In non-Oscar holdover weekend box office news, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World roared back to relative life over the weekend. The DreamWorks Animation threequel earned a $30 million Fri-Sun frame (a 4.9x weekend multiplier), to top the box office and pull a $97.6m ten-day domestic total. That’s a drop of just 45% in weekend two, compared to the 50% drop for How To Train Your Dragon 2 in 2014 and the 48% drops for The Boss Baby and Home in 2017 and 2015. Whether or not it hangs on after the one-two punch of Captain Marvel and Wonder Park, it is now in a place to leg it out for the rest of the season.
It’s still on tap (if it continues to play like a DreamWorks Animation title) to be the year’s first (or second, as Captain Marvel will get there first) title to cross $150 million domestic. If it continues to play like Monsters versus Aliens (-45% in weekend two from a $59 launch in 2009), it’ll get to $185m domestic. With a $33m Fri-Sun weekend in China and a $52m overseas weekend gross, it’s still flying relatively high around the world. The $129m-budgeted fantasy adventure has earned $375m worldwide.
