Aura Health launches meditation app for people who can’t sit still for long

0

NewsHubAs someone who considers themselves to be into meditation, I don’t meditate very often. I’ve had Headspace on my phone for over a year at this point, but I’ve probably used it fewer than 20 times. In the last couple of days, I’ve been trying out a recently launched meditation app for iOS called Aura.
Aura’s bread and butter is short, three-to-seven-minute meditations based on your current mood — be that stressed, anxious, happy or sad. Other meditation apps tend to focus on longer, at least 10-minute-long meditations. Aura also collects data around demographics and age to better understand what types of meditations certain people are looking for.
“We’re trying to build intelligence around how to make people happier,” Aura Health co-founder and CEO Steve Lee told me. “Most people really have a hard time forming a habit around meditation and building a foundation for that. We’re playing around with the shortest possible amount of effort it takes to make it a habit while receiving the benefits of meditation.”
Aura is free to use if you’re just into one, three-minute meditation a day. Premium users, who pay $12.99 a month or $7.92 a month if they buy the full year in advance, get access to seven-minute meditations and can access them more than once a day.
There are currently about 200 meditations available, which Aura Health serves up to you based on the mood you say you’re in.
“We’re fundamentally an intelligence company,” Aura Health co-founder Daniel Lee said. “We’re leveraging machine learning to personalize every session for users.”
Aura Health is currently bootstrapped, but the company says it’s open to raising funding in the future. Other companies in the space, like Headspace and Calm, are pretty well funded. Headspace has raised over $30 million and Calm has raised $1.5 million.

It's official: OnePlus rolls out its Android 7.0 Nougat update to the 3 and 3T

0

NewsHubThree days ago, OnePlus released another preview of its Android 7.0 update. Like its other beta releases, the latest one was exclusively available for the 3 – but with no sign of a preview for the 3T, and with only a few days of the year remaining, it seemed very unlikely that the company would fulfill its promise to begin upgrading both handsets to Nougat by the end of 2016.
But in the last few hours of the year, OnePlus said that it had begun rolling out OxygenOS 4.0, based on Android 7.0 Nougat, to both the 3 and the 3T. The firm’s list of key improvements for both flagship-class handsets is identical:
OnePlus says that its over-the-air update will be “incremental”, reaching a small percentage of users initially, before a broader rollout begins “in a few days”.
As the company had previously warned, if you’ve been running one of the preview builds on your OnePlus 3, you’ll have to reset your handset and wipe its data to be able to install the official, non-preview release of OxygenOS 4.0.

Microsoft launches Insider community blog, promises new insights into Windows 10 development

0

NewsHubThere are millions of people around the world on the Windows Insider Program , helping Microsoft to test previews of Windows 10, and suggesting improvements and new features – many of which are then developed and integrated into updates for the hundreds of millions of devices running the OS. But the company is keen to develop the program further, making it about far more than just getting early access to new OS builds.
In 2016, Microsoft launched #WINsiders4Good, an initiative to explore how the enthusiasts helping it to improve Windows 10 could come together to solve wider problems using its software and technologies. In October, for example, Microsoft hosted a ‘Create-A-Thon’ event in London , encouraging Insiders to consider how best to use Windows 10 and the company’s app development tools “to tackle housing issues in our local communities”.
Windows Insider Program chief Dona Sarkar said that initiatives such as these have proved extremely popular among Insiders, and that in 2017, the program will expand further on two fronts. In addition to making new Windows 10 builds available for testing and feedback, she said that Microsoft will be making a greater effort to bring the Insider community together, offering new insights into how the development process unfolds, while also encouraging Insiders to do even more to “use tech to make a lasting impact in the world”.
Recognizing that such efforts go beyond just Windows 10, the #WINsiders4Good campaign is now known as #Insiders4Good. Coinciding with that change, Microsoft has also launched a new blog , a home for the Windows Insider community itself.
The blog is “a way for us to talk to you,” Dona said, “for you to talk to each other and for us to talk to the outside world about our various projects, passions, and challenges. ” She added that the Insider team at Microsoft has been “experimenting with ways for [Insiders] to communicate and collaborate” over the last two weeks, and that the new blog is just the first step in its plans.
The blog already includes guest posts from some Insiders and Fellows around the world, and those who wish to contribute and share their stories on the blog can email Microsoft via NinjaCatTeam@outlook.com .
But while the #Insiders4Good blog “will focus more on the community and projects aspect” of the Insider Program, Dona said that Microsoft will continue to improve its existing channels like the Windows Blog to keep Insiders informed on new builds and other developments, and to offer deeper and more frequent insights into how the program is managed. She explained:

French 'right to disconnect' law goes into effect

0

NewsHubNow thanks to a new law dubbed “the right to disconnect,” having to worry about being contacted out of hours may soon be a thing of the past for French citizens.
From January 1, 2017, companies with more than 50 employees will be forced to conduct discussions as to when workers have the right to ignore e-mail and other communications without repercussions.
In the event that a deal between employer and employee can’t be reached, The Guardian notes that the employer must publish a charter that explicitly outlines the demands on, and rights of, employees when not on the clock.
At the same time, Xavier Zunigo, a French workplace expert, said workers won’t want to lose the autonomy and flexibility that digital devices afford.
France has had a work week of just 35 hours in place for nearly 20 years.
Supporters of the law claim that employees that are required to work out of hours aren’t being compensated for the extra work. What’s more, they say that the overuse of such digital devices can lead to increased stress, burnout, sleeplessness and even relationship problems.
Declining to work after hours may also reflect poorly on an employee, giving the impression that said employee isn’t committed to their employer.

There’s an age old saying that humans tend to overestimate what can be accomplished in one day, but underestimate what can be accomplished in one year. As 2016 comes to a close, it is a good time to zoom out the lens, and get reflective on what has happened this year, and predictive about what we are excited about for the coming 3-5 years.

Pranksters change iconic Hollywood sign to 'Hollyweed'

0

NewsHubThe famed Hollywood sign high in the hills over Los Angeles got a little higher on Sunday, when someone altered two of its letters to make it read “Hollyweed. ”
Police said unidentified thrill-seekers had climbed up and arranged tarps over the two letter “O’s” to make them look like “E’s,” CBS affiliate KCAL reported.
Each letter is 45 feet (13.7 meters) high, so the feat would have required not just bravado but considerable athleticism.
The daring act may have been taken in celebration of a measure approved in November, when California voters passed an amendment legalizing recreational use of marijuana.
A police spokesman said surveillance cameras might help them identify the culprit or culprits; the act was being treated as a case of misdemeanor trespassing.
It was not the first such incident since the sign was first erected in 1923 — at the time as “Hollywoodland” — to advertise a local real estate development.
Perhaps not coincidentally, the same lettering change to the sign was made exactly 41 years ago, when a California law relaxing penalties for marijuana use took effect.
That alteration turned out to be the work of a college art student, one Danny Finegood.
Along with friends, he later returned to the sign on Easter Day 1976 to make it read “Holywood,” and they changed it again in 1990 to read “Oil War” in protest of the Persian Gulf conflict.
Finegood’s original handiwork, which he considered an act of environmental sculpture, was done for an art class project, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Using $50 in sheets and ropes, he and three friends made the change — and Finegood received an “A” from his art teacher.
But while he might have inspired the latest act of hillside mischief, Finegood cannot be blamed for it. He died in 2007, aged 52.
Largely because of his work, however, Los Angeles officials increased security around the sign, installing a fence, alarms and eventually a closed-circuit surveillance system.
It is not clear how someone made it through those barriers Sunday, but Danny Finegood might well have admired their work.

Nightclub attack: Istanbul police continue search

0

NewsHubThe manhunt continues for a gunman who killed 39 people in an Istanbul nightclub as Turkey marked the start of the new year.
The unknown assailant opened fire at Reina nightclub early on Sunday, before managing to flee amid the chaos.
The motive for the attack is not clear, but suspicion has fallen on the Islamic State group, already linked to at least two terror attacks in Turkey last year.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said such groups tried “to create chaos”.
“They are trying to… demoralise our people and destabilise our country,” he added.
The banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has distanced themselves from the killings, with the PKK’s Murat Karayilan quoted as saying they would “never target innocent civilians”.
Earlier, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu confirmed a “manhunt for the terrorist is under way. Police have launched operations. We hope the attacker will be captured soon. ”
But as the search continued, the first funerals of those killed at the nightclub were held.
More than half of those killed in the attack – which lasted seven minutes – were foreign, according to the state run Anadolu Agency.
Among them were citizens from Israel, France, Tunisia, Lebanon, India, Belgium, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
The club, which sits on the banks of the Bosphorus, is one of Istanbul’s most upmarket venues – often frequented by singers and sports stars.
However, among the first to die was a security guard, identified as Fatih Cakmak, who had been standing at the door.
His brother said he narrowly escaped a double bombing three weeks ago, having been on duty when Kurdish militants launched an attack near a football stadium , killing at least 44 people, mostly police.
At least 69 people are being treated in hospital, officials said, with three in a serious condition.
Istanbul was already on high alert with some 17,000 police officers on duty in the city, following a string of terror attacks in recent months.

French workers win right to ignore work emails after hours

0

NewsHubWill your office ever leave you alone?
Just say “non. ”
That’s how many French workers might channel Nancy Reagan, as they celebrate the introduction of a new law on January 1 that allows them to finally ignore their bosses.
Well, at least ignore their bosses’ emails out of hours.
As Agence France-Presse reports , this so-called “right to disconnect” demands that all businesses with more than 50 employees negotiate new rules of online engagement with their workers.
It’s common, and not just in France, for bosses to think that employees can be emailed at any time of day or night. After all, the ease and ubiquity of technology has made us always-on creatures.
The trouble is that such constant work pressure has made human moods tend toward the always-off. Psychologists have already raised the alarm that the constant work emailing can be, quite simply, toxic to emotional health.
Why should we be thinking about work when we could be fixing dinner and moving on to a little Netflix-and-chill? Does it make us more productive? Or does it simply make us more tired and angry?
As with so much in France, the intention here is noble, but the practical aspects invite closer scrutiny.
Might some unions simply sell their members’ relaxation for a little more money? Might they reach an agreement that says: “All right, you can email us whenever you want, but give us a 10 percent raise? ”
Moreover, is there actually any incentive for employers to negotiate? As the law currently stands, there’s no penalty for companies that don’t reach agreement with their employees.
Still, the French have been thinking about such laws for some time. Two years ago , employees in the digital and consultancy sectors were told that emails after 6 p.m. would only be allowed “under exceptional circumstances. ”
I can imagine that every day might have suddenly become exceptional.
Some European companies foresaw this trend many moons ago. In 2011, for example, Volkswagen agreed to deactivate its workers’ BlackBerrys out of hours , so that bosses couldn’t pester them.
But what about the US? Could we ever imagine sinking to this dark level of human kindness? Could we ever conceive that bosses would be told to just stop it with the emailing and Slacking when we’re watching ” Monday Night Football ” or ” Stranger Things “?
I fear this is hoping for too much. After all, we’re heading into an era of deregulation, in which companies will be a little — or a lot — freer to do as they wish.
We’re already in an era when one company was accused of firing an employee for deleting an iPhone app that tracked her 24 hours a day.
The mere thought that employers should now respect home lives might seem quaint. Or even foreign.

Narrow Your Goals Down to a Couple Areas You Actually Care About

0

NewsHubAs the new year kicks off, it’s a great time to set new goals. If you’re hoping to lose weight , work out , learn more , get a promotion , be more confident , and finally organize your sock drawer , maybe you should just pick one or two at first.
As business site Harvard Business Review explains, we often fail our goals when we don’t have enough investment in achieving them. It’s not that we don’t want to learn a new language or take a pottery class. It’s just that we have other things we care about more. When you divide your focus over a large number of goals, you can’t devote your focus or attention to any of them. Instead, focus on the goals that you’re most passionate about and worry about the rest later:
Capitalizing on the enthusiasm and energy you have for a goal will give you the drive to accomplish that goal. It’s okay to leave some other ambitions on the table and come back to them later when you have more space in your life to pursue it.
