Five humanitarian workers from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been killed in a bomb attack in Kandahar, Afghanistan, officials have confirmed.
They died in blasts at the governor of Kandahar’s guesthouse on Tuesday, where several others were killed.
The governor and the UAE ambassador were among at least a dozen wounded. Kandahar’s deputy governor reportedly died of his injuries on Wednesday.
The attack was one of several in Afghanistan on Tuesday.
The Taliban admitted attacks in the capital Kabul and in Helmand province, but denied the Kandahar attack, instead blaming it on „internal local rivalry“.
Afghanistan’s Tolo News quoted survivors as saying that the bomb was hidden in a sofa at the guesthouse.
It said that Kandahar police chief Gen Abdul Raziq was among the guests, but was unharmed.
Senior police and intelligence officials were also present, officials say.
Three days of mourning have been declared in the UAE.
UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed has ordered that flags across the country should be flown at half-mast in honour of its „martyred“ citizens.
The UAE said the officials had been carrying out „humanitarian, educational and development projects“.
Among the projects was signing an agreement with Kardan University, in the capital Kabul, to offer scholarships funded by the UAE.
More than 62 people were killed and 100 wounded in a string of attacks on Tuesday.
In Kabul, a suicide bomber and a car bomb detonated near the Afghan parliament complex, while in Helmand province a Taliban suicide bomber targeted a guesthouse used by an intelligence official, killing at least seven people. The Taliban admitted both attacks.

President Barack Obama wiped away tears as he paid tribute to his teenage daughters and to Michelle Obama, his „best friend,“ at the emotional close of a farewell address in his adoptive city of Chicago Tuesday.
„Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, girl of the south side, for the past 25 years, you have not only been my wife and mother of my children, you have been my best friend,“ Obama told the first lady, seated before him dressed all in black.
„You took on a role you didn’t ask for and made it your own with grace and grit and style and good humor,“ he told her, at one point pulling out a handkerchief to dab away tears — as the crowd of 18,000 cheered wildly.
„A new generation sets its sights higher because it has you as a role model. You’ve made me proud. You’ve made the country proud. “
It was in Chicago that the Obamas met, that their daughters were born, and as the president put it in a Facebook post ahead of the speech, „for Michelle and me, Chicago is where it all started. “
While 18-year-old Malia was there to hear her father’s farewell speech, her 15-year-old sister Sasha was not — the most notable of a series of public absences by the teen that prompted a flurry of good natured chatter on social media, and a hashtag #SashaObama.
A White House official said Sasha stayed back in DC tonight because she has an exam at school in the morning.
But Obama addressed both girls in praising the „two amazing young women“ they had become, during the family’s eight years in the White House.
„Of all that I have done in my life, I am most proud to be your dad,“ he said — as Malia, dressed in black-and-white, shed a few tears with her mother’s arm around her.
„You are smart, and you are beautiful, but more importantly, you are kind, and you are thoughtful, and you are full of passion,“ Obama told them. „And you bore the burden of years in the spotlight so easily. “
And finally, the 55-year-old president turned to Joe Biden — who along with his wife Jill he described as a second „family,“ drawing yet another standing ovation for the vice-president.
„You were the first decision I made as a nominee, and it was the best,“ Obama told Biden. „Not just because you have been a great vice president, but because in the bargain, I gained a brother. “
After the president’s speech drew to a close, the Obamas and their daughter came together on stage for a warm embrace.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday dismissed news reports as a “complete fabrication and utter nonsense.” Peskov insisted that the Kremlin “does not engage in collecting compromising material.”
“It is an obvious attempt to harm our bilateral relations,” Peskov said, adding “In English, it is called pulp fiction. Surely, we should react to it with the same sense of humor.”

Multiple U. S. government and intelligence officials told CBS News on Tuesday that an addendum to the classified intelligence report on Russia’s efforts to interfere in the U. S. election contained unverified details of potentially compromising information that Russia has gathered on Mr. Trump.
The officials told CBS News the information originally came from a former British intelligence officer and was eventually turned over to U. S. intelligence, as well as other government officials, last year.
After the news reports emerged Tuesday regarding the Russian information, Mr. Trump appeared to dismiss the claims in a tweet as “fake news.”

U. S. intelligence is in the process of corroborating the details of what the Russians may have, but the officials told CBS News the former British investigator and his network are considered credible. Because this information is so sensitive, the addendum was not part of the classified report that was distributed to a wider group of people last week.
A source told CBS News the purported information on Mr. Trump was part of the most classified report, that only would have been presented to the president, the president-elect and the Gang of 8, made up of the top Democrat and Republican in the House and the Senate and the chair and ranking members of the House and Senate Intelligence committees.
It is unclear whether the information was actually discussed with Mr. Trump, or just part of the materials presented to him during his briefing last Friday.
