67 per cent of UK firms see DevOps and agile adoption improving customer experience

0

NewsHubAgile development and DevOps is improving 67 per cent of UK organisations‘ customer experiences, a new report alleges.
The study, carried out by CA Technologies, also finds that 83 per cent of the UK believes agile and DevOps are „critical to successful digital transformation“.
Meanwhile, 38 per cent report an increase in business growth from „new revenue sources“ brought about by adopting agile and DevOps practices.
There’s further good news, as CA’s report reveals that 20 per cent of development time is cut from building and launching new applications when observing agile and DevOps.
„In the application economy brands are defined by the unique, and constantly evolving, digital experiences offered to customers,“ said Ritu Mahandru, a VP at CA Technologies.
„To succeed, UK organisations need to be ‘built to change’—putting software at the centre of everything they do, and changing the way they plan, develop and release applications and products. “
Mahandru said agile methodologies „add the voice of the customer“ to the development cycle „early and often“, enabling ongoing iterations with continuous feedback.
„DevOps practices promote collaboration between development and operations, to improve the speed and quality of application and product delivery. As this study shows, DevOps and agile are a powerful combination for better business outcomes. “
The study also showed that employee productivity is boosted by 42 per cent with DevOps, and that operational efficiency with agile specifically increases by 35 per cent, and DevOps by the same.
„Besides making a strong business case for using agile and DevOps, the research highlights the steps UK organisations need to take to leverage both practices and achieve a successful digital transformation programme,“ said Mahandru.
„This includes measuring the success of agile and DevOps using factors such as customer satisfaction, customer experience, and business growth. It also highlights the need to eliminate DevOps silos and address the skills gap as early as possible. “
There are still two days left to enter the Computing DevOps Excellence Awards, in which we’ll be seeking the bestest and brightest companies, team and individuals in this crucial pillar of the IT industry.

The Nintendo Switch could set you back $300 at Target

0

NewsHubThe Nintendo Switch is coming in March , and man, are we excited.
We’re still waiting for Nintendo to officially announce the console’s price, but Target apparently has the price listed on an internal document for $299.99 — which coverts to about £247 or AU$403.
This is strictly the realm of rumor, so we can’t say for sure if the pricing is correct. What we can say is that the initial Switch pricing will play a big role in the console’s success. Although you can play the Nintendo Switch at home or on the go, it still has to compete with powerhouse home consoles like the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One , whose prices dropped to under $300 since their initial releases at higher costs.
Although the alleged Target listing gives us an idea of the price range to expect, it’s subject to change — and Target did not respond to CNET’s request for comment. Previous Toys R Us leaks had the Switch pegged at US$250/£200/AU$320, which is a much better deal. We also don’t know whether the $300 price linked to Target includes bundled games or other features.
The „leaked“ document also listed a placeholder price for 15 different Switch games, which could mean we’ll see that many different titles come its March release. We’ve heard that the Switch will get some big-name games when it launches, like Mario, Pokemon and Zelda , but 15 different titles is a healthy number of initial games to look forward to.
Yesterday we got a potential look at some leaked Switch accessories that alluded to Zelda: Breath of the Wild launching with the console.
We expect to hear more at the Switch announcement Nintendo is holding on January 13 — and like you, we can’t wait. Follow along with CNET’s coverage on Friday!

Trump: I'll have 'hacking defense' report in 90 days

0

NewsHubAt Donald Trump’s first press conference since winning the election, he promised a report on cyberdefense in the next 90 days.
First he blasted the US government for having „the worst“ cybersecurity. Then President-elect Donald Trump vowed to do something about it.
In his first press conference since July, when he suggested that Russia should try to uncover Hillary Clinton’s missing emails , Trump promised a „major report on hacking defense“ within the next 90 days.
He’s given that mission to Rep. Mike Pompeo and Sen. Dan Coats, his picks for CIA director and National Intelligence director, respectively. Trump said the report would cover Russian hacking during the US presidential election, along with US cybersecurity flaws generally.
„How do we stop this fairly new phenomenon? Because the US is hacked by everybody,“ Trump said during his press conference Wednesday. „That includes Russia and China and…everybody. “
On Friday, US intelligence agencies said Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered „unprecedented“ hacking attacks and propaganda campaigns leading up to the 2016 elections.
The charges of election meddling represent the latest twist in the sometimes surreal saga that’s played out since the middle of last year, a tale that’s been equal parts mystery and mudslinging, internet technology and international intrigue. A wild card through the whole thing: the Julian Assange-led WikiLeaks organization, which published documents purporting to show the inner workings of the Democratic National Committee.
That saga has unfolded against the backdrop of more widespread hacking that’s exposed the personal information of private citizens, the revealing photographs of Hollywood celebrities and the trade secrets of businesses large and small.
The president-elect didn’t offer any specifics on how he’ll tackle the vulnerabilities, but he had harsh words for those who have been in charge.
Trump described the US government’s cybersecurity as „the worst,“ pointing to an analysis from April putting the government’s tech protection at the bottom of the list among 17 industries.
The former „Apprentice“ reality TV star referenced the Office of Personnel Management breach , in which Chinese hackers were said to have stolen sensitive information belonging to nearly 22 million Americans.
He said the nation’s cybersecurity was „run by people who don’t know what they’re doing. “
Trump suggested he would be relying on the titans of the US tech industry. He brought up the tech summit hosted at Trump Tower in December , which was attended by the „six top [tech] people in the world. “ He didn’t cite them by name, but the meeting featured a Silicon Valley who’s who, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Larry Page and Eric Schmidt from Google parent company Alphabet, Amazon head Jeff Bezos, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, and Intel CEO Brian Krzanich.
„We have much hacking going on,“ Trump said. „We’re going to put those minds together and we’re going to form a defense. “
Trump also shifted his position on the US intelligence report accusing Putin of ordering the hacks during the election. He told reporters Wednesday he now believes Russia was behind the cyberattacks against the Democratic National Committee. Russia has denied the charges.
But he also took pride in the Republican National Committee ’s cybersecurity, hoping to get some credit for the web safeguards during the GOP’s national convention in Cleveland.
„They tried to hack the Republican National Committee and they were unable to break through,“ Trump said. „We have to do that for our country. „

Facebook's 'journalism project' seeks to strengthen online news

0

NewsHubFacebook wants to play a more active role in shaping how you consume news.
Facebook is taking more responsibility over its role in the media industry.
The social network on Wednesday announced a new initiative called the Journalism Project, which seeks to put Facebook on steadier footing with the news industry. As part of the effort, the social network will work to help train journalists on how to use Facebook as a reporting tool and assist the public in figuring out how to sniff out misinformation.
„We know that our community values sharing and discussing ideas and news,“ Fidji Simo, director of product for the project, wrote in a blog post. „And as a part of our service, we care a great deal about making sure that a healthy news ecosystem and journalism can thrive. “
The initiative is part of an about-face for Facebook, which for a long time shrugged off its influence on the news and downplayed the impact of misinformation circulated on Facebook on the 2016 presidential election. The company is now acknowledging the significant role it plays in the consumption of news online, along with its ability to shape journalism’s future.
The project is also in part an olive branch from Facebook to the media industry, which has reeled as news has moved from print to the internet. A big part of that upheaval has been Facebook, with its massive influence in distributing news to its 1.79 billion monthly visitors. Facebook’s ever-changing algorithms play a large role in what people see on the social network, and therefore affect news outlets‘ viewership and revenue.
The social media giant’s project has three aspects. First is the development of news „products“ between Facebook and media outlets, such as new storytelling formats. Facebook also offered the example of a German media outlet that developed a free subscription trial period for Facebook users.
Next is a plan to offer tools and „best practices“ training to journalists. This includes collaborations with the Knight Foundation, the Detroit Journalism Cooperative and the Institute for Nonprofit News. In addition, a Facebook-owned tool called CrowdTangle, which measures social performance, will now be free to Facebook’s media partners.
The final focus is on Facebook’s readers, with an emphasis on promoting media literacy. Facebook pointed to new tools designed to make it easier to report bogus news stories , along with its efforts to remove financial incentives that motivate spamming, and a collaboration with third-party fact-checking groups to help identify hoaxes.
The Journalism Project is only the latest move Facebook has made to try to ease tensions with the news media. Last week, the social network hired former CNN anchor Campbell Brown to be its head of news partnerships. In the role, she’s meant to be a liaison who helps media outlets work more effectively with Facebook.

abschaffen will.
