So, now that the 1.1.1.1 is here, should you use it, and if yes then how?
There is a new DNS server in the town, and if you want better speed on your internet connection you should be using. This is what Cloudflare says as the company announces a new DNS server hosted at 1.1.1.1.
Now before we talk of what is this new DNS server and how it competes with the likes of 8.8.8.8. that is run by Google a few words about Cloudflare and DNS servers. A DNS server is sort of middleman between you and the website that you are trying to reach. It is the server that finds, for example, where the Gmail is by associating Gmail.com with an IP address. Usually when you get an internet connection from a company like Airtel, or use 4G or 3G from a company like Jio, they automatically provide you with a DNS server.
Depending on how fast is a DNS server, your internet connection will also feel fast or slow. The DNS servers usually offered by ISPs like Airtel are slow. This is why a lot of people use 8.8.8.8. a DNS server run by Google or DNS servers from OpenDNS.
Now, Cloudflare says that its new 1.1.1.1 DNS server is the fastest in the world. It also says that unlike other DNS servers, it respects the privacy of user and doesn’t block websites.
« We talked to the APNIC team about how we wanted to create a privacy-first, extremely fast DNS system. They thought it was a laudable goal. We offered Cloudflare’s network to receive and study the garbage traffic in exchange for being able to offer a DNS resolver on the memorable IPs. And, with that, 1.1.1.1 was born, » wrote Matthew Prince of Cloudflare.
So, now that the 1.1.1.1 is here, should you use it, and if yes then how? We suggest you experiment with it. If you are using the DNS server provided by your ISP, you should definitely to move to either Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS. OpenDNS was also used to be good, but we don’t recommend it now because some users have complained of censorship on that. Changing DNS server from the one provided by ISP will also help you avoid website blocking etc in some cases.
Once you have moved to a new DNS server, experiment. See with which one you get faster opening of sites. Depending on which one works better and more reliably for you, choose between 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8.
The way to change DNS is by going into your internet connection settings on the computer. Right click that network icon, go to settings, click on network characteristics and change the DNS. On phones though it is tricky for most users although, if you are tech-savvy and inclined to change your DNS there are apps that you can download to try a new DNS server.
