While speaking with Payday 2 developer Overkill Software, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman reveals that one of his favorite video games is Bungie’s Destiny 2.
When Robert Kirkman isn’t busy killing off fan favorite characters in the pages of The Walking Dead comic book, he likes to spend some of his free time playing video games. This is according to Kirkman himself, who revealed that one of his favorite current video games is Bungie’s Destiny 2 while discussing Overkill’s upcoming The Walking Dead game in a video interview.
Kirkman also pointed to the original Wolfenstein and Doom games as some of his favorite FPS titles. Kirkman’s affinity for the first-person shooter genre is one of the reasons why Overkill Software is working on an FPS set in The Walking Dead universe, though it remains to be seen if Kirkman’s favorite FPS games will influence the development of that project or not.
Something fans may notice in the video interview with Kirkman is that he refers to Overkill’s The Walking Dead as the “first” FPS Walking Dead game. This isn’t actually true, as The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct released back in 2013, though it was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews. Kirkman has always tried to distance himself from Survival Instinct, as that game is based on AMC’s television adaptation and not his comics, so it’s not all that surprising that he seemingly forgot it existed.
It’s safe to say that Survival Instinct won’t influence Overkill’s The Walking Dead, but since Destiny 2 is one of Kirkman’s favorite games, elements of that game may very well carry over. We know that Overkill’s The Walking Dead will have four-player co-op, but perhaps it will also feature some kind of versus multiplayer mode to emulate Destiny 2‘s Crucible. Or maybe it will feature raids and other activities for players to complete together besides just the dedicated story missions.
Regardless of what Overkill’s The Walking Dead has in store, it’s always interesting to learn celebrity video game habits. It will be interesting to see if Destiny 2 will have an impact on the development of Overkill’s The Walking Dead, or any other future video game projects set in The Walking Dead universe.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
