In an interview with Vogue Australia, Victoria Beckham talks making the transition from pop star to fashion designer years before Kanye West launched his Yeezy brand.
Before there was Yeezy, there was Victoria Beckham.
While Kanye West loves to brand himself as an innovator, taking credit for opening the door for other musicians to make their first forays into fashion, Beckham says she’s the one responsible for normalizing pop icons in the world of couture.
“There was a way in the industry of doing things,” the former Spice Girl, 44, told Vogue Australia of her runway debut in 2008. “I knew there were rules I had to abide by, but I wanted to be entrepreneurial and find different ways of doing things.”
Beckham continued, “I was a pop star who turned into a fashion designer and I didn’t want to do things the same way everyone else was doing them. And probably because I was a little naive, I wasn’t scared to take on those challenges in my own way.”
Concluded the star, “I’ve always said this is not a vanity project for me: this is a business.”
And while Beckham may not be on her way to a billion like a certain controversial rapper, her business was just valued at £100 million. Not too shabby.
