Manchester United have been knocked out in the League Cup third round by Championship side Derby on penalties, following a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.
Jack Marriott’s 85th-minute header put Frank Lampard on course for a first victory against a Premier League side as manager until Marouane Fellaini equalised deep into stoppage time — but that just delayed the celebrations.
United started the game in ideal fashion with Juan Mata opening the scoring inside three minutes.
However, the game turned inside eight second-half minutes when on-loan Liverpool winger Harry Wilson equalised for Derby and United goalkeeper Sergio Romero was given his marching orders for handling outside the box.
Anthony Martial was causing Derby all kinds of problems down the left, while Romelu Lukaku was guilty of a few glaring misses, but the visitors grew into the game and soon began taking control of proceedings.
Romero was forced into making a fantastic save to deny Wilson from equalising.
However, Wilson pulled the Rams level with a stunning free-kick on 59 minutes before Romero saw red for a handball outside the box.
With the Argentine dismissed, Lee Grant replaced Mata for his United debut and made one wonder save to keep his side level — and with five minutes remaining, he was only able to palm Mason Mount’s effort into the path of Mariott who headed past him and put Derby on the brink of a famous win.
Fellaini popped up with virtually the last kick of the game to head United level and send the match to penalties, where Phil Jones was the first to miss in sudden death as Derby won 8-7.
