Jonah Hill’s directorial debut is a stylish period piece about a young kid trying to find a sense of belonging in Los Angeles circa the mid-1990s. The film follows Stevie (Sunny Suljic), a 13-year-old boy who lives with his single mother, Dabney (Katherine Waterston), and his older brother, Ian (Lucas Hedges). Stevie admires his brother, even though Ian frequently beats him up, and longing for male camaraderie, Stevie seeks out a group of local skaters who don’t give a damn about society’s rules. Rolling with the hellions, Stevie embraces drugs, alcohol, and the pain of falling off his board. Hill filmed Mid90s in Academy ratio (4:3), which gives the film a nostalgic quality that fits its themes, and while the film has its rough edges (to be expected of a director’s first film), it’s a promising debut.
