Kisenosato, Hakuho maintain lead at New Year tourney ‹ Japan Today

0

NewsHubTOKYO —
Ozeki Kisenosato and yokozuna Hakuho took different paths to maintain their share of the lead on Saturday, the seventh day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament.
Kisenosato’s barge and drive proved too much for No. 4 maegashira Tochiozan (1-6), who looked to have matched the ozeki on the initial charge at Ryogoku Kokugikan but was immediately bulldozed out of the ring. Kisenosato seems well-placed for a run at his first championship at the 15-day tournament.
On a day when fellow Mongolian yokozuna Harumafuji pulled out with a hamstring injury, Hakuho downed compatriot Tamawashi to make it seven out of seven after he was initially forced on to the back foot and needed to make two dodging moves. After an exchange of slaps with the gutsy new sekiwake, the yokozuna succeeded in sidestepping another charge from Tamawashi who overstepped to bring a premature end to the bout.
Kakuryu had to work hard to stop his three-day losing streak after No. 3 maegashira Okinoumi (2-5) survived a flurry of throws and a foot sweep from the yokozuna. Okinoumi seemed to have made the most of Kakuryu’s exhaustion as he charged forward, but the Mongolian barely executed a pulling overarm throw to snatch a narrow win.
Harumafuji, who was hurt during his win on the fifth day and also wrestled to win on Friday, ends the meets with a 4-3 record as No. 3 maegashira Ikioi (5-2) was handed a win by default.
Three rank-and-filers all bounced back from sixth-day defeats to stay a win behind the leaders. No. 10 maegashira Takanoiwa and 13th-ranked Ichinojo entered with 5-1 records, and it was Takanoiwa who secured the force-out win in the battle of in-form Mongolians.
No. 15 maegashira Sadanoumi ousted 12th-ranked Daishomaru (2-5) for his sixth win, while No. 10 Sokokurai from China’s Inner Mongolia also secured his sixth win after grappling out top-flight debutant Chiyoo (2-5).
Up-and-coming No. 1 maegashira Mitakeumi (4-3) had beaten two yokozuna and ozeki each so far but fell to ozeki Terunofuji (3-4) in the last of his seven straight bouts against the sport’s top two ranks. Mitakeumi did well but the Mongolian locked up his arms before pushing him off the raised ring.
Goeido (5-2) had a strong charge before he was dodged and left wobbling by Shodai’s pulling overarm throw, but shoved the new sekiwake over the straw bales.
Kotoshogiku (2-5) needs eight wins here to retain his ozeki status but was dealt another blow in that bid, falling to a well-timed hand pull down from komusubi Takayasu (5-2) for his fourth straight loss of the tourney.

Abe's aide brands Trump 'hysterical' ‹ Japan Today

0

NewsHubTOKYO —
A close aide to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says that U. S. President-elect Donald Trump pitches his opinions in a “hysterical” manner and urging him to behave more “gently.”
“You behave more quietly and calmly. Be more gentle,” Toshihiro Nikai, the No. 2 man of Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, said during the recording of a TV program Friday for later broadcast, referring Trump’s way of blaming countries such as Japan for U. S. trade deficits.
The LDP secretary general expressed displeasure at Trump over his call for Japan to pay more for U. S. military forces stationed in Japan, saying, “Is it suitable for the president of a superpower to rant something in a unilateral and hysterical manner?”
Nikai is a veteran lawmaker who has held a number of key posts, such as trade minister and head of the LDP General Council, the party’s top decision-making body.
Nikai lashed out at Trump in connection with his criticism of Toyota Motor Corp.‘s plan to build a factory in Mexico, and threatening to slap heavy duties on vehicles shipped to the U. S. from there.
Japanese companies are doing business “complying with international rules, Nikai said, adding no matter how Trump threatens Toyota, it will make little difference.

Toxic chemicals found at Tokyo’s new fish market site

0

NewsHubAn amount of benzene 79 times the government-set safety limit was detected among other toxic chemicals in groundwater taken from the site in Tokyo’s Toyosu area where the famous Tsukiji fish market is to be relocated, officials of the Tokyo metropolitan government said on Saturday. With the shocking result prompting questions over the veracity of data from previous groundwater tests, which had rarely found any problematic levels of toxins, the metropolitan government’s panel of experts said it will re-examine the groundwater there and release the result of the probe in March. The new finding could delay Governor Yuriko Koike’s decision on whether to allow the planned market relocation to proceed. . “I am surprised to know that detected levels came in far higher than expected,” Koike told reporters. She said separately that the metropolitan government “will have experts discuss” how to deal with the soil contamination. This is the second time that toxic substances contained in groundwater samples from the relocation site have been found to exceed environmental safety limits. Benzene, which also results from the production of gas, is known to cause cancer. The area used to be a gas production plant. The metropolitan government said toxins were detected from groundwater at 72 out of 201 monitoring points. At one spot, benzene 79 times the allowable limit was detected, while arsenic at 3.8 times the government-set environmental limit, and even cyanide, were also detected. Before the latest survey, eight similar surveys had been conducted since November 2014, when the Tokyo government claimed it had finished taking steps to deal with soil contamination caused by the previous gas production at the site. The first seven surveys cleared the environmental standards. But in the eighth test, the results of which were released last September, two toxic chemicals – benzene and arsenic – were detected in groundwater samples at levels slightly exceeding the allowable limits. At a news conference on Saturday, panel chairman Tatemasa Hirata said a surge in the levels of these chemicals in the latest survey is unusual, saying, “There is a need to look into whether this trend will continue.” With the fresh finding, a conclusive report the panel was scheduled to compile in April will be “slightly delayed”, Hirata said. The detection of sharply higher levels of benzene and other substances in the groundwater at the Toyosu site has as the metropolitan government seeks to ensure the safety of the replacement site. “I find [myself] with a renewed sense of surprise at how things have turned out,” said Hiroyasu Ito, chairman of the Tsukiji Market Association. Ito has been asking Koike to decide quickly whether to relocate the aging market, which opened in 1935, to the new site. Yasuhiro Yamazaki, president of a fish processing intermediate wholesaler business, said the latest finding will further raise public doubt about the safety of the relocation site. “It is unavoidable if [the metropolitan government] is suspected of altering [earlier] data,” Yamazaki said. In the past few years, concerns about soil contamination in the new fish market site have resulted in groundwater monitoring. But Koike, upon becoming Tokyo mayor last August, decided to postpone the planned November 2016 relocation of the wholesale market, which also deals in fruit and vegetables, amid concerns about soil and air pollution, as well as mounting costs linked to the project. The planned relocation faced a further setback when Koike disclosed in September that not enough fresh soil had been layer beneath the main buildings of the new wholesale market. The governor said in November that the opening date for the new market will fall some time from the end of 2017 to spring next year, or later, after the expert panel completes between April and May their assessment of the data released.

Japan and Australia agree to strengthen defence ties

0

NewsHubSYDNEY: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull in Sydney on Saturday where the pair agreed to deepen defence ties through joint military training and exercises.
Abe’s visit to Australia is the first since Turnbull became prime minister in late 2015, and comes amid heightened regional tension as China asserts its claims over disputed territory in the South China Sea.
„We have confirmed our commitment to the rule of law, free trade and open markets in our region,“ Turnbull told reporters at a joint press conference on Saturday.
Abe said the increasingly uncertain geopolitical landscape made the relationship between Japan and Australia more important than ever.
„It is important to guard and increase the robustness of the free, open and rules-based international order,“ Abe said.
The two leaders announced the signing of an Acquisition and Cross‑Servicing Agreement (ACSA), which will increase cooperation in combined exercises, training and peace-keeping operations. The agreement is expected to be finalised by the end of 2017.
The announcement comes nearly nine months after Australia chose a French bid over a Japanese design for a new fleet of submarines.
The loss of the US$40 billion contract was a major blow for Abe’s ambitions to develop Japan’s defence export capabilities as part of a more muscular security agenda.
Japan, as well as Australia, is looking to protect its strategic and trade interests in Asia-Pacific, especially as China becomes increasingly assertive in the South China Sea.
Both leaders also reaffirmed the importance of their respective security alliances with the United States on Saturday.
China’s recent naval exercises in the South China Sea and the building of islands there, with military assets, has unnerved its neighbours and risks a fallout with the United States.
U. S. president-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, has said China should be denied access to islands it has built in the South China Sea.
China claims most of the resource-rich South China Sea through which about US$5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. Neighbours Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims.

Chinese leader meets Davos elite as voters revolt

0

NewsHubChina’s president will preach the advent of a new world order in Davos next week before the high priests of globalisation, who are facing an uprising from voters against their orthodoxy of open markets and borders.
The annual conclave of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alps, grouping 3,000 delegates from the worlds of government, business, science and the arts, has created the caricature of „Davos Man“, a rich, rootless globetrotter who worships with fellow disciples in the church of free trade.
But populists are singing from a radically different hymn sheet. Their hostility towards both unfettered trade and immigration has already yielded Britain’s vote to leave the European Union and the rise of once-fringe parties across Europe, including in France and Germany.
The ultimate rebuke to „Davos Man“ will come on Friday, the last day of the week-long forum, when Donald Trump is inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States.
And the consensus of a rules-based global order led by Washington is threatened by communist China’s inexorable rise.
In that context, it is noteworthy that Xi Jinping will become the first Chinese president to attend the forum when he gives a keynote speech on Tuesday that is expected to extol Beijing’s efforts to negotiate new types of regional trade deals shorn of US influence.
This year’s Davos „may be the start of China’s new role as a leader in promoting globalisation and a speedy recovery of the global economy“, as Western countries turn to „isolationist self-centredness“, commentator Sun Ding wrote for China’s official Xinhua news service.
IHS Markit chief economist Nariman Behravesh stressed China is in no position yet to replace the United States as a global hegemon, but told AFP: „In Davos, Xi will likely articulate China’s vision for the world economic and political order. “
– Don’t blame us –
Heading into the World Economic Forum’s 47th edition, organisers reject the charge of complacency. Founder and executive chairman Klaus Schwab, 78, told AFP that the discussions will aim to address „the root causes“ of the widespread anxiety felt among Western voters.
But he insists that globalised trade alone is not to blame for the rise of identity politics, pointing to advances in technology that have rendered millions of workers‘ jobs obsolete along with fraying social bonds for the „emotional turmoil“ afflicting so many.
The answer, Schwab said, lies not in retreating behind isolationist walls but in properly educating and training people to face up to what he calls the „Fourth Industrial Revolution“.
One theme of Davos this year is how white-collar workers could be next in the firing line, after their factory brethren, given the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence.
If Xi is the star turn, Chinese business leaders will also be out in force in Davos. Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry will be on hand from the outgoing US administration, along with new UN chief Antonio Guterres and ministers representing 70 countries.
Oscar-winning actors Matt Damon and Forest Whitaker will be present to promote development initiatives they are leading in poorer nations.
– Beware false prophets –
But in the short term, Friday’s inauguration of Trump will be the elephant in the Alps as Davos debates where the property tycoon — newly buffeted by incendiary allegations linked to Russia — intends to take his country.
If he is indeed bent on isolationism, „China is going to be there to try to fill the void“, commented Luis Garicano, professor of economics and strategy at the London School of Economics.
But he also pointed to the fact that in some of his cabinet picks, such as secretary of state and defence, Trump is surrounded by strong figures with top-level backgrounds in business or the military who are used to working across borders.
„These people are pretty committed to the world order, one could say the Davos order. He would seem to stand alone in his rejection of ‚Davos Man‘. “
The new US administration will be represented in Davos by Anthony Scaramucci, a flamboyant hedge-fund investor who is part of Trump’s transition team.
Scaramucci will be the object of wary curiosity from many in the Davos crowd. They no doubt share the view of Trump espoused by former Mexican president Vicente Fox that the Republican is a „false prophet“ who bodes ill for the world, elites and poor alike.
