DETROIT – Happy birthday, Aaliyah.
Known by many as the « Princess of R&B, » Aaliyah Dana Haughton rose to prominence in the 1990s when he unique style helped to redefine the R&B, pop and hip-hop genres.
Born in New York City and raised in Detroit, she was tragically killed in a plane crash with eight others on August 25,2001. She was just 22 years old.
Today, Jan. 16,2018 would have been her 39 th birthday. Known for her chart-topping singles like « Try Again, » « Miss You, » « Are You That Somebody, » and « Back & Forth, » Aaliyah moved to Detroit when she was 10 years old.
She attended Detroit’s Gesu Catholic School and the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts.
Her untimely death in 2001 shook the music world. An estimated 800 mourners were in attendance at her private funeral including Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Gladys Knight, Lil’ Kim and Sean « P. Diddy » Combs.
She is entombed in the Rosewood Mausoleum at the Ferncliff Cemetary in Hartsdale, N.Y.
Despite her death nearly two decades ago, Aaliyah has sold an estimated 24 to 32 million albums worldwide. She remains a beloved figured in the music industry thanks to her impact on the musical styles of the era.
Several in the music industry took to Twitter to honor her memory on Tuesday, most notably Elliott and Timbaland, two of her frequent collaborators and friends.
