Singleton died following a stroke.
Celebrities and fans of legendary director John Singleton flocked to social media to mourn the star after he died Monday. His family took him off life support after Singleton suffered a stroke more than a week ago.
“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors,” the statement read.
Singleton was famous for directing a number of highly acclaimed movies and TV shows, lending his creative vision to 19 titles over his nearly 30-year career. However, his biggest feat may have been his first: his directorial debut with 1991’s Boyz n the Hood, for which Singleton was nominated for two Oscars in 1992.
