Poll: Donald Trump's pre-inauguration approval rating at record low

0

NewsHubPresident-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in this Friday with a 40-percent approval rating, according to a new poll, lower than any other recent president.
According to a CNN/ORC poll released Tuesday , Mr. Trump has an approval rating of 40 percent and a disapproval rating of 52 percent. His approval rating is less than half of President Obama’s approval rating on the eve of his inauguration in 2009: that year, Mr. Obama’s approval rating as he took office was 84 percent, with just 14 percent who disapproved.
Mr. Trump’s approval rating is also significantly lower than other recent presidents: in January 2001, President George W. Bush’s approval rating was 61 percent, and in late December of 1992, approximately a month before Bill Clinton was inaugurated, his approval rating was 67 percent.
Further questions indicate that many Americans worry about Mr. Trump’s ability to handle the responsibilities of president.
According to the poll, 48 percent of those surveyed believe Mr. Trump will be a “very poor” or “fairly poor” president — the same percentage that say he’ll be a “very good” or “fairly good” president. 9By comparison, just 18 percent said Mr. Obama would be a “very poor” or “fairly poor” president in January 2009.)
And 53 percent said Mr. Trump’s actions and statements since Election Day have made them less confident in his ability to govern, compared with just 37 percent who said they’re now more confident in Mr. Trump.
Americans are also sharply split about whether Mr. Trump’s policies will be beneficial for the direction of the country. In the poll, 48 percent said Mr. Trump’s policies will take the country in the right direction, while 49 percent said they’ll take the country in the wrong direction. Fifty-two percent said Mr. Trump’s policies do not reflect their priorities, while 46 percent said his policies do reflect their priorities.
The poll surveyed 1,000 adults by telephone from Jan. 12-15 and has a margin of error or +/- 3 percentage points.

Trump's dispute with John Lewis persists

0

NewsHubLast Updated Jan 17, 2017 11:01 AM EST
But on Tuesday, a day after he sought to calm tensions, the president-elect went off on Twitter again about the Georgia Democrat.
John Lewis said about my inauguration, „It will be the first one that I’ve missed. “ WRONG (or lie)! He boycotted Bush 43 also because he…
„thought it would be hypocritical to attend Bush’s swearing-in….he doesn’t believe Bush is the true elected president. “ Sound familiar! WP
Trump met with King’s son on the holiday marking the life of the assassinated civil rights icon, just days after the president-elect had gone on Twitter to strike back fiercely at Lewis for questioning the legitimacy of the billionaire businessman’s election as president. Lewis and the elder King were among the Big Six civil rights leaders of the 1960s.
In a post on his Twitter account, Trump had accused Lewis of being “all talk” after the Georgia Democrat said he didn’t think Trump had come to the presidency legitimately. Trump also tweeted that the Southern congressman should pay more attention to his “crime ridden” Atlanta-area district.
Trump’s comments drew widespread criticism, and have done little to reassure those uneasy about the transition from the Barack Obama, the nation’s first black president, to a president-in-waiting who struggled to connect with many nonwhite voters during the campaign.
The younger King downplayed the incident Monday, saying that “in the heat of emotion a lot of things get said on both sides.” King, who said he pressed Trump on the need for voting reform to increase participation, called their meeting “constructive.” King said that while he disagreed with the president-elect’s comments where Lewis is concerned, he believes “at some point in this nation, we’ve got to move forward.”
“I think we also have to consistently engage with pressure, public pressure,” King said. “It doesn’t happen automatically.”
Trump, who struggled for support from minority voters on Election Day, briefly joined King in the lobby of Trump Tower but ignored reporters’ shouted questions about his comments on Lewis, a civil rights legend in his own right.
The congressman said late last week he didn’t consider Trump a “legitimate president,” blaming Russian interference in the election. Lewis said he would boycott Friday’s inauguration. More than two dozen Democratic members of Congress have said they will sit out the Trump swearing-in ceremony. Among them is Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen, who said Monday “this president ‘semi-elect’ does not deserve to be president of the United States. He has not exhibited the characteristics or the values that we hold dear.”
The Martin Luther King holiday is meant to honor community service and volunteerism, and many Americans, including President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama spend part of the day undertaking a service project in their community. Trump, who canceled a planned trip to Washington, spent the day inside the Manhattan skyscraper that bears his name.
Also this week, Trump’s picks for Cabinet posts continue their trek to Capitol Hill to win support from lawmakers considering their confirmation for Cabinet positions.
On Tuesday, Republican Rep. Ryan Zinke of Montana was scheduled to make his case to be interior secretary. And Betsy Devos, Trump’s pick for education secretary, has a confirmation hearing Tuesday evening.
Trump’s tweets have stirred things up internationally, as well.
European Union nations bracing for Trump’s ascension showed defiance Monday in the face of the president-elect’s stinging comments on everything from NATO and German cars to the crumbling of the European Union.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the U. S. president-elect’s view that NATO was obsolete and his criticism that European allied members aren’t paying their fair share had “caused astonishment.”
Trump also said that Britain’s decision to leave the 28-nation EU would “end up being a great thing,” and he predicted that other countries would also leave.
At a meeting of EU ministers, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said the best response to such comments was simple – “it is the unity of the Europeans.”
In Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted: “We Europeans have our fate in our own hands.”

Orlando nightclub gunman's widow charged with helping husband ahead of attack

0

NewsHubThe widow of the Orlando nightclub gunman has been charged with helping her husband in the months leading up to the massacre that left 49 people dead.
Noor Salman, 30, is due in federal court in Oakland on Tuesday, following her arrest a day earlier on the Florida charges.
The two-count indictment accuses her of knowingly aiding and abetting her husband, Omar Mateen, in providing material support and resources to the Islamic State group between April and June of last year.
It also says she knowingly misled police and the FBI after the June 12 attack at the Pulse nightclub.
The charging document does not give additional details on Salman’s actions.
Salman is from the San Francisco Bay Area and in the aftermath of the Orlando attack that also left her husband dead she returned there with their son, whose name she has since sought to change.
She was repeatedly questioned by FBI investigators over whether she had any knowledge of her husband’s plans.
Her lawyer Linda Moreno said after her arrest that she „had no foreknowledge nor could she predict what Omar Mateen intended to do that tragic night“.
Salman told The New York Times in an interview published in November that she knew her husband had watched jihadist videos but was „unaware of everything“ regarding his intent to shoot up the club.
Salman also said he had physically abused her, which her lawyer reiterated on Monday.
„Noor has told her story of abuse at his hands,“ Ms Moreno said.
„We believe it is misguided and wrong to prosecute her and that it dishonours the memories of the victims to punish an innocent person. “
The San Francisco office of the FBI said Salman was taken into custody in Rodeo, which is the small Bay Area community where she grew up and where her family lives.
Jail records, however, say she was arrested about 30 miles away in Dublin. The reason for the discrepancy was not clear.
US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in an interview with MSNBC that „from the beginning, we were going to look at every aspect of this, of every aspect of this shooter’s life to determine not just why did he take these actions – but who else knew about them? Was anyone else involved? “
Salman met Mateen online and the two married in 2011.
They lived in Fort Pierce, Florida, at the time of the shooting.
Mateen pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in a 911 call during the three-hour standoff that ended in his death.
Forty-nine patrons were killed and another 53 were taken to hospital.
„Nothing can erase the pain we all feel about the senseless and brutal murders of 49 of our neighbours, friends, family members and loved ones,“ Orlando Police Chief John Mina said on Monday.
„But today, there is some relief in knowing that someone will be held accountable for that horrific crime. “

Putin: Spreaders of "fake" Trump news "worse than prostitutes"

NewsHubLast Updated Jan 17, 2017 8:14 AM EST
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that those who spread “fake news” about U. S. President-elect Donald Trump are “worse than prostitutes.”
The Russian leader fielded questions about the incoming U. S. president during a news conference with his Moldovan counterpart at the Kremlin.
He dismissed as a hoax a privately-prepared intelligence dossier that claimed Russian intelligence agencies had compromising material on Mr. Trump , including candid video shot at a Moscow hotel when he was there in 2013 for the filming of the Miss Universe pageant.
Putin accused the outgoing Obama administration of trying to “undermine the legitimacy” of Mr. Trump’s “convincing” election victory, suggesting it was the White House that made the dossier public.
The FBI has not confirmed any details in the 35-page document that claims to have compromising information on President-elect Donald Trump. But R…
U. S. officials have not confirmed the details of the dossier, but they have told CBS News they believe Russia may well have collected what is known as “kompromat” on Mr. Trump. It is a widely-known and well-documented practice of Putin’s intelligence services to collect such material for blackmail.
Multiple government and intelligence officials told CBS News a week ago that an addendum to the classified intelligence report on Russia’s efforts to interfere in the U. S. election contained unverified details of potentially compromising information that Russia has gathered on Mr. Trump.
The officials said the information originally came from a former British intelligence officer and was eventually turned over to U. S. intelligence, as well as other government officials last year.
U. S. intelligence is in the process of corroborating the details of what the Russians may have, but the officials told CBS News that the former British investigator and his network are considered credible. Because the information is so sensitive, the addendum was not part of the classified report that was distributed to a wider group of people last week.
President-elect Donald Trump is remaining defiant on Russia, saying „only fools“ want a bad relationship with Moscow. Gabe Debenedetti, national…
The Kremlin has dismissed the claims of compromising material on Mr. Trump as “ a fabrication and utter nonsense.”
Russia has been blamed by President Obama and myriad Democratic and Republican lawmakers — citing conclusions drawn by the U. S. intelligence community — for hacking Democratic institutions and interfering in the American presidential election process in favor of Mr. Trump.
Putin’s government has flatly rejected the allegations of hacking , also.
Mr. Trump himself finally accepted , in his first news conference since winning the election, that Russia was likely behind the hacking of the Democrat’s servers, but has dismissed as “fake news” the claims of Russian compromising material on him.
The Russian leader said Tuesday he hoped Mr. Trump’s presidency would allow for the normalization of U. S.-Russian relations.

Brexit vision laid out by Britain Prime Minister Theresa May

0

NewsHubIn a major speech, May said Britain won’t “hold on to bits of membership,” nor seek associate or partial membership in the bloc during the coming two-year negotiation period with European leaders. Those negotiations will begin once May’s government triggers Article 50 of the EU charter, which she has vowed to do by the end of March.
Richard Edelman, president and CEO of Edelman PR, explains Brexit in terms of the voters trust in the government and economy.
May said “ Brexit ” will see Britain leave the EU’s single market — but “seek greatest possible access to it,” as it exits the trade bloc.
She said her plans for Brexit cannot allow the U. K. to remain in the single market of the bloc because that would mean “not leaving the EU at all.”
May said she wanted Britain to be part of a customs union agreement with the other EU states, and remove as many trade barriers as possible. She did not provide details, but said she had an “open mind” on how to do it.
Britain is getting a new prime minister much earlier than expected. Theresa May will replace David Cameron Wednesday. May was confirmed as Britai…
She said Britain would forge a “new and equal partnership” with Europe after the result of a June national referendum saw Briton’s chose to leave the EU after more than 30 years as a founding member.
Setting out her vision for Britain, May said she wanted her country to emerge “stronger, fairer, more united and more outward-looking than before.”
The value of the British pound rallied on May’s focus on keeping Britain open to global trade. Her speech indicated her government’s desire to make the country open to new trade opportunities in the global economy.
The pound, which had been recovering Tuesday from steep losses earlier in the week, rallied to trade 1.9 percent higher at $1.2271. On Monday, it was as low as $1.20, the weakest level since October and near a 31-year low.
