0

NewsHubWe wtorek w Warszawie odbyła się konferencja prasowa dotycząca opinii biegłych ws. teczki personalnej i teczki pracy TW „Bolek“ i zawartych w nich dokumentów z lat 1970-1976. Opinię „z zakresu badania pisma ręcznego“ przygotował Instytut Ekspertyz Sądowych im. prof. Jana Sehna w Krakowie.
Ponadto autentyczne okazały się m.in. 29 odręczne doniesienia z podpisem „Bolka“.
Dyrektor Instytutu Sehna dr hab.

US: Israelis born in Muslim states not restricted by Trump travel ban

0

NewsHubUS visas for Israelis born in one of the seven predominantly-Muslim countries currently barred from entering the US remain valid despite new US travel restrictions , the American Embassy in Tel Aviv said Tuesday.
Previously-issued US visas remain in tact as long as the visa holder does not concurrently hold a valid passport from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen. In a statement, the US embassy clarified that for such Israelis, „your visa was not cancelled and remains valid. „

EU-Ratspräsident Tusk: Trump eine Gefahr für die EU

0

As America weighs the fate of Trump’s court pick, Feinstein is the Democrat to watch

0

NewsHubDianne Feinstein is embarking on a crucial moment in her 24-year Senate career: leading what’s likely to be tense, lengthy and intensely watched scrutiny of President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.
Trump’s immigration order looms as a crucial flashpoint as the California senator, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, prepares to grill the president’s choice.
Feinstein won’t talk specifically about her plans. But she said Monday that in just the Trump administration’s first week “we’ve seen a flurry of executive orders and presidential declarations like none before – some broad, some seemingly unconstitutional, some unenforceable – and all deeply concerning in their intent and legality.”
Feinstein’s prominent role in cross-examining the nominee follows nationwide airport protests over Trump’s order banning refugees and citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States.
Legal challenges of those orders are expected to go to the Supreme Court and Trump’s nominee is going to play a vital role. Feinstein, an 83-year-old who had a pacemaker installed three weeks ago, will be the national face of Democrats calling for a judicial check on Trump’s power.
The Judiciary Committee has 11 Republicans and nine Democrats. Hearings are likely to begin later this winter, and if the committee approves the choice, it goes to the full Senate. Sen. Charles Grassley, an Iowa Republican, chairs the panel. He’s regarded as independent-minded but routinely sides with Republicans on judicial matters.
Feinstein will be leading a group of Democrats on the committee including aggressive questioners such as Al Franken of Minnesota, Dick Durbin of Illinois and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.
“There will be questions for the nominee about whether they believe these executive orders are consistent with the rule of law and the Constitution of the United States,” Blumenthal said. “It will be very, very significant in reflecting the nominee’s understanding of the Constitution.”
Liberal groups are cheered by how passionately Feinstein attacked Trump’s executive orders as she voted against his nominee for attorney general, Jeff Sessions, in the Judiciary Committee.
“She has always been an incredibly thoughtful senator, a senator who cares deeply about the issues that come before the Supreme Court,” said Daniel Goldberg, legal director at the Alliance for Justice. “It’s telling the type of leadership she showed on the Jeff Sessions nomination.”
Republicans control 52 of the Senate’s 100 seats. Feinstein has a tough job, as even Trump critics among the Republicans, such as Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, are inclined to support his nominee.
“I voted for (Democratic nominees) Sotomayor and Kagan because they were qualified. The list of nominees that he’s talked about is a very qualified group of people, and if he chooses from that list then he deserves the same respect given to Sotomayor and Kagan,” Graham said Monday.
The Senate split mostly on partisan lines in the confirmations of Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, with few Republicans voting to support them.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said it was wrong for Democrats to launch a “partisan crusade” against Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.
“It doesn’t matter if the president is George H. W. Bush or Gerald Ford,” he said on the Senate floor Tuesday. “They’ll warn of impending doom . they’ll claim the end is nigh.”
Feinstein opposed George W. Bush Supreme Court nominees John Roberts Jr. and Samuel Alito but broke with her party to support a controversial Bush federal appellate court nominee, Leslie Southwick. Feinstein is well prepared for hearings and avoids grandstanding, said Rory Little, a professor at the University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco.
Former San Francisco Chronicle editorial page editor Jerry Roberts, author of the biography “Dianne Feinstein: Never Let Them See You Cry,” said Trump’s executive orders struck at the heart of Feinstein’s fastidious view of what she saw as correct government process.
“That’s the kind of thing that drives her crazy,” he said. “It goes back to Dianne, the girl at the Convent of the Sacred Heart school.”
Roberts said Feinstein’s role as the Democrats’ leader in vetting Trump’s nominee represented one of the most significant moments of her long Senate career.
“It’s real legacy stuff, whether she decides to run again in two years or not,” Roberts said.

Trump slams China and Japan over currencies

0

NewsHubUS President Donald Trump on Tuesday lambasted Japan and China for devaluing their currencies, a clear signal of his belief that the two countries are currency manipulators. “You look at what China’s doing, you look at what Japan has done over the years. They play the money market, they play the devaluation market and we sit there like a bunch of dummies,” he said in a meeting with pharmaceutical company executives. The remarks prompted the yen to jump to near a two-month high of 112.08 to the US dollar. The yen also strengthened on a news report that Trump’s trade adviser slammed Germany for using a “grossly undervalued” euro to gain an unfair advantage over the United States and the rest of the European Union. It now appears almost certain that Trump will take up the issue of dollar-yen exchange rates when he meets Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the White House on February 10. Trump last week accused Japan and China of engaging in trade practises that he said are “not fair” to American companies, while singling out auto trade with Japan as falling into that category. He also said the United States will include a clause preventing currency manipulation in all future bilateral trade deals.

LG’s 5K monitor for Macs doesn't like being near routers

0

NewsHubLG’s UltraFine 5K Display might be a 27-inch monitor with a massive 5,120 x 2,880 resolution – and a honking price tag to match – but it’s suffering from a serious bugbear after going on sale last month. Namely, the fact that it doesn’t get along well with nearby Wi-Fi routers.
If the router happens to be within 2 meters distance of the display, then the monitor isn’t so „ultra-fine. “ In fact, things aren’t remotely fine, and the peripheral becomes effectively „unusable“, as 9 to 5 Mac reports.
Apparently, users can experience nasty flickering which can turn into a black screen as the router is moved closer, with the tech site noting that the display would keep disconnecting itself from the MacBook Pro it was hooked up to – even causing the laptop to freeze up at times.
LG’s technical support acknowledged the problem, advising to check whether the monitor is near a router, and saying that this could affect the performance of the display. In further correspondence, the monitor manufacturer said it recommends that any Wi-Fi router is placed at least 2m away from the screen to avoid such interference.
LG also made it clear that this issue only affected its 5K monitors and not other models.
Reviews of the product on the Apple store also complain about this issue, with one buyer writing: “Connecting the MBP [MacBook Pro] to the display causes the MBP to freeze frequently, or not respond at all. Connected keyboards (with required USB adaptors, naturally) constantly need to be unplugged and plugged in again to work…”
We’ve contacted Apple to see if the company has any comment on this matter, and will update this story with any response we receive.
At any rate, if you’ve been tearing your hair out due to similar problems with your shiny new 5K display, and there’s a nearby Wi-Fi router, you’ll just have to shift the latter a bit further out of the way to resolve any issues (hopefully). But of course this does not reflect particularly well on the build quality of such an expensive display.

Pierce County colleges support foreign students following Trump immigration ban

0

NewsHubOne Pierce County college is calling President Donald Trump’s executive orders banning travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries un-American, and others are voicing support for affected students and staff members.
The ban on travelers from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Somalia — whether they are immigrants or visitors — is to last 90 days. The orders also suspended new refugee admissions for 120 days and banned Syrian refugees indefinitely.
“We believe these new executive orders violate our Lutheran values and what it means to be an American,” said Pacific Lutheran University president Thomas Krise.
Though the executive orders don’t affect any PLU students or scholars, Krise said in a statement Monday that more than 17,000 students in the United States come from the seven countries.
“The PLU community joins with millions of Americans of all faiths, leaders of local and state government, and other community leaders to say we will step up our own efforts to provide direct support to immigrants and refugees who are threatened by these new policies,” Krise said.
He urged the PLU community to join him in supporting their Muslim neighbors, including PLU’s Muslim Student Association.
“Our differences are, without question, a blessing,” Krise said. “And, our institution’s grounding in the values of the Lutheran tradition instructs us that love can cast out fear.”
“These are unprecedented times that challenge us,” Tacoma Community College leaders said in a statement released Monday.
The college is committed to providing a safe and secure atmosphere for all of its students, regardless of citizenship and immigration status, according to the statement.
“We are proud of our students and staff members, who come from all over the world, who make TCC a great place to be,” the statement read.
The college has several students from the affected countries, spokeswoman Tamyra Howser said.
“Everyone is welcomed here,” she said.
TCC will continue to accept undocumented students.
“Our doors have been open for 50-plus years, and our doors will remain open,” the college said.
A rally and open mic organized Monday in University of Puget Sound’s Wheelock Student Center was themed, “NO BAN, NO WALL, NO SILENCE,” according to Gayle McIntosh, executive director of communications.
UPS President Isiaah Crawford said in a Monday statement that Trump’s executive orders have heightened concerns “for the safety and well-being of members of our campus community and of our democracy.”
McIntosh said no UPS students are from the affected countries.
Regardless of where its students come from, UPS will continue to protect them all, including undocumented ones, Crawford said.
“As an institution of higher education we have an obligation to each other and to our society to work every day to bring to fruition a welcoming and inclusive society that represents the highest ideals of American democracy,” Crawford said.
The UW is closely monitoring the changing immigration situation and how it will affect its more than 80 students from the seven countries, spokesman Victor Balta said.
UW President Ana Mari Cauce posted on her blog Sunday that the school will stand with its international students, staff members and scholars.
Cauce came to the United States as an immigrant.
“When I arrived to this country in 1959, it was as a political refugee from Cuba,” she wrote. “I then became an immigrant on a ‘green card,’ and 15 years later, a U. S. citizen proud to commit to the values that have made this country great, including its almost singular ability to welcome the world’s tired, poor and huddled masses ‘yearning to breathe free,’ as well as its artists, scholars, and scientists coming here to study or to teach.”
More than 100 people gathered on the Tacoma campus Monday to protest Trump’s orders.
