Vivo’s vision for the future of smartphones came at this year’s MWC 2018, where the Chinese manufacturer showed off the APEX concept phone. When diverging into the specifications of the smartphone, it was claimed that the device featured a 98% screen-to-body ratio. Since the phone has now been officially announced, we’ve got to know that the Vivo APEX features a 91% screen-to-body ratio but if you look at the images, the full-screen display of the phone has gone past the scaling of Apple’s iPhone X and Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.
The Vivo APEX also does not compromise when it comes to the performance because it will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset. Vivo does not manufacturer its own SoCs like Samsung, Apple, and Huawei, so the company will have no choice but to rely on Qualcomm for the time being.
Vivo was the first brand to debut a phone with an in-glass fingerprint reader, but the company has taken it one step further when it comes to unlocking your smartphone with a huge amount of convenience. The APEX features a 5.99-inch display that is accompanied by COF technology. This combination is what is able to deliver that full-screen experience. There is also a pop-up camera that you saw in the concept earlier and the display itself acts as an earpiece and loudspeaker since both internal components are placed beneath the display. The fingerprint sensor is not placed in one spot. Instead, almost half of display acts as this fingerprint reader and you will be able to register several fingerprints on the device.
The phone is just 7.8mm thin, with the left and right bezels occupying a thickness of 1.8mm while the bottom bezel occupies a space of 4.3mm. The Vivo APEX will also become a daily driver for audiophiles as it offers Hi-Fi audio support, with three amplifiers and a DAC in place. Apart from a Snapdragon 845, Vivo has not mentioned other specifications of the device, although the phone will go into production during the second half of this year. Pricing has not been mentioned either, but an advanced smartphone like this will certainly not be coming cheap.
