Trump HUD Nominee Ben Carson Testifies About His Own 'Housing Insecurity'

Former Republican presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson today cited his childhood of „housing insecurity“ during remarks on Capitol Hill , where he’s facing the U. S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs for a hearing on his nomination to be the next secretary of the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Carson, who often spoke on the campaign trail about growing up with an illiterate single mother in Detroit, referenced her in his opening statement.
“She didn’t have any skills, basically a third-grade education and we had no place to live,“ he said. „She couldn’t afford the house so we ended up moving to Boston, moving in with relatives. So I have actually in my life understood what housing insecurity was. And we were there in Boston for a couple of years.”
Carson later pledged to undertake a „listening tour“ across the country to better understand the issues he would face as HUD secretary.
In a Dec. 5 statement announcing his intention to nominate Carson, Trump said, „Ben Carson has a brilliant mind and is passionate about strengthening communities and families within those communities. We have talked at length about my urban renewal agenda and our message of economic revival, very much including our inner cities. „
The president-elect added of Carson, who now sits on Trump’s transition team as a vice chair, „Ben shares my optimism about the future of our country and is part of ensuring that this is a Presidency representing all Americans. „

Carson, 65, said in that statement, „I am honored to accept the opportunity to serve our country in the Trump administration. I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly by strengthening communities that are most in need. We have much work to do in enhancing every aspect of our nation and ensuring that our nation’s housing needs are met. „

Carson will field questions on housing policy and affordable housing and will likely face questions surrounding his lack of government experience and previous claims that he would feel like “a fish out of water” running a government agency.
“Having me as a federal bureaucrat would be like a fish out of water, quite frankly,” Carson told the Washington Post before being offered the position.
Carson has been holding mock hearings and comprehensive information sessions, along with meetings with members of Congress on Capitol Hill to get up to speed on the agency and the issues, according to those familiar with his preparations.
Among those advising Carson are former Florida Senator Mel Martinez and Alphonso Jackson, the agency’s secretary under President George W. Bush.
Martinez told ABC News that Carson was „very much on top of the issues“ of housing policy, and argued his lack of government experience and resume heading into the role isn’t a liability, but an asset, calling it „purposeful. „
„I think it’s a common element in a lot of this administration,“ he said.
Republican consultant Gianno Caldwell told ABC News there are questions surrounding Carson’s qualifications for the post, but added that Carson has been preparing for weeks.
“They have been prepping for weeks and meeting with members of Congress on the Hill since he got nominated,“ Caldwell said. „They are very excited, there are lot of folks that believe he’s going to do a very good job – put together an excellent team, there are questions surrounding his qualifications – but he’s been prepping for weeks. „

Republican-led Senate takes first step to repeal ‘Obamacare’

WASHINGTON (AP) – Congress is poised to complete its initial step toward dismantling President Barack Obama’s health care law, as Republicans divided over how to replace it face pressure from Donald Trump for quick action.
By a near party-line 51-48 vote early Thursday, the GOP -run Senate approved a budget that eases the way for action on subsequent repeal legislation as soon as next month.
The Republican-controlled House planned to complete the budget on Friday, even amid misgivings by some GOP lawmakers. Aiming to build momentum, the office of House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., distributed an email underscoring support for the measure by the conservative group Heritage Action.
“We must act quickly to bring relief to the American people,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
The president-elect oozed confidence at a news conference on Wednesday, promising his incoming administration would soon reveal a plan to both repeal so-called Obamacare and replace it with legislation to “get health care taken care of in this country.”
“We’re going to do repeal and replace, very complicated stuff,” Trump told reporters, adding that both elements would pass virtually at the same time. That promise, however, will be almost impossible to fulfill in the complicated web of Congress, where GOP leaders must navigate complex Senate rules, united Democratic opposition and substantive policy disagreements among Republicans.
Passage of Thursday’s measure would permit follow-up legislation to escape the threat of a filibuster by Senate Democrats. Republicans are not close to agreement among themselves on what any Obamacare replacement would look like, however.
Republicans plan to get legislation voiding Obama’s law and replacing parts of it to Trump by the end of February, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said Wednesday on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” a conservative radio program. Other Republicans have said they expect the process to take longer.
The 2010 law extended health insurance to some 20 million Americans, prevented insurers from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions and steered billions of dollars to states for the Medicaid health program for the poor. Republicans fought the effort tooth and nail and voter opposition to Obamacare helped carry the party to impressive wins in 2010, 2014 and last year.
Thursday’s Senate procedural vote will set up special budget rules that will allow the repeal vote to take place with a simple majority in the 100-member Senate, instead of the 60 votes required to move most legislation.
That means Republicans, who control 52 seats, can push through repeal legislation without Democratic cooperation. They’re also discussing whether there are some elements of a replacement bill that could get through at the same time with a simple majority. But for many elements of a new health care law, Republicans are likely to need 60 votes and Democratic support, and at this point the two parties aren’t even talking.
Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, unhappy that the measure endorsed huge budget deficits, was the sole Republican to vote against it.
Increasing numbers of Republicans have expressed anxiety over obliterating the law without a replacement to show voters.
Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she wants at least to see “a detailed framework” of a GOP alternative health care plan before voting on repeal. She said Republicans would risk “people falling through the cracks or causing turmoil in insurance markets” if lawmakers voided Obama’s statute without a replacement in hand.
Collins was among a handful of Republicans to occasionally break ranks to support some Democratic amendments aimed at supporting such things as rural hospitals and a mandate to cover patients with pre-existing medical conditions. They were all shot down by majority Republicans anyway.
In the House, many members of the conservative Freedom Caucus were insisting on first learning details about what a GOP substitute would look like – or putting some elements of the replacement measure in the repeal bill.
“We need to be voting for a replacement plan at the same time that we vote for repeal,” said Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N. C., an influential conservative.
Some more moderate House Republicans were unhappy, too, including Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N. J., a leader of GOP centrists in the House Tuesday Group. He said he would oppose the budget because there was too little information about the replacement, including whether people receiving expanded Medicaid coverage or health care subsidies under the existing law would be protected.
“We’re loading a gun here,” MacArthur said. “I want to know where it’s pointed before we start the process.”

Elbphilharmonie: Hamburg, deine Perle

Am Kaiserkai vor einer der vielen Sicherheitsabsperrungen stehen zwei Rentner mit Pappschildern. Er: „Erst 70, dann 700 Mio. Steuern! “ Sie: „Suche Karte. “ So sieht’s aus am Abend der Elbphilharmonie-Eröffnung. Die Verzögerungen, absurden Kostensteigerungen und öffentlichen Zankereien während der Bauphase des Konzerthauses stecken den Hamburgern in den Knochen. Und trotzdem können sie sich nur schwer der Anziehungskraft dieses architektonischen Glanzstücks entziehen. Wenn es schon von außen so schön ist, mit seinem gleißenden, sich schürzenden und auftürmenden Glaskorpus, wie wird es dann erst innen sein, wo die rund um die Bühne geschwungenen Ränge in ihrer weißen Gipshaut warm leuchten wie die Sinterterrassen von Pamukkale? Ja, und wie klingt er denn nun, der teuerste Musiksaal der Welt?
200.000 Menschen haben sich um Gratistickets für die beiden Eröffnungskonzerte beworben. Heute, am 11. Januar, dürfen 500 von ihnen zusammen mit 1.600 geladenen Gästen das Haus einweihen. Das macht man nach zehnjähriger Wartezeit und mindestens 110 Meter hohen Erwartungen nicht einfach mit Musik, sondern natürlich vorweg mit einem Festakt samt höchsten politischen und gesellschaftlichen Würdenträgern.
Die Bundeskanzlerin, der Bundestagspräsident, der vormalige Bundespräsident, der Bundesverteidigungsminister und der Vorsitzende des Bundesverfassungsgerichts sitzen in der ersten Reihe, während auf der Bühne erstaunlich lauwarme Reden gehalten werden. Bürgermeister Olaf Scholz unbeteiligt und seltsam bedrückt. Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck etwas enthusiastischer, aber mahnend. Der Architekt Jacques Herzog dankbar und ermattet. Der Generalintendant Christoph Lieben-Seutter hausmeisterlich hölzern. Im übrigen Saal: Günter Netzer, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Hannelore und Nina Hoger, Fatih Akin, Charly Hübner, John Neumeier, Jorge González, dazu Chanel-Täschchen, Dior-Ohrringe, Louboutin-Stilettos, Echtpelz, Pailletten, schwarze Spitze, pinker Taft und einiges aus Bayreuths Kostümfundus.
Des Kaisers neue Kleider, jeder im Publikum spürt den Druck: Der teuerste Konzertsaal sollte auch der beste sein. Aber was, wenn ich es selbst nicht höre? Was, wenn mich dieser lang ersehnte Abend nicht erschüttert?
Zum Glück dämpfen schon die ersten Takte von Beethovens Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus die Zweifel. Der musikalische Hausherr Thomas Hengelbrock dirigiert das NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, und man merkt es sofort: ein glasklarer Klang von erstaunlicher dynamischer Bandbreite, überdeutlich in den Akzenten, voll und weich im Tutti. Das Programm des Eröffnungskonzerts wirbelt durch die Epochen ohne Zäsur. Moderne fließt hinüber in den Barock, Spätromantik reicht Zeitgenössischem die Hand. Elf längere und kürzere Werke dürfen in diesem Rahmen unter Beweis stellen, was der Saal alles kann. Er liebt die sinfonische Süffigkeit von Wagner und Brahms ebenso wie die harten Blech- und Schlagwerkartikulationen von Rihm und Zimmermann. Er trägt den Solooboisten, der oben aus dem Publikumsraum seine einsame Britten-Meditation ins Rund der Weinberghänge bläst, wie auch das kleine Barockensemble mit fünfstimmigem Gesang und Begleitung. Man hört, dass es gut ist, und man hört alles. Eben auch das konzentrierte Atmen der Nachbarin und das im Mittelrang soeben entfaltete Taschentuch.
Der Große Saal der Elbphilharmonie umarmt wohl tatsächlich alle unverstärkten Musiken und Besetzungen. Aber er ist durchaus streng: Exzellenz im Spiel wird belohnt, Mittelmäßigkeit und Schwächen treten umso deutlicher hervor. Der Eröffnungsabend lässt beides erahnen.

Geldautomat auf den Schienen bringt Güterzug zum Entgleisen

Dinslaken (dpa) – Ein Güterzug ist in Dinslaken entgleist, nachdem Unbekannte einen Geldautomaten auf die Schienen gelegt haben. Der Triebwagen sei am Morgen gegen den Automaten geprallt und aus den Schienen gehoben worden, sagte ein Sprecher der Bundespolizei.
Der Lokführer und die zwei Begleiter blieben unverletzt. Der Geldautomat wurde bei dem Aufprall auseinandergerissen, das Geld verteilte sich über die Gleise. Polizisten sammelten Münzen und Scheine ein. Die Täter hätten kein Geld erbeutet, sagte der Sprecher.
Der Zug blockierte in den Morgenstunden ein Gleis im Dinslakener Bahnhof, Einsatzkräfte sperrten zeitweise weitere Schienen. Der Regional- und Fernverkehr wurden beeinträchtigt, etwa die ICE-Linie zwischen Amsterdam und Frankfurt. Nach Angaben der Bahn konnte ein Gleis am Morgen wieder freigegeben werden. Auch im Regionalverkehr fuhren die Züge wieder – wenn auch mit Verspätung.
Ermittler sicherten Spuren am Tatort. Nach ersten Erkenntnissen wollten die Täter den Geldautomaten durch den Aufprall zerstören, um an das Geld im Inneren zu gelangen. Der Güterzug hatte unter anderem Gas und eine entzündliche Flüssigkeit geladen. Ausgetreten ist nach Polizeiangaben keiner der Stoffe.

Trump tritt erstmals als Präsident vor die Presse – und teilt kräftig aus

Eine gute Woche vor Beginn seiner Präsidentschaft hat sich Donald Trump in einen offenen Schlagabtausch mit den US-Medien begeben. Seine Weigerung, eine Frage von CNN-Reporter Jim Acosta anzunehmen, hat eine Diskussion um den Umgang mit Pressefreiheit in Trumps künftiger Regierung ausgelöst. CNN hatte zuvor über angebliche Verwicklungen Trumps in Russland berichtet. „Sie nicht. Sie sind Fakenews“, sagte Trump auf die wiederkehrende Bitte des Reporters, eine Frage stellen zu dürfen.
Trump hatte zuvor empört auf unbewiesene Vorwürfe reagiert, Russland besitze belastendes Material gegen ihn und könnte ihn somit in der Hand haben. Die Berichte seien Unsinn, sagte der künftige Präsident. «Kranke Leute haben diesen Scheiß zusammengeschrieben.» Mindestens eine in den Berichten genannte Person sei zum fraglichen Zeitpunkt nicht wie berichtet im Ausland gewesen. Auch die US-Geheimdienste stuften die Informationen als nicht stichhaltig ein.
Im Kern geht es um Informationen aus dem Privatleben Trumps und zu seinen Geschäftsbeziehungen nach Russland. In den zunächst als nicht stichhaltig eingestuften Memos, über die es angeblich eine zweiseitige Zusammenfassung bei den US-Geheimdiensten gibt, soll es um Vorwürfe im Zusammenhang mit Moskauer Prostituierten im Jahr 2013 gehen. Ferner sollen sie Informationen zu Trumps Geschäftsbeziehungen nach Russland enthalten. Außerdem sollen Leute aus Trumps Wahlkampfteam im Wahlkampf ständige Kontakte nach Moskau unterhalten haben.
Der künftige Präsident räumte am Mittwoch erstmals ein, dass auch er Russland hinter Hackerangriffen während des Wahlkampfes sieht. «Was das Hacking angeht: Ich denke, es war Russland», sagte Trump. Er sei aber auch der Meinung, dass es noch von anderen Ländern Hackerangriffe auf die USA gegeben habe. Trump hatte bislang Zweifel an der Einschätzung der amerikanischen Geheimdienste geäußert, wonach Russland hinter den Angriffen auf Computer der Demokraten stand.
Trump hatte sich in den vergangenen Wochen für ein besseres Verhältnis zu Russland ausgesprochen. «Wir werden sehen, was ich für ein Verhältnis zu Russland haben werde», sagte er nun. Es sei nicht sicher, wie das aussehen werde. Er hoffe, dass er mit dem russischen Präsidenten Wladimir Putin auskommen werde. Es könne aber auch sein, dass das nicht der Fall sein werde. In jedem Fall werde Russland vor den USA unter seiner Führung mehr Respekt haben als bisher, kündigte er an.
Trump will sein Firmenimperium künftig von seinen Söhnen führen lassen. Es werde eine Struktur haben, die ihn komplett vom Management enthebe. Seine Tochter Ivanka wird dabei weder eine Position im Weißen Haus noch im Unternehmen bekommen. Trumps Anwältin sagte, die Amerikaner könnten sicher sein, dass Trump als Präsident eine Kollision mit seinen Interessen als Immobilienunternehmer vermeiden werde. Der Chef des US-Büros für Regierungs-Ethik, Walter Shaub, bezeichnete die Pläne als bedeutungslos. Die Zweifel hinsichtlich Interessenkonflikten würden in keiner Weise ausgeräumt.
Trump umriss zugleich Prioritäten für die ersten Amtstage. Er versprach, unmittelbar nach dem 20. Januar mit Mexiko Verhandlungen über den Bau einer Mauer zu dem südlichen Nachbarland zu beginnen. Mexikos Präsident Enrique Peña Nieto wies die Mauer-Pläne Trumps umgehend zurück. «Natürlich wird Mexiko nicht für die Mauer bezahlen», sagte er am Mittwoch bei der Jahrestagung des diplomatischen Korps in Mexiko-Stadt.
Außerdem will Trump innerhalb weniger Wochen seinen Kandidaten für den vakanten Posten am Obersten Gerichtshof, dem Supreme Court, bekannt geben.

Mexiko will «natürlich nicht» für Grenzmauer bezahlen

Mexiko-Stadt (dpa) – Die Pläne des künftigen US-Präsidenten Donald Trump zum Bau einer Mauer an der Grenze zu Mexiko sorgen für ein Fernduell zwischen den Nachbarn.
„Natürlich wird Mexiko nicht für die Mauer bezahlen“, sagte Mexikos Staatschef Enrique Peña Nieto bei der Jahrestagung des diplomatischen Korps in Mexiko-Stadt. Nur Stunden zuvor hatte Trump auf einer
Pressekonferenz in New York seinen Plan bekräftigt, eine Mauer an der Grenze zu Mexiko zu errichten, um die illegale Einwanderung zu stoppen.
„Wir werden eine Mauer bauen“, sagte der künftige US-Präsident. „Ich könnte eineinhalb Jahre warten, bis wir die Verhandlungen beenden, die direkt nach meinem Amtsantritt beginnen werden. Aber ich will nicht warten. Wir werden anfangen zu bauen. Auf irgendeine Art und Weise wird uns Mexiko für die Kosten der Mauer entschädigen. Sei es über eine Steuer oder eine Zahlung. “
Auch bei anderen Themen teilte Trump wieder ordentlich gegen das Nachbarland aus. „Mexiko nutzt uns aus. Das dürfen wir nicht zulassen“, sagte der künftige US-Präsident. Besonders US-Firmen, die Produktionsstandorte nach Mexiko verlegen, sind ihm ein Dorn im Auge. Solche Unternehmen würden künftig mit hohen Strafzöllen belegt, sagte er. Zuletzt hatte der Autokonzern Ford bereits ein Großprojekt in Mexiko beerdigt und stattdessen Investitionen in den USA angekündigt.
„Die neue Etappe in den bilateralen Beziehungen zwischen den USA und Mexiko wird eine große Herausforderung in diesem Jahr werden“, sagte Peña Nieto vor den Botschaftern und Konsuln. „Es ist offensichtlich, dass wir einige Meinungsverschiedenheiten mit der künftigen Regierung der Vereinigten Staaten haben. “
Die Beziehungen zwischen den USA und Mexiko sind eng und ambivalent. Die beiden Länder trennt die verkehrsreichste Grenze der Welt. Das Handelsvolumen beträgt mehr als 532 Milliarden US-Dollar (rund 502 Mrd Euro), der Großteil der mexikanischen Exporte geht in das Nachbarland im Norden. 34,6 Millionen Menschen mit mexikanischen Wurzeln leben in den Vereinigten Staaten. Probleme wie die organisierte Kriminalität und illegale Migration lassen sich allerdings nur gemeinsam lösen.
„Ich respektiere die Regierung von Mexiko. Ich respektiere das mexikanische Volk. Ich liebe das mexikanische Volk“, sagte Trump am Mittwoch auf seiner Pressekonferenz. „Ich habe viele Mexikaner, die für mich arbeiten. Sie sind phänomenal. “ Im Wahlkampf diffamierte er Mexikaner noch als Drogenhändler und Vergewaltiger.
Peña Nieto hatte Trump schon während des Wahlkampfes in Mexiko-Stadt empfangen. Der Kurztrip endete in einem PR-Desaster für die mexikanische Regierung. Trump sprach im Präsidentenpalast von seinen Mauerplänen, Peña Nieto stand sprachlos daneben. Das nahmen ihm viele Mexikaner übel.
„Alle Themen, die unsere bilaterale Beziehung bestimmen, stehen nun zur Debatte“, sagte der mexikanische Präsident am Mittwoch. „Niemals werden wir hinnehmen, dass unsere Würde als Land und als Mexikaner angegriffen wird. “
Der Ton zwischen Washington und Mexiko-Stadt dürfte nach Trumps Amtsantritt Ende kommender Woche schärfer werden. „Alles deutet darauf hin, dass Trump zu seinen Positionen gegenüber Mexiko steht, dass er seine Haltung nicht geändert hat“, sagte der Politikwissenschaftler José Antonio Crespo vom Forschungszentrum CIDE der Deutschen Presse-Agentur. „Die mexikanische Regierung sollte sich auf Konfrontationen und harte Verhandlungen einstellen. „

Deutsche Wirtschaft steigert Wachstumstempo 2016

Berlin/Wiesbaden (dpa) – Der kräftige Konsum hat der deutschen Wirtschaft 2016 das stärkste Wachstum seit fünf Jahren beschert.
Das Bruttoinlandsprodukt (BIP) legte um 1,9 Prozent zu, wie das Statistische Bundesamt am Donnerstag in Berlin anhand vorläufiger Zahlen mitteilte. Ein deutlich stärkeres Wirtschaftswachstum gab es zuletzt 2010 (plus 4,1 Prozent) und 2011 (plus 3,7 Prozent) – damals musste sich die deutsche Wirtschaft allerdings aus der tiefen Rezession des globalen Krisenjahres 2009 emporarbeiten.
Zum Jahresende gewann die deutsche Wirtschaft noch einmal an Tempo. Nach ersten Schätzungen der Wiesbadener Statistiker stieg das BIP in den letzten drei Monaten 2016 im Vergleich zum Vorquartal um ungefähr ein halbes Prozent. Die Vorquartale waren schwächer ausgefallen.
Die Kauflust der Verbraucher und die Ausgaben des Staates, auch für die Unterbringung Hunderttausender Flüchtlinge trugen maßgeblich zum Wachstum im vergangenen Jahr bei. Die staatlichen Konsumausgaben erhöhten sich binnen Jahresfrist von 2,7 auf 4,2 Prozent.
Als entscheidende konjunkturelle Stütze mit 53,5 Prozent der gesamten Wirtschaftsleistung erwies sich abermals der Konsum der privaten Haushalte, der 2016 wie im Vorjahr um 2,0 Prozent zulegte. Vielen Verbrauchern sitzt das Geld locker, weil Sparen kaum noch mit Zinsen belohnt wird. Die niedrige Inflation erhöht die Kaufkraft zusätzlich – auch wenn die Teuerung im Dezember wegen gestiegener Energiepreise anzog. Zudem ist die Lage auf dem Arbeitsmarkt ist historisch günstig. Volkswirte gehen davon aus, dass der Konsum auch im laufenden Jahr die Hauptstütze des deutschen Wirtschaftsaufschwungs bleiben wird.
Auch der anhaltende Immobilienboom sorgte für Schwung. Zudem investierten Unternehmen 1,7 Prozent mehr in Maschinen und Fahrzeuge. Keine Wachstumsimpulse kamen dagegen vom Außenhandel – obwohl Deutschlands Exporteure nach jüngsten Berechnungen des Bundesamtes für das Gesamtjahr 2016 auf ein Rekordergebnis zusteuern. Allerdings legten die Importe im vergangenen Jahr stärker zu als die Ausfuhren.
Die gute Konjunktur füllte auch die öffentlichen Kassen. Der deutsche Staat nahm nach Berechnungen der Statistiker 2016 erneut mehr Geld ein als er ausgab, obwohl er für die Versorgung und Unterbringung der Flüchtlinge viel Geld in die Hand nehmen musste. Der Überschuss von Bund, Ländern, Gemeinden und Sozialkassen machte unter dem Strich 0,6 Prozent des BIP aus, nach 0,7 und 0,3 Prozent in den beiden Vorjahren. Ein wenn auch minimales Defizit hatte Deutschland zuletzt 2013 verbucht.

Android Wear 2.0 is coming in early February

An email sent out to Android Wear developers has revealed that Android Wear 2.0, a major upgrade to the platform announced at Google I/O back in May 2016, will be released in early February 2017. Previously the update was expected to launch in „early 2017“.
Developer previews for Android Wear 2.0 have been available since the middle of 2016, with Google originally eyeing an end-of-2016 launch for the update. It’s still not clear exactly why Google delayed Android Wear 2.0 to 2017, but more time to polish the operating system and its apps is usually a good thing.
There has been a serious lull in the smartwatch industry for the best part of a year. Several major OEMs that invested in the original Android Wear platform, such as Motorola and Huawei, have taken an indefinite break from making new devices. There were some low key Android Wear smartwatch launches at this year’s CES, but for the most part, interest in the platform and smartwatches in general has waned significantly.
Android Wear 2.0 should breathe some life into smartwatches when it launches in February, as it will bring an overdue interface overhaul to Wear, along with new fitness features and the introduction of the Play Store. Several new Android Wear smartwatches should hit the market around the launch of Wear 2.0, including the chunky outdoor-oriented Casio WSD-F20 .

HTC's U Ultra flagship is an epic fail

HTC has a serious problem: it cannot deliver a flagship worth getting excited about. A while back, the company at least tried to do things differently, to get consumers talking, but lately it seems happy just to have a new high-end smartphone on the market — even if everyone knows it’s way behind the competition.
Last year’s flagship, called HTC 10 , was better than its most-recent predecessors, but it failed to stand out against devices like Apple’s iPhone 6s and Samsung’s Galaxy S7. So no one cared about it. This year’s HTC U Ultra is no different — it’s probably the most uninspiring device in its segment. How disappointing.
First off, the name is terrible. It’s what you’d expect an aspiring smartphone maker to name its budget flagship. What does „U Ultra“ even mean? I have no idea. And it looks like HTC doesn’t either, judging by how its press release starts.
What is that? I think that a preschooler could come up with something better.
Moving on to the actual device, the U Ultra feels similar to the LG V20 , save for the exterior design and the fact that it’s unveiled a couple of months too late. It’s got a 5.7-inch main display, with a resolution of 1,440 by 2,560 and Gorilla Glass 5 on top or sapphire, depending on the storage option (64GB or 128GB, respectively).
The secondary screen is a 2.05-inch unit, with a resolution of 1,040 by 160, and it can show contacts, favorite apps, reminders, notifications and more.
Most of the hardware is fine, but if you look at HTC’s choice of processor — Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 — you will realize that it only has a couple of months before the Android-toting competition wipes the floor with it in terms of performance. Actually, that’s not true, because it goes on sale in mid-March in US.
In the smartphone market, if you are an Android maker that launches a new flagship just before a new high-end processor goes on sale — namely, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 830 — you have already lost control of the narrative. It doesn’t help when the battery is a 3,000mAh unit. That doesn’t give me confidence regarding battery life, though there’s Quick Charge 3.0 support for topping it quickly.
The likes of Samsung, Xiaomi and LG will have faster devices in a few months. Remember, MWC 2017 kicks off next month, and we are bound to see Snapdragon 830-toting flagships then — and with more than the 4GB of RAM the U Ultra has. Do you believe an older generation processor and subpar battery and RAM will help when the U Ultra is pitted against its new rivals? I don’t think so.
Not even the software is the latest, because HTC will ship the U Ultra with Android 7.0 Nougat (and its Sense skin on top). Google already introduced version 7.1, and we have no idea when HTC will update the U Ultra to the latest release. Fellow Android vendors have already started to roll out Android 7.0 Nougat, which makes things even more complicated for HTC.
At least the optics appear to be competitive.
HTC equipped the U Ultra with a 12MP UltraPixel 2 main camera, with optical image stabilization, f/1.8 lens, laser and phase-detection autofocus, and 4K video recording. It’s got all the software features you’d expect from HTC, including Zoe. There’s also RAW support, if you want the best image quality.
On the front, there’s a 16 MP UltraPixel camera that can record videos up to 1080p in quality. There’s the obligatory selfie-mode included, which selfie lovers will probably appreciate. But there’s nothing groundbreaking here.
HTC did do something right, however, when it chose to include a very generous base storage option. I think that 64GB is more than enough to start, and the fact that it can be extended using a microSD is commendable. There’s even Flex Storage support, which makes the storage (both internal and external) appear as a single device in Android.
Needless to say, there’s 4G LTE and a dual-SIM option, the usual array of sensors, and a bunch of software add-ons to give users more control and flexibility. One of the most-interesting features is Sense Companion, which gives you tips on restaurants, what to wear depending on the weather and when to recharge your U Ultra to make sure you don’t run out of battery soon, among other things.
There’s also BoomSound speakers, a promising audio technology called USonic, USB Type-C, and no headphone jack. But, there’s nothing here to make your jaw drop and say „I really, really want this! “ Not even the fact that it’s got a glass back impresses these days. The Galaxy S7 has one too, remember? Other devices offer metal, which feels just as premium (and is more durable). Available colors include black, blue and white in US, while internationally it will also be sold in pink.
Maybe I’m being too harsh, but it’s because I believe HTC can and should do more to attract consumers. It used to come up with such interesting devices in the past that I can’t help but feel disappointed by what it announces nowadays. I don’t expect it to take things too far, but at least give us a flagship has something special and that will not feel like last year’s hardware a few months after launch.
Is that too much to ask considering it is offered for $749? That’s a lot of money. It’s in the same range as an iPhone 7 Plus or a Galaxy S7 edge, and both look more appealing.
I rest my case.

It’s finally 2017 and means the new Nintendo console will be released soon. We already know a fair bit about the device codenamed NX, but the Japanese gaming giant will reveal further details in its Nintendo Direct. Here’s how to watch the Nintendo Switch Presentation live video stream from Tokyo and what time it starts. Nintendo Direct is the legendary Japanese gaming company’s way of communicating with both the press and fans. It’s namely for making news announcements for new games including features and release dates.
The next Nintendo Direct is a big one and comes in the form of a Nintendo Switch live presentation scheduled for 13 January and it will start at 4am UK time. That’s pretty early in the morning but the video should turn into a replay if you don’t fancy getting up.
This presentation will be live streamed (not pre-recorded) from Tokyo and will be broadcast in Japanese with English voice-over. Nintendo says to tune in ‚to hear about new Nintendo Switch details you won’t want to miss!‘.
