„Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood“ and other PBS Kids favorites are getting their own network, a 24/7 free channel broadcast over the air and live-streamed online.
For one of its biggest channel launches in years, PBS realized that a crucial technology to complete its mission was one that’s existed since the dawn of TV: over-the-air signals.
On Monday, the public television programmer will fire up PBS Kids, a free channel of 24/7 educational children’s programming. It will have familiar shows like “ Sesame Street “ and “ Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood “ as well as new programming events like a Friday family night with movie premieres.
As befits the era of Netflix and Facebook Live, PBS will deliver the channel via online live stream, with plans for cutting-edge interactive teaching games and a library of videos on demand. But it will also fire up PBS Kids as a new over-the-air channel that almost anyone in the US should be able to access with just a TV and antenna.
„Our goal is to reach all children,“ said Lesli Rotenberg, PBS‘ general manager of children’s media. „We have a special emphasis on reaching those kids who need that help most: at risk, low-income, however you want to frame it. “
Over-the-air broadcasting — the oldest TV technology there is — is enjoying a resurgence, a low-tech side effect of the popularity of digital video options. As Netflix and other online alternatives spur more people to shun pay-TV like cable and satellite, more of these cord-cutters are tuning into live TV with an antenna, just as everyone did in the time of „I Love Lucy“ and Ed Sullivan.
About 17 percent of US television households get their TV solely from over-the-air broadcasts, according to a study by research firm GfK in July, up from 15 percent a year earlier. And „broadcast-only“ households are more likely to be earning less than $30,000 per year, at 26 percent.
Many of those kids, PBS found, rely on over-the-air TV. They’re also PBS Kids‘ most loyal fans.
In its research, the programmer also found that kids 2 to 8 years old in over-the-air-only homes watch about three times as much PBS as an average kid does. „They make up the biggest percentage of our audience,“ she said.
Still, PBS wants to push the tech envelope too, she said.
Later this year, the live stream will introduce integrated games, letting children toggle between a PBS Kids live show and an activity that dives deeper into the subject from a particular segment. Research showed that kids learn more if they interact with both video and games.
The channel will also be available as a live stream on pbskids.org and on the free PBS Kids Video App for mobile devices and tablets. The live stream is expected to come to TV-streaming devices like Roku, Apple TV and Chromecast within the first year.
PBS Kids will continue to offer paid online subscriptions, like its Amazon add-on membership for $5 a month. That paid option will have a wider library of on-demand videos, but the free service will also have clips on demand plus the always-on live feed.
Of PBS‘ roughly 350 member stations, 107 are expected to launch the PBS Kids channel on TV, making it available to 90 percent of US, the company said. Seventy-three of them will debut the channel Monday. Viewers can check local station schedules for details.
It will also make live PBS Kids programming available free nationwide during prime-time evening hours and on weekends for the first time. Though many PBS member stations include a block of kids‘ programming sometime during the day, kids watch twice as much TV in the evening, PBS found.

What’s in the box? There was almost no box.
If you’ve seen „Se7en,“ you know how chilling the final scene is. The unimaginable ending made Brad Pitt’s „What’s in the box? “ line infamous, thanks to a creepy special delivery his detective character receives.
Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker told The Hollywood Reporter the ending made it into the film by accident. Original director Jeremiah S. Chechik („National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation“) told Walker to rewrite the script with the Gwyneth-Paltrow’s-head-in-the-box scene taken out.
But when David Fincher was brought on to direct, Walker said New Line accidentally sent Fincher the head scene, and he refused to make the film without it.
„And then they sent him the vastly rewritten, Jeremiah Chechik draft, which had a completely different ending and Fincher said, ‚No, I wouldn’t be interested in doing that,'“ Walker said.
Walker says he’s glad „Se7en“ was early in his career, when he was working at Tower Records and had little clout. If he’d had more experience, he might have chosen to leave the film because of the proposed change.
The movie „was optioned at the guild minimum,“ Walker told THR in an interview published Friday. „Which was a fine living compared to Tower Records. It wasn’t ‚F– you money,‘ obviously. But it was enough money for me to make the move from the east to the west and to get a Toyota. Not a Rolls. “
That’s one way to get ahead.

The actual process here isn’t terribly different from a regular Raspberry Pi, which just requires you to hook up the Raspberry Pi Camera Module and then install a bunch of software. The real clever part of this one comes from the ZeroView camera mount , which crams the Pi Zero and camera module into a tiny little case that you can suction cup to a window. West’s camera is set up to send you an email when the camera detects motion, but he does note it might require some experimentation with positioning to limit false positives. Im Kölner „Tatort“ will eine Bürgerwehr das Viertel vor nordafrikanischen Männern schützen. Aber sie provoziert unnötig Gewalt. Die Nachlese.
Wenn Vorverurteilung und Misstrauen regieren, führt das zu Selbstjustiz und provoziert Gewalt in einer Endlosspirale. In „Wacht am Rhein“ werden Bürger jeglicher Herkunft zu vielen kleinen, skrupellosen Hilfssheriffs, die Selbstjustiz über Staatsgewalt stellen. „Gewalt animiert zu Gewalt“, sagte Meryl Streep jüngst bei den Golden Globes. Das passt auch auf diesen Kölner Tatort.
In einem Kölner Stadtteil patroulliert die Bürgerwehr „Wacht am Rhein“, die nach der Silvesternacht 2015 vor allem jugendliche Nordafrikaner im Visier hat. Eines Nachts, Zoohandlungsbesitzer Deisböck ist noch in seinem Geschäft, überfällt ein Vermummter den Laden. Lars Deisböck, Sohn des Ladenbesitzers, und Ober-Sheriff Dieter Gottschalk kommen zu Hilfe. Bei einem Schusswechsel im Dunkeln stirbt Lars Deisböck. Sein Tod facht die fremdenfeindliche Stimmung im Viertel an.
Auch Polizisten wie Tobias Reisser, Assistent der beiden Kommissare Ballauf und Schenk und selbst dunkelhäutig, sind vor Vorurteilen nicht gefeit. Als der Zeuge Adil Faras, ein marokkanischer Ladenbesitzer, das Polizeipräsidium verlässt, hat Reisser noch eine Frage.
Reisser: Was macht einer wie Sie eigentlich bei der Bürgerwehr?
Faras: Lustig, dass Sie das fragen. Was macht einer wie Sie eigentlich bei der Kölner Polizei?
Jürgen Werner, der bereits das Dortmunder Tatort -Quartett erschaffen hat, ist für Drehbuch zu „Wacht am Rhein“ verantwortlich und führt vor allem in treffenden Dialogen vor, dass in der Flüchtlingsproblematik nicht immer nur Rechtsextreme die Bösen sind.
Flop I:
Ballauf und Schenk kommen nicht gut weg. Ungelenk torkeln die Kommissare durch den Fall, der arme Ballauf muss seine Impulsivität sogar mit handfesten Prügeln bezahlen. Man wünscht ihnen beim nächsten Mal ein bisschen mehr Souveränität.
Mit der Themenvielfalt klappt es beim Tatort gerade nicht. „Wacht am Rhein“ ist nach der Frankfurter vergangene Woche bereits die zweite Episode, die Angst vor Flüchtlingen thematisiert.
Doppelter Einsatz für die Polizei: Zum einen kündigt die Bürgerwehr einen Trauermarsch für den getöteten Lars Deisböck an, der zu eskalieren droht. Zum anderen nehmen die Beamten die WG des jungen Verdächtigen Khalid Hamidi auseinander. Beide Operationen werden geschickt geschnitten, sodass die Grenzen zwischen denen, die verdächtigen, und denen, die verdächtigt werden, ineinander fließen. Und die einen mindestens so bedrohlich wirken wie die anderen.
Sylvester Groth, ehemaliger Polizeiruf -Ermittler, kehrt in den ARD-Krimi zurück und spielt den Anführer der Bürgerwehr, Dieter Gottschalk. Indem er im Stillen scheinbar die Fäden zieht und nach außen die Anhänger seiner Bürgerwehr mit hohlen Parolen aufwiegelt, wirkt er verschlagen und gefährlich. Das ist unheimlich authentisch.
… wer der ominöse Straßenmusiker ist, über den Ballauf und Schenk sich wundern: Am Saxofon steht Klaus Doldinger, der vor mehr als 40 Jahren die Tatort -Titelmelodie komponiert hat. Wenn Sie genau hinhören, erkennen Sie sie auch.
Wie viele unnötig Schuldige die Angst vor den Fremden verursachen kann: Der Student hat seinen Entführer getötet, der Ladenbesitzer seinen eigenen Sohn. Abgeführt werden am Ende nicht nur sie, sondern auch Bürgerwehr-Chef Gottschalk und Nina Schmitz. Sie hat sich als Komplizin des toten Faras schuldig gemacht. Als die Beamten Schmitz hinausführen, will ihr Kind ihre Hand nicht loslassen. Die Selbstjustiz, mit der sie alle ihr Leben schützen wollten, hat genau dieses zerstört.

Lorch/Schwäbisch Gmünd – Schreckliches Bild für die Einsatzkräfte!
Eine Geisterfahrerin hat bei einem Unfall bei Lorch (Ostalbkreis) einen Menschen getötet und ist selbst gestorben.
Bei dem Zusammenstoß gab es zudem mehrere Verletzte, sagte ein Polizeisprecher.
Die Fahrerin sei falsch auf die Bundesstraße 29 eingebogen und dann frontal mit einem anderen Fahrzeug kollidiert. Ob es Absicht oder ein Fehler war, ist noch unklar.
Die Unfallstelle zeigte ein Bild der Verwüstung. Zwei Autos sind komplett zerstört.
Rettungskräfte sind für die aufwendige Bergung im Großeinsatz. Die Bundesstraße wurde in beide Richtungen komplett gesperrt.
