Hyperloop One’s Global Challenge could help speed government connections as it preps for its test in the desert

0

NewsHubAfter sifting through thousands of applications since May of 2015, Hyperloop One announced today it has whittled its competitors in its Global Challenge down to 35 semifinalist teams from all over the world. According to H1, these teams come from 17 countries and represent every continent but Antarctica — 11 teams hail from the U. S., 5 from India and 4 are in the U. K.
The company has some ambitious plans to ship things and people all over the world at hyper-speed and the idea behind the challenge is to use these minds from several locations and countries to come up with a plan to connect and improve upon the hyperloop technology to help propel it throughout the globe as H1 begins to expand.
Each team puts forth a comprehensive plan with models, maps, renderings, talks and video to showcase how they would implement policies and procedures to get government and investors involved in the cause within their respective regions.
And it may prove smart to get ideas from all over the world to improve your game. On the flip of that is the prestige and recognition each team could get from local authorities and H1 itself. The company has promised eventual winners will get to “work closely with the Hyperloop One engineering and business development teams to explore project development and financing later this year,” according to a company release.
The competition will also help H1 make headway in areas it needs to connect into throughout the world. H1 is already running on full steam globally with plans to build the first commercial hyperloop transportation system in the world, going from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.
Earlier it announced a partnership with the third largest shipping port in the world DP World Group of Dubai and is currently preparing for its “Kitty Hawk moment” at Apex in North Las Vegas within the next three months, where H1 intends to conduct the first test of its technology on a 500 linear meter track, with the goal of hitting 700 mph (or the equivalent of shooting a human through a vacuum tube from San Francisco to Los Angeles in half an hour).
H1 does have some competition in the space, the closest being its L. A. counterpart Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, but so far no one has been able to prove the machinery can get to those speeds using hardly any electricity just yet so we are eagerly waiting to see what happens in the next three months in Vegas.
As for the remaining 35 semifinalists in the challenge, those teams now go up for review by Hyperloop One’s panel of experts and will eventually get whittled down to a fraction of the current number to be announced later this year.
H1 also told TechCrunch it will be raising for the company and for each chosen team separately to build a hyperloop and work on projects to help move H1 forward in each of their respective regions.

Add items to your grocery list by scanning them on the way to the garbage can

0

NewsHubAt first glance, the GeniCan is completely ridiculous. At second, it’s actually kind of brilliant. The scanner clips onto the side of a trash can, an always present reminder to scan items when you run out. Before throwing an object out, you hold it up to the IR scanner and it adds it to your list.
If an item can’t be scanned – like, say, a piece of fruit — the company relies on voice command. You tell it to add an orange, and it adds an orange, syncing it with the company’s shopping list app. And that’s pretty much it, really.
We got a basic demo of the tech in action tonight at an after hours CES event, though the IR was acting up in the odd ballroom setting we were demoing the tech in, so it was fairly hiccupy. I’m willing to concede here that a ballroom setting is not the standard case use for a device like this.
That said, the product is currently in its final version, with shipping starting early this year, so hopefully the thing will work better in a more standard kitchen setting. I’d also like to learn a bit more about the technology driving the voice recognition tech here. The company wouldn’t spill the beans, beyond saying that they’ve partnered with a third party for the tech.
At $129 for preorder and $149 for the final version, it’s not cheap for a relatively minor convenience. But it’s a pretty ingenious bit of technology, nonetheless.

'Border wall will be paid for by Mexico' – Donald Trump repeats election claim

0

NewsHubDonald Trump has repeated the claim made during his election campaign that Mexico will foot the bill for a wall along the US-Mexican border.
Congressional Republicans and the president-elect’s transition team are exploring whether they can make good on his promise to build a wall without passing a new bill.
Under the evolving plan, the Trump administration would rely on existing legislation authorising fencing and other technology along the southern border.
Legislators would be asked to ensure enough money is available in US coffers to build the wall, but Congress would not pass a standalone bill authorising it.
Mr Trump said in a tweet early on Friday: „The dishonest media does not report that any money spent on building the Great Wall (for sake of speed), will be paid back by Mexico later! “
The potential approach was confirmed by two congressional officials and a senior transition official with knowledge of the discussions. They emphasised that no final decisions had been made.
The approach could come as a surprise to some but could also prevent a legislative fight Mr Trump might lose if he tried to get Congress to pass a measure authorising the kind of border wall he promised during the campaign.
It is not clear how much could be done along the 2,000-mile border without additional action by Congress. Legislators passed the Secure Fence Act of 2006, but most of those 700 miles have already been built. Some areas are in much better shape than others and long stretches are made up of fencing that stops vehicles but not pedestrians.
Whatever steps might be taken without Congress’s approval would be likely to fall short of the extravagant new wall on the border that Mr Trump repeatedly said Mexico would pay for during his campaign for the White House.
Despite Congress’s involvement in approving any spending, such an approach might also open Mr Trump to charges of circumventing the House and the Senate to take unilateral actions, something he repeatedly criticised President Barack Obama for.
A spending bill including money for border construction could also provoke a legislative showdown given potential opposition from Senate Democrats.
However, some immigration hardliners have already expressed the desire to see Congress take a vote, given how prominent the wall was during Mr Trump’s presidential campaign, and their desire to act on the issue.
His vow to build an impenetrable concrete wall along the southern border was his signature campaign proposal.
Mr Trump often promised the wall would be built of hardened concrete, rebar and steel as tall as his venues‘ ceilings, and would feature a „big, beautiful door“ to allow legal immigrants to enter.
Most experts viewed such promises as unrealistic and impractical, and Mr Trump himself sometimes allowed that the wall would not need to span the entire length of the border, thanks to natural barriers like rivers. After winning the election, he said he would be open to stretches of fencing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin 'ordered' campaign to influence US election

0

NewsHubRussian President Vladimir Putin „ordered“ a campaign aimed at influencing the US presidential election, according to a new declassified report.
US intelligence officials released the 25-page public version of the report on Friday, after they briefed President-elect Donald Trump and top lawmakers on Capitol Hill from a longer, classified version.
The report says Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election represent the most recent expression of Moscow’s long-standing desire to undermine the US-led liberal democratic order. It says the scope of Russia’s activities was significantly larger compared with previous operations.
It made clear that the Russian government had developed a „clear preference for President-elect Donald Trump. “
The goal of Moscow’s meddling was to undermine public faith in the US democratic process, denigrate Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton and harm her electability and potential presidency, the report said.
After his briefing, Mr Trump stopped short of embracing the intelligence community’s assessment that Russia interfered in the presidential campaign, saying only that any hacking attempts had „absolutely no effect“ on the outcome of the election.

Michelle Obama tears up as she delivers final speech as first lady

0

NewsHubMichelle Obama said that being first lady „has been the greatest honour of my life“ as she bid an early farewell to the White House.
An East Room ceremony honouring the 2017 school counsellor of the year, and the work of all school counsellors, marked her final event as first lady.
Before the tearful goodbye, there were words of encouragement for young people. Mrs Obama, as she has done many times in eight years in the White House, urged children to get the best education they can and then use it to „lead by example with hope, never fear“.
„Don’t be afraid,“ she said.
The first lady also praised the „glorious diversity“ of people of all faiths, colours and creeds in America as „not a threat to who we are“ but as what „makes us who we are“. The comment seemed a rebuke of President-elect Donald Trump, who criticised Mexicans, Muslims and others throughout his presidential campaign.
„To the young people out there, do not ever let anyone make you feel like you don’t matter or like you don’t have a place in our American story, because you do,“ Mrs Obama said. „And you have a right to be exactly who you are. “
She urged them to get ready to add their voices to the national conversation and „stand up for our proud American values“.
Mrs Obama asked them to remember, when they encounter obstacles and feel like giving up, what she said she and President Barack Obama have talked about since first starting their journey to the White House nearly a decade ago, „and that is the power of hope“.
She said hope has allowed the couple to „rise above the voices of doubt and division, of anger and fear, that we have faced in our own lives and in the life of this country“.
Mrs Obama ended the appearance by thanking the school counsellors standing behind her for their hard work and dedication. She has said school counsellors often are the „deciding factor“ in whether a student decides to attend college.
„Being your first lady has been the greatest honour of my life, and I hope I’ve made you proud,“ Mrs Obama said.
The first lady has said she will continue, after she and her husband leave on January 20, to work on issues she championed as first lady. They include education, fighting childhood obesity and support for military families.

Apple chops Tim Cook's pay after 2016 dip

0

NewsHubApple CEO Tim Cook had a better year in 2015.
Apple failed to meet its annual sales goals in 2016, and CEO Tim Cook paid the price.
Cook earned $8.75 million in 2016, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing from Apple on Friday. That compares with $10.28 million in 2015, and $9.22 million in 2014.
The Cupertino, California-based company had aimed to surpass its $223.6 billion in sales from 2015. Instead it fell short in 2016, raking in $215.6 billion.
Because of the dip, Apple executives, including Cook, received only 89.5 percent of their annual cash incentives.
For 2016, Cook’s total compensation included $5.37 million in cash incentive pay, compared with $8 million in 2015 and $6.7 million in 2014.
His base salary increased, though, from $2 million in 2015 to $3 million last year.
Apple struggled with iPhone sales in 2016 — the first time its flagship phone saw shipment declines. The company makes more than two-thirds of its revenue from the iPhone, so the device’s drop put a dent in Apple’s revenue.
Apple did not respond to requests for comment.
Meanwhile, the company is playing up its App Store sales boost, with its highest revenue ever in 2016, according to the filing. The momentum continues to roll into 2017. New Year’s Day was its biggest sales day ever.

ASUS ProArt PA32U Display: 4K, 1000 Nits Brightness, 95% DCI-P3, 85% Rec. 2020

0

NewsHubASUS introduced a new professional-grade monitor at CES this week. The unit supports a 4K (UHD) resolution, HDR10, a very high brightness and an astonishing range of color gamuts required by artists, designers, photographers and video professionals today, including the Rec. 2020 (BT.2020) standard. The ProArt PA32U will be available in the second half of this year at a rather hefty price tag, as you can imagine. In addition, ASUS announced its ProArt PA27AQ monitor aimed at the entry level segment of the professional market.
The ASUS ProArt PA32U uses a 4K UHD panel with HDR capabilities, a quantum dot film and a special backlight featuring 384 LED zones that enable 1000-nit brightness and support for local dimming. The manufacturer notes that its new panel with quantum dots, backlighting and calibration enable the monitor to cover 99.5% of the Adobe RGB, 85% of the Rec. 2020, 100% of the sRGB and 95% of the DCI-P3 color spaces, which makes the display particularly appealing to artists and photographers (Adobe RGB) as well as to video editors and animation designers who do post-production work for digital cinema or TV (DCI-P3 and BT.2020). The number of features, as well as the use of quantum dot technology, represents an interesting combination for a professional display. Moreover, it looks like the ASUS ProArt PA32U will be one of the first mass-market monitors supporting the Rec. 2020 color gamut at all and covering 85% of it.
The ProArt PA32U monitor will be calibrated at the factory, but people with appropriate equipment will be able to further tune them their particular needs. The ProArt PA32U stores all the color parameters locally (and not on the PC), so users will be able to use it with different devices without the necessity to recalibrate it. This will be particularly valuable for those who works on Apple macOS and Microsoft Windows platforms. To hook up the monitor to either PC, the PA32U is equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 input (which means DP 1.2 over a USB-C cable), but we do not know whether other ports are supported.
Since this is a preliminary announcement, ASUS does not disclose whether it uses an IPS or an IGZO panel (like it used for its previous-generation flagship professional display) for its PA320U as well as details about the LUTs (look-up-tables), refresh rate and so on. We do understand that the panel is an LCD based on usage of quantum dots and high, but not prohibitively high, price.
For people who do not need 4K UHD resolution, Rec. 2020 or DCI-P3 color spaces and HDR, ASUS plans to offer its 27” ProArt PA27 AQ monitor with 2560 × 1440 resolution, sRGB color gamut and Thunderbolt 3 input. The monitor will also come pre-calibrated and will support the same ProArt Calibration features as its bigger brother (color-accuracy tuning, uniformity compensation local store of parameters, etc.).
The ASUS ProArt PA32U will be available in Q3 2017 for $1799 – $1999.
Pricing of the ProArt PA27AQ (as well as its availability timeframe) are unknown.

Samsung expects fired-up profits despite Note 7 flameout

0

NewsHubSamsung’s profits didn’t burn to ground after all in the Great Galaxy Note 7 Implosion.
The South Korean electronics giant on Friday released a forecast for its earnings report for the October-December period, saying it expects a $7.8 billion boost in its fourth-quarter operating profits. This comes even though the Note 7’s fiery recall was expected to cost the company $3 billion during those three months.
What drove the fourth-quarter for Samsung was Galaxy S7 phone, its lineup of chips and its display screens.
Still, maybe there’s just something a little different about the Note 7, a sizzle-turned-fizzle phone that some people clung to even with the threat of the devices exploding.
Samsung’s fourth-quarter earnings are expected to be its highest since 2013 and its third-highest ever, and could have been its highest of all time if it weren’t for the Note 7’s demise, according to analysts at Wall Street firm Bernstein.
„This sets Samsung up to potentially beat all time high annual profits for 2017 (and potentially by a wide margin if Galaxy S8 launch goes well),“ Bernstein’s analysts said.
Samsung will release its detailed fourth quarter report by late January.
