The EU Court of Justice ruled Monday Britain can unilaterally decide to scrap its Brexit plans and hold a second referendum on the issue.
Dec. 10 (UPI) — As British Prime Minister Theresa May tries to drive Britain toward a deal to leave the European Union, the EU Court of Justice ruled Monday Britain can unilaterally decide to scrap its Brexit plans and hold a second referendum on the issue.
The decision backs up a claim made last week by an EU adviser who said there’s still a chance for Britain to reverse its decision. The court said in its judgment Britain doesn’t need approval from any member of the 28-nation alliance to reverse course.
« The United Kingdom is free to revoke unilaterally the notifications of its intention to withdraw from the EU, » the European Court of Justice said . « Such a revocation confirms the EU membership of the member state concerned under terms that are unchanged as regards its status as a member state and brings withdraw procedure to an end. »
The decision comes one day before British Parliament is set for a historic vote on May’s Brexit plan.
