With smartphones going bezel-less and cramming bigger displays in a smaller footprint, tablets are now far and few in between. Yet Apple and Samsung have been bringing powerful slates to appease buyers. A couple of months back, the Cupertino giant introduced the new iPad, and now the Korean brand has refreshed its Tab S series with the launch of the Galaxy Tab S4. The latest tablet from Samsung brings considerable upgrades over last year’s Tab S3. If you are wondering what has changed, then you’ve come to the right place as we’re comparing the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 with its predecessor.
The first major change is that the latest launch comes with a bigger 10.5-inch AMOLED display with a resolution 2,056 x 1,600 pixels. In comparison, the Galaxy Tab S3 comes with a smaller 9.7-inch display with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels.
Under the hood, Samsung is sticking to using a generation old chipset on its flagship tablets as the Galaxy Tab S4 comes with Snapdragon 835 chipset. The Tab S3 also utilised an older Snapdragon 820 SoC when it was launched. The brand has also doubled the built-in storage to 64GB on the Tab S4.
In the imaging department, the selfie shooter gets an upgrade to an 8-megapixel on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 as compared to the 5MP snapper on the Tab S3. Design-wise, the new Tab S4 comes with slimmer bezels. Sadly that also means that the brand has got rid of the physical home button and thus, the fingerprint scanner as well. However, the latest slate comes with the Iris scanner for security.
One nifty addition to the Tab S4 is the inclusion of the DeX Mode, which launches automatically when the keyboard cover is connected and switches the UI to desktop-like interface with support for multiple app windows, Bluetooth mouse, and right-click functionality, among others.
Lastly, to support the larger display and the additional features, the Galaxy Tab S4 comes with a bigger 7,300mAh battery. The Tab S3 on the other hand, offers a smaller 6,000mAh battery.
The first similarity between the two slates is the all-glass build protected by Corning Gorilla Glass on the front and back. Even though the brand has increased display size, the bezels have been reduced to keep the overall size of the Tab S4 same as its predecessor. The slates also get 4GB RAM backing the processor and boot Android Oreo out of the box. Moving to the camera department, both these tablets shared the same 13-megapixel shooter on the back.
Both the Tab S4 and S3 come with the four-speaker array, with audio tuned by Samsung-owned audio company AKG. However, the Tab S4 also gets Dolby Atmos support for even better audio output.
Lastly, both these tablets come with S-Pen included in the package. Although, the S-Pen that comes with Tab S4 gets some upgrades like support for live messages and screen-off memo.
Coming to the pricing, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 is already available on major e-commerce websites like Amazon India and Flipkart. The slate will set you back by Rs 47,990. In contrast, the Galaxy Tab S4 is scheduled to go on sale in the United States starting August 10th. The Wi-Fi-only model will be available starting at $649.99 (~Rs 44,330) in the US. As of now, there’s no word on when the latest tablet will come to India.
It’s evident that the Galaxy Tab S4 brings a lot of upgrades to the table including a more powerful processor, DeX for more productivity-oriented tasks and an improved S-Pen. And with the base price being the same as that of the Galaxy Tab S3, it surely makes for a much better option of the two. Now if only the Chaebol brings its latest flagship tab to India soon…
