U. S. bombers hit Islamic State militants in Libya: U. S. defense officials

0

NewsHubTwo U. S. defense officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the strikes were carried out late on Wednesday 28 miles (45 km) southwest of Sirte against two camps.
They were done in cooperation with Libya’s U. N.-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) and no women or children were in the camps, the officials said.
One of the officials said initial reports showed dozens of militants were killed in the strikes with more than 100 precision guided munitions dropped.
Libyan forces backed by U. S. air strikes finished clearing the last Islamic State holdout in Sirte in early December after a battle of nearly seven months.
The loss of Sirte was a major blow for Islamic State, leaving the group without any territory in Libya, but it retains an active presence in parts of the vast country.
Libyan officials say hundreds of militants may have escaped before the battle in Sirte or during its early stages, and local Islamic State leaders have spoken of trying to regroup outside the city.
Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook, in a statement on Thursday, confirmed the U. S. military conducted strikes.
„The ISIL terrorists targeted included individuals who fled to the remote desert camps from Sirte in order to reorganize, and they posed a security threat to Libya, the region, and U. S. national interests,“ Cook said, using an acronym for Islamic State.
A statement from the GNA in Tripoli said the strikes were carried out against „several Islamic State gatherings in desert areas near Sirte, which were completely destroyed“.
„These air strikes are preemptive steps to foil attempts by the Islamic State terrorist organization to attack Sirte and others areas again,“ it said.
The strikes appear intended to shore up the GNA and protect recent gains in oil production from possible militant attacks, said Geoff Porter, head of North Africa Risk Consulting.
The GNA has received strong backing from the outgoing U. S. administration but has struggled to win support inside Libya or reverse the chaos that developed after rebels overthrew Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 with help from NATO.
The United States carried out about 470 air strikes against Islamic State targets in Sirte between August and December. It had previously carried out several isolated strikes against militant targets elsewhere in Libya.
The jihadist group took over Sirte in early 2015, turning it into its most important base outside the Middle East and attracting large numbers of foreign fighters into the city. It imposed its ultra-hardline rule on residents and extended its control along about 250 km (155 miles) of Libya’s Mediterranean coastline.

Collapse of burning Tehran high-rise kills 30 firefighters ‹ Japan Today: Japan News and Discussion

0

NewsHubTEHRAN, Iran —
A high-rise building in Tehran engulfed by a fire collapsed on Thursday, killing at least 30 firefighters and injuring some 75 people, state media reported.
The disaster struck the Plasco building, an iconic structure in central Tehran just north of the capital’s sprawling bazaar. Firefighters, soldiers and other emergency responders dug through the rubble, looking for survivors.
Iranian authorities did not immediately release definitive casualty figures, which is common in unfolding disasters.
Iran’s state-run Press TV announced the firefighters’ deaths, without giving a source for the information. Local Iranian state television said 30 civilians were injured in the disaster, while the state-run IRNA news agency said 45 firefighters had been injured.
Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours before the collapse. The fire appeared to be the most intense in the building’s upper floors before the collapse. Those floors were home to garment workshops where tailors cook for themselves and use old kerosene heaters for warmth in winter.
Police tried to keep out shopkeepers and others wanting to rush back in to collect their valuables.
Tehran’s mayor, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said there were “no ordinary civilians” trapped under the rubble. However, witnesses said some people had slipped through the police cordon and gone back into the building.
IRNA reported that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani ordered Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli to investigate and report the cause of the incident as soon as possible.
He also ordered the ministry to take care for the injured and take immediate action to compensate for those affected by the disaster.
The building came down in a matter of seconds, shown live on state television, which had begun an interview with a journalist at the scene. A side of the building came down first, tumbling perilously close to a firefighter perched on a ladder and spraying water on the blaze.
A thick plume of brown smoke rose over the site after the collapse. Onlookers wailed in grief.
Among those watching the disaster unfold was Masoumeh Kazemi who said she rushed to the building as her two sons and a brother had jobs in the garment workshops occupying the upper floors of the high-rise.
“I do not know where they are now,” Kazemi said, crying.
In a nearby intersection, Abbas Nikkhoo stood with tears in his eyes.
“My nephew was working in a workshop there,” he said. “He has been living with me since moving to Tehran last year from the north of the country in hopes of finding a job.”
Jalal Maleki, a fire department spokesman, earlier told Iranian state television that 10 firehouses responded to the blaze, which was first reported around 8 a.m.
The Iranian military sent units to help with the disaster, state television reported.
Several embassies are located near the building. Turkey’s state-run news agency, reporting from Tehran, said the Turkish Embassy was evacuated as a precaution, though it sustained no damage in the collapse.
The Plasco building was an iconic presence on the Tehran skyline.
The 17-story tower was built in the early 1960s by Iranian Jewish businessman Habib Elghanian and named after his plastics manufacturing company. It was the tallest building in the city at the time of its construction.
Elghanian was tried on charges that included espionage and executed in the months after the 1979 Islamic Revolution that brought the current ruling system to power — a move that prompted many members of the country’s longstanding Jewish community to flee.
The tower is attached to a multistory shopping mall featuring a sky-lit atrium and a series of turquoise-colored fountains. It wasn’t immediately clear if the mall was damaged.

How to earn $5,000 a year more in retirement

0

NewsHubSince there’s a good chance you’ll need every penny you can get as a senior, you should know that there’s a relatively simple way to pocket an extra $5,000 each year: Hold off on Social Security benefits.
Increasing your Social Security payments
Though you’re allowed to claim Social Security as early as age 62, your benefits will take a hit if you start collecting them before reaching your full retirement age. Your full retirement age is based on the year you were born, as shown in this table:
1943-1954
66
1955
66 and 2 months
1956
66 and 4 months
1957
66 and 6 months
1958
66 and 8 months
1959
66 and 10 months
1960
67
Meanwhile, the actual dollar amount you’re eligible for each month is based on your work history, and as long as you wait until your full retirement age to first claim Social Security, you’ll get that amount in full.
But just as you’ll face a reduction in benefits by taking them early, you’ll get a boost in benefits by taking them late. In fact, for each year you hold off on Social Security, you’ll increase your benefits by 8%. And while this incentive runs out at age 70, if your full retirement age is 66, you’ll get an opportunity to raise your payments by 32%.
In 2017, the average monthly Social Security benefit is estimated at $1,360. If you’re like the average recipient, and you delay your benefits four years, you’ll increase your monthly payment to $1,795. That’s a $435 boost per month, leaving you with an extra $5,220 dollars per year — forever.
Alternatives to Social Security
Let me guess — you’re probably sitting there wondering how on earth you can afford to hold off on Social Security for so long. The truth is, not everyone can. If you don’t have much in the way of savings and you’re unable or unwilling to work, then you probably won’t manage to hold out for four solid years.
On the other hand, if you’re willing to make an effort or get creative, you can find ways to manage without those benefits for a few more years, even if you don’t have a lot of savings to tap.
For one thing, if you stay at your job until you reach age 70, you won’t need to claim Social Security, because you’ll get to collect your regular income. If the idea of working that long sounds unappealing, you should know that according to some studies, working longer could actually lead to a longer life. Not only will working longer allow you to hold off on Social Security, but it will give you a few extra years to sock away some independent cash.
If you loathe your job or don’t have the option to stay, you can also look into starting your own business in retirement. According to the Small Business Administration, over 5 million older Americans run their own businesses, and between 2000 and 2007, the number of self-employed workers aged 55 to 64 climbed 52%.
Whether you decide to consult in your former field or pursue a hobby you’re passionate about, you can make up for that missing Social Security income by earning the money yourself.
Finally, if you can’t or don’t want to work, but you still wish to hold off on Social Security to boost your benefits, you might consider selling your home and using the proceeds to pay your living costs in the near term. You should consider this move especially if you don’t need as much space, your mortgage isn’t paid off, and you can’t afford the upkeep.

MIGnews.com.ua

10 Evernote tips to organize your info in 2017

0

NewsHubIt’s not too late to set new business goals for 2017. In fact, with the hectic holidays behind us, now is a great time to focus on what you hope to achieve this year.
One of my goals is to learn new ways to use Evernote for productivity. It’s already my go-to app for clipping web articles and organizing them into notebooks. But the cross-platform, freemium service is capable of much more. So I asked Evernote power users for tips on how to get better organized in 2017, using Evernote. Here’s a set of clever, and sometimes unexpected, ways to use Evernote tags, notebooks, table of contents and other tools to streamline your workflows.
You can write your goals in Evernote and share them with others, according to Joshua Zerkel, Evernote’s director of global community. „When you share goals with the people who can help support you, you’re letting them know you’ve decided to make important changes and they can help encourage you. “
„It’s important to set goals to see how you’re doing throughout the quarter and year,“ Zerkel says. After you write goals down as Evernote notes, you should collectively share them in a notebook with others. „This helps keep team members accountable and offers more collaboration to assist others in meeting their goals (like other members on my community team). “
Here’s a quick primer on how to share notes.
When interviewing job candidates, take notes that include key points the applicant makes, as well as follow-up action items, says Nicholas Kinports, executive vice president of strategy for NOTICE , a social content agency. „This helps me track what we’re expecting to receive from the candidate and if the response matches the discussion,“ he says.
You can also add the candidates‘ PDF resumes to notes, which are keyword-searchable (a $70-a-year Evernote Premium account is required to search PDFs), as well as offer letters. And you can share the notes with colleagues, too, for additional input. Keeping candidate notes helps you make better hiring decisions and can come in handy in the future, if you meet a former candidate again, Kinports says.
Here’s how to save PDFs to Evernote .
Evernote templates are a big time-saver and can help you be consistent in your interactions with clients, according to Melissa Ward, managing partner of website-design and digital-marketing firm NewWard Development. They can also help you remember what you need to do during those interactions.
Ward created an Evernote notebook called „Templates,“ which includes forms for client intake, marketing personas, blog posts and a marketing calendar. „When I want to create a new client intake note, I go to the needed template, do a ’select all,‘ create a new note in my client notebook, and paste the template in there. “ The template prompts her on what to ask new clients, and she shares the notes with clients so they can add information, as well.
„Networking is a huge part of growing a business, and sometimes it’s hard to keep track of prospective clients‘ contact details,“ says Mike Everett, chief recon officer of Layer 8 Recon , a social-media and private-investigation firm.
Everett quickly scans business cards using the iOS Evernote app, a feature he believes „not many users know about. “ (Business card scanning also works with Evernote on Android.) When a scan is complete, you can add a person to your phone’s contact database, or contact them directly from Evernote via SMS, email or phone. If you’re logged into LinkedIn, Evernote automatically searches for and pulls information from the contact’s LinkedIn profile.
Here’s how to scan business cards into Evernote using a smartphone.
Here’s an Evernote tip from me: Use the free Scannable app (iOS only) to quickly turn paper documents into PDFs, which you can then save in Evernote, send in email, or import into Dropbox, iCloud, OneNote, Google Drive or another installed app.
The scan process is lightning-fast. You just aim your iPhone camera at a document and Scannable automatically captures and crops (if needed) the page. If it’s a multi-page document, you can move the first page out of camera range after capturing it and replace it with additional pages. The scans are clean and legible. You can also capture whiteboards, receipts and business cards.
However, Scannable lacks optical character recognition (OCR), so it’s important to use descriptive keywords when you name documents.
„I use Evernote every day to stay on top of tasks,“ says Valerie Streif, a senior advisor with Mentat , a service for jobseekers. „I break down my different areas of tasks, such as content creation, responding to reporter queries, and answering customer questions, into individual notebooks. “ From there, Streif uses Evernote’s checklist and reminders features to create to-do lists with alerts for task categories.
„Reminder alerts are especially key for me, because when working remotely, it can be easy to forget important deadlines,“ Streif says. She also recommends sharing to-do lists with others on your team, which can be „incredibly beneficial if a lot of employees work remotely, or if it’s difficult to organize a meeting across departments. “
“ I take copious meeting notes in Evernote,“ says Sean Linehan, director of product at freight-logistics company Flexport. „But my team doesn’t manage projects in Evernote. This creates a disconnect between where I’m recording information and where my team is accessing information. “
One solution? You could connect Evernote to your team’s project management system using Zapier , a freemium app and workflow automation platform. Using Zapier, you can connect Evernote to Trello, Asana, Slack and JIRA, which Flexport uses. After setting up Zapier’s JIRA-Evernote integration , you should create an Evernote notebook called „JIRA. “ „When you create a note that’s actionable for your team, move it into the JIRA notebook, and Zapier will automatically create it as a task in JIRA,“ Linehan says.
Onboarding new employees, especially remote ones, can be a challenge, according to Ian Howells, founder of LawFirm.hosting , which offers WordPress hosting for law firms. But you can organize shared training notes for team members using Evernote’s Table of Contents (TOC) feature.
A TOC is a note with links to other notes, and it makes it easy for new employees or contractors to get the information they need quickly, Howells says. You can add a TOC to any notebook. To create a TOC, select the notes you want to include, then click the „Create Table of Contents Note“ button in the resulting menu.
TOCs are also helpful for organizing travel arrangements and other information.
Evernote can help you track the progress of projects, business deals, job candidates and more, just by creating notebooks and dragging and dropping between them, according to Frank Gerber , an Evernote consultant.
For example, if you’re tracking the progress of a potential deal, you can create a note about the deal and put it in Evernote’s Inbox. When you’re ready for input from others, you just drag the note to a „Needs Discussion“ notebook and then share it with colleagues for feedback. Alternatively, you might drag the note to a „Reject — Not a Good Fit“ or „Reject — Consider Later“ notebook, if the deal doesn’t look promising. The idea is to create notebooks for each stage of a process, and then drag and drop notes between them to indicate status.
„A typical mistake business users make is to set up a single shared notebook for the whole company and fit dozens or even hundreds of notes in it,“ says Olga Tsubiks , a self-employed marketing, data analytics and visualization expert. „A better approach is to set up one notebook per project and use tags to manage workflows. “
For example, all to-dos could go in a „Task Management“ notebook. In this notebook, you might add one of two tags to a note: „to do“ or „done. “ For bigger tasks, create a „Project Management Notebook“ and tag notes with „to do,“ „in progress“ or „done. “ You can then sort tasks by their status using the tags you add, Tsubiks says.

WATCH LIVE: Trump Treasury Nominee Defends Profiting Off Foreclosure Crisis

0

NewsHubYuki Noguchi
In a tense hearing Thursday morning, the new administration’s Treasury Secretary nominee Steven Mnuchin faced scrutiny from Democratic senators concerned about him profiting handsomely off homeowners who lost their homes during the housing crisis.
Mnuchin, whose career includes a 17-year stint at Goldman Sachs and Hollywood movie production, won early praise from Republicans. But stiff questioning followed from Democrats for his role as CEO of a company that took over IndyMac Bank, now known as OneWest, which failed because of its bad home loans and later pushed through many controversial foreclosures, ultimately yielding massive profits for Mnuchin.

Treasury Secretary-designate Steven Mnuchin testifies at a confirmation on Capitol Hill. He faced tough questioning from Democrats over his running of a bank that profited off the housing crisis.
Oregon Democrat Ron Wyden, the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Finance, called his practices „predatory. “
„While Mr. Mnuchin was CEO, the bank proved it could put more people on the street faster than just about anybody else around,“ Wyden said in his opening statement. Wyden added, „Treasury Secretary ought to be somebody who works on behalf of all Americans, including those who still wait for the economic recovery to show up in their communities. When I look at Mr. Mnuchin’s background, it’s a real stretch to find hard evidence that he would be that kind of Treasury secretary. “
Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, a Republican from Utah, rushed to the Mnuchin’s defense early, accusing the Democrats of obstructionism.
„Objectively speaking, I don’t think anyone can argue that Mr. Mnuchin is unqualified for this position, so I hope we don’t have those type of stupid arguments,“ Hatch said.
There is no evidence that any laws were broken in Mnuchin’s management of OneWest bank, he added.
Mnuchin was ready with his response: „Let me be clear: My group had nothing to do with the creation of risky loans in the IndyMac loan portfolios,“ he said, and the group invested $1.6 billion in the bank. „We renamed the business OneWest bank and saved thousands of jobs. “
Mnuchin, 54, a divorced father of three children, followed his father’s footsteps to Goldman Sachs, where he worked for 17 years.
Campaign-finance records show Mnuchin contributed to the political campaigns of many Democrats, though he was an early supporter of Trump’s, having met him about 15 years ago, after Mnuchin left Goldman Sachs and started a hedge fund that later invested in at least two Trump real estate projects. More recently, he has been a money man in Hollywood, with a production company that produced „The Lego Movie,“ „American Sniper“ and „Suicide Squad. “
Mnuchin’s appointment was controversial in part because it departed from Trump’s rhetoric on the campaign.
As a presidential candidate, Trump vilified Wall Street bankers, arguing they were part of an establishment more allied with Hillary Clinton. One television ad featured video of Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein appearing as Trump says in a voice over, „it’s a global power structure that is responsible for the economic decisions that have robbed our working class, stripped our country of its wealth and put that money into the pockets of a handful of large corporations and political entities. “
But the toughest questioning from Senate Democrats will focus on how OneWest handled its portfolio of troubled mortgages, after he led a group of investors who took over the bank from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The Democrats cited cases where the bank aggressively foreclosed on 35,000 homeowners and did not modifying loans to enable more of them to remain in their homes.
