Venus Williams advances in Australian Open

0

NewsHubMELBOURNE, Australia – It was inevitable after such an energetic performance in her second-round victory against Stefanie Voegele at the Australian Open that Venus Williams would get asked about transcending the generations in tennis.
The 36-year-old, seven-time major winner played the first of her record 73 Grand Slam tournaments at the French Open in 1997. Back then she got to play against the likes of Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova.
In a 6-3, 6-2 win over the 26-year-old Voegele on Wednesday, Williams mixed up her game, clearly not content on relying purely on the kind of power game that helped her make a mark on the sport.
“I have to talk about this every interview,” Williams said in reply to what has become a regular postmatch question to the oldest player in the women’s draw here. “I’ve played some of the greats.
“It’s an honor and privilege to start that young,” she added, laughing, “and play this old.”
Venus and Serena Williams withdrew from a scheduled first-round doubles match later Wednesday, citing an injury to Venus’ right elbow.
The sisters have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together, including four at the Australian Open.
Venus Williams put plenty into her second-round singles match, which lasted 1 hour, 23 minutes.
In the second set, serving and with a game point, she chased the ball like a teenager from one side of the court to the other, and back, trying to finish it off. Her forehand landed too long but her intention was clear. Get through the round ASAP.
She won the subsequent two points to hold.
At 15-15 and 5-2 in the second, she was still remonstrating with herself after missing a point. She finished off the match later in the same game, another break, to reach the third round. Williams lost to eventual semifinalist Johanna Konta in the opening round last year.
In the next round she’ll play Duan Yingying, who defeated Varvara Lepchenko, 6-1, 3-6, 10-8.
Venus is playing her 17th Australian Open but has never won the title. Her best run was to the final in 2003, when she lost to Serena.
In a later match, top-seeded Angelique Kerber needed three sets to defeat Carina Witthoeft, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-2.
No. 11 Elina Svitolina had a 6-4, 6-1 win over U. S. qualifier Julia Boserup to advance to a third-round match against No. 24 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over fellow Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva .
In another match, Alison Riske beat No. 20 Zhang Shuai 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-1.
After Djokovic dominated the opening set, Verdasco saved two break points in ninth game of the second, sending it eventually to the tiebreaker.
In the third set, Djokovic swept to a 3-0 lead and won in 2 hours, 20 minutes, extending Verdasco’s seven-year losing streak against the Serbian player.

Lady Gaga Goes Behind the Scenes of Super Bowl Halftime Show: "I've Been Planning This Since I Was 4"

Katie Atkinson, Billboard
Lady Gaga has a clear vision for her Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 5, and she’s giving fans a brief preview of what she’s been dreaming up for almost three decades in a new Pepsi behind-the-scenes video.
“I’ve been planning this since I was 4, so I know exactly what I’m going to do,” she says in the clip, going on to list the challenges of the most high-profile gig in music. “For me, it’s all about giving to the fans and bringing people together that wouldn’t normally come together,” she says. “The thing is, it’s such a big world stage, in terms of how many people see it, and it’s been done so many times. I think the challenge is to look at it and say, ‘What can I do differently? How can I elevate certain little things here and there and also make it about the music?’ This is where I’m supposed to be. ”
Perhaps the most exciting bit of the video for Little Monsters will be the choreography sneak peek, thanks to Gaga’s longtime dance guru Richy Jackson. We get a pretty in-depth look at the moves for “Bad Romance” — meaning we know that the 2009 Hot 100 No. 2 hit will be on the Super Bowl setlist.
“This is probably the greatest 12 minutes of our lives,” Jackson says of his decade with Gaga, all leading up to this moment.
Watch the BTS video below, and tune in to Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime show Feb. 5 on Fox.

Dallas Cowboys owner non-committal on Tony Romo's future

0

NewsHubAfter sticking with rookie sensation Dak Prescott for the stretch run, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the future of four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo with the team is still in flux.
Romo, 36, is owed $14 million next season and carries a $24.7 million cap hit should Jones decide to keep him.
“There’s several cards to be played,” Jones said Tuesday on his weekly radio interview with 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “Don’t think for one minute if you see something written or something said about what and where Romo is going to be relative to our team that there’s any credibility to it. There’s only one that can make that decision and there’s been no decision made. ”
Romo missed the Cowboys’ first 15 games after sustaining a back injury during the preseason and appeared in only one game, completing 3 of 4 passes for 29 yards and a touchdown in a 27-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 1.
Jones has long insisted that Romo will play in a Super Bowl before he retires and said in his interview with 105.3 The Fan that he believes Romo is still capable of playing at the level of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers .
“What you saw that veteran quarterback do in Rodgers out there, Romo is capable of doing,” Jones said. “Those are his kinds of plays. And so we’ve got a lot to think about here, but that’s in the future. ”
Rodgers threw for 356 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Green Bay’s last-second 34-31 win over the Cowboys in Sunday’s NFC divisional round playoff game. Prescott, 23, totaled 302 passing yards, three touchdowns and a pick for the Cowboys.

Capuano out as coach of last-place Islanders

0

NewsHubJack Capuano is out as head coach of the last-place New York Islanders , with the team announcing the move Tuesday amid its 17-17-8 start to the season.
Assistant general manager Doug Weight will take over as coach on an interim basis.
The move comes one day after the Islanders shut out the Boston Bruins 4-0. Snow said the halfway point of the season played a role in the timing of the move.
Editor’s Picks Firing of Jack Capuano has everything to do with keeping John Tavares
Naming of Doug Weight as interim coach is intended to send a message to their superstar captain that the New York Islanders are serious about winning.
“Obviously we’re not in a position where we want to be standing wise,” Snow said on a conference call Tuesday. “At the end of the day organizationally I don’t think Jack was probably going to be a coach that we were going to bring back. ”
Last spring, the Islanders won a playoff round for the first time since 1993, defeating the Florida Panthers in six games. Capuano also was named an assistant coach with Team USA at the World Cup of Hockey in September.
This season has been a major disappointment for the Islanders, who as of Tuesday were in last place in the 16-team Eastern Conference and eight points out of a wild-card playoff spot.
“It’s just been a different season that’s unfolded compared to the last two years,” Snow said. “We need to turn this ship around. ”
The Islanders are currently last in the Metropolitan Division and last overall in the Eastern Conference. A far cry from last season when they won their first playoff series since 1993.
Capuano, 50, had been behind the Islanders bench since 2010 and was the fourth-longest tenured coach in the NHL behind Claude Julien of the Bruins, Joel Quenneville of the Chicago Blackhawks and Dave Tippett of the Arizona Coyotes .
Capuano’s 483 games and 227 wins rank second in franchise history behind four-time Stanley Cup-winning Hall of Fame coach Al Arbour.
“It’s an honor to have served this historic franchise and its passionate fans,” he said in a statement released by the team. “I’d like to thank Garth and our ownership group for the opportunity to be the head coach of the Islanders. I’d also like to recognize our coaching staff, training staff and players for all of their hard work. ”
The Islanders are under new ownership with Jon Ledecky and Scott Malkin, and that group is expected to consider major organizational changes this offseason.
Snow signed Andrew Ladd to a $38.5 million, seven-year contract in July and the winger has been a disappointment with 12 points in 41 games. The Islanders have also dealt with some injuries and waived veteran goaltender Jaroslav Halak to send him to the minors.
Snow said he takes “100 percent” responsibility for the underachievement but that he doesn’t worry about his own job security.
“I don’t think there’s a player on our roster who I haven’t had a hand in either drafting, picking up off waivers, a trade, a free agent signing,” Snow said. “Same with the staff, whether it’s trainers, coaches, scouts. Obviously not hiding from the fact that it starts with me. ”
Weight, 45, has been with the Islanders in various coaching/front-office roles since retiring as a player after the 2010-11 season. He spent his final three playing seasons with the Isles.
Snow said Weight’s relationship with all players, including Ladd, was positive and that he called captain John Tavares and others to inform them of the “organizational decision” to fire Capuano.
Snow said assistant coach Bob Corkum would move down from the press box to the bench as part of the restructuring.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Trump accuser files defamation lawsuit over response to her allegations

0

NewsHubJan. 17 (UPI) — A former contestant on The Apprentice filed a defamation suit Tuesday in Los Angeles against President-elect Donald Trump for his public response to her accusation of sexual assault last year.
Summer Zervos and her attorney, Gloria Allred , announced at a press conference Tuesday that they have filed a lawsuit against Trump for lying about, attacking and denigrating her during rallies and interviews, but said she would be willing to drop the suit if the president-elect takes back what he said about her and admits it happened.
“Being branded a liar who came forward only for fame or at the manipulation of the [Hillary] Clinton campaign has been painful and demoralizing,” Zervos said in the lawsuit.
Through a spokesperson, Trump called the suit “more of the same from Gloria Allred. There is no truth to this absurd story. ”
In October, Zervos, who was a contestant on The Apprentice , accused Trump of kissing her without consent, pressing himself against her and groping her breast and body in an effort to seduce her several times during a meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
While she told friends and family at the time, she did not come forward until late in the 2016 presidential campaign when a recording of Trump bragging about harassing and groping women without consent sounded like what she has accused him of doing to her.
“I vaguely remember Ms. Zervos as one of the many contestants on The Apprentice over the years,” Trump said in a statement at the time. “To be clear, I never met her at a hotel or greeted her inappropriately a decade ago. That is not who I am as a person, and it is not how I’ve conducted my life. ”
In the statement, he claimed Zervos had contacted him for help and asked for a meeting at a California restaurant in April 2016 in attempt to discredit the accusation and blamed the Clinton campaign for accusations by more than a dozen women that the president-elect had sexually assaulted them.
In a speech later in the campaign , Trump claimed “every woman lied when they came forward to hurt my campaign” and threatened to sue them all after the election ended.
Zervos claims in the lawsuit that Trump’s use of an international bully pulpit opened her up to harrassment and threats of physical violence from his supporters, which she claims he knew could happen. Even still, Zervos said the lawsuit is not about money or fame, contrary to what Trump has said, and is not necessarily about just getting a day in court.
“I would still be willing to dismiss my case against him immediately for no monetary compensation if he will simply retract his false and defamatory statements about me and acknowledge that I told the truth about him,” Zervos said.

Maiduguri – A Nigerian Air Force fighter jet on a mission against Boko Haram extremists mistakenly bombed a refugee camp on Tuesday, killing more than 100 refugees and wounding aid workers, a Borno state official said.
A Red Cross worker said 20 volunteers with the aid group had been killed.
The state government official, who was helping to coordinate the evacuation of wounded from the remote area by helicopters, spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to reporters.
Military commander Major General Lucky Irabor confirmed the accidental bombardment in northeast Rann, near the border with Cameroon.
This is believed to be the first time Nigeria’s military has admitted to making such a mistake.
Among the wounded were two soldiers and Nigerians working for Doctors Without Borders and the International Committee of the Red Cross, Irabor said.
An ICRC employee told the AP that 20 Red Cross volunteers were among the dead.
He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not supposed to give information to reporters.
Doctors Without Borders said its team based in Rann had counted 50 bodies and treated 120 wounded.
A statement from spokesperson Etienne l’Hermitte urged authorities to facilitate land and air evacuations, saying, “Our medical and surgical teams in Cameroon and Chad are ready to treat wounded patients. We are in close contact with our teams, who are in shock following the event. ”
Irabor said he ordered the mission based on information that Boko Haram insurgents were gathering, along with geographic coordinates. It was too early to say if a tactical error was made, he said.
The general, who is the theater commander for counterinsurgency operations in northeast Nigeria, said the Air Force would not deliberately target civilians but there will be an investigation.
Villagers in the past have reported some civilian casualties in near-daily bombardments in northeastern Nigeria.
Some of the nearly 300 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014 and freed last year have said three of their classmates were killed by Air Force bombardments, according to the freed girls’ parents.

May's keynote Brexit speech highlights

0

NewsHubAs US President Barack Obama prepares to leave office on January 20, here are 10 things his presidency may be remembered for.
Multimedia · User Galleries · News in Pictures Send us your pictures · Send us your stories
London – British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday laid out her Brexit priorities and negotiating aims for the first time during a keynote speech in London.
Here are the key points.
SINGLE MARKET: May spelled out that Britain will have to leave the European Union’s single market in order to restrict immigration from the EU.
“What I am proposing cannot mean membership of the single market,” May said, adding however that she wanted British companies to have “maximum freedom to trade with and operate within European markets”.
IMMIGRATION: The thorny issue of Britain’s borders will be the keystone of the government’s negotiating policy, with May’s insistence on full control over immigration set to shape strategy across the board.
“Brexit must mean control of the number of people coming from Europe, and that is what we will deliver,” said the prime minister.
PARLIAMENT VOTE: Any break-up deal that the government strikes with the EU must be first be scrutinised by Britain’s parliament and put to a vote, May said in a concession to lawmakers’ demands.
“I can confirm today that the government will put the final deal to a vote in both houses of parliament before it comes into force,” she said.
‘PHASED’ DEAL: The government will have two years to negotiate a deal once May informs the EU by the end of March of Britain’s intention to leave.
May said she did not want a transition that was “some kind of permanent political purgatory” but a gradual introduction of the new agreement in order to avoid a “disruptive cliff edge” for businesses.
“A phased process of implementation, in which both Britain and the EU institutions and member states prepare for the new arrangements that will exist between us, will be in our mutual self interest”.
STRONG EU: May was keen to convince European leaders that the June 23 vote for Brexit was not designed to bring down the bloc, saying it was “overwhelmingly and compellingly in Britain’s national interest that the EU should succeed. ”
Of the Brexit vote, she said: “I know many fear that this might herald the beginning of a great unravelling of the EU. But let me be clear. I do not want that to happen”.
EU WARNING: May warned she would not accept any deal to punish Britain, saying it would be an “act of calamitous self-harm” that could trigger a trade war, with Britain slashing taxes to attract business.
“I do not believe that the EU’s leaders will seriously tell German exporters, French farmers, Spanish fishermen, the young unemployed of the eurozone, and millions of others, that they want to make them poorer, just to punish Britain and make a political point,” she said.
“No deal for Britain is better than a bad deal for Britain. ”
CUSTOMS UNION: Britain will not be able to remain a full member of the EU’s customs union, which sets uniform tariffs for countries outside the EU trading within the bloc, while striking its own trade deals — a priority for the government.
“I do not want Britain to be part of the common commercial policy and I do not want us to be bound by the common external tariff,” she said.
But May suggested Britain could remain a member if a new customs agreement was agreed.
EU BUDGET: May said Britain would be prepared to make “an appropriate contribution” to the EU budget in return for using some of its services, but stressed “the days of making vast contributions will end”.

Repealing Obamacare without a replacement could leave 18 million Americans uninsured

0

NewsHubJanuary 17, 2017
— WASHINGTON — Insurance premiums would soar for millions of Americans and 18 million more would be uninsured in just one year if Republicans scuttle much of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul without a replacement, Congress’ budget analysts said Tuesday.
Spotlighting potential perils for Republicans, the report immediately became a flashing hazard light for this year’s effort by Donald Trump and GOP lawmakers to annul Obama’s law and — in a more complicated challenge — institute their own alternative.
It also swiftly became political fodder in what is expected to be one of this year’s biggest battles in Congress.
Republicans have produced several outlines for how they’d redraft Obama’s 2010 statute, but they’ve failed to unite behind one plan. President-elect Trump and GOP congressional leaders have at times offered clashing descriptions of their shared top goal, so eventual success is hardly guaranteed.
Tuesday’s evaluation came from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, joined by Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation.
Together, they analyzed a Republican-written bill, vetoed by Obama last January, that would have erased major portions of his overhaul. Those included tax penalties for people who fail to buy insurance and for larger companies that don’t cover workers, federal subsidies to help consumers buy policies on the law’s online marketplaces and an expansion of Medicaid coverage for low-income people.
The new report said under such a measure, premiums for individual policies — excluding the coverage many workers get from employers — would swell by up to 25 percent the first year after enactment and double by 2026. The number of uninsured would reach 32 million over the decade, the analysts said.
However, Republicans say there’s a big difference between that 2016 bill and this year’s plan: Last year’s version would not have replaced Obama’s statute with a GOP alternative, while Republicans insist replacement will be an integral part of their new health care drive.
Citing that difference, Donald Stewart, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said the report “assumes a situation that simply doesn’t exist and that no one in Congress advocates. ” AshLee Strong, spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., called the estimates “meaningless” because they ignore plans for legislation and regulatory actions by the incoming Trump administration for revamping how people could obtain coverage.
“Nonpartisan statistics don’t lie,” countered Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N. Y., who said the report showed Republican plans to void Obama’s overhaul “will increase health care costs for millions of Americans and kick millions more off of their health insurance. ” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said it illustrated that the GOP effort “will be nothing less than a nightmare for the American people. ”
Trump seemed to complicate the GOP drive last weekend when he told The Washington Post that a forthcoming Republican plan would provide “insurance for everybody. ” In contrast, some congressional Republicans have described their goals more modestly, saying they will offer “universal access. ”
In one sign of how GOP plans continue proliferating, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she and Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., are planning legislation that would let states retain coverage under Obama’s law or choose different options.
The CBO analysis has particular weight because Republicans have cited last year’s bill as a starting point for their 2017 drive to erase Obama’s law.
For Senate procedural reasons, that 2016 GOP bill also had to leave intact some mandates that Obama’s law has imposed on insurers. Those include requiring coverage of certain services and barring insurers from denying policies to sick people or charging them higher rates.
Those same Senate procedures could make it hard for Republicans to erase the mandates this year, too. That would make things tough for the GOP because those insurance requirements tend to drive insurers’ costs higher, and leaving them in force while other parts of Obama’s statute are erased could wreak havoc on markets.
CBO said that under the 2016 Republican bill, the number of insured people would fall mostly from annulling the tax penalties Obama’s law imposes on people who don’t buy policies: Some people would simply drop out if not forced to buy insurance. In addition, some insurers would leave individual insurance markets as consumers stopped buying coverage.
Some 59 million people under age 65 — about 1 in 5 — would be uninsured by 2026, the report said, compared to 28 million under Obama’s law.
Premiums would rise because without a tax penalty to fear, many people would stop buying insurance. Since disproportionate numbers of sicker people would be likely to retain coverage, insurers’ costs would rise and higher premiums would follow.
The report estimated that half of Americans live where no insurers would sell individual policies in the first year after marketplace subsidies were eliminated. That would grow to 3 in 4 people by 2026.
At her last official session with reporters, Obama’s outgoing health secretary, Sylvia Burwell, said a GOP repeal without a replacement would push the market into a “negative spiral. ”
In early signs of grassroots rumbling, KHQ-TV news reported that Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., was interrupted by chants and booing at a Monday event in Spokane, Washington. Denver TV’s 9News reported that Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., stealthily left a Saturday community event early with more than 100 people waiting to talk to him. Both back repeal of Obama’s overhaul.
Coffman spokesman Daniel Bucheli said the meeting room was reserved for only 90 minutes. McMorris Rodgers spokeswoman Molly Drenkard said the lawmaker said she wants to keep communications open between foes and supporters of Obama’s law.

HPE acquires SimpliVity for $650M in cash

0

NewsHubHPE today announced that it has acquired data management platform SimpliVity for $650 million in cash.
SimpliVity is one of the many companies in this space focused on what is often called “hyperconverged infrastructure.” That sounds like somebody’s buzzword — and it definitely is — but the core idea is pretty sound: hyperconverged systems combine compute, storage and networking into a single system.
SimpliVity’s flagship product is the OmniCube hyperconverged infrastructure appliance, but the company has also worked with Lenovo, Dell, Cisco and Huawei to bring the software part of its solution to their servers.
For HPE, the idea here is clearly to expand its existing infrastructure, automation and cloud services with SimpliVity’s platform.
“This transaction expands HPE’s software-defined capability and fits squarely within our strategy to make Hybrid IT simple for customers,” wrote Meg Whitman, president and CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, in today’s announcement. “More and more customers are looking for solutions that bring them secure, highly resilient, on-premises infrastructure at cloud economics. That’s exactly where we’re focused.”
SimpliVity was founded in 2009; over the last couple of years, it raised almost $276 million in four funding rounds led by the likes of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Accel Partners, DFJ Growth, CRV and Waypoint Capital. At $650 million, that’s not a huge exit for these investors, especially given that the company was valued at over $1 billion when it raised its Series D round in 2015.
As for HPE, the company has mostly been in the news for selling off some of its business lately. Last September, for example, it sold off most of its software unit in a deal worth roughly $8.8 billion. Then, in November, it also sold off its OpenStack and Cloud Foundry assets to SUSE (which itself is owned by Micro Focus, too). Chances are the company is seeing an opening in the hyperconverged market and is looking to use some of the cash it gained from those sales to strengthen its position there.
