Samsung has announced that it will be continuing the tradition of promoting the work of its C-Lab incubator. The side project generally tries to give startups help in getting their products to the market; with three particular projects being introduced at CES 2018.
First up is the S-Ray (Sound Ray) portable directional speaker. It’s designed to provide a bubble of sound that only the wearer can hear, taking away the need for earbuds or headphones. The idea is that having the open concept will allow users to be more aware of their surroundings and avoid blocking out important audio cues from the real world.
The directional speaker comes in three forms, one of which can be worn as a loop around the neck.
The second showcase is an app designed to help patients recover from lung damage. It’s largely a breathing guide, meant to walk people through the necessary deep breathing exercises. Also accompanying this is a portable device that will help health care professionals track patients’ progress, allowing them to more closely monitor those under their care.
Finally, Relumino is a project to help people with low vision see more clearly. People with low vision are not exactly blind, although they suffer from extremely limited visual acuity. The idea is that augmented- and virtual reality will be able to help these people. Mostly because the image being viewed is now inches from their face instead of being much further away.
For now, Relumino is relying on Samsung Gear VR headsets to achieve the effect. However, the group is working on making something less intrusive for the wearer; and resembles regular glasses.
Samsung’s C-Lab will also be showcasing seven startups that have been spun off from the incubator. All of which have come from trying to promote a more creative culture within the company.
