Kushner used private email with White House officials, his lawyer says

White House adviser Jared Kushner set up a private email account last December that he used to correspond with other officials in the Trump administration.
That’s according to Politico, which reported Sunday that President Trump’s son-in-law used the private account to swap messsages with White House figures like former strategist Steve Bannon and former chief of staff Reince Priebus as well as current economics adviser Gary Cohn and spokesman Josh Raffel.
Topics of the emails included event details and media coverage, according to the report.
A lawyer of Kushner, Abbe Lowell, confirmed Kushner’s use of a personal account to communicate with White House staffers.
“Fewer than 100 emails from January through August were either sent to or returned by Mr. Kushner to colleagues in the White House from his personal email account,” Lowell said in a statement.
“These usually forwarded news articles or political commentary and most often occurred when someone initiated the exchange by sending an email to his personal rather than his White House address.”
During his presidential campaign, Trump consistently criticized Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server, which she did use to send classified material .

Trump replaces travel ban with new restrictions on 8 nations

0

The news comes the same day as Trump’s temporary ban on visitors from six Muslim-majority countries is set to expire 90 days after it went in effect.
WASHINGTON — Citizens of eight countries, including North Korea and Venezuela, will face new restrictions on entry to the U. S. under a proclamation signed by President Donald Trump on Sunday that will replace his expiring travel ban.
The new rules, which will impact the citizens of Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen, will go into effect on Oct. 18.
The restrictions range from an indefinite ban on visas for citizens of countries like Syria to more targeted restrictions. A suspension of non-immigrant visas to citizens for Venezuela, for instance, will apply only to certain government officials and their immediate families.
The announcement comes the same day as Trump’s temporary ban on visitors from six Muslim-majority countries was set to expire 90 days after it went into effect. That ban had barred citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen who lack a “credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States” from entering the U. S. Only one of those countries, Sudan, will no longer be subject to travel restrictions.
“Making America Safe is my number one priority. We will not admit those into our country we cannot safely vet,” Trump tweeted late Sunday after the new policy was announced.
Unlike the first iteration of Trump’s travel ban, which sparked chaos at airports across the country and a flurry of legal challenges, officials stressed they had been working for months on the new rules, in collaboration with various agencies and in conversation with foreign governments.
To limit confusion, valid visas would not be revoked as a result of the proclamation. The order also permits, but does not guarantee, case-by-case waivers for citizens of the affected countries who meet certain criteria.
That includes: Having previously worked or studied in the U. S. for a lengthy and continuous period of time activity; having previously established “significant contacts” in the U. S.; and having “significant business or professional obligations” in the U. S. Still, officials acknowledged the waiver restrictions were narrower than the exemptions for people with bona fide ties to the United States that he Supreme Court mandated.
The restrictions are targeted at countries that the Department of Homeland Security says fail to share sufficient information with the U. S. or haven’t taken necessary security precautions.
Over the course of the last three months, DHS worked to developed new security baselines, which includes factors such as whether countries issue electronic passports with biometric information, report lost or stolen passports to INTERPOL, and share information about travelers’ terror-related and criminal histories. The U. S. then shared those benchmarks with every country in the world and gave them 50 days to comply.
A total of 16 countries did not comply with the rules at first, officials said, but half worked with the U. S. to improve their information-sharing and security practices. The remaining eight are now subject to the new restrictions until they are deemed in compliance.
They include a suspension of all immigrants visas for nationals of Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Yemen and Somalia, and the suspension of non-immigrant visas, such as for business and tourism, to nationals of Chad, Libya, North Korea, Syria and Yemen.
Citizens of Iran will not be eligible for tourism and business visas, but remain eligible for student and cultural exchange visas if they undergo additional scrutiny. Such additional scrutiny will also be required for Somali citizens applying for all non-immigrant visas.
Trump last week called for a “tougher” travel ban after a bomb partially exploded on a London subway.
“The travel ban into the United States should be far larger, tougher and more specific-but stupidly, that would not be politically correct!” he tweeted.
Critics have accused Trump of overstepping his legal authority and violating the U. S. Constitution’s protections against religious bias each time he has ordered new travel restrictions.
And the inclusion of Venezuela and North Korea appeared to be an attempt to block challenges from advocacy groups and others who have called the restrictions a ban on Muslims. Trump during his campaign called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.”
The U. S. had already imposed wide-ranging sanctions on certain high-ranking Venezuelan government officials to protest the government’s attempts to consulate power. The new visa sanctions will apply to all officials from five Venezuelan government security agencies and their immediate families.
But officials argue the measures as necessary to keep Americans safe.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a statement the president was carrying out his duty to protect the American people. He said the State Department would coordinate with other federal agencies to implement the measures in “an orderly manner” and would” continue to work closely with our allies and partners who share our commitment to national and global security.”
The new policy could also complicate the Supreme Court’s review of the order, which is scheduled for argument next month.

Melee broke out around midday Sunday in the yard at the California Men's Colony near San Luis Obispo, officials say
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — An inmate was killed and several others were stabbed Sunday in a riot involving more than 160 inmates at a prison on California’s central coast, authorities said.
The melee broke out around midday in the yard at the California Men’s Colony near San Luis Obispo, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.
The inmate who died was identified as Matthew Cook, 25, who was serving a 13-year sentence for burglary, the department said.
A total of nine wounded inmates were taken to an outside hospital for treatment.
Lt. Monica Ayon, a spokeswoman for the prison, tells the San Luis Obispo Tribune that visitors were escorted out when the riot broke out. The incident was contained to the yard, which was cleared after about an hour.
No guards were hurt.
Officials say they don’t know what sparked the violence.
The California Men’s Colony is a male-only state prison with about 3,800 minimum and medium security inmates, located 200 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Berlin: Augenzeuge: Anti-AfD-Demonstranten angefahren

0

(Tsp)

Skype's not working on the latest iPhones but Microsoft is working on a fix

0

The Skype app on the iOS App Store seems to be ill-equipped for the release of the latest iterations of Apple’s smartphone, as users are reporting crashes on both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus.
The release of the newest iPhones may not have been met with as much enthusiasm as we have come to except, partially due to buyers holding out for the release of the iPhone X in November, but Apple still sold a large number of devices since their launch last Friday.
Now, it seems users of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are experiencing issues with the Skype app, with multiple reports of the app crashing on startup. The issue seems to be the result of a bug, possibly resulting from a lack of optimisation for the new devices.
After reports of the problem started cropping up on Twitter, Microsoft issued the following statement acknowledging the problem and promising a fix is in the works:
The page was also updated at 16:09 GMT Saturday to suggest that a fix had been developed and was currently in testing. At the time of writing, though, there are still some Twitter reports of Skype not working for users.

ACCC appeals court decision to dismiss case against LG

0

The competition watchdog has appealed the court’s decision to dismiss its case against LG for allegedly misleading consumers about their rights in relation to faulty LG TVs.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has appealed the Federal Court’s decision to dismiss the legal proceedings it brought forth against LG Electronics Australia in 2015.
The ACCC had alleged that the South Korean electronics company made false or misleading representations to consumers about their rights in relation to faulty LG products, including TVs.
The competition watchdog claimed that LG told customers that if a defect occurred on one of its TVs after warranty had expired, customers would only be entitled to a remedy if they paid for the cost of assessment.
Additionally, the ACCC said the consumer was only entitled to have the TV repaired — not to a refund or replacement — and that the consumer was liable for the labour costs of the repair.
Under Australian Consumer Law, customers have a guarantee of acceptable quality beyond a manufacturer’s warranty, and may still be entitled to a repair, refund, or replacement upon expiration.
However, on September 1,2017, Justice Middleton dismissed the ACCC’s allegations, concluding that LG was under no obligation to inform consumers of the existence of the Australian Consumer Law remedies available to them because the enquiry made by consumers related only to the manufacturer’s warranty.
“The ACCC has appealed this decision in order to seek clarity from the Full Federal Court. In particular, this appeal is about the extent to which manufacturers should inform people seeking a remedy for a faulty product about their consumer guarantee rights,” ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said in a statement on Monday.
“Products and services come with consumer guarantees which may provide remedies over and above those in any manufacturer’s warranty. The ACCC will take appropriate action to ensure that consumers are not misled about their consumer guarantee rights.”
The competition watchdog had previously brought legal action against LG for misleading or deceptive conduct in 2005,2006, and 2010.
In 2006, LG was found to have been in breach of the consumer protection provisions of the Trade Practices Act 1974 after the Federal Court ruled that the electronics giant made false or misleading representations in several of its online mobile telephone user manuals.
At the time, the ACCC warned LG against making misleading statements surrounding warranty and the rights of consumers in the future.
Additionally, the court ordered LG to refrain from making representations to similar effect in the future; implement an upgraded trade practices compliance program; arrange the publication of consumer notices on its website and in all major Australian newspapers; provide each of its mobile telephone retailers with a notice explaining the relevant provisions of the Act; and pay the ACCC’s costs.
In 2012, LG, along with Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, and Sharp, were warned by the ACCC for using the term “Wi-Fi ready” or “Wireless LAN ready” too loosely, and were made to amend their promotional and marketing material.
