With holiday sales and new video game releases, November is easily one of the busiest months of the year in terms of revenue for the games industry. Microsoft may have dropped the price of the Xbox One S and launched the brand-new 4K capable Xbox One X, but it couldn’t beat out Sony in terms of unit sales. Instead, Microsoft took home the crown for generating the most dollar sales last month (via VentureBeat).
“Sony’s PlayStation 4 sold the most units of any hardware platform in the month of November,” said NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. “While Microsoft’s Xbox One drove the highest dollar sales of any hardware platform during the month.”
The Xbox One may not have outsold the PlayStation 4 for November, but it did generate its highest unit sales tally of any November month life to date. This is likely due to the launch of the Xbox One X and other discounts over the month. Microsoft has seen a lot of renewed enthusiasm lately.
Piscatella noted that United States video game spending across hardware, software, and accessories rose around 30% when compared to a year ago, to $2.7 billion. Dollar sales of game software in November combined to reach $1.2 billion, up 19% from last year.
Call of Duty: WWII was November 2017’s best-selling game overall and became the year’s best-selling game as well. It even generated more launch month consumer spending than any Call of Duty debut since the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops II in November 2012 according to Piscatella.
Assassin’s Creed Origins has also enjoyed a warm reception. Ubisoft’s title was the third best-selling game of November. Just in its first two months, Assassin’s Creed Origins generated the highest consumer spending for an Assassin’s Creed franchise release since Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag over four years ago.
