Bears tight end Zach Miller had one of those horrifying football injuries that didn’t just threaten his football career – it was a gruesome knee injury that could have potentially cost him his leg. In an emotional interview posted on the Bears official account, he recalled the moment it happened – and how he was at first, more concerned with making the play.
« I remember coming over and I remember getting one and when I secured it, I felt my leg pop. I wasn’t sure that it was that bad – I knew I had an injury. But in my mind, it was just ‘hold onto the ball as long as you can’. Sitting there on the ground, I remember taking and setting it down… I wasn’t in pain, I was actually calm. »
Later, when the severity of the injury set in, Miller said he just remembered telling the doctor at the hospital: « Save my leg, please. »
« I think the first couple of days were the worst, just trying to understand it. And then once I realized ‘alright, worrying about that, wondering why, the what ifs aren’t going to help’, I got to be able to accept it and that was good. »
Miller said he was inspired by a 16-year-old player who had a similar injury – and without the same care that Miller received, ended up losing his leg.
« He helps me. He’s a special kid. He gets me through everything. »
