Roof sentenced to death for church gun massacre

An unrepentant Dylann Roof has been sentenced to death for fatally shooting nine black church members during a ‚Bible‘ study session, becoming the first person to be executed for a federal hate crime.
A jury deliberated for about three hours before returning with the decision, capping a trial in which the 22-year-old avowed white supremacist did not fight for his life or show any remorse. He served as his own attorney during sentencing and never asked for forgiveness or mercy or explained the massacre.
Hours earlier, Roof threw away one last chance to plead for his life, telling jurors, „I still feel like I had to do it. “
The slain included the Rev Clementa Pinckney, the church pastor and a state senator, as well as a high school track coach, the church sexton, a librarian and an aspiring poet. They all shared deep devotion to the church, known as Mother Emanuel, and passed that faith along to their families, many of whom offered Roof forgiveness when he appeared in court just days after the attack.
As Roof spoke on Tuesday for about five minutes, every juror looked directly at him. A few nodded as he reminded them that they said during jury selection they could fairly weigh the factors of his case. Only one of them, he noted, had to disagree to spare him from a lethal injection.
„I have the right to ask you to give me a life sentence, but I’m not sure what good it would do anyway,“ he said. When the verdict was read, he stood stoic. Several family members of victims wiped away quiet tears.
Roof told FBI agents when they arrested him after the June 17, 2015, slayings that he wanted the shootings to bring back segregation or perhaps start a race war.
Instead, the slayings had a unifying effect, as South Carolina removed the Confederate flag from its Statehouse for the first time in more than 50 years. Other states followed suit, taking down Confederate banners and monuments. Roof had posed with the flag in photos.
Malcolm Graham, whose sister Cynthia Hurd was slain, said the jury made the right decision.
„There is no room in America’s smallest jail cell for hatred, racism and discrimination,“ he said from his home in Charlotte, North Carolina. „The journey for me and my family today has come to an end. “
One of Ms Hurd’s other brothers, Melvin Graham, said the jury’s decision „was a very hollow victory“ because his sister is still gone.
„He decided the day, the hour and minute my sister was going to die. Now someone is going to do it for him,“ he said.
Roof specifically selected Emanuel AME Church, the South’s oldest black church, to carry out the cold, calculated slaughter, assistant US attorney Jay Richardson said.

Вечером 11 января в социальных сетях начало распространятся сообщение о бунте в Лукьяновском СИЗО. По данным пользователей соцсетей на место уже выехал спецназ КОРД, а сам бунт устроили бойцы расформированной роты “Торнадо”.
Напомним, 8 июня Аваков подписал приказ о расформировании “Торнадо”. В тот же день Матиос сообщил, что бойцы отказались разоружаться и расположились в школе. Как сообщали “Вести”, правоохранители задержали семерых бойцов и командира „Торнадо“ Руслана Онищенко по подозрению в совершении тяжких преступлений в Луганской области. Их подозревают в похищении и истязании местных жителей в пригороде Лисичанска (Луганская область), а также мародерстве и групповом изнасиловании мужчины. По данным следствия, бойцы оборудовали пыточную в подвале одной из школ Северодонецка. “Торнадо” в качестве добровольческой роты было создано в октябре прошлого года на базе батальона “Шахтерск”, расформированного также по указу Авакова за мародерство. С июня 2014-го “Шахтерск” под командованием Онищенко участвовал в боях за поселок Пески, в зачистке Докучаевска и взятии Марьинки.

К СИЗО начали стягиваться силы полиции. По первым данным, между арестантами, которых доставили в СИЗО после заседания суда и конвоем возник конфликт, который перерост в противостояние.
Появились новые денные о бунте. Например, некоторые СМИ сообщили о заложнике у бунтующих в СИЗО торнадовцев. Однако, позже эта информация не подтвердилась. Однако, стало ясно, что конфликт может перерасти в серьезное столкновение – к СИЗО начали „подтягиватся“ другие экс-бойцы „Торнадо“ и „Правого сектора“.
К полуночи 12 января появился официальный комментарий киевской полиции. По данным главы Киевской полиции Андрей Крищенко, один из бойцов расформированной роты „Торнадо“ получил ранение, но точно неизвестно, поранил ли он себя сам, или ранили его. В связи с ранением „торнадовцы“, которые также находились в Лукьяновском СИЗО требовали от охраны, чтобы ему предоставили неотложную медицинскую помощь, которую почему-то не оказывали.
Как сообщил корреспондент „Вестей“ с места событий , полиция перекрыла район возле СИЗО. Был замечен автозак и скорая помощь. Подъехали патрули, вооруженыне автоматами, на автомобилях „Рексон“. Также присутствуют машины патрульной полиции и сотрудники силовых органов в красных беретах. По всему видно, что силовики готовятся к возможному штурму. Но визуально пока тихо.
Спикер Радикальной партии, нардеп Игорь Мосийчук прокомментировал события в Лукьяновском СИЗО , которые произошли поздно вечером в среду, 11 января. По словам нардепа, все началось с того, что один из торнадовцев нанес себе увечье. „После того, как заключенный боец „Торнадо“ с позывным „Ахиллес“ отрезал себе ухо, его соратники начали выбивать двери на боксах, требуя предоставить ему медицинскую помощь. Знаете, что сделали тюремщики? Они с перепугу закрылись в оружейной, а один от вида крови даже потерял сознание“, — написал Мосийчук. По его мнению, претензии к тюремной охране предъявить сложно, так как они получают 2000-2500 грн.
Каже появились версии, почему и как торнадовец искалечил себя.
Например, торнадовец с позывным Батя сообщил журналистам, что это была „пытка самоубийства“ в знак протеста. В комитете освобождения политзаключенных рассказали, что Ахилесса „довели до такого состояния, потом представители СИЗО чего-то испугались, закрылись в оружейном отделении и отказывались предоставить ему медицинскую помощь“. Врач прибыл не сразу, так как администрация СИЗО опасалась, что его возьмут в заложники.
Один из киевских активистов, близкий к радикальным кругам, Игорь Громов, рассказал „Вестям“, что как такового бунта не было.
„По моей информации, торнадовец сам порезал себе ухо в знак протеста против жестокого обращения с подозреваемыми, а затем сам закрылся в одном из помещений. Правоохранители испугались, но скорую поначалу не вызвали. Другие торнадовцы подняли из-за этого шум. После чего один из сотрудников СИЗО поднял панику и начал кричать о бунте“, – рассказал Громов.
В аккауне командира „Торнадо“ Руслана Онищенко в фейсбуке объяснялось, что никакого конфликта между заключенными не было, а Ахиллес полоснул себя по лицу и уху заточкой из-за того, что заключенных лишили солнечного света в камерах, а сотрудник СИЗО не проявлял достатчоного уважения к арестантам.
Известно, что после операции в больнице скорой помощи раненного уже вернули назад в СИЗО.

Данилюк: снова легализовать налоговую милицию не стоит

КИЕВ, 12 янв — РИА Новости Украина. Исправлять техническую ошибку Верховной Рады, в результате которой налоговая милиция уже с 1 января 2017 года объявлена вне закона не стоит.

В ближайшие дни Минфин внесет на рассмотрение правительства законопроект о создании Финансовой полиции, чего ждет бизнес и о которой говорится в меморандуме с МВФ.
Об этом сообщил министр финансов Александр Данилюк на странице в Facebook .
Министр финансов анонсировал изменения после создания финансовой полиции. Это, по его словам, изменение силового подхода на аналитический, сокращение штата с 15 тыс. человек до 2,5 тыс. человек, невмешательство в работу честного бизнеса, обновление персонала через прозрачный конкурс, а также зарплаты, которые уменьшат риск коррупции и дадут возможность привлекать лучшие кадры.
Ранее советник главы Минфина Яна Бугримова заявляла, что Министерство финансов рассчитывало провести ликвидацию налоговой милиции и создать на ее месте службу финансовых расследований до конца 2016 года.

В банке Литвы нашли $30 миллионов Лазаренко – СМИ

Международный проект журналистских расследований OCCRP сообщил, что его литовский партнер, издание 15min.lt, обнаружил в базе данных OCCRP документы, свидетельствующие о том, что на счету в банке Литвы лежат около 30 миллионов долларов, связанные с бывшим премьер-министром Украины Павлом Лазаренко, сообщает Радио Свобода
Отмечается, что эти средства заморожены на счету местного отделения шведского банка SEB, и литовские суды каждые несколько месяцев продолжают это замораживание в течение последних 17 лет.
По данным расследования, речь идет о части из порядка 200-250 миллионов долларов, которые связывают с Лазаренко и которые были заморожены в нескольких странах с подачи властей США еще в 2004 году.
Ранее счет с упомянутыми 30 миллионами долларами в литовском банке Hermis принадлежал банку Лазаренко European Federal Credit Bank, который был ликвидирован. В 2000 году литовское отделение банка SEB купило банк Hermis вместе с этим счетом.
Лазаренко занимал пост премьер-министра Украины с мая 1996 года по июль 1997 года. В 2004 году он осужден судом США за „финансовые злоупотребления“, и приговорен к девяти годам тюремного заключения и штрафу. В ноябре 2012 года Лазаренко освободили из федеральной тюрьмы и передали иммиграционным властям.

ЧП в Лукьяновском СИЗО: подробности

Как сообщает Украинская правда , по предварительной информации, между арестантами, которых доставили после заседания суда, и конвоем возник конфликт в здании СИЗО. Один из заключенных нанес себе телесные повреждения и сейчас под охраной доставлен в медучреждение.
Во время конфликта здание СИЗО окружала полиция для того, чтобы обеспечить порядок.
В то же время представитель Нацполиции Ярослав Тракало не смог ни опровергнуть, ни подтвердить информацию о том, что заключенные являются бойцами роты Торнадо. Он отметил, что эту информацию могут сообщить лишь в Минюсте.
Позже спикер Нацполиции сообщил, что все арестованные уже находятся в камерах, конфликт исчерпан.

Maurice Watson Jr. scored 21 points and No. 8 Creighton matched its best start in program history with a 75-64 victory over No. 12 Butler on Wednesday night.
The Bluejays (16-1, 4-1 Big East) rode hot shooting in the first half to build a big lead that Butler (14-3, 3-2) couldn’t overcome with its star Kelan Martin still struggling with his shot.
Watson made 9 of 14 shots and had seven assists but committed a season-high eight turnovers. Khyri Thomas added 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Cole Huff and Justin Patton each had 10 points.
Avery Woodson led the Bulldogs with 14 points.
Butler lost for the first time in five games against Top 25 opponents, and it failed in the bid for a fourth win over a top 10 opponent. All of the losses have come on the road.

Overlooked players who could star in the NFL playoffs

When Seattle Seahawks receiver Paul Richardson made a miraculous, one-handed touchdown catch in his team’s playoff opener, then followed it up with another acrobatic grab , plenty of folks watching the game on TV had one simple question: „Who is that guy? “
Happens every season.
Because while even the most casual NFL fan is familiar with certain players on each team — Russell Wilson, the quarterback throwing to Richardson, for example — there are plenty of others on the roster who are relatively, or completely, unknown to even thorough fans.
They’re not mysteries to their coaches and teammates, though.
„This is the kind of play we see from him in practice, so it’s not unfamiliar,“ Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said about Richardson. „Some of the plays were circus-like, but he has done that. … He’s been waiting a long while to help this team and feel significant about that impact and he’s done that. “

Suit: Golfer Run Over By Toilet At Golf Course, Forklift Driver Blamed

(STMW) — A golfer claims he was hit and seriously injured by a porta-potty that was being hauled by a forklift driver while he played at a course in northwest suburban Elk Grove Village last summer.
Brian Berg was watching his 6-iron shot from the fairway to the front of the seventh hole green at Fox Run Golf Links when his round took a turn for the worse on Aug. 11, according to a lawsuit he filed Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court.
A course employee had taken the forklift off the golf cart path and was driving “blind” as a portable toilet “completely obscured his view,” and hit Berg from behind, the suit says.
After he was knocked to the ground by the porta-potty’s “initial blow,” it did not stop, hitting him in the face and knocking him unconscious, the suit says. It injured his shoulder, cut his chin, cracked a rib, bruised a bicep and caused “a large, deep bruise to his leg.”
Berg is suing the Elk Grove Park District, which owns and operates Fox Run, and the employee who was driving the forklift. Officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday evening.
The worker was driving “with complete and utter indifference to the probability that a golfer would be in the path of a porta-potty,” according to the negligence suit, which claims the course “uses unsafe means and methods of transporting toilets.”
Berg is seeking more than $50,000 in damages.

Conor McGregor throws low blow at Floyd Mayweather with domestic violence jab

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 11 (UPI) — Undefeated retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather welcomes a boxing bout with UFC champion Conor McGregor.
Fittingly, it’s cash that’s keeping ‚Money‘ Mayweather from stepping into the ring with McGregor.
Mayweather was a guest on ESPN’s First Take Wednesday. He asked McGregor and the UFC to make the fight happen.
„You guys keep hearing all these different rumors about different fighters want to face Floyd Mayweather,“ Mayweather said on First Take. „Everybody keeps talking about Conor McGregor. He’s blowing smoke up everybody’s [expletive]. Dana White, the UFC— let’s make it happen. Bring him over to the boxing world, and I’ll show him what it’s like. “
The price tag for Mayweather’s return is set at $100 million guaranteed. McGregor said he wants the same amount for his hands in the duel.
„We are willing to give him $15 million, and then we can talk about splitting the percentage—the back end—on the pay-per-view. But of course, we’re the ‚A side.‘ How can a guy talk about making 20 or 30 million if he has never made 8 or 9 million in a fight,“ Mayweather told First Take .
The 28-year-old McGregor got his boxing license in December. The lightweight champion is taking a break from the Octagon due to the birth of his first child. Mayweather hasn’t boxed since beating Andre Berto in 2015.
„Right now, I have Floyd running around the Showtime offices gathering my money,“ McGregor told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in August. „That’s what he’s doing. He’s running around the Showtime offices, begging those executives to come up with the $100 million cash he needs to fight me. As soon as he gets my money, we can fight. “
The most disclosed money McGregor has cashed in for in a UFC fight was the $3 million he got for his UFC 202 win against Nate Diaz. Mayweather made more than $300 million for his 2015 victory against Manny Pacquiao.
Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, has said that the UFC won’t „entertain the idea of getting their cash cow annihilated,“ according to the Review-Journal .
McGregor jabbed Mayweather Wednesday by taking a shot at his history of domestic violence.
He posted a photo on Twitter of himself in emoji form, standing over Mayweather while holding championship belts. He wrote: „call me C. J. Watson ,“ as the caption.
Mayweather spent two months in prison after punching former girlfriend Josie Harris on Sept. 9, 2010. He has denied the altercation. According to the police report , Mayweather was holding Harris‘ cellphone and yelling at her about text messages from NBA guard C. J. Watson before the altercation. Harris admitted to her relationship with Watson while talking with Mayweather, according to the report.
Mayweather pleaded guilty to a reduced domestic violence charge and no contest to multiple harassment charges in 2011.
