Duncan Robinson played on Michigan’s basketball team for three seasons. Then he spent this past year with the Miami Heat, where he got the chance to work with then-assistant coach Juwan Howard.
Howard, a member of the famed Fab Five recruiting class in 1991, was named the head coach at U-M on Wednesday. And that excites Robinson, who knows both U-M and Howard better than most.
“Being an alum from the program and then also having the personal and basketball relationship with Juwan, I feel like it’s a really good fit, » Robinson told the Free Press. « I’m just really excited for him, I’m really excited for the university and I’m excited to follow him in the years to come.”

Robinson transferred to U-M from Division III Williams College in 2014 and played three seasons from 2015-18. He described Howard as a « relationship-first coach. »
“He’s just the type of guy you want to play for, want to play hard for, » Robinson said. « He makes an effort to reach out and connect and be more than just somebody that can teach and coach you in basketball but instead someone that you feel you have a genuine relationship with.
« A lot of times in coaching, that’s more than half the battle, to get people that are willing to buy in because they trust you and understand that you’re genuine in your motivations.
