NewsHubThe US Department of Labor has filed an employee pay discrimination suit against Oracle.
The US Department of Labor filed a lawsuit against Oracle alleging pay discrimination practices against female, African American and Asian employees.
In addition, the department alleges that Oracle had a “systemic practice of favoring Asian workers in its recruiting and hiring practices for product development and other technical roles. ”
Oracle spokeswoman Deborah Hellinger said:
The Department of Labor said it reviewed Oracle’s equal employment opportunity practices starting in 2014. Oracle also didn’t reply to the department’s routine requests.
According to the Department of Labor ( complaint ):
For Oracle, the lawsuit could turn out to be costly. The Department of Labor noted that Oracle has a bevy of government contracts that could be at risk.

Trafił do policyjnej izby zatrzymań, skąd zostanie przewieziony do zakładu karnego.
“Łowcy cieni” to policjanci tworzący elitarną, tajną komórkę CBŚP.

S. Korean businessman 'murdered in Philippine police HQ'

0

NewsHubA South Korean businessman kidnapped by Philippine policemen under the guise of a raid on illegal drugs was murdered at the national police headquarters in Manila, authorities said Thursday.
Philippine police chief Ronald Dela Rosa said he felt deep shame as he announced the latest development in the case, which has fuelled fears about widespread abuse by officers as they prosecute President Rodrigo Duterte’s deadly anti-drug war.
“They know the whole story of how they took him, brought him to Camp Crame, and strangled him,” Dela Rosa said, referring to police officers accused of involvement in kidnapping and murdering the businessman, who was aged in his 50s.
Camp Crame, the national police headquarters, has a jail as well as administration buildings where all the top officers are based. It was not clear exactly where the man, who has been identified only by his surname of Ji, was killed in Camp Crame.
Ji disappeared from his home in Angeles city, about two hours’ drive north of Manila, in October last year.
The kidnappers demanded from his wife a ransom and she initially paid five million pesos ($100,000), thinking he was still alive, authorities said on Wednesday when they first announced details of the police officers’ involvement.
Police chiefs said then that three officers were directly involved and one superior oversaw the operation.
The policemen led the wife to believe her husband was alive for months, but he had been in fact killed on the day he was abducted, police said on Wednesday.
The policemen were from a special taskforce focused solely on illegal drugs stationed at Camp Crame.
The incident has shocked and angered the South Korean government, with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-Se demanding those behind the crime be brought to justice.
Dela Rosa expressed deep regret on Thursday.
“I want to just disappear from the face of the Earth because I am so ashamed of what my people did,” he said.
The police force have been under intense scrutiny as the frontline troops in Duterte’s efforts to eradicate illegal drugs in society, with human rights groups accusing them of mass extrajudicial killings.
Police have reported killing 2,250 drug suspects since Duterte assumed office, with 3,710 others murdered by unknown suspects who at times have left signs at the crime scenes accusing their victims of being drug dealers or addicts.
Duterte has promised to protect police from prosecution if they are charged with murder for killing a drug suspect, leading to fears corrupt officers feel they have a green light to commit crimes in the name of the drug war.
Duterte on Thursday reiterated his support for police.
“I won’t neglect my police. If you work in the performance of your duty, I will protect you. You have no problem,” he told police officials.
Duterte has not commented directly on Ji’s murder.

Kanye West Not Invited to Perform at Trump Inauguration

Gil Kaufman, Billboard
A spokesperson for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration committee told CNN that friend-of-Donald Kanye West was not invited to perform at the real estate mogul’s inaugural because his music wasn’t right for the “typically and traditionally American event. ”
Tom Barrack, chairman of the Presidential Inauguration Committee, told CNN’s Erin Burnett that the inauguration wasn’t a “fitting” venue for West, who famously met with Trump in December and posed for a stiff photo at Trump Tower afterwards , and whose music is about to be the subject of a course at Washington University in St. Louis called “Politics of Kanye West: Black Genius and Sonic Aesthetics. ”
He added, “He’s been great, he considers himself a friend of the president-elect, but it’s not the venue. ”
Kanye, who was born in Chicago and performs a style of music, hip-hop, that was invented in the United States on the streets of Trump’s New York in the late 1970s, performed at MTV’s Inaugural Youth Ball in honor of President Obama in 2009.
“It’s going to be typically and traditionally American, and Kanye is a great guy, we just haven’t asked him to perform. And we move on with our agenda,” Barrack added.

Paul McCartney Files Lawsuit Against Sony/ATV Over Copyright

0

NewsHubPaul McCartney says he wants his music to get back to where it once belonged.
McCartney filed a lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan on Wednesday against Sony/ATV over copyright ownership of the many hit songs he wrote with John Lennon as part of The Beatles.
The copyrights were famously bought by Michael Jackson in 1985 and then fully sold over to Sony/ATV following his death. McCartney has long wanted the copyrights, and the filing says he has sent notice to Sony/ATV saying that he will claim them back under a provision of U. S. copyright law that makes that possible after a certain time.
The first song eligible to be claimed back is “Love Me Do,” in October 2018. The rest of the catalog would follow in years after, ending in 2026.
McCartney wants a ruling to say his claiming them doesn’t represent a legal breach of any contract or publishing agreement that Sony/ATV could use against him.
“Defendants have attempted to reserve their rights to challenge Paul McCartney’s exercise of his termination rights on contractual ground,” the filing says.
It adds, “A judicial declaration is necessary and appropriate at this time so that Paul McCartney can rely on quiet, unclouded title to his rights. ”
Sony/ATV said it had “the highest respect” for McCartney.
“We have collaborated closely with both Sir Paul and the late John Lennon’s Estate for decades to protect, preserve and promote the catalog’s long-term value,” the company said, adding that it was “disappointed” over the filing of the lawsuit, which it said is “unnecessary and premature. “

Mac, Linux malware discovered targeting biomedical research

0

NewsHubA Mac malware that’s been spying on biomedical research centers may have been circulating undetected for years, according to new research.
Antivirus vendor Malwarebytes uncovered the malicious code, after an IT administrator spotted unusual network traffic coming from an infected Mac.
The malware, which Apple calls Fruitfly, is designed to take screen captures, access the Mac’s webcam, and simulate mouse clicks and key presses, allowing for remote control by a hacker, Malwarebytes said in a blog post on Wednesday.
The security firm said that neither it nor Apple have identified how the malware has been spreading. But whoever designed it relied on “ancient” coding functions, dating back before the Mac OS X operating system launch in 2001, said Malwarebytes researcher Thomas Reed in the blog post.
Surprisingly, Fruitfly is also built with Linux shell commands. Reed said he tried running the malware on a Linux machine and found that everything “ran just fine” except for Mac-specific code.
The old coding, along with the Linux commands, suggest that the malware’s makers maybe didn’t “know the Mac very well and were relying on old documentation” to develop it, Reed wrote.
Security researchers have said Mac malware is pretty rare. That’s because hackers generally focus on attacking Windows-based devices, which there are far more of.
This particular Mac malware is easy to spot, according to Reed. It comes in two files, one of which acts as a launch agent.
Nevertheless, Malwarebytes found evidence suggesting that Fruitfly has been infecting Macs undetected for at least few years. For instance, a change made to the malicious coding was done to address OS X Yosemite, which was launched in Oct. 2014.
Reed said this malware has remained undetected probably because it’s been used “in very tightly targeted attacks, limiting its exposure.”
He speculates the malware was designed for espionage, given that it was found targeting biomedical research institutions. Once the malware infects a Mac, it will also attempt to retrieve information on local network and other devices connected to it.
Fortunately, Apple has already released an update that protects Macs from Fruitfly infections.

China says can resolve trade disputes with new U. S. government

0

NewsHubChina and the United States can resolve any trade disputes through talks, the government said on Thursday, as a Chinese newspaper warned U. S. business could be targets for retaliation in any trade war ushered in by President-elect Donald Trump.
Trump, who is sworn into office on Friday, has criticised China’s trade practices and threatened to impose punitive tariffs on Chinese imports.
Billionaire investor Wilbur Ross, Trump’s choice for commerce secretary, voiced sharp criticism of China’s trade practices on Wednesday, telling senators he would seek new ways of combating them.
Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesman Sun Jiwen said the government was willing to work with the new U. S. administration to promote the healthy development of commercial ties.
“I believe China and the United States can resolve any disputes through dialogue and negotiation and that the China-U. S. commercial relationship will not significantly stray from the path of mutual benefit,” Sun told reporters.
“Both sides benefit with cooperation, and both are hurt with conflict,” he added.
But an influential state-run newspaper took a harsher line.
In an editorial, the Global Times said that as the United States has the stronger economy, China may suffer more once a trade war starts, but China “will take the U. S. on to the end”.
“There are few cases in modern history where only one party surrendered in a trade war; rather, the two parties ended up compromising with each other. How could Trump’s team believe China would surrender without any countermeasures? ” it said.
“The arrogant Trump team has underestimated China’s ability to retaliate. China is a major buyer of American cotton, wheat, beans and Boeing aircraft,” the paper added in the editorial carried in its Chinese and English-language editions, without elaborating.
Boeing Co’s China office declined to comment.
Boeing anticipates China will need 6,800 new jetliners worth $1 trillion over the next 20 years.
In October, Boeing and Chinese planemaker Commercial Aircraft Corp of China Ltd signed an agreement to open a Boeing 737 completion facility in the Chinese coastal city of Zhoushan.
The widely-read Global Times, run by the ruling Communist Party’s official People’s Daily, is known for its stridently nationalist tone, but its editorials cannot be viewed as representing government policies or official statements.
In recent weeks, the Global Times and other state-run Chinese news outlets have issued several warnings of possible retaliation if the Trump administration carries out threats of tariffs or undermines Beijing’s claims on self-ruled Taiwan.
In November, the Global Times warned that China could switch large orders from Boeing to Europe, Apple phones would “essentially be crowded out” and U. S. soybeans and corn banished from China if Trump creates problems for China on trade.
China is the world’s top producer and consumer of cotton and top buyer of grains such as soybeans to feed its vast livestock industry.

Ex-VW CEO Winterkorn testifies to German parliament inquiry

NewsHubFormer Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn is testifying before a German parliamentary inquiry in his first public appearance since he resigned in the wake of the company’s diesel emissions scandal.
Winterkorn, flanked by two lawyers, told the panel Thursday “it is not the case” he knew earlier than previously thought of the scandal. He said he’s still seeking “satisfactory answers” as to what happened.
