New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday that New Yorkers will be at risk of terror if Attorney General Jeff Sessions follows through on cutting federal law enforcement grants to sanctuary cities.
Sessions appeared at the White House to say that jurisdictions that ignore immigration detainers will lose Department of Justice grants, which total $4.1 billion for the upcoming fiscal year.
“President Trump’s latest threat changes nothing. We will remain a city welcoming of immigrants who have helped make our city the safest big city in the nation,” de Blasio said in response. “Any attempt to cut NYPD funding for the nation’s top terror target will be aggressively fought in court. We won’t back down from protecting New Yorkers from terror – or from an overzealous administration fixated on xenophobia and needless division.”
The attorney general, on the other hand, argued that sanctuary cities make America more dangerous. “Countless Americans would be alive today if these policies of sanctuary cities were ended,” Sessions said.
He pointed to a recent report from the Department of Homeland Security which highlighted over 200 cases of local law enforcement agencies refusing to turn serious criminals over to federal immigration officers.

After months of Raiders owner Mark Davis fighting to move the team from Oakland, he was dealt a victory on Monday, when the NFL owners approved the team’s move to Las Vegas.
Only one team voted against the relocation of the Raiders, according to ESPN.
Davis issued the following statement, celebrating the result:
“My father always said, ‘the greatness of the Raiders is in its future,’ and the opportunity to build a world-class stadium in the entertainment capital of the world is a significant step toward achieving that greatness. I would like to thank Commissioner Goodell, the National Football League and my 31 partners. I would also like to thank Governor Brian Sandoval and the Nevada Legislature for their commitment. Finally, I would like to thank Sheldon Adelson for his vision and leadership, without which this project never would have become a reality.
Complicating matters is the fact the $1.7 billion stadium will take time to build. So the Raiders will play in the Coliseum for the next two seasons, and possibly in 2019 — although Roger Goodell was less warm to that idea.
“The Raiders were born in Oakland and Oakland will always be part of our DNA. We know that some fans will be disappointed and even angry, but we hope that they do not direct that frustration to the players, coaches and staff. We plan to play at the Coliseum in 2017 and 2018, and hope to stay there as the Oakland Raiders until the new stadium opens. We would love nothing more than to bring a championship back to the Bay Area.”
The team might have Oakland in its DNA, but it’s true nature was chasing the most money, which breaks down to $750 million in public funding that The Town was never going to match. The Raiders and the league will account for $500 million and the Bank of America is bridging the remaining gap in loans.
Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf’s Hail Mary to keep the Raiders fell flat last week, when Goodell responded with a letter that said the East Bay city wasn’t going to work because, “All of these efforts, ours and yours, have not yet identified a viable solution.”
Quarterback and face of the franchise Derek Carr said he was “overwhelmed by emotion” by the decision.
Goodell never liked the idea of playing in Las Vegas, a city inextricably tied to gambling.
NFL officials aren’t allowed to visit Sin City during the season, now the league will have at least eight games a season in it.
Casinos were already celebrating the Raiders coming to town on Monday:
“We are looking forward to the opening kickoff,” Joe Asher, chief executive officer of William Hill US said in a statement.
“This is further evidence that the myth that legalized sports betting somehow hurts the game is nothing more than fake news.”
So, to summarize: Mark Davis – happy; Roger Goodell – along for the ride; sports books – ecstatic; Oakland – shafted by the Raiders for a second time.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes told reporters Monday night he plans to stay on as chairman of the committee, despite calls from Democratic leadership for him to step down or recuse himself from the Russia election probe.
“Everything is politics here,” Nunes told reporters as described by a journalist from Voice of America.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on House Speaker Paul Ryan to replace Nunes after news broke that the California House Republican visited the White House to view sensitive material related to Obama era surveillance of the Trump transition team one day before he discussed the topic with reporters last week.
“Now we learn this morning that Chairman Nunes was at the White House a day before that event,” Schumer said. “Doing what? We don’t know…it could very well be the case that Chairman Nunes was briefing members of the administration about an investigation of which they are subject.”
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called for Nunes to recuse himself from the Russia investigation his committee is involved in.
“Speaker Ryan must insist that Chairman Nunes at least recuse himself from the Trump-Russia investigation immediately,” Pelosi said in a statement. “That leadership is long overdue.”
Other Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee called for Ryan to replace Nunes, including committee ranking member Adam Schiff, California Rep. Jackie Speier, and California Rep. Eric Swalwell.

“I had been working this for a long time with many difference sources and needed a place that I could actually finally go because I knew what I was looking for and could actually get access to what I needed to see,” Nunes said in a Monday interview with CNN.

Tuesday’s visit to the White House complex was the start of several days of unusual meetings and conflicting disclosures.
On Wednesday, Nunes revealed to the press that he had seen evidence that the Obama administration had intercepted communications involving members of the Trump transition team.
Nunes then returned to the White House to personally brief the president, before disclosing the information to members of his own committee.
On Thursday, he was forced to apologize for keeping them in the dark.

By Friday, Nunes seemed less certain of his claims. “It’s hard to know where the information came from until you get the reports and have time to go through them and see all the sourcing of the documents,” he said.
Nunes has denied that his source is from the White House.
On Monday, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said even he doesn’t know where the information came from.
“I don’t know, and that’s something that frankly, I don’t even know that he discussed with the president,” he said.

Democrats say Nunes’ behavior makes it impossible for him to continue to lead an impartial investigation into Russian involvement with Trump associates.
“Chairman Nunes is falling down on the job, and seems to be more interested in protecting the president than in seeking the truth,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer, the minority leader.
Late Monday, Nunes’ Democratic counterpart on the Intel committee, Rep. Adam Schiff, called on Nunes to recuse himself from any further invovlement in the Russia investigation. Rep. Nancy Pelosi followed suit.

Late Monday, a spokesperson for House Speaker Paul Ryan sent the following statement to CBS News:
“Speaker Ryan has full confidence that Chairman Nunes is conducting a thorough, fair, and credible investigation.”
It is unclear why Nunes chose to view the classified information at a secure location on White House grounds. There are similar facilities in other government buildings.
Nunes says he needed access to a specific computer network that wasn’t available on Capitol Hill.
