Washington Post.

Obama speaks on Israel, Trump in last White House interview

0

NewsHubIt’s good to be home. My fellow Americans, Michelle and I have been so touched by all the well-wishes we’ve received.
President Barack Obama. (Nam Y Huh, AP)

Washington — The increase of Israeli settlements has „gotten
so substantial“ that it is inhibiting the possibility for an
„effective, contiguous Palestinian state,“ President Barack Obama
said on Sunday in his final interview as president.
Speaking
to CBS‘ 60 Minutes , Obama dismissed
the idea that there is a „major rupture“ in the relationship between
the United States and Israel after last month’s decision by the US to abstain
from a United Nations vote condemning Israeli settlements.
„Because
of our investment in the region, and because we care so deeply about Israel, I
think (the US) has a legitimate interest in saying to a friend, ‚This is a
problem,'“ Obama said. „It would have long-term consequences for
peace and security in the region, and the United States. “
The
outgoing president reflected on his legacy and his biggest challenges during
his eight years in office during the hourlong interview. A number of his
policies — from health care to his contentious relationship with Israel — could
be short-lived as President-elect Donald Trump becomes the 45th president later
this week and vows to reverse some of those policies.
Trump
has been vocal about his disapproval of many of Obama’s policies, often voicing
his disagreement or engaging in public disputes with the president on Twitter.
Most recently, Trump lashed out over hypothetical comments Obama made that he
would beat Trump if they ran against each other in a general election.
Over the
holidays, Trump accused Obama of throwing up „inflammatory“ roadblocks
during the transition of power and his administration of treating Israel with
„total disdain. “
Obama
acknowledged it’s been an „unusual“ transition, adding, „I
suspect the president-elect would agree with that. “
„We
are moving into an era where a lot of people get their information through
tweets and soundbites and some headline that comes over their phone,“ the
president said. „There’s a power in that. There’s also a danger — what
generates a headline or stirs up a controversy and gets attention isn’t the
same as the process required to actually solve the problem. “
He
warned people not to „underestimate the guy“ and urged congressional
Republicans and Trump supporters around the country to be sure „that as we
go forward, certain norms, certain institutional traditions don’t get eroded because there’s a reason they’re in
place. “
Keeping democracy healthy
Obama
said there needs to be a focus on „making sure that our democracy stays
healthy, and making sure that we maintain that sense of solidarity. “
With
that, he said he’s been „disturbed“ about intelligence reports over
Russia hacking the US election.
„I
have been concerned about the degree to which, in some circles, you’ve seen
people suggest that Vladimir Putin has more credibility than the US
government,“ he said. „You’re not going to be able to make good
decisions without building some relationship of trust between yourself and that
community. “
Obama
also reflected on his approach to the civil war in Syria, as it approaches its
sixth year with hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced around the
world.
The
president acknowledged that his „red line“ declaration about the use
of chemical weapons by Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government wasn’t in his
2012 speech and that he didn’t have to use those words. They later prompted
harsh criticism, since the US did not follow through on the threat.
„I
would have, I think, made a bigger mistake if I had said, ‚Eh, chemical
weapons. That doesn’t really change my calculus,'“ he said. „And
regardless of how it ended up playing, I think, in the Beltway, what is true is
Assad got rid of his chemical weapons. “

10 Guantanamo Bay inmates accepted by Oman, Gulf nation says

0

NewsHubDUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Oman says it has accepted 10 inmates from the U. S. prison at Guantanamo Bay ahead of President Obama leaving office.
Oman’s Foreign Ministry made the announcement Monday morning.
There was no immediate word from the Pentagon about the transfer.
Oman said it accepted the prisoners at Mr. Obama’s request. It didn’t name them.
CBS News‘ Margaret Brennan reports from Guantanamo Bay, where President-elect Donald Trump says he plans to continue to imprison terror suspects …
“To meet a request by the U. S. government to assist in settling the issue of the detainees at Guantanamo, out of consideration of their humanitarian situation, 10 people released from that prison arrived in the Sultanate of Oman for a temporary residency,” the Reuters news agency quotes a foreign ministry statement as saying.
Days earlier, authorities said 19 of the remaining 55 prisoners at the U. S. military base in Cuba were cleared for release and could be freed in the final days of Mr. Obama’s presidency.
It was part of an effort by Mr. Obama to shrink the prison population since he couldn’t close it.
U. S. President-elect Trump said during his campaign that he not only wants to keep Guantanamo open but “load it up with some bad dudes.”

Bottas replaces Rosberg at Mercedes, Massa back at Williams

0

NewsHubFinnish driver Valtteri Bottas will race alongside three-time champion Lewis Hamilton at Formula One team Mercedes this season.
The 27-year-old Bottas will fill the seat left by world champion Nico Rosberg’s retirement.
With Bottas moving on, F1 team Williams said Monday that Felipe Massa will come out of retirement to race for a fourth consecutive season.
Rosberg retired only five days after beating Hamilton to his first world title in November. Mercedes also won its third straight constructors‘ championship.
„Sometimes in life, unexpected circumstances provide interesting opportunities,“ Mercedes head of motorsport Toto Wolff said in a statement. „Nico’s decision in December was a big surprise – certainly a challenging situation for the team to handle. But weathering the storm makes you more resilient and we see this as another opportunity for the team to grow. “
Bottas finished eighth in the drivers‘ standings with 85 points last season. In four seasons with Williams, he started 77 races and achieved nine podium finishes. Wolff said it was time for him to step up to the next level and „how he can challenge for race wins and championships. “
„Valtteri is a no-nonsense guy: down to earth, straightforward and very focused,“ Wolff said. „Pretty Finnish, to be honest, and a great fit for us. “
Massa will head back to Williams only a few months after retiring from Formula One. The Brazilian has agreed to a one-year deal and will race alongside F1 debutant Lance Stroll.
„I am very happy to have an opportunity to return to Williams. I always intended to race somewhere in 2017, but Williams is a team close to my heart and I have respect for everything it is trying to achieve,“ Massa said. „Valtteri has a great opportunity, given the turn of events over the winter, and I wish him all the best at Mercedes. “
Earlier, Mercedes‘ young driver Pascal Wehrlein, who had been linked with replacing Rosberg, joined Swiss team Sauber.

TV Ratings: NFL Playoff Tops World Series, Best Telecast Since Super Bowl

This robust postseason NFL bears no resemblance to the dampened league seen at the top of the season. Sunday’s playoff games were huge, for Fox and NBC, with Fox’s earlier showing on track to be the biggest U. S. telecast since the Super Bowl.
The Green Bay Packers put an end to the Dallas Cowboys‘ NFC ambitions in a stunning 11th hour victory, and audiences stuck around. The game averaged a 28.2 overnight rating among households. That’s a stunning 12 percent boost from even Game 7 of the World Series, which ultimately swung 40 million viewers.
The primetime showing on NBC was almost as sweet, and also set a record. With a 21.9 overnight rating among households, it proved to be the best primetime showing on record for a NFL Wild Card or Divisional Playoff Game.
Both the NFC and AFC showings bode well for the rest of this especially strong postseason.

Jordy Nelson eyes playing next week if Green Bay Packers advance

0

NewsHubGreen Bay Packers star wide receiver Jordy Nelson , who already was ruled out with cracked ribs for Sunday’s divisional playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys , hopes to play next week if his team advances to the NFC title game.
Nelson told NFL Network his biggest goal right now is to get back to normal breathing.
„It’s a pain no one wants to feel,“ Nelson said Sunday.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Friday that team doctors did not medically clear the ninth-year veteran to practice Saturday.
Nelson has been sidelined because of cracked ribs he sustained in last Sunday’s 38-13 wild-card playoff win over the New York Giants .
Nelson traveled with the team to Dallas and will be re-evaluated by team doctors on Monday. He was on the field before Sunday’s game.
For the first time this season, the Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be without their top receiver, who led the team in receptions (97), receiving yards (1,257) and touchdown catches (14) during the regular season.
Nelson’s absence will elevate now-healthy Randall Cobb (60 catches for 610 yards and four TDs) into the role of lead receiver. Cobb caught three touchdown passes against the Giants while accumulating five receptions for 116 yards.
