President Donald Trump’s lawyer denied a report that said Trump’s legal team is “discussing the president’s authority to grant pardons.”
Jay Sekulow’s comments came after The Washington Post reported Thursday that the president’s legal team was looking into the his authority to grant pardons, saying Trump himself was asking questions to his advisers about his presidential right to pardon himself, family members and aides.
“Pardons pertaining to the ongoing federal probe into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russian election meddling are not being discussed and are not on the table, ” Sekulow said Friday. (RELATED: Trump’s Lawyer Says Donald Jr.’s Meeting With Russian Was Legal [VIDEO] )
“The President…shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment, ” the U. S. Constitution says when outlining pardon powers in Article II.
Pardons can only be granted for federal crimes. They do not apply against state or civil prosecutions, and cannot end an impeachment proceeding.
