best to enjoy life.
Thompson cried as he described a conversation with his wife about their future plans to move and pursue studies and careers in the church.
„She was my world, and she was gone,“ he said. „I’m just glad to know she’s somewhere… where somebody can take care of her better than I ever could. “
DEVOTED FRIEND
Sharonda Coleman-Singleton was a high school track coach. But the ministry was her calling. She was able to relate to a room full of people like they were talking one-on-one.
„She wanted to teach you,“ said friend Rita Whidbee.
Coleman-Singleton’s daughter told jurors her mother would pray over her children before they went to sleep.
„Before I went to her with all my problems, and now I go to God,“ Cam’Ryne Singleton said.
AN ANGEL
Bethane Middleton described her sister, Depayne Middleton-Doctor, 49, as a tender woman who took care of her. She had a beautiful voice.
„I consider her a borrowed angel,“ Middleton said.
THE OPEN ROAD
Daniel „Dapper Dan“ Simmons, 74, was so nicknamed for his shiny shoes and fine hats. His son, Dan Simmons Jr., said his father adored his grandchildren and spoke with them often, always willing to travel wherever was necessary to spend time with people he loved.
One of the first black drivers hired by Greyhound, Simmons loved to drive, up until the day of his death, his son said.
„He just loved everything about life,“ Simmons said.
OTHER VICTIMS
Cynthia Hurd, 54, was a librarian. Ethel Lance, 70, was the church sexton who kept the bathrooms and building immaculately clean.
Susie Jackson, 87, sang in the church choir and Tywanza Sanders, 26, was Jackson’s nephew and an aspiring poet.

Mexico gas price protests, looting leave 2 dead, 600 arrested

0

NewsHubMEXICO CITY — Anger over gasoline price hikes in Mexico fueled more protests and looting Thursday, and officials said the unrest had resulted in the death of a policeman and a bystander, the ransacking of 300 stores and arrests of over 600 people.
The country’s business chambers said the combination of highway, port and terminal blockades and looting this week forced many stores and businesses to close and threatened supplies of basic goods and fuel.
Mexicans were enraged by the 20 percent fuel price hike announced over the weekend as part of a government deregulation of the energy sector. Protesters began blocking highways and gas stations, and some people have broken into stores to carry off merchandise.
Authorities said one policeman was run over and killed and another was seriously injured when they tried to stop robberies at a gas station in Mexico City. Police in the capital said they had arrested 76 people for looting about 29 stores.
In the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, a pickup truck trying to flee police during a store looting ran over a pedestrian, killing him, officials said.
Veracruz Gov. Miguel Angel Yunes Linares ventured out Thursday and tried to persuade a crowd not to attack a grocery store that had already been looted a day earlier. He offered the crowd coupons for $23.25 if they would desist from looting.
In Mexico State, which borders Mexico City, 430 people had been detained as suspected looters. Four state police officers were fired and detained after they were caught on video taking some looted items and putting them in their patrol vehicles.
With blockades affecting gas distribution terminals to gas stations, the Communications and Transport Department announced it would cancel permits for truckers who block roads.
Truck and taxi drivers have been among the most affected by the fuel price increases, which took effect as the government ends regulated prices for gasoline and diesel, which it says represented subsidies that unduly benefited wealthier Mexicans.
The change boosted the average price for a liter of premium gasoline to about 90 cents. That makes 4 liters, or about a gallon, equal to nearly as much as Mexico’s just raised minimum wage for a day’s work – about $4.
President Enrique Pena Nieto said Wednesday that he would try to help groups hit hard by the increases.
“I understand the anger and irritation felt by the general public” over the price increases, Pena Nieto said. But, he added, “If this decision had not been taken, the effects and consequences would have been far more painful.”
