Pilot sufferes serious burns after blimp crashes near site of U. S. Open

A blimp not affiliated with the U. S. Open crashed near the course Thursday, injuring the pilot who was said to be « OK,  » according to a representative for the company that operates the blimp.
ERIN, Wis. — The pilot of a blimp suffered serious burns after the aircraft crashed near the U. S. Open in Wisconsin during the opening round of the golf tournament, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.
The man was the only person in the blimp and he was taken to a hospital by medical helicopter authorities said in a statement.
The statement says the blimp was on fire or smoking and went down rapidly. The sheriff’s office asked the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board to help investigate the cause.
The USGA said in a statement that the advertising blimp crashed in an open field about half a mile from the Erin Hills golf course.
The U. S. Open, one of golf’s four majors, opened play Thursday at the course in Erin, Wisconsin.
