A surge of popularity for a freshly minted opposition party in Japan is making Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s decision to call a snap election look riskier than initially thought.
Abe dissolved the lower house of parliament Thursday, setting the stage for an Oct 22 vote.
The Party of Hope, launched earlier this week by Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike, may not dethrone Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party but analysts say it could put a dent in the LDP’s majority. A major setback could derail Abe’s presumed hope to extend his rule for three more years at a party leadership meeting next year.
Minutes after the lower house dissolution, Abe made a fiery speech to party members. He said he is seeking a public mandate on his tough diplomatic and defense policies to deal with escalating threats from North Korea, and that party members would have to relay his message to win voter support during the campaign.
“This election is about how we protect Japan, the people’s lives and peaceful daily life,” Abe said. “The election is about the future of our children.”
Abe’s decision to dissolve parliament is widely seen as an attempt to reconsolidate his hold on power within the LDP, after a series of scandals and missteps earlier this year. A big enough victory could help ensure his re-election as party leader in September 2018.
The move is not without risks, but analysts say the timing may be better now than later. The Democratic Party, the largest opposition group, is in disarray, and the sudden election gives the Party of Hope little time to organize candidates and a campaign strategy.
Media polls, though, show the new party off to a respectable start, though still trailing the LDP.
Jeff Kingston, a professor at Temple University’s Japan Campus in Tokyo, called Koike’s new party a game changer.
“I think it is really bad news for Abe,” he said. “She doesn’t actually have to win, but she has to inflict a bloody nose on Abe … If her party does better than expected, expect the long knives to come out in the LDP, and Abe could be ushered to the exit.”
Koike, at a news conference, denied speculation that she might run for parliament herself. “I will stay in the city and put my energy to lead Tokyo’s preparations ahead of the upcoming Olympics and Paralympics,” she said.
Still, a relatively good showing by her party could allow it to influence Abe on policies such as constitutional change, an issue both politicians have an interest in, said Stephen Nagy, a professor at International Christian University in Tokyo.
Working in Abe’s favor, he said, are the LDP’s nationwide electoral organization and his handling of North Korea, which has sent two missiles over Japan in recent tests. “Another missile test would likely put him in the limelight further, casting a shadow on the Party of Hope’s policy credentials,” Nagy said.
The Democratic Party, whose predecessor party held power in 2009-2012, is splintering, and many members have defected to Koike’s party. Party leader Seiji Maehara said the Democrats would do whatever it takes to bring down the Abe government.
Lower house members all stood up and chanted “banzai” three times in a dissolution ritual, then rushed out of the assembly hall. The other chamber, the less-powerful upper house, will not be up for election but remain closed until parliament is reconvened after the vote.

Illinois governor signs bill funding abortions with taxpayer dollars

0

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill Thursday overturning state laws that prohibited taxpayer dollars from financing abortions. Pro-life activists were quick to fire back that the Republican had caved in to the “abortion lobby” by opening it up to a fresh stream of revenue.
Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill Thursday overturning state laws that prohibited taxpayer dollars from financing abortions.
At a press conference announcing his decision, the Republican governor said “no woman should be forced to make a different decision than another woman would make purely based on her income.”
“I personally am pro-choice,” he said. “I always have been. And I’ve made no qualms about that when I was elected governor. And I have not and never will change my views.”
Mr. Rauner’s views have changed since April, when he said he would not sign House Bill 40 if passed by the state legislature. He said he ultimately decided to sign the bill after he was unable to find “common ground” during debate over the legislation.
Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life, said the governor violated “his promise to protect Illinois taxpayers from forced funding of abortion.”
“Unfortunately, Governor Rauner gave into the pressure of the abortion industry, which has moved from choice to coercion, forcing people to not only support their extreme abortion agenda, but also to pay for it,” Ms. Hawkins said in a statement.
HB 40 lifts a ban on the use of taxpayer dollars for abortions in the state’s health care and Medicaid programs. Government workers and low-income women who get their health insurance from the state will now receive coverage for abortions.
The legislation also removes triggering language from Illinois law that would have made abortion illegal in the state if the Supreme Court ever overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision declaring a federal constitutional right to an abortion.
Brittany Mostiller, executive director of the Chicago Abortion Fund, said Illinois took an “incredibly important step towards justice for women like me.”
“By signing HB 40, which passed with strong majorities in our Illinois House and Senate, Gov. Rauner affirms the right to legal abortion in our state, guarding against the awful prospect of a Supreme Court ruling that overturns Roe v. Wade and eliminates the legal right to abortion nationwide,” Ms. Mostiller said Thursday at the press conference.
She said “protecting the legal right to abortion isn’t enough, because a right in theory only is no right at all.”
“That’s why it’s so important to lift the ban on insurance coverage for abortion for low-income people in our state, and HB 40 does exactly that,” she said.
Ms. Hawkins said HB 40 “flies directly in the face of vast majorities of Americans who don’t support taxpayer funding for abortion,” regardless of if they identify as pro-choice or pro-life.
“This abhorrent bill has nothing to do with protecting women’s health and is about nothing more than providing a new income stream for the abortion lobby,” she said.

Do Women Like Hugh Hefner?

0

Listening to women discuss Hugh Hefner is a fascinating experience.
Listening to women discuss Hugh Hefner is a fascinating experience.
A debate broke out in our newsroom today, and it all began when I simply asked the women if they were offended by the nature of content Hefner produced during his life. It didn’t take long for the discussion to blow up.
The general consensus was the Playboy founder’s work itself wasn’t overly offensive. In fact — of the women I talked to — less than 20 percent were actually offended by naked women in a men’s magazine.
However, the women were in complete unity when labeling him as a totally contemptible as a person.
One of the people in debate pointed to a book by a former girlfriend, which alleges that he was fast and loose with drugs around women. It’s totally understandable to not like somebody based off of those allegations.
His critics also pointed to the fact he had relations with much younger women as a reason for why they didn’t like him outside of the Playboy publication. Again, a reasonable thing to believe from the standpoint of a woman. I can’t imagine how awkward of a situation that must be for a woman in her early-20s to be sleeping with a man four times their age.
The views of women run in pretty stark contrast to that of the men I’ve spoken to with today. The majority of men in the debate like pretty much everything about Hefner, or at the very least, they find him to be an interesting person.
This question will be a lot more entertaining to debate in about ten years when the legacy he left behind ages.

Szyszko odpowiada TSUE ws. Puszczy Białowieskiej

0

Everything To Know Before The Season 4 Premiere – Hollywood Life

0

TGIT is back and season 4 of ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ is here! But first, here’s everything you should know before tonight’s premiere!
Now, before we catch you up, there ARE SPOILERS AHEAD; you’ve been warned. Can you believe it’s been seven months since the season three finale of How To Get Away With Murder aired? And, that’s exactly why you need this refresher course. The third season ended with a murder and an unexpected twist — Wes is dead [or so we think], AND Laurel ‘s father ordered the hit on him; but, we don’t know why. On top of all of that, SO much more happened. So, before tonight’s season four premiere — Thursday, Sept. 28, on ABC at 10 PM ET — we’re breaking down everything you should know.
Let’s start with the star herself, Annalise Keating. As you may know, Annalise had a pretty rough third season; she fell off the wagon, got the crap beat out of her in prison, and just escaped a hefty sentence thanks to the Keating 5 and Bonnie. The crew got her out of being convicted for Wes’ murder. There was one crazy mystery in the third season involving Annalise and Wes. She repeatedly referred to him as “my son.” But, is her really her son? That’s what we’re waiting for clarification on that.
Wes — Oh, poor Wes. His death hit us hard. But, is he really dead? It’s such a Shonda Rhimes thing for her to do to make him somehow, some way reincarnate. As far as we all know, Wes is dead. Shockingly enough, Laurel’s dad, Jorge — the boss a–, shady businessman — ordered a hit out on Wes; but, we don’t know why. Jorge orderd for their family friend, Dominic, to carry out the hit.
Laurel — Speaking of her, she had a pretty rough season three as well. We saw her go through a ton of pain after Annalise’s house blew up. Oh, and she’s pregnant… with Wes’s baby. And, she’s still tussling with the idea of keeping the baby or not. In the season three finale, Laurel decides to take a gun and go after Charles Mahoney herself because she thinks he is the one behind Wes’s death. However, as mentioned above, that isn’t true; her father, Jorge, order Dominic to take care of the hit, remember?
Connor — Moving on to Connor, who sports a nearly shaved head in season four, he closed out season three with his continued struggle about his involvement with the Keating 5. His guilt has really eaten him up inside. Needless to say, he cracked. Connor ended up going to the police to reveal that he knew Olivier had a copy of Annalise’s phone [remember, before she was taken to jail, she asked Oliver to wipe her phone; although he did what she asked, he made a copy of her phone to keep for himself]. Also, on the phone was a voicemail of Wes confessing to Sam’s murder. Yeah, we almost forgot too. Anyway, there was a little light at the end of the tunnel for Connor since he and Oli reconciled-ish… Oli asked Connor to marry him. And, we shall see what happens.
Michaela — You’ve got to love Michaela and Laurel’s friendship; it’s such a love/hate relationship. And, we have to say, while Laurel was in the hospital, Michaela was super supportive. And, when Laurel decided to go after Charle Mahoney, Michaela helped reel him in during a plot to kill him, well, so Laurel could kill him. And, yes, Michaela’s still dating Asher. In fact, she loves him. It took a while, but it happened.
Asher — And, there’s not much here besides, he confessed his love to Michaela, and like we said, she felt the same; after what seemed like years.
Bon — As asher would call her; aka, Bonnie. We were thrown for a real curve when she slept with Frank in season three! Bonnie was like the other chick in season three, her relationships were just crumbling; Frank disappeared, Asher loved Michaela. During the finale she worked her a– off to make sure Annalise avoided jail time. And, although she wasn’t happy with Frank [especially after he slipped out before she woke up after their night of steamy sex], she still tried to lure him back in so they could help Annalise; per usual.
Frank — Frank was MIA for most of season three. He was hiding out, doing shady things; aka Frank things; until he slept with Bonnie and secretly checked on Laurel in the hospital. The police tried to get him to take a deal where he would confess that Annalise ordered him to kill Wes; if not, he would face murder charges. Bonnie ended up telling him NOT to take the deal… and he didn’t. And, yes, Frank will return with that sexy buzzed head… don’t act like you don’t like it.
Now that you’re all caught up, don’t miss tonight’s season four premiere of How To Get Away With Murder on ABC at 10 PM ET!

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended a ceremony Thursday marking the anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and China as well as China’s national day, in a display of his intent to improve delicate relations between the Asian neighbors.
Abe attended the event at a Tokyo hotel, becoming a first Japanese leader to take part in the annual ceremony in more than a decade. He said he hoped Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Japan at the earliest possible date.
Abe said stronger ties between Japan and China benefit the two countries and also are indispensable for peace and stability in Northeast Asia “given the current situation” in the region, referring to the escalating nuclear and missile threat from North Korea, according to NHK.
Abe’s attendance on a busy day on which he dissolved the Lower Housefor snap elections was seen as a gesture of his willingness to improve ties.
The two Asian countries mark their 45th anniversary of ties on Friday, and China’s national day is Sunday.
Beijing welcomed the attendance of Abe, who was accompanied by Foreign Minister Taro Kono. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties is “of great significance” in bilateral relations. He expressed hope that Japan sees it as an opportunity to draw lessons from history and look to the future and improve ties “in a correct direction.”
Abe told Chinese and Japanese guests that he hopes to visit China and intends to host a Japan-China-South Korea summit by the end of this year as part of deepening relations with Beijing.
Tokyo and Beijing have had rocky relations over Japan’s wartime aggression and disputes over uninhabited islets and undersea resources in the East China Sea.

His statement comes after White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said President Donald Trump was not thrilled with Price’s flights. Trump had publicly declared his displeasure a day earlier.
