I’m not complaining that “Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom” was delayed until 2018. It makes a busy holiday season more bearable and gives the role-playing game the spotlight in the early part of the year.
I had a chance to look at the sequel to “ Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch ” and came away impressed the upcoming RPG. Although Studio Ghibli is no longer directly involved, the “Revenant Kingdom” still retains the lush cartoonlike visuals but the combat system goes through a transformation. Instead of a turn-based system that incorporates tamed familiars, the main characters take an active role in combat.
It’s more of an action RPG this time around, but “Revenant Kingdom” maintains its quirks. Familiars are replaced with creatures called Higgledies. These are sprites that are based on natural elements such as fire and wind. They are strewn across the battlefield and Evan, the protagonist, can use them to augment his attacks and spells. It’s an interesting system that makes use of the battlefield as players duke it out with foes.
In some cases, some enemies are hard to reach. Sometimes they’ll be flying in the air. When that happens, Evan can reach them by firing magic from a wand to knock them down. Lastly, there are power-ups that randomly appear on the battlefield. One of them activates Evan’s Awakening, which makes him almost invincible. It can give players that final push to defeat a boss.
“Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom” is scheduled for release Jan. 19,2018, on the PlayStation 4 and PC.
