WASHINGTON — White House press secretary Sean Spicer may no longer enjoy the full confidence of President Trump.
That’s what Trump suggested during an exchange Friday with Fox News’ Jeanine Pirro when she asked directly whether Spicer will continue in the high-pressure post.
“He’s doing a good job but he gets beat up, ” Trump responded.
Spicer has been the public face of the Trump administration since the inaugural on Jan. 20, when the president immediately deployed his press secretary to defend the size of the crowd at the ceremony.
But with Spicer out on US Naval Reserve duty this week, speculation quickly began swirling that his substitute — principal deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders — could be under consideration to replace him.
Pressed by Pirro to respond to such rumors, Trump offered no assurances that Spicer is safe.
“Is he your press secretary today and tomorrow?” Pirro asked the president.
“Yeah, he is, sure, ” Trump responded.
Asked again if Spicer will be around “tomorrow, ” the president simply said that he’s “been there from the beginning.”
Sanders told Politico on Thursday that reports of her being primed to take over are “ridiculous.”
“Sean is doing a great job, and I enjoy working with him, ” she said.
